Great little pub with a nice atmosphere. The staff were very helpful with finding gluten free options, I loved the bread!

Outstanding Sunday lunch. The staff were friendly and attentive, the food piping hot and delicious. The lightly battered cauliflower was a delight as we're the 'proper' Yorkshires. Our dog was very comfortable and no bother, even he managed to chill.

Quiet pub with a great menu, good service and good food. Fish was a bit over cooked but our family meals were top quality.

Went for mid afternoon Sunday roast, pork was moist, crackling crunchy and tasty.

Our Easter Sunday lunch was ruined today by the shocking level of service. I have never dined somewhere before and felt like I was causing an inconvenience when asking the waitress (landlady) for anything during the meal. Toilets were overflowing with urine and the landlord/landlady had no interested to in resolving the issue. When serving such mediocre food you would think they would at least make an attempt at providing a good level of service. I certainly will not be returning.

My wife and have been eating here for a number years and have never had a bad or even an ok meal. The food has always been of the highest standard. The welcome from James and his family has been fantastic and the atmosphere is that of a traditional English pub of the past. The Shoulder of Mutton would always be my first choice to take anyone to, to sample first class cuisine in such a welcoming environment. There no one thing on the menu I could recommend, having tried them all they are all as excellent as each other.

Called in en route along A1 instead of stopping at the sévices. Place was packed. We both had beef Sunday dinner. Excellent beef nicest I’ve had for a long time. Service was excellent. Fast. Really fast. Quicker than services and 50x better. I will call in again

Nice atmosphere food wholesome , down side was there was a power cut so no food being served a glass off wine would off been welcome on the house as token for the customers

Fantastic food, lovely staff, very friendly atmosphere. Food was outstanding, we ate there the first night of our trip and booked straight away for the second. Don't pass this by, if you're looking for somewhere to eat in this area you have found it. Stop looking 😀

Visited with my daughter and her partner recently. Lovely cosy country pub just off the A1M . The fish and chips were delicious, crispy flavoursome batter and chunky fish . My daughter's fish pie also got a thumbs up from her. During our lunch there was an unfortunate issue for a lady with a health problem, but the lady who I assumed was the landlady handled it well until the ambulance arrived --my daughter went to get the local defibrillator in case it was required. Hope the lady recovered ok. The landlord provided excellent service on his own. Top notch hostelry

Booked for Sunday dinner, absolutely perfect atmosphere, as well as the most lovely staff and well... the food - delicious.. we had the Sunday roasts and beautiful fresh veg - 10 out of ten for flavour and quality. We will all be back xx

The food was amazing. We had 3 courses and they were all excellent. Presented really well and decent amount! The service was also excellent by all members of staff Only note - I asked for a small wine at the end and was served 175ml!

Found a Table for us at very short notice. Friendly Owner and staff. Food very good. We ate in the cozy Bar along with our small well behaved dog. Will definitely be back again.

Went for dinner at about 7pm on a Wednesday. We managed to get a table without booking. We ordered Salmon - with veg Burger - with chips Child's fish fingers, chips and peas. The Salmon was very tasty & the accompanying veggies were perfectly cooked. The burger was pretty average however the chips were superb. Child's plate was a very generous portion of fish goujons, chips and peas, enough to feed a starving child or a hungry adult. Deserts Banofee mess - delicious! Marmalade cheese cake - superb! The service was friendly & attentive and the food is reasonably priced

Seven of us had a meal here. The food was good. The service was mostly good. The atmosphere in the bar was lacking and slightly uncomfortable. Perhaps it is better in the restaurant?

It's be a long time since our last visit to the Shoulder. Was not disappointed, menu and food were very good and a good choice of beers. Will definitely return.

Booked a table on Thursday for Saturday at 6 30 for my wife and myself .we had eaten there a few weeks previously and enjoyed the food. On arrival last night we were expecting to eat in the restaurant but we were taken into the bar which was dark and not very comfortable with a wonky table. When you pay them sort of prices you don't expect to be put in the bar .Food was OK the chunky chips weren't so chunky vegetables consisted of 2 bits of Brockley mounje2 and green beans so not impressed

Called in adult and two kids , hadn’t booked , plenty of room and plenty of people eating. Was told need to make a reservation. Try to support local pubs but they weren’t interested. The mind boggles in times where these places are shutting at a steady rate. Edited for reply - you had a dozen or so benches outside all free which I said we’d be happy to sit at. The one table inside is not an argument for turning business away. Two kids would have had a basic meal, chips , burger etc I would have had anything available. Poor management and foresight don’t blame me for not supporting you. We ended up at the Black Bull.

A lot of years since our last visit. But still a wonderful quaint unspoilt British pub. Food excellent quality and very well prepared and presented. Reasonable prices across the board. Booking is essential as all tables in the area we were in had reserved markers on them

An amazing place to eat and drink, I've been here several times over the years and have never been disappointed. The food is absolutely fantastic, the staff are amazing, their attention to detail and service delivery is outstanding. As I'm normally in a private party of 14 , the service team are friendly, professional and attentive to our dining needs. I'd thoroughly recommend eating here, it's a privilege to visit here once a year. Thank you 😁👍

Katsu curry here is to die for. The olive and bread sharing starter could benefit from a greater variety of bread. Ox cheek main course off the specials board was super lush.

What a great little country pub, what a find! Really friendly staff, very good service and the food was excellent - two of us had the beef and ale pie both of the opinion best we have ever had. If up in the area again would definitely call in again.

A proper pub with great food and service.

