What a nice surprise we had to find this warm, welcoming restaurant while out and about on the weekend! The pub we'd planned to go had been closed down and we found this place nearby. We enjoyed the food which was freshly cooked and worth a little wait, hunters chicken, cheese and bacon burger, and chicken korma were all delicious, fresh chips lovely, drinks were great, and lovely warm fire. Facilities were clean and tidy, and we had polite, friendly service. I can't fault it!

Do Not Eat Here … The Food is Inedible !!! We visited the Foxhunter earlier this afternoon ( 29th ) for Sunday Lunch. We both ordered beef & were disappointed to find they had run out of cauliflower cheese… which we were told should have been pre-ordered ??? The beef was grey in colour, really tough & tasteless… I only had one piece & couldn’t face another !! We both instantly agreed the food was awful & told the waitress … who went off to speak to the chef. We were offered a chicken alternative but politely refused & just wanted to leave. The plates were taken away & I politely went to the bar & offered to pay for the drinks. The deluded Manageress tried to charge me for one meal but I refused. I would respectfully suggest that the chef & Manageress visit other pubs & learn how to cook a Sunday Lunch

On arrival I asked about our table reservation but was interrupted by another customer who wanted to pay his bill. To my surprise, the waitress switched her attention to the other customer and ignored me. No big deal, I ordered drinks and my wife and I took them to the beer garden which was very good. We were directed to a table and chatted for a while before menus were supplied. There was also a blackboard showing the specials of the day. We ordered starters from the menu and the lamb and chicken from the specials. The starter was OK if a little overcooked and the lettuce had seen better days. The main courses were very poor. The chicken was very overcooked and the lamb was barely edible because it was so tough. How can lamb be tough? The Foxhunter should be great because of its location and potential ambiance but was let down by a combination of poor service and poor cooking.

The Sunday roast lamb was amongst the most delicious pieces of meat I have ever tasted. The rest of the plate was lovely too, although two of us did ask for cauliflower cheese as an extra but they had run out. Surprising as It was only 2pm. Wine was lovely and tables were spacious, not crammed in. Staff keen to please & knowledgeable about the menu. No cubicles in men’s toilets, which made me want to ask? Regardless of that we loved this gem so much we decided to book our next visit straight away. Excellent venue.

The website states that they serve Sunday lunch until 5pm. We reserved a table for 2.30pm. Waiting staff were very attentive in taking a drinks order. When it came to ordering food - the waitress said “ the only thing we have run out of is beef” They also had no chicken ( it was Turkey instead ) so I ordered lamb - which arrived in the form of one slice and some stringy bits. They had no more lamb so gave me some pork instead. Food was average - the gravy was like warm at best . Then they presented the dessert menu and told us they had no custard left. If you run out of food at 2.30pm, why advertise that you serve until 5pm I would not recommend visiting and will not be returning.

Visited The Fox Hunter with family who live locally, what a place! The atmosphere is lovely, very welcoming! We had a mixture of starters that we shared - all amazing BUT the whitebait is by far the best I have ever tasted (I’ve had a lot of whitebait in my 62 yrs)). Two of us had steaks for main, the others had curries. The steaks were absolutely delicious, they melted in the mouth. Again, as far as I’m concerned the very best I have ever had! 10/10!! The guys enjoyed their curries too! All in all I can 100% recommend this lovely pub! You will not be disappointed! Thanks guys - we will be back next time we are in the area!

absolutely loved it! came here last week. we went there for a meal after going for a walk with my partner and couldn’t have felt more at home! the staff were all so welcoming and the food was absolutely perfect! the wait for food flew by and felt like it had only been 2 minutes! me and my partner go for a lot of meals out and this has to be the best yet! couldnt have asked for anything more. Great food, great service and great drinks!!! lol This place felt like they worked as a family and not as just a work team. don’t have a bad word to say! the chef must’ve taken his time on the food considering it was absolutely spot on! Asked for some sauce and was given it within 5 seconds as well as being checked on many times to make make sure that we were all okay! It was an absolute lovely place to go to after a long walk, a nice drink and some food was just what we needed and were so glad we came here. Definitely recommend! definitely going back! I’ve posted this many time but trip advisor keeps on taking my reviews down but just wanted everyone to know how week looked after they will be here.

Had lunch here today it was lovely, the food was excellent. It was nice to be served food on hot plates that's one of my pet hates to be served food on cold plates. Did have to wait a while however it was worth it. We haven't been here for a few years however it's now going to be re added to our list. Would recommend this place to my friends and family, in fact already have.

Located in a tiny hamlet about a mile of so off the A4042, to the south of Abergavenny, this is a charming Welsh hostelry in an idyllic rural location. A railway line runs alongside the pub, although that doesn't detract from the overall ambience of the place - indeed the pub was originally one of the station buildings for the long disappeared station that once served this rural community. Staff are friendly and welcoming and there's a great range of ales on the bar; three in total and mostly from local or semi-local breweries, which is what we like to see. There's a great menu with all the pub classics alongside some nice, interesting choices. I have dropped a star from the food rating as the "crispy pork belly" was anything but crispy, the so-called crackling being inedible but, that aside, the food was well prepared and enjoyable, and reasonably priced. One small blot on an otherwise perfect venue, which also boasts a substantial garden, ideal for the summer.

