Popped in yesterday afternoon with my wife for quick pint on a wet and windy afternoon before heading into town for a concert. This place is an absolute gem. Good beer, friendly staff, old fashion and rustic and great views up the River Tyne. There is nothing fancy about this place it’s just the way a pub should been.

Having walked the Ouseburn valley we wanted a beer and a rest before walking into the city centre. The bar was bustling with sociable drinkers and the bar staff offered us a sample of IPA-type beers to help us choose. Our table had a good view out over the Tyne and the beer was great. The toilets were rudimentary but in keeping with the overall vibe of the pub. Great pub for craft beer aficionados.

From the outside not sure what to expect but then Jenny the barmaid was super welcoming from the get go. The price for drinks I don't think I've paid cheaper than here. We did think decor looked a bit dated but then realised its a listed property which means not much can be changed but makes it even more a special place. Was busy with Rugby on TV and a local event made the day for us. We also met the previous Landlady Brenda she is a one of a kind person, welcoming lovely and made time to chat. As a group of girl friends we had an amazing time after only stopping for one drink to still being there 6 hours later and already planning on a return visit.

Just to let people know that the Free Trade Inn is now back open every day from 11.00am serving the usual (and unusual) excellent beers, ciders etc. Freshly made to order pizza every Wednesday evening and additional snacks and treats at the weekend too. Please note that the toilets were completely refurbished to a high standard towards the covid closure so ignore some of the earlier comments about those now. A Byker gem sitting on the edge of the Ouseburn with the best views of the river and The Toon. Don't miss it. RIC9380

The Free Trade Inn overlooking the River Tyne was a great pub my twin brother Stephen and I visited on our recent weeks holiday in Newcastle. I loved the look of this pub, the interior is superb, a solid wood serving bar dominates the main room, pubby decor and furnishings including plenty of seating options spread throughout this pub, its a great pub to unwind in. We were here on a Wednesday evening, pub was busy with a great atmosphere, we ordered a pale ale each, these were served in excellent condition, we just kicked back, chilled out and soaked up the great vibe in this busy and popular pub. My pale ale was really good, a crisp, well balanced pale ale, hints of toffee and a delicious aroma and aftertaste with a slight bitter finish to it, a classic British pale ale, it was just so good being in such a lovely pub enjoying a quality brew and to be served by staff who are genuinely pleased to see you in their pub. We both really enjoyed pale ale's in here before we moved on and although our visit was only fleeting for a first time visit to The Free Trade Inn we were totally impressed. The Free Trade Inn is easy to locate along Lawrence Road. Opening hours are; Monday & Tuesday, Closed. Wednesday to Sunday, Open from 1pm. Most definitely well worth checking out if you're in the area.

The Free Trade Inn is an excellent cask ale pub in Ouseburn that offers a great range of real ale and ciders and is without doubt one of the best pubs in Newcastle. A great pub that gives superb views of the Newcastle/Gateshead Quayside and is an excellent pub to relax and unwind. Housed in a traditional pub building which has a superb beergarden'the inside has a proper real ale look and feel with a superb shabby charm that looks like it hasn't been altered in years. We visited here on a recommendation by a barmaid in the Cumberland Arms who said this pub was well a visit if you are into cask ales and we weren't disappointed. With a superb range of cask ales we where spoiled for choice and decided to have an excellent cask ale each which where really good and well priced. Make no mistake this is a serious cask beer pub and should be visited if you are ever in Newcastle and it is very easy to get to from Walker Road-St Lawrence Square bus stop its a short walk.(This is my first review of the Free Trade Inn). Opening Hours. Monday-Tuesday-Closed. Wednesday-Sunday-13.00-22.00. Nearest Bus Stop. Walker Road-St Lawrence Square bus stop

This place was recommended by a friend and I wasn't let down. Terrific traditional pub with a great view up the Tyne and 2 nice beer gardens. It has a bit of a studenty vibe but I like that. ! Lugar peculiar pero caro sólo para ver.

This is the best pub in Newcastle. We have to fight to keep it! Amazing beers served in a friendly and cosmopolitan atmosphere. Great outdoor space with two separate beer gardens with lots of seating. Breathtaking, staggering view of the quayside. If I had to choose only one pub to go to for the rest of my life it would be this one. It's being surrounded by blocks of flats now, every few years there's a petition going round to stop some development or other which would ruin the view. That would be a terrible shame. Three of us went to the Free Trade yesterday lunchtime. I used to work in the East End of Newcastle and knew it well, so did my pals, although none of us had been there since before the Millenium. At first glance, nothing much appears to have changed. The toilets are still full of grafitti, everything is tobacco-stained and the furniture is still falling to bits. Fabulous view of the Tyne , now with the Sage and the Millenium Bridge. But things HAVE changed. They were selling one beer at £7 a pint, there's a wine list (wine, in Byker?) with wines starting at around £16 a bottle; an extensive range of bottled and draught beers, and, inevitably, Hipsters. In truth The Free Trade is now more Camden Lock than Ouse Burn and the title of this review is what my mate Ed said about it. I think he's right.

