The Funky Fish - Brough in East Riding of Yorkshire

I have not used this business as much over the past year as the quality has declined significantly. Decided to give I another try last week. Asked for 2 lightly done fish and a portion of chips - cost of £14.10. The chips were plentiful and very nice but the fish was almost inedible. The fish was so well done that the fish was chewy and the batter nearly broke my teeth. Won’t be going again. Very sad as the fish used to be excellent when same fryers worked regularly

We were away on a short break. We has spent the day in Whitby and wanted some fish and chips for dinner before checking into our hotel. We looked at trip advisor reviews but many were limited. We came across this chip shop so went in. Service was good and the premises looked clean. I ordered a standard fish and chips. Chips were nice but the batter on the fish was very crispy thick grease and left an unpleasant grease and taste in my mouth! I think the oil may need changing or it had been sat in the counter a little while. I assume the fish was cod the board just said fish and chips and I didn’t think to ask until we were back at the car. It was nice enough but I have definitely had much nicer. My boyfriend said his battered sausage and chips were good!

Driving around we came upon this chippy. The chips were tasty , freshly cooked . As we enjoyed the chips so much , we ordered 2 fish which matched the quality of the chips. Crispy batter , fresh fish tasty and looked good to the eye. Wel done and keep up the god work

Glad we didn't order a small fish and chips hardly any chips £20 for to large fish and chips with mushy peas and a couple of cans I think I will cook my own next time What we did get was tasty though marked them down due to quantity

I appreciate it is Good Friday and they are busy but !!! Young girl outside barking demands at members of the public to give their order quickly. We are the customers. Has she been trained and by who ? I was eventually summoned in to be presented with the wrong order and while they rectified this half my order was left on a side area to go cold The fish was good but the chips were dry and most were inedible We have had poor service here before but wanted to give them a second chance. How many do you give them?

I use this takeaway regularly and always find it very good but today I tried something different and was amazed at how much of a ripoff the scampi was, when I questioned the boy behind the counter about the tiny amount he just shrugged his shoulders and said that was it you seriously need to look in to this, took pictures and am considering some other action it was pathetic you need to get a responsible person in charge in there.

Called in at Funky Fish, because our usual fish shop was shut, i wish i hadn't, dirty fat ,under cooked chips , how do you manage to burn the bottom of a sage and onion pattie, sausages were dripping in fat. Poor quality

Me and my son popped in as a treat right on opening on Saturday and just ordered a fish and chips to share. The lady serving was really nice and the lad frying clearly knows his stuff as we ended up with a stunning portion of fish and chips that me and my son agreed couldn't of been better in any way. Simply perfect nice one!

We have been fairly regular customers over the last few years here, and they can be fantastic, but more often than not the quality has been very hit and miss. Chips are regularly greasy and soggy and look precut/frozen oven chips at times. The fish varies in quality from chewie and dry to nice and flakey. The Batter is sometimes lovely and crispy, but more often soggy and flat.

Came in today for a special. The chips were a little hard and the fish had uncooked batter underneath. The box didn’t have anything in it to soak up the grease so it was pouring out the sides. The best item of the meal was the patty that my other half ordered.

Use to be our go to chip shop but not anymore. Very hit and miss in terms of food quality and portion sizes. We now make the trip to Papa's in Willerby instead as it's so much better in every way and also far cheaper.

We had our Good Friday fish and chips delivered, was boiling hot and delicious. The fish was extremely tasty, all enjoyed and not a scrap left!! Fantastic, quick communication when booking/ ordering. Food very rarely disappoints. If you love fish and chips we recommend this fish shop .Unfortunately the staff 2 young men come across as rather short with customers and not a smile in sight. Even went out of our way to goodbye and they didn't even respond. Bring back all your lovely smiley staff!!

My friend and I have just had a delivery. The fish was piping hot, lovely large flakes and crispy batter. Glad we only ordered one portion of chips, there was loads. Really deliucious and at £12.50 for two excellent value. Helen

Excellent service, above and beyond couldn’t be more helpful and entertaining with my children whilst waiting for our food to cooked. Very tasty fish, chips and peas and the kids loved the dippers!

Just been to Funky Fish and service was terrible. When I mentioned this I was told never to return. Don’t worry I won’t or hire their mobile unit. Go somewhere else please.

Cannot fault Funky Fish in Brough. Excellent fresh cooked fish and chips delivered piping hot. I messaged them early hours as I was on a night shift to put in an order for delivery. A member of their helpful polite staff always message back to confirm the order.The delivery service is a bonus now too as I don’t drive. Spam fritter chips & peas for me post nights.. just what the doctor ordered. My hubby and son enjoyed ample portions of Haddock and chips so credit where credit is due..

