The Gaff in Monmouthshire

We shared 6 Vegetable dishes for lunch today, plus a pud, and every mouthful was sensational. The dishes were complex and delicious, and very satisfying. It is difficult to find good vegetarian food that I can’t cook equally well at home. These dishes really were better than anything I’ve cooked, and there was plenty of choice. Plenty of choice for carnivores too. The chefs really know how to squeeze the maximum flavour out of every ingredient. The celeriac dish was my favourite , but we couldn’t decide which was our second favourite plate of deliciousness. We’ll be back.

Staff need retaining. Gluten would send a lot of coeliacs into hospital. The staff at this establishment aren't careful enough

I spotted this place the day before and noted the rear courtyard. We were with my dog, who had just spent an hour swimming in a lake and was all wet. We have expected to get turned away but we asked if they would serve us in the courtyard as we had the dog. The waiter was very friendly and obliging and even brough our a bowl of water for my dog. Now the food, it is a sort of English tapas style where you pick one or two dishes and they come up over a period of time. I love this style as you get a better choice and you know the chef will be good to be able to cope. I was right each dish that we were served was lovely, hot and tasty, all credit to the team here. Thank you very much for accommodating us and our wet dog, we all loved it.

Amazing food and great variety on the menu, friendly service. Visited on a weekday and there was lots of room to sit inside or out in a nice clean courtyard

Food was satisfactory. Service average. Expensive for what we ordered. £12 for a glass of wine,!!. Won’t be rusing back. Sorry!

An impromptu lunch, at the last moment. As good as last time, great staff, very interesting menu selections, and nice wines.....the turbot and the truffle pasta were especially nice.

We decided to go to The Gaff today as we wanted something different to a ‘pub’ lunch and we definitely didn’t regret it. We opted for a stater each, we shared the bread and butter which was deliciously rich and had a few of the dishes as suggested to share. Pork curry, lamb and chicken kebab with a side of potatoes. It all came out at different times as stated on menu which really suited us as we wanted a leisurely lunch and enjoyed the sharing as it enabled us to try different flavours. The dishes are advertised as small plates and that’s why it suggests you try a few but as they are so flavourful you would probably struggle with a huge portion. The courtyard had a lovely vibe and we will definitely return.

I hesitated to write this as we have a Gaff WhatsApp group we love the food so much but unfortunately after last nights experience I felt the need ! My friends and I visit the Gaff on numerous occasions either as a group or with our families. Therefore given it’s very expensive we have between us spent many hundreds of pounds yet of quite a few occasions we have not experienced the best customer service from Andy the Manager. To mention just a few : When asked if the mushroom dish was available but they had run out the response’ I can’t just magic the mushrooms out of thin air’ ( the irony) On another occasion a large piece of hard plastic was found in an ice cream dish … no apology or refund A drink was brought to the table and promptly exploded all over a friends dress and coat … no apology yet again £25 cost for dry cleaning The last night we ordered 12 plus dishes. Eventually 3 turned up we the waited 20 minutes ably to see two tables who had sat down after us receiving all their dishes. I decided I would approach Andy to ask about the remaining dishes . I did so quietly and discreetly in order not to cause any embarrassment only to be told ‘I cat lip read’ . After asking where and when the rest of the food would be arriving I was told ‘ they are sharing dishes and all come at different times ‘ the conversation did not end there but on no occasion did we get an apology or up date. Andy then came over to our table not to apologise but continued to say we were in the wrong ! All it would have taken was a better approach towards the customers and less attitude from the Manager. The other two members of staff were excellent but once we complained we did not get looked after until the bill of £360 plus was presented with a 10% charge applied!

Amazing food and great service. Me and a few friends celebrated a birthday here a while a back and the experience was amazing. The small plate concept is something I’d never had before, and I was pleasantly surprised with how big the portions were and great vale for money. We will be back

WOW absolutely the best Sunday lunch in wales incredible. And being such a fussy eater and have eaten Sunday lunch in many other restaurants this is by the far the best one yet. I can’t recommend the gaff enough. You need to visit and try.

