Loved my Saturday lunches here hubby is gutted its closing decent pint friendly staff good home cooked food will miss it 😢

Fantastic food, relaxed atmosphere, great with families. This is our go to pub for dinner, even the small portions are huge and delicious. The veggie parmos are the best I've ever encountered! I recommend this place to everyone I can because I've never had a bad experience. Staff are so funny and will have playful banter with you without being offended, it's a breath of fresh air!

Very sorry to see The Gables is closing. I have been a critic in the past but it always offered excellent food even in these very testing times. I wish Jo and her family and staff all the very best in whatever you do in the future. You can now have a well earned rest and hopefully you may come back in the future. Thanks and Good Luck.

Ok so let's split this into the 3 categories. Food. What you get is very tasty if it's not raw and for one of our party the fish was sadly that. For the other 2 the vegetarian options of parmo and lasagne were lovely. But sadly that was the only options as the menu really is tiny. Service. Staff were very friendly except for the cook upon asking for the fish to be looked at told us it was cooked. It wasn't that's why we sent it back. Atmosphere... It's a bit tight in there for space. My chair wobbled as did the table and the writing on the wall about how the owner is always right kinda sets the feel.. Overall it was mid. Better than alot locally but I couldn't go back as the options are tiny or raw so yh go enjoy just don't expect to become a regular

Really enjoyed going to the Gables.Lovely food and a Jo is a credit the way she runs the place.However after enjoying our visits the last time we went for a meal was spoilt by a man who I believe is Jo’s husband.My friend who had been really poorly was met by a really sarcastic remark which he decided to direct to a staff member who was behind the bar working.My friend asked what he said as she knew what he said was directed at her, but he ignored her and the young man who was behind the bar looked totally embarrassed( wasn’t his fault)I was surprised that the amount the pub does for charityI believe they raised money for a disabled lad this man thought it would be ok to act the way he did.It was a birthday meal and my friend did not mention it at the time she didn’t want to spoil the meal but it certainly spoilt her day she was very upset about it and would of rather the man had voiced what he had to say to her personally.Good manners to customers cost nothing and a wise head keeps a still tongue.Hence due to how uncomfortable this man made her feel we won’t be using The Gables again.

Good honest wholesome food. Make sure you are hungry as the portions are big. Sunday dinners are lovely. Steak pies are really good. My husband are I eat here at least once a month for a good number of years. Never had a bad meal. Great value for money.

The service wasn't even worth 1 star. wasn't even shown our table and simply told "it's over there" I had to go and get the menus from the bar myself and the attitude of the staff was clearly they didn't even want to be there themselves..Food was bang average and I'm pretty sure the fish was from the freezer and defrosted as was almost jelly like 🤢. Over £70 for two adults and two children with one drink each, go elsewhere!

The whole pub was very busy but the staff coped admirably. Proper home cooked grub and simple sweets just like I remember from school dinners (but I am old lol). The staff are all so friendly. Loved it as the buzz of Christmas is building.

Fantastic place for a drink and a meal

We were looking for somewhere to eat on our return from York and rang this pub and they were able to seat us. Arrived and was welcomed by the bar staff who offered us different areas of seating. We all chose different meals, Mine being Lee's Burger. My wife had the Fajihta's. Daughter had the Beef Pie and her boyfriend had the Lasagne. Firstly we were blown away by the generous portion sizes. Then the quality of the food served was superb. All members of the party commenting on the quality. Add to that the friendliness of the staff and we had a very nice surprise visit, but we have all said we need to go back. The Sunday lunch on the menu looks amazing. So all in all a really good experience would highly recommend this pub if you like really good grub at a reasonable price.

Well cannot be outdone by my son and daughter in law. I am the grandmother of Daniel my grandson ,who now lives in Hemlington, five of the family had a meal here on Saturday. We could not be made more welcome, the food was excellent and reasonably priced, especially compared with prices here in the South East(200 MILES AWAY). The landlady was wonderful, I cannot remember the last time I went for a meal and enjoyed it so much, not just the food but the amazing, attentive, funny staff. I have bee to many places in many different towns I went to the gables and got lasagna as I do in every place I go but this one was amazing this will be my place for food from now on highly recommend very friendly staff prices great nice family atmosphere

Southern Softies Return Yet another visit and yet another thoroughly cracking evening. This time with our grandparents who we’d warned this pub is not normal. They weren’t left disappointed. A warm welcome, great food and drink and a brilliant game of TIG. Simply can’t recommend this pub enough. The landlady Jo is crazy as are most of the staff. The end result being a cracking, fun filled night. Last time Jo babysat our grandchild & this time she entertained the grandparents. Thank you for a lovely evening. Can’t wait to return. It’s a 200 mile journey from Bedfordshire and worth every mile. Well done the Gables.

Lovely food and very friendly staff

Need a strong stomach for the food in this please so be warned . Parmo wasn’t raw but chewy and didn’t taste right so was left . Fish was so greasy I still have heartburn now was soaked in grease and fish was grey . So if you want to loose weight quick this is the place to go as my partner had really bad diarrhoea while in here and after been here 🤮 no wonder you get a free pudding . Would not of left a review if after telling the waitress why we had left the food and not even offered a partial refund just a sorry and would you like another one haha no thanks . Knew we should of stuck to the lingfield.

Friendly staff, good food and plenty it.

Nice pub, lad behind the bar pleasant, pint and food decent, prices not too steep either. Parmos are spot on and the 2 small portions for £20 is a bargain. Nice pints as well.

Went for Sunday dinner and it was out off this world the rosties where unreal would highly recommend this place

I am partial to home cooking and especially a steak pie. Steak pie, chips and mushy peas was the best. Packed with succulent steak and soft crusty pastry. Lovely large portion.