Yet again so disappointing . Numerous visits, have had acceptable in the past, unfortunately this evening yet again poor, 2 fish specials with mushy peas, I have seen mushier pea soup , so waterier and tasteless I threw them both in the bin, describing the chips , I dont think i can, out of the 18 so called chips i did receive 1 did actually resemble a chip, 5 had black running through them the rest were scraps. I have mentioned it in the past to the staff, oh sorry with a hint of sarcasm . so sorry I will not be visiting again, a shame I do like to support local. To be fair the fish was good, get your act together please,

We have just collected our tea after messaging last night on messenger to order for 4.30pm today. The fish was huge and cooked to perfection as was the chips. We have never been disappointed from this lovely friendly fish shop. Well done excellent food & service

Brilliant delivery service. They made it really easy to order and pay for a treat for my parents. The food arrived hot and on time safely delivered and my parents said it was the best meal they have had since they went into isolation. I would highly recommend the food and the service.

Funky Fish has stayed open during the Coronavirus Pandemic by organising a easy stress free way of ordering. Facebook messager select a time and give them your order and boom get there at the required time pick up and pay with either cash or card a bobs your uncle easy. The Fish was awesome as ever beautifully cooked lovely thick white flakes. As always chips needed a minute or two longer but nevermind the fish is the star. Well done to you.

First thing first, great food, great team and surroundings. But why it’s not 5 stars..... two reasons.....only takes cash! Seriously guys move with the times. Second reason the fish is always cooked to order..... Friday lunchtime waiting for my fish to be cooked adds 10 mins to the waiting time. I understand why you may do this at 13:30 on a Tuesday but 12:10 on a Friday, it’s just frustrating. Good luck and I hope you survive the next few months.

Got a takeaway from here and as always the fish was amazing. Sadly not sure what they do with there chips as never quite cooked enough but the star of the show was the fish as it should be. Big white chunks as fresh fish beautiful.

Often visit here as the fish and chips are delightful and the best around by far. However I expereinced some different staff tonight. The fryer a lovely girl that was welcoming and made the expereance copeable. Although my server barely spoke, she didn't smile or even use manners she had her apron rolled up her top so we could see her midrif which to me isn't what I'd like to see whilst waiting for something I'm looking to enjoy. The other member of staff wearing a hat was also wearing trousers showing her lower back and the beginning of her rear which is 1 unhygienic and 2 just disguting, not only that she was wearing crocs and no sock. Does this place have health and safety. Again the food is great. Just sort out the presentation and courtesy of your serving staff its letting you down!

we've stayed away from here for a long time as the last visit was terrible, anyway i decided to give it another try, the result was great, freshly cooked haddock and chips, they were great.

We have visited this Fish Shop many times but on this ocassion we were disappointed. The service lady didn't seem to know what she was doing and didn't smile, whereas the gentleman cooking was very pleasant. The Fish usually is lovely but this time the batter seamed a bit tough and strangely the chips didn't seam to taste of anything. It's a shame as it's usually very nice but on this occasion we felt that it was a bit of a let down, sorry. Hopefully better next time.

The 'frying' at The Funky Fish has been getting steadily worse over the last eighteen months, and last nights visit was our last ever. The fish was badly under cooked, batter soggy, and the chips saturated in oil and half cooked, the battered sausage meat was as salty as hell, and tasted awful. There is also a newish staff 'line up', and to describe them as miserable and truculent is an understatement. There's another Fish & Chip shop across the junction near Sainsburys, and to be honest they're food and service is far better than The Funky Fish.

Always reasonable food but prices seem a little steep, especially when compared to the family meal deal available at Papas which is a ten minute drive away. If they had a similar bundle I am sure more people would visit!

Funky fish used to be our go to fish and chip shop. We went tonight and received possibly the worst amount of food for 6.80 you could get. I think we might need to start looking outside of brough for outlr chips from now on.

My family get Fish & Chips from here every week and whilst I have been visiting over the last 2 months have eaten fantastic Fish & Chips from here with them. The Fish are the best I have had, the taste is so lovely. I will miss them so much. The curry sauce is lovely also. A great Fish & Chip shop

Sometimes businesses get a bad rap and through very little fault of their own get bad council ratings for food safety, now although I think this gives a benchmark as to whether you want to patronise a place or not, I feel it also gives the business in question an opportunity to impress going forward and unfortunately this didn't hit that mark.