Went here for the first time with friends. I've always known it was there but thought it was some sort of biker bar with sawdust on the floor. I wasn't that far wrong but was totally wrong to judge it as somewhere that would be unwelcoming. No frills (or skirting boards) an interesting graffiti theme in the gents and resident cat. I'm not a beer drinker but wasn't made to feel like a leper. Three lagers to choose from, one was some ridiculous percentage and the other sounded too scary so opted for the 4% option which was nice enough. Got sprayed with lemonade by the barman and after the slightest acknowledgement that could have passed for an apology in a nightclub, I enjoyed myself. Nice crowd of alternative/retro/northern soul types, amazing view up the Tyne and a cute as feck barman with Harry Potter glasses. Can't imagine why I waited so long to try the place. Recommended and will return with waterproof clothing and an irresistible chat up line for the barman.

Actually some were not so delicious to my taste but avoided those because staff offered tasters. Friendly staff, pleasant clientele and an amusing pub cat. Don't think it was a restaurant as categorised by trip advisor but it had massive stottie sandwiches!

Why is this place so popular?! Probably one of the worst pubs I've been to, it's your stereotypical spit and sawdust haunt... have you seen the toilets? Scruffy & full of graffiti, no doubt the uber trendy & hip labour loving lefties who frequent this establishment will tell me how it adds character....really? You can tell a lot about a pub from the state of their toilets in my honest opinion & their toilets are utter rank! No longer do they serve the mainstream lagers instead they serve beer from some brewery called Allendale from the far reaches of Northumberland who obviously think a great tasting lager should have notes of McEwans and LCL so let's lap it up & sell it for £4.40 a pint :o?!?! I may aswell go down to the pitcher and piano which is clean has a more respected clientele immaculate toilets, panaramic views of the Tyne and bridges with a pint of PERONI yes PERONI not Allendale rank for£4.50 I know where I'm taking my hard earned in future! I'd be delighted if someone can enlighten me about this place & tell me why everyone loves it so, cos this guy just doesn't get it AT ALL!!

Very important for North Americans, this is not a restaurant, they don't serve food. This is a pub, primarily setup for having drinks with friends. A couple of food trucks were setup outside for those wanting food.Well we didn't have that great a view, it was raining. But even with the rain we could see down to the river and look out quite a bit. On a sunny day the view would be fantastic. The pub has a comfortable, welcome feel to it. Which was added to by the resident cat. Not sure what his name is, but he has his own spot and is willing to socialize with the customers... :)The beer selection was varied and unique. I think they were in the middle of a sour, hoppy phase. But there were still a few stouts and malty ales to choose from. Excellent value when looking for a pint.

Lovely old fashioned friendly pub with a great selection of beers but sadly they have stopped doing Guinness (when they did do it, it was as good as the Guinness in Ireland) and the stout they serve now is just not of the same caliber. Other than that a lovely spot for a drink.

Having sunk a few pints in many bars around the world I can say from some experience this is one of the best. The beer is excellent, the free jukebox outstanding and the views breathtaking. There are plenty of outdoor seating areas for sunny days or the nicotine addicted and there's always a cat to stroke on a cold winters day. What more could you ask for? It's still a fairly unpretentious boozer and has a spit and sawdust feel but always safe and welcoming and the graffiti in the toilets certainly adds to the ambiance!

There's a reason this pub is so highly thought of. Actually, there's a few; friendly staff, great views over the Tyne, free jukebox, an embarrassingly good selection of beers and even a flippin' pub cat! I'm looking forward to sharing this gem with friends.

As the title says this is a proper pub. When I entered I struggled to chose a drink as it has such an extensive selection! The pub cat just makes the place!Well worth a visit.

I have visited the Free Trade on many occasions over the years, usually for a quick pint with colleagues after work. I say a quick pint, you wouldn't want to stay long enough to need the toilets. They're disgusting. Unless they've been renovated in the last 12 months.Other than that, good beer, good atmosphere (apart from the urine smell) and good views. I recommend sitting outside.

We visited here on a trip round the bars of the ouseburn area. There was a good selection of real ales and the scotch eggs are rather nice and we'll worth trying.May well return

One of the GEMS of Tyneside with garden areas which boast full views of all the bridges, The Baltic and The Sage as well as St. Nicks Cathedral and All Saints church.A vast range of real-ales are on offer, indeed there is something to suit everyone's palate and pub snacks and excellent pies are available. An excellent venue (don't forget your camera for views which change dramatically as the sun moves over to finally set behind the bridges "backdrop")

We'd been to the Ouseburn Festival which inevitably led us to the Free Trade for a drink. We hda a pint and a glass of sauv blanc, in glasses, and seemed to have just made it before the masses! The sun was shining, glistening off our great river, watching the jet skiers and the bridges, and people out for a walk.A glass of wine from nice bar staff and the famous view like that. Perfect. Suggested improvement: no surprise - the loos. yuk. Don't expect anything fancy but come on...

Great food, great drinks and very friendly staff. Very cozy on a winters evening. Highly recommend!

Music & cocktails are good but they kept the doors open (during a storm in December) so it was absolutely freezing on the dance floor. May as well pay to stand on the street.

Had an incident where some clothing was damaged due to some metal sticking out of a bench. Raised with manager multiple times but they just weren’t interested

Staff seem nice but food way overpriced. Paid £8 for a chocolate sundae which was so bland. In future I’ll go back to Mark Toneys as their sundaes are the best.