1st time we've and beautiful dinner, will definitely be back.

Sunday Roast was ok the carrots were hard and the Yorkshire pudding well what can I say spoilt the dinner they were hard and dry as if they’d been cooked earlier in the day Would be perfect roast if you yorkies we’re straight out the oven

Had the Sunday lunch - food was delicious and came really quickly. Felt like a busy pub with a good atmosphere. One of the bar staff was a bit rude unnecessarily as we'd ordered a takeaway but not stayed at our table. Prices were reasonable too.

Went to The Gables for the first time in years, glad we went. Staff are really warm, friendly and welcoming. Food was cooked well and really nice. Had a lovely visit and likely go back soon.

Went here for a birthday treat with my sons their partners and kids , food was excellent all fresh and seasoned to perfection, managed to fit in a dessert a bit later on service was great and we were all greeted in a friendly way , my grandkids loved looking at the parrot

I took my friend here for a belated birthday lunch the staff were really friendly and made us welcome.

This was a great place to go and eat. Went with 2 other people and we all enjoyed our meals. Even though it was chocca block the staff were so cool under pressure and had a smile on their faces. We booked up again for next week. 😋😀 Would highly recommend mince and dumpling

Love the gables. Food is spot on. Staff are friendly and welcoming, just a great spot for a bite to eat or a quiet drink. It's super dog friendly, too.

Unsure how original post appeared as I believe The Gables to be 5 star. It is my regular go to for my Sunday lunch which is good old fashioned home cooked food. The choice is roasts only cooked to perfection with masses of freshly cooked veg, boat load of the best pub gravy ever with more if requested, proper accompaniments of sauces if asked for, mustard. horseradish, mint sauce etc. Unlike other eateries that use the extremely sad and tasteless sachets of the same that you can never get into and are so bland they have no place with a decent meal. The whole staff are very good and the service is excellent. You can always be sure to find many returning customers like myself who know what they want and know they will find it here. Was there again last Sunday and for many more before and will continue to go for the foreseeable future.

My sons pre booked a table for 11 of us for my birthday , we were greeted by friendly staff and shown to our table , the atmosphere was lovely staff very attentive , our order came out all together which was great we all ordered different foods from menu , my fish n chips were lovely my daughter in law loved the steak pie and the obligatory Parmos ordered by the the lads were great , the grandkids were happy the adults were happy apple pie was divine , thanks for a lovely evening will definitely return xx

Another absolutely fantastic meal at the Gables. Steak pie was absolutely delicious and my partner confirmed the mince and dumplings were great by the empty plate. Greedy b*stard. Just had one of the worst parmos ever,,looked nice on presentation, tasted awful,,bechamel sauce was like sticky gloopy wallpaper paste,,complete waste of money,,

So my sister got a very unprofessional reply back from that vile woman from the gables the owner as she puts it. Well her reply failed to say she called me a cow and bitch and I needed to grow up as was a grown woman !!!! Yeah Wowww I kept my dignity and waited till my parents had gone as it was Father’s Day, I gave Jo some home truths. Jo also said we are our dinners ermmmmm no jo I left all the scabby meat you serve people and puddings had been cooked weeks ago and defrosted as you could get the knife through them. Obviously Jo always puts this down to her personality but i think this is wearing a bit thin now with your paying customers who you have upset and been rude to. Maybe reflect on your rude sense of humour as you put it !!!!! The woman gives licenses a bad name !!!!

Honestly the rudest staff I’ve ever encountered in my entire life. Parmos where dry and burnt. Informed Staffs dm immediately said no refunds, 2 meals completely untouched, rest of food was ok. Will never return when under same management. Personally would avoid at all costs. No customer service skills at all.

Owner Jo called my sister a fussy cow and a bitch because she asked for mash instead of turnip on the plate. Dinner was absolutely disgusting, beef was pale, chewy and fatty. Yorkshire puddings were rock hard obviously been made and frozen, cauliflower cheese tasted like vinegar which suggests it was off. I will never step foot in there again, terrible all round ! No doubt I will get a rude reply from the owner of this as thats quite evident from all the other reviews. Disgusting !!

1st time visit, was really pleased to find they offered gluten free and not the same basic stuff as elsewhere. Ordered the gf fish and chips, lovely fresh and hot, the fish was really tasty and the chips were to die for. Ordered gf apple crumble and custard for dessert, absolutely divine. Will definitely be visiting again.

Never had a bad meal there until now, mixed grill was bland, meat was very thin and chewy,I left most of the meal, wouldnt go back after that. The food was perfect before, not sure whats happened but wont be going back to find out.

Lovely home cooked food! Not your usual pub chain microwave grub . Every meal I saw brought out could have fed two people easily and looked amazing. I had homemade plate pie with mash and peas , I like a nice pie and this didn’t disappoint it was chock full of mince with a lovely thin light pastry, not like the chain pubs where it’s all pastry and no filling! Highly recommend 👍

Don’t order fajitas it’s just chicken and onions in tomato sauce and a thumb full of cheese and the ‘parmesans’ are dry. Could have been an off day

Previously I have enjoyed my food at the Gables. However, this time I was very disappointed. I ordered Steak and asked for either a Diane or Pepercorn sauce to go with it. I was told they no longer do sauces because they don't have any cream. I asked for my steak to be cooked medium to well done and I was told they can only do medium.The steak was Pink in the middle,grissely and as tough as old boots.

We visit this pub infrequently - usually when we shop at Teesside. For all the pub is in a great location & the food is great, that's just it - there isn't enough choice of food because they don't cater for an ever-growing population of...