Just been to get our tea from here and had my other half not ordered and paid for it I would have walked out. The girl serving has no idea or obviously training on hygiene. Her hair or should I say a bit of it was tied in a elastic-band on her head the rest dangling to her waist. Her clothing again not appropriate as she had a crop top showing her midriff. Having worked in the food industry her hair should be tied up in a hairnet or under a cap. For safety reasons alone she should be wearing her body covered. She kept flicking her hair back with her hand and then serving food. I don’t know who the owner is but he certainly needs to train his staff.

Fantastic food some of the best fish and chips you will get from a takeaway fish is always well cooked and lovely and fresh, chips can be a bit hit and miss but the fantastic fish more than makes up for it.

We buy supper from Funky Fish about monthly, as a family treat. We get fish, patties, battered sausages, all with chips, but particularly liked the fish dippers, or goujons. On last night's visit, where we ordered 2 large fish dippers and chips, (small dippers is no longer on the menu, why?), 2 battered sausages and chips, and a small fish and chips. The chips, sausages and small fish were all fine, but the fish dippers were very disappointing. The size of the dippers has reduced noticeably, at least a third smaller. With them being goujons, once you get through the batter the amount of fish was tiny, and they didn't used to be like this. When you buy fish and chips, that is what you want, and last night the fish quantity was small, and they are not cheap. We will give them another go, in case recent portions have been an anomaly, if it continues we will swap to the normal fish portion or go elsewhere. Guard your reputation, Funky Fish, there is competition around.

Had fish and chips today and was very disappointed. Was waiting 20 mins for a simple order of 2 fish &1 chips. . Had my order taken quickly and waited for my order, lady came in behind me and ordered 2 lightly fried fish. The server promptly gave them the fish that I had ordered which was bad but worse didn't ask the fryer to place 2 further fish in. No apologies for my wait. The fish we received were poor mine being so overlooked it was dry. This order cost £11 so not cheap. Will not be returning!

Get the silent treatment and miserable welcome now off one member of staff! because she didn’t like that I requested picking up my own bread bun, the other girls don’t mind! I don’t like the fact they use their hands to handle the bread buns instead of tongs!

Hands down one of the best cooked fish I’ve had in a very long time. Haddock was meaty, succulent & well cooked. Portion of chips along with it were expertly cooked & we enjoyed every single one. Coming from the North East of Scotland where the same thing would cost you £15 not £5 for a fish supper it was great value for money too! Service was great , staff were very friendly & didn’t have to wait too long either.

Just a simple fish n chip shop. Friendly staff and always fry fish fresh. Only issue is parking limited at peak times.

We have found, that on any given day, The Funky Fish food, will be only as good or bad as the person who's frying it. I belive that the regular (and very competent) fryer, takes a Thursday evening off. NEVER visit on a Thursday, the chips are chewy,, and the battering on the fish is either soggy or overcooked. Saturdays can also be a bit 'suspect.

Have caught, filleted and eaten fish all my life. I have also had very enjoyable meals from this establishment. Something has changed !

This is THE best chippy in the whole area. Absolutely fantastic food - the fish is spot on. Staff are really friendly and always helpful. Smiles when you go in.

A couple of times a month we will have a treat with our supper from Funky Fish in Brough. We ring the order in and collect 10 minutes later, freshly fried for us. The fish dippers (goujons) are gorgeous. 8 little strips of fish, totally succulent with light, crispy batter, absolutely gorgeous. We love the tartare and curry sauces and the peas. Excellent portions, excellent packaging. Cannot be faulted, just shuts too early!

Pure white fish and perfectly cooked chips, not too greasy either. My only fault is they are a bit stingy with the chips, would appreciate a few more.

The fish is always fresh and well cooked and very tasty. For me there sage putty’s are amazing and extremely tasty.

Large fish & chips are very large ! I usually get the smallwer portion, the fish is superb, usually cooked fresh while you wait, let them know what you want as you go in.

Usually our favourite chippy but very under par tonight 31/8/17 we waited for the fish to be cooked so we expected it to be good but when we got it the fish was hardly covered in batter (you could see the fish through the batter)and soggy and this was from the shop to the car parked outside the shop it's not as if we had opened when we got home.A very disappointing meal and not cheap especially when we bought it as a treat.

Definitely a place for the fussy eater good food clean environment go only when the owner is frying as his staff are deplorable when he's not there, otherwise excellent fish and good chips shame his staff let him down

Great food... if your not too hungry go for the small specials as still quite adequate ..generous helpings of tartare sauce comes free..not proper fish n chips without it!! If in a hurry order in advance as normally quite a queue. Enjoy

Fish is lovely and white. Batter is crispy and golden.All served hot in a sturdy box. Cooked freshly but minimum waiting time.

