We were allowed to spend the night in the oldest room in the house. A little gem that we didn't expect on our Coast to Coast tour. Whirlpool meets museum - beautifully and lovingly restored. Also very nice operators! Nice little town, wonderful Italian restaurant around the corner. Really nice place to stay.

We checked out the hotel on Booking, com and Trip Advisor and neither pointed out that the restaurant has been closed for dinner for 3 years, although both show good reviews for the non-existent food. Breakfast is served and was very good. The Frenchgate Restaurant & Hotel website does mention no dinner but its been phrased like it was just coming out of covid and that all would be well soon. We actually booked with the owners and it was only when I phoned back and asked about reserving a table did David say that it was shut but he did provide a good map of other restaurants which, to be fair, were very local and good. The hotel itself is in a good location but showing its age which considering that the cottage we were in was dated from about 1650 can't be too harshly criticised. Tv channels need updating and WiFi non existent in the room. Comfortable and clean but wouldn't book again.

This little hotel is charming and well suited to the village of Richmond. A hearty English or American breakfast is served each morning, along with smaller options. The food and happy service is excellent. A lovely garden in the back filled with flowers and bird calls each evening tops off a day wandering castle and abbey ruins or exploring the nearby market square. Cocktails in the garden anyone? David Todd, Proprietor, is the man that makes this hotel really stand out. He is funny, kind and generous with his knowledge of the village and his excellent martinis! It is a small property, but abundant with personal comforts. I highly recommend Frenchgate!

We had room Nr.1, the biggest rip off we ever had in GB. A damp small room, with just one nightstand and one reading lamp. When we opened the little closet, a cloud of dust cane out. There was mold in the bathroom and under the bedroom window. The TV does not have any BBC. The hotel, according to there website, has free Wi-Fi, but it died not reach this room. We talked to the owner about this, he was not sorry at all, he said ”you should have send a special request. Booking.com makes mistakes all the time.” Well we travel a lot and never ever had that problem, when the hotel had wifi, it’s everywhere. The WiFi in the main house is poor as well. All this for a good 155 pound. I call this rude. It is at a cobbled street, you feel every car driving by as if it were in your room. The beds are comfy though. The breakfasts is good.

A recent stay over the Easter weekend, we arrived and we’re met with a friendly approach that continued throughout the stay. A very insightful brief on the hotel and accommodation and we weren’t disappointed, like a few have said the beds are HUGE and the en-suite room was lovely. Breakfast was plentiful and fresh, with more choice to match the majority of visitors taste I’m sure. I would have preferred slightly larger cups in the room but that may be as I like my coffee, they were more than adequate for a standard cup. We’d definitely consider staying again as the proximity to the centre of Richmond is perfect, parking can be an issue but we were lucky enough to park right outside, a very pleasant stay thank you.

We had a lovely stay myself and my partner. On arrival the member off staff on the desk helped us to the car park then met us out there, offering to help with our bags. The room was a good size as was the en-suite. The bed was huuuge!! Great for me and my partner as we are both tall. Located in a good spot close to everything but also quiet. We had a lovely garden view. David was amazing, absolutely brilliant host. Really engaging and made you feel so welcome. Breakfast was delicious and made fresh with quality produce. This is a small private hotel with 9 rooms. Very clean and homey. I liked the friendly service, food, bed and quiet of the environment. Parking is just outside. The location is perfect, could not be better. On a negative side: my room was overlooking the main entrance, I could hear everyone talking due to old windows. Also the street lights are bright and shutters do not block the light. Otherwise it was a comfortable 2-night stay. I would recommend this hotel.

Nice period property in a nice town. Close to all roads and town centre shops, pubs etc. David the owner dealt with me directly and we upgraded to the bridal suite where both Phil Colins and Eric Clapton have slept!!! Breakfast really nice and nice breakfast room. Eggs benedict BEST i have ever had. Smaller points which stopped me giving a 5 are: The room was £310 so I would have expected cafetiere coffee at breakfast and better quality biscuits needed in the drinks tray. Also, we were offered a £60 complimentary bottle of champagne with our upgrade which neither of us drink so I asked for a nice bottle of red instead. We got a £10.99 Merlot so slightly disappointed!!! Overall, however, nice staff, nice building and worth a visit. There is a carpark to the rear of the building if you can't park at the front

We have just returned from a two night stay in this small but charming hotel. We stayed in room 7 on the top floor, which was very spacious, incorporating an absolutely huge 7’ bed, feature bath and large bathroom with walk-in shower. The hotel was situated very close to all amenities, with Richmond Castle being only a short walk away. Very friendly and welcoming staff made our stay extremely enjoyable and my breakfast of eggs Benedict was very tasty. Unfortunately parking to the front of the hotel was very limited but they have a car park not too far away. Highly recommended for a short visit but unfortunately the restaurant was closed, but there are other restaurants close by.

Stayed in the bridal suite on first inspection the room looked lovely but looking closer the paint is peeling off in the passage to the bathroom and on the ceiling near the wardrobe. The curtain fabric has come away from the rings and there was a large plastic sheet over the ceiling above the fireplace where there been a leak. The bath although jacuzzi is so small you would struggle to get an adult in it (this is not shown on the website) but the most annoying thing being asked to pay £10 each corkage fee when asking for 2 wine glasses to enjoy a drink in our room that we had bought. Not worth the £285 price tag at all. Will return to Richmond as beautiful but not here . Girl on reception was absolutely lovely though.