This is a lovely cafe with wonderful cakes and, on the day we visited, I had a brilliant Vegan Chocolate Jaffa cake. My friend had the lemon drizzle. The hot chocolate with oat milk was also fabulous

just amazing food, who knew you could create the flavours we experienced with such humble ingredients, the squash cheesey balls were phenomenal, the bang bang cauliflower left us speechless,, all at the table kept ooohing & aahing with delight at the food, the humble carrot converted into a taste sensation with lentils and god knows what…. Magic probably. The sirloin steak with peppcorn sauce, pork with onions & black pudding, the parsnips , the roast potatoes it all blew our minds. Oh the artichokes that floored all at the table, I don’t know how the chefs do what they do but don’t stop!!! Amazing food with great flavours. Interesting combinations that all work so well. Also love the fact that you can get wine by the glass, carafe or bottle and price is very reasonable. It’s my second time here and was just as good as I remembered. I live in London otherwise I would be a regular diner!

This fabulous restaurant never disappoints. Well located in the town with a changing and interesting menu. Between the four of us we ordered 12 plates plus olives and bread with buttery marmite. All dishes were cooked to perfection, presented with care and were Incredibly tasty. These creative chefs know precisely what they are doing and are happy to talk to you about any dishes at the end of service. Every dish was a treat but of particular note for me were the pork with pease pudding, duck, hispi cabbage (yes!) cheese and potato pie and bang bang cauliflower. All four of us were so full that we couldn’t eat a pudding! Accompanying Viognier was beautifully chilled. Treasure this restaurant Abergavenny, it’s a gem of a place.

The Gaff is fast being our go-too for special occasions. The food is always amazing, ever changing menu keeps it interesting and the service is fantastic. Make sure you book!!

The small plate menu at The Gaff is excellent and it was very difficult to choose what we wanted due to the choices available. In the end we settled on a couple of tempura oysters, 2 fish, 2 meat and 2 veg dishes. All of the dishes were excellent and we would order them again. Service was friendly and polite. The restaurant has a nice feel to it. Would definitely return.

Can’t fault the food, location or the service, the only criticism is with the front of house/manager (not sure who he was). He was abrupt and made a negative comment about the attire of one of the party which left a sour note on the experience. I checked and couldn’t see any dress code violation so I’m not sure why he felt the need to address a non existent issue .

We visited The Gaff for my Birthday. Our initial thoughts were that it was light and airy with good quality furniture that just invited you to sit and be comfortable. Then as the food started to arrive we were blown away. We have been to some fabulous restaurants previously but never has a small plate tasted so wonderful. As a vegetarian, most restaurants offer one or two options but here I literally could eat my way through plates of vegetables all with such a different and delicious taste. For me the outstanding dish was the bang bang cauliflower, but the aubergines carrots and French fries with a sriracha Mayo were so tasty too. My husband had the steak, the duck and the venison koftas whilst my best friend had sea bream and koftas. There was not one thing that we did not like. For dessert we had the malt loaf with Perl wen and roasted grapes, the sticky toffee pudding with custard and vanilla ice cream and the warm apple cake with caramel . The service was relaxed and friendly, as a disabled person I really appreciated the bench seat and the accessible toilet. It really could do with a grab rail to help you up as the toilet itself is quite low. It could also use a sanitary bin. Other than that it was perfect. We all left with over full stomach’s and a desire to return.Everyone from the owner to the waitress was welcoming and if you haven’t experienced the food you really are missing out. Sublime.

Fantastic food, complex and varied. Wine & cocktails reasonably priced. Don’t know about small plates but we had 7 between 2 of us and were stuffed. Very good value for money for the quality of food, and beautiful presentation. Service just right, warm and attentive. ( they even wrote down a cocktail recipe for me) Couldn’t fault it!

Pleased we booked this weeks in advance because it was excellent. Small plates, well thought out and beautifully presented. The service was good and the atmosphere very comfortable. The quality of food makes it the sort of place you would return to again and again.

I had to book months ahead which I took as a good sign and I was a little nervous that it wouldn’t be as good as I hoped, but I needn’t have worried. The service was fast and friendly and the food was excellent. We shared six different dishes and all of them were beautifully prepared and delicious. Don’t hesitate!

Amazing small plates cooked to perfection using seasonal foods in the most perfect little spot. Service was exceptional. Perfect balance of being attentive without being intrusive.