I have bought fish and chips from this place many times and it is our chippy of choice in Brough. Excellent, good sized haddock cooked to perfection. Free tartare sauce thrown in as well. We will be back!

This is the best fish and chip shop in Brough although they are a bit tight with the chips, but everywhere in East Yorkshire seems to be. Would definitely recommend this place though.

Having used this fish shop many many times since it opened I have always been delighted with the quality of the food. However the last twice I have noticed a sad decline in quality. Tonight I called and bought 2 fish which surprisingly I didn't have to wait for. The fish were chewy, overcooked and had clearly been standing there a while. Very disappointed

Its a big statement to say that funky fish serves the best fish & chips in the area, but personally to me, it really does. Fish is always fresh, offers a good selection of patties from traditional sage pattie through to cheese & onion patty. Reasonable priced and clean inside. I will always sing my praises about this place and be a reoccurring customer.

They always have fresh skinless fish, our favorite since it was open! Prices are good value and I even get extra sause for free

I love the option to choose weather I want my food boxed or wrapped, this is why i moved to funky fish from 53 North. At 53 North I only ever recieved my fish and chips boxed. As a customer this disatisfied me me therefore i have it wrapped. it brings back memories of when i was a child and we used to sit on a bench with my grandparents. That is why i love to getr my fish and chips wrapped.

Best fish and chips in the area consistently. Lovely batter, fish & mushy peas with plenty of chips. A bonus as no washing up required when it comes in its own box

Food well up to standard - I always ask for fresh cooked, and they do it for me.My one criticism is that - although on their menu board, they offer tartar sauce as included with the fish, often one does not get it. Either they have none left, or they just do not bother, which is naughty. Scampi is nothing without tartar - tighten up a bit, Funky Fish !Also, this last time my partner complained that the scampi were not whole animals, but bits. This also needs attention.

There are 2 fish and chip shops in Brough and this one is the standout performer. Whilst the chips aren't the best chips I've ever had the fish is always fantastic beautiful white funky flakes beautifully cooked. Service usually good though sometimes there seems like to many chiefs but overall very good

Having been out with friends for the day we decided to pick up fish and chips on the way back to their house in Elloughton. My friend went in and ordered fish and chips x 2 plus two pots of mushy peas The price was £10.00 We arrived at their house and when she started to open up the first box said there were no chips - this was the case for both - so it was a costly takeaway for two fish and two pots of peas.I rang the shop and spoke to a young lady who I asked jokingly had the price of fish increased dramatically before explaining what had happened. She was slightly flummoxed but said they had a new Serving Assistant and if we mentioned the problem next time we visited they would let us have our 'Chips'!The fish tasted ok as did the peas - however it would have been even nicer with the chips!!

Visit this chippy regularly - but I have seen better.Prices are average - fish chips & peas for 6.00 - or 5.00 for smallAlso offer sausages, fish dippers, chicken nuggets, burgers etc.Fish is great quality but the chips seem to be a bit greasy and tasteless. However, this is my personal opinion and shouldn't affect your views. They are served in cardboard boxes - good for recycling - but bad in terms of grease!Apparently you have to shout to the fryers how many fish you want - not very formal - especially if your not very confident like me. Some of the workers seem a bit bored when you give a large order, and have sometimes got it wrong - fore example, asks for 3 F&C and 1 Chicken Nuggets, I only got 3 F&C.They also have a habit of giving you 2 small sausages instead of 2 larger -which apparently don't taste as nice. You need to make them know that you definitely want a large sausage not a small!But overall, not a bad little village chippy which I would recommend for everyone. The also do kids meals as well.Open Mon-Sat Lunchtime and then 4-9pmNot open on Sunday's - which I find odd for a takeaway - apparently they've "Gone Fishing"

If anyone in my family fancies a Fish and Chip takeaway, this is the first option we would go for. It always exhibits a swift and cheerful service, with decent food.The food itself is never too greasy and consistently fresh, it's made with what appears to be good quality ingredients (the haddock is extremely chunky and tasty). We will continue to use this as our "first choice chippy".

Was met once again by the surly miserable attitude of the serving staff who lack basic manners of please and thank you. Does the owner of this shop not read the reviews to see how their patrons are being treated by the staff? Kids wanted cheesy chips - one melted and one not. To ask for this you'd think I've got two heads or something! I received a mucky look I'd have been proud of! Maybe they're on the charm school waiting list! Good food but staff always make me think twice about calling in again......