My husband and I stayed overnight en route back from Scotland. We ate in the restaurant. Our room was lovely, nice big bath, two seats (so often hotel rooms for two only have one seat!) and some nice touches such as a ceiling fan and fresh coffee bags on the hospitality tray. We had a three course evening meal which was excellent, interesting menu and very well executed, including making some changes for my dietary needs. The owner was on hand to chat and make us feel welcome, and gave some helpful advice about dessert wine. This hotel is in an old Georgian house and some of the structural elements of the building need attention. There was damp on our ceiling. Discolouration on door and window frames. However, the fixtures and fittings are very stylish and comfortable, the staff superb and the food of very high quality. Will stay again when next visiting the area.

A charming boutique hotel on a Georgian cobbled street in historic Richmond. Attractive rooms with good facilities:- modern showers; large beds; hypo-allergenic bedding. Excellent food which was better than many AA 2 stars we've visited; and a good wine list with some unusual wines - try Aleatico, a sweet Italian red, which will challenge your prejudices. Nicely decorated lounge and dining room; private parking to complement the free street parking; with a 400 metre walk to the centre of Richmond - an ancient town that you HAVE to visit.

Warm and friendly welcome to a lovely hotel with well presented rooms in an original Georgian townhouse. The furnishings and the very impressive bath in my room would be truly romantic if you were staying as a couple. The restaurant food and the service is awesome, and makes the meal special. The hotel is very convenient for both the town and for exploring the surrounding area.

We were recommended by a friend living locally in Richmond to try the Restaurant at Frenchgate and we were not disappointed. You are made to feel welcome the moment you walk in, David the host is very entertaining. The food was amazing, can't fault anything at all and good value for money.

We had a long drive up to Catterick to go racing and chose this as our overnight stay- had the most fantastic time and the food and service was second to none. Great wine and food and time spent was exceptional with good chat and some great after meal drinks served up by the owner - I would make a big detour if I ever was anywhere close to visit again - Paul & Jane Jenkins

Me and my partner stayed here for one night as a birthday surprise. The hotel was lovely and the room we booked, the Napoli suite with the egg bath was gorgeous. No complaints at all. The lady who took us to our room was very helpful and friendly. We then met the owner/manager (Dave) we wasn't sure what to make of him, he seem to follow us and was everywhere we turned! We went into to Richmond for food and drinks in the evening, very nice place. When we came back to the hotel I sat on a chair that was on the landing (no signs saying do not sit) as I did, the leg came off and the chair collapsed ,I am a size 14 by the way, almost immediately Dave was right there even tho we was on the third floor. He wasn't very nice and rather rude to me about the situation even though I apologised and explained it was an accident. He threatened to kick us out the hotel at this point! The following morning as we checked out, Dave landed us a £150.00 bill for the broken chair as it was apparently an antique, even though it was in the public landing displaying no signs that you were not allowed to sit on this! We argued that if we sat on a chair for breakfast and the same thing happened would we be charged? Dave said as we had been drinking it was unacceptable. I wasn't aware you were not allowed to consume alcohol when staying here! He explained he had been watching us walk down the street from the pub and we could not walk, this was due to the night we stayed we had the "ice rain" that fell and everywhere was like an ice rink, weird that he was watching us also! After a very heated argument at the reception desk and Dave threatened to call the police on my partner if we did not pay this my partner had to cough up much to our anger. All in all this hotel is beautiful however you have to be a "Dave" sort of person to fit in and we clearly didn't and will not be returning. He also turns his nose up if you have booked the room through booking.com rather than direct !

The only hotel we have stayed in which is constantly excellent. For various reasons we stay there three to four times a year. Comfortable rooms with thoughtful touches e.g. spacious showers, heated floor, ceiling fan, real coffee in room, large comfortable beds.First class restaurant. Efficient friendly staff and owner who genuinely try to cater to every whim.

Room dirty with stained wall which was "pigeon and water ingress" apparently. Tiles behind sink had pubic hair smeared on which my partner had to clean off. Being disturbed by hotel manager after midnight shouting at a couple who had returned to their room "drunk" which was "unacceptable for his establishment" and threatening to throw them onto the streets past midnight for their behaviour. Our romantic night away suddenly ruined. Had to ask for breakfast order to be taken as we'd been ignored by staff to then be asked for an extra gratuity when checking out???? Joke!!!!

Very welcoming staff, could not be more helpful. The room was very comfortable, the 7ft bed dominated. Provision made for tea/coffee well thought out and plentiful. The room itself was quite dark however very cosy. The en-suite was spacious with all the extra details well thought out and stylish.Couple of maintenance issues in the bedroom i.e. some peeling wallpaper and appeared to be a leak from the radiator to the carpet, however, these are minor notes. The room & en suite were very clean.Overall very pleasant stay and would recommend and certainly return if in the area.

This was our 4th visit to the Frenchgate and probably the best , service and staff was excellent . The food and wine are beyond compare and all I can say is you get what you pay for and although it is quite expensive it’s worth every penny.

A very quiet pub when we went in, real ales were great and kept well. I did find out this pub is up for sale so maybe that is why the atmosphere was a bit lacklustre.

Visited for the 1st time in over 20 years ( due to raising family) and being from Norfolk, wasn't disappointed so pleased for these people who took over when it was either dale farm or dairy crest who decided to close the site down !!! Wonderful experience and lovely staff, great day out and got my favourite supply of Wensleydale and cranberry 😁

Excellent. Very friendly staff behind the bar (2 young ladies). Good beer and excellent food. Need I say more?! Definitely a “must” for anybody visiting Wensleydale.