We arrived at this pub by mistake and as we walked in with our dogs, we were approached and not greeted by the apparent land lady who abruptly snapped ' Have you booked a table', We replied no and was disgustingly looked up and down, like we were a piece of dirt. We decided not to stop for a drink as we felt we was not good enough to be in her pub. As we left the apparent land lady pulled a face and grunted to the other gentleman behind the bar, which may have been the landlord. Admitedly we were under-dressed, but it appears we were judged by our appearence. We are key workers, especially myself who has worked through the pandemic tirelessly and being high standing in my community, having a respected position. It was embarrassing for us, and we certainly will not be returning or recommending this pub. She made us feel inadequate and humiliated. Completly unfriendly, unprofessional and lacked customer service. We do not recomend this pub, especially if your just passing for a drink.

Great, proper country pub, with consistently good food, service and beer. We stay in nearby Richmond twice each year and always make sure we visit the Shoulder of Mutton each time - we’ve been eating here for about six years now. Booking ahead is useful as they’re usually busiest early in the evening (and closed Monday and Tuesday). There’s always a staple of things they do very, very well - such as a steak pie, fish and chips, fish pie, cheese soufflé, sharing boards etc - as well as specials, such as black pudding bon bons and deep fried squid. You’ll usually be spoiled for choice, put it like that. We’re big fans of Black Sheep and that’s usually on tap. The steak pie is consistently good, as are the double dipped chunky chips. Highly recommended.

Great food, there were 5 of us and we all picked something different. We were all very happy with our meals. All piping hot and freshly cooked. Staff really friendly.

Had our second meal here on Sat' evening, the 11th of March. The deep filled steak and ale pie was delicious!. Staff attentive, and not at all "pushy" as some places tend to be. We will certainly return!.

Brilliant food, well prepared. Perfect pies, battered cauliflower, Yorkshire parkin, homemade scotch egg, chicken catsu curry, are just the highlights. They have more too! Definitely try this pub. It's gone straight into my top 5 favourites.

A accidental yet fantastic three course meal. We turned up without a booking on a Thursday night, there was a great atmosphere and lucky for us the staff were able to accommodate us. We only intended on having mains but having seen the menu decided that starters were a must. So the spicy parsnip soup and deep fried camembert wedges were followed by the steak and ale pie (morw than worth the wait for the additional cooking time) and a vegetarian friendly version of rhe katsu curry, which was off menu and we couldn't be more grateful as it was sublime. Desert was the Victoria sponge cheese cake and chocolate brownie with ice cream. All served by brilliant and welcoming staff in great surroundings and a very reasonable bill at the end. Highly reccomended, will be back. Originally reccomended to eat here by the staff at West Layton Manor nearby.

Lovely food, beautiful premises. Lady who served us was mega helpful with our order as we had a toddler with us who only eats vegetables 🙄. We will have to go back to have the other lovely looking meals that kept going past us. Thank you for a lovely experience for my husbands birthday.

Friendly, cosy, quality pub and restaurant. Very good food with wide selection of dishes including a specials board. There's a car park out back and lots of outdoor seating out front for nicer weather / time of year. 2 starters, 2 mains and a couple of drinks came to over £70 which is a little higher than expected, but all was well cooked, flavoursome, quality and delivered with a smile, so worth the cost.

Food was amazing. The cheese souffle starter was amazing, especially if you are a big fan of cheese. I had ox cheek from the specials board for main. Was too full to finish the gorgeous fresh vegetables. Was so good, some of us went again the following week

Lovely meal on a Friday lunchtime, we went as a group of 6 for my mum's 88th birthday. Lots of choice on the menu and specials board. The meals were hot, fresh and cooked to order. My partner was very happy that his choice of steak pie was a proper pie with a pastry bottom and top, not just a pie topper.

Excellent restaurant. About half a mile down the minor road leading from the Scotch Corner travelodge southbound. Best to make a reservation as extremely popular bar/ restaurant. nice atmosphere inside with old world charm. Subdued lighting. Plenty of car parking space at the rear. We both had the speciality beef pie; homemade. baked to order which is about 25 minutes. Good wine list to suit most and reasonable prices too per bottle. Really enjoyed it. Good service too.

Blown away by the service we just received. Half way through a long journey and desperate for a hearty meal, they were so accommodating to find us a table even though they were fully booked. FANTASTIC ,food, service is superb, their sauces and gravy are unbelievable, and the crowning final component to wonderful meals, nothing is too much trouble. and prices are most reasonable this is "FINE DINING". Our only problem is we are 200 plus miles away I am an ex chef so finding somewhere like this is a breath of fresh air

Shocking service when we arrived after a long day, absolutely starving. Man who met us at the bar and informed us there was a long wait for food which was fine. We enquired how long and he said "you know what, don't bother, we haven't got a table for you anyway". A quick glance around the restaurant and the bar showed 4 or 5 free tables. It was 8.15 and they serve food until 9.30 on Saturdays. I'd recommend, if you can't cope with a busy kitchen on a Saturday, don't have a restaurant.

Overpriced cold food. Spent over £100 on 3 adults and two children. Miserable staff. Didn't leave tip as it cost way too much for what it was and not a smile raised even with empty pub. Location is great. Either up your game with the food or get nicer staff in to compensate for the dreary offering served.

We went because the website indicated it was steak night. But the prices turned out to be double that stated on the website. When I questioned this I was referred to the "Specials" board. We never looked at that as we knew what we wanted.

The friendliness of staff, general ambience and quality of food male this inn really stand out. Generous portions, fresh and tasty dishes. Definitely recommend.