We regularly have a lunch time takeaway, once or twice a month. The proprietor is an amenable, welcoming man, and on the one occasion he got our order wrong, he gave us double portions to compensate, which was a handsome gesture.The lunchtime food we get is always excellent, and the chips are sublime. I consider the portions plentiful. The service is pleasant, fast and slick, so I was more than surprised to read the complaints about the evening service ! I hope it has been rectified by now. My only criticism is that I wish there were more than one species of fish available !But I wholeheartedly recommend Funky Fish !

It's got to be one of the best Fish and chip shops around. Really nice fish cooked to order so best tell them as you walk through the door.

Since this place opened a couple of years ago (maybe more) I have visited about every few months. The quality of the fish never varies; first class; as is the free Tartar Sauce.

Their produce is good although a bit on the pricey side for the quantity you get. Great if you like fish without batter on.

When this shop first opened it was first class. Unfortunately it has gone downhill, the fish and chips are greasy and the fish gets smaller each time we visit which will be not very often in the future.

When you really want fish and chips but not the greasy aftertaste.... The Funky Fish is it. Consistently good. It is always busy which, when there is another chippy down the road and various Chinese and Indian offerings, along with a number of pubs... speaks for itself.

Ordered 2 adult fish & 2 kids fish dippers. The lady frying asked how many fish I wanted and I mistaking told her 2 as I thought the fish dippers were separate. Oh my days, you would have thought I'd shot her in the foot with the outrage when she found out. I was literally yelled at from behind the counter! Normally you get 4 dippers with the kiddy meals and tonight we got 2! Maybe punishment for my mistake?! Bad bad service!!

I would like to begin by saying that the food is generally good, although the portion size does depend on who serves. I wanted to write a review as I have been recently disappointed by the staff (or more probably one staff member at the takeaway). One member of staff became argumentative in both returning the correct change (due to not having all items ordered - even though I was not told until it had been paid and served), and was also being nasty to other staff members. I also asked for scraps, which was also dealt with in an unpleasant manner.I have always gone this takeaway previously, but am unlikely to return, due to other takeaways in Brough. I hope that staff receive better advice about customer service in the future.

As far as fish and chip shops go, this one is OK, however there are better ones around the town of Brough and surrounding areas. The shop front looks impressive and gives a quality vibe, however, thats where the quality vibe ends. I found the fish to be over cooked and tasteless and the chips where not that good. I also had peas which were OK, however, they were just bog standard taking whereas other places have a nice aftertaste.

I've tried the rest and this Is the fish & Chip shop | always go back to. Great fresh fish. Free Tartare sauce! Not being from Yorkshire I do find that I can't get great chips anywhere. Funky fish is the same I'm afraid. I like my chips crisp on the outside. No luck so far. Be aware there is often a queue though the wait is never that long.

Great fish and chips at an even better price than normal! Have been coming here since it opened (and never visited the other fish and chip shop since!).. Love the skin free fish, crispy batter and that its always in a box that helps keep it grease free. Oh, and free tartare sauce! De-lish... long may it continue (and give half price weeks from time to time!)

I had been to the gym and so felt that I deserved a sinful meal to go with the beer lurking in my fridge so I went to Funky Fish, which serves, it has to be said, the best fish and chips for many miles around. They close at 9.00pm and I arrived at 8.35. I was greeted by a seriously grumpy message from behind the fryers, relayed to the poor girl who was serving: "I'm not putting anything else in. Tell 'em there's just what they can see on top. There wasn't any fish left. Just two patties and a few chips. So, 25 minutes to go to closing time and the fish and chip shop was now just a chip shop. I was gutted. I had been sweating away in the gym in the certain hope of flaky haddock to come (with tartare sauce naturally).So, to the owners: tell the miserable crone behind the fryers that she can't knock off early just because she can't be bothered to cook another lot of fish (the place was packed with customers) and metaphorically stick two fingers up at your customers.You guys do so many things right and are to be congratulated but you can't afford for your team to infuriate your customers like this. Word about things like this spreads like wildfire. Believe me! It's already happening.

I had my fish and chips just before closing time on a Friday lunch and it appears the fish had been sat in the range for a considerable amount of time. The batter was extremely over cooked and was over crunchy (personal opinion) and it seemed that extra batter was added to hide the amount of fish you actually get. Chips were nice but the actual fish was tasteless and generally poor quality and in my opinion not Norwegian line caught as advertised, more like defrost fish (double frozen).general opinion is that I won't be returning any time soon as £5.70 could be well spent elsewhere!

Great fish and chips and liked the added extra of homemade tartare sauce. Service is ok, I think that is down to the long queues! which speaks volumes!