Staff at foxhunter are very pleasant. We have been going there for many years and always enjoyed good food. Went last week and extremely disappointed with the food. Apparently there is a new chef which explains the sudden change in quality of cooking. Fish was undercooked. Mostly skin and greasy batter! Fat loading on top of Beef dish ! We didn't complain as 3 if our meals were bad. We just made a decision not to return until we hear there is a different chef. However, bar staff are always lovely.

I ordered 6 Sunday lunches for take away. 3 beef, 1 pork and 2 chicken - the chicken meals were for the children (aged 13 and 10).I picked up the meals and headed back to our rental property. On arrival I was disappointed to find we only had 3 Yorkshire puddings (obviously for the beef dinners) If you’ve got children you’ll know that Yorkshire puds are the favourite part of the meal for kids. So two of the adults gave up their Yorkshire puds - just felt it was very mean of the Foxhunter not to give everyone a Yorkshire pudding. The veg was only cabbage, carrots, swede and 1 roast parsnip each. I think we could have had peas too - they are cheap enough to buy. Apart from the roast potatoes there were no other potatoes (I would of expected mash or boiled potatoes too). Also there was barely enough veg to go around, one spoonful each of the swede. The dinners were very small - I don’t know if this is the same when you eat in the restaurant. To be fair the dinners were tasty and the gravy was tasty too and everyone had at least 2 roast potatoes and some even had 3.

Pre-lockdown, this place was a good place to visit. Real ale and a good place for pub grub. After an evening meal there this weekend, however, I have to say that the Covid situation has had a profoundly negative effect on the quality of their food, and the service speed. Our table was booked for 7.30pm and the starters didn't arrive until after 9pm. I had the whitebait, which instead of being crispy and flavoursome, was wet, slimy and tasteless. I sent this back and was not charged. My eldest daughter had the creamy garlic mushrooms, which comprised a few mushroom pieces in a fairly nondescript sauce, for £6.My main course was a £22 sirloin steak, which was cooked as requested, but similarly tasteless. I don't think it had been seasoned at all. The sauce, which was supposed to be creamy garlic and mushroom, was also flavourless, with no detectable presence of garlic. With the steak came a few bits of lettuce, a couple of small onion rings and two, seemingly raw, mushrooms. Not even a potato in sight, for £22 !! My youngest daughter's rack of ribs were well received, but the promised corn on the cob did not materialise. Having waited over an hour and a half for the food, and having already complained about the starter, we just ate what was in front of us without further ado. My wife and eldest daughter had the salmon fillet which was "Ok, but not as nice as mum's".Whilst I'm keen to support the "Eat out to help out" initiative in order to assist the local eateries in these financially existential times, I feel that The Foxhunter is not currently capable of providing the quality of food or service that their prices demand, by any stretch of the imagination. The staff were all very pleasant, and I'm sure they were facing an uphill struggle, but the fact remains that the result was poor. The meal cost me £90 and I would have felt short-changed had it been half that amount.

We have friends who live a mile or so from the Foxhunter and the last few times we have been in the area we have visited the pub. There is something about the place i really like. It could be the friendly staff, good ales, excellent food, or the general ambience....or maybe most of all that. Me and my wife had booked a table for a Tuesday evening. Greeted warmly on arrival, and after a short wait were shown to our table. They were doing a 3 course menu, and we gladly dived into that. All courses were excellent. Spring rolls and buffalo wings for starters.....gorgeous. For mains my wife had chicken burger and chips.. she suggests that maybe they swap some of the chips for salad...and i had a fantastic fish, chips and peas. Just when we thought it could not get much better, they bought our puddings. Baileys profiteroles and apple crumble...heaven. A couple of real ales to swill it down. We noticed they were running out of some of the options on the menu, but what we thought was good was they were then offering alternatives to customers. This really was an excellent evening, in a lovely pub with great staff.

We contacted Sue at the Foxhunter pub as it was my parents’ Golden wedding anniversary and we wanted to do something special for them to help celebrate this special occasion, especially as we were unable to visit. She was so accommodating and helpful and we soon put together a lovely chef prepared meal for their special day. Everything was delivered on time and was piping hot. My parents were thrilled with everything and said that they could not fault it. They felt like they were in a restaurant. The meal was delicious and beautifully prepared. They had soup to start followed by lamb shanks and then sticky toffee pudding for dessert. It was an added bonus that they could deliver beer and Prosecco as well. All faultless and very good value. There was even the added touch of an anniversary card in there for them. Sue and the Foxhunter staff helped to make the day very special and we are so grateful to them. We look forward to visiting the restaurant in person as soon as we are able to. Thank you to everyone at the Foxhunter.

Called in today for a late lunch. The lunch menu ir really good value - 2 courses for £11.95. Really good food and service - highly recommended. The drinks are also reasonably priced. Great quality country pub grub.

Sue was super helpful with my daughter’s multiple allergies. They’ve got lots of gluten free options and a gluten free fryer for chips etc. Sue told me long lists of ingredients etc for different things. She was also helpful with my vegan food. They had gluten/dairy/soy free sorbet for my daughters dessert (they also have vegan ice cream). My daughter was able to have a starter, main and dessert - not often she gets to have all 3 being gluten/dairy/soy free.

We are regulars to the lovely Foxhunter Inn and we know the food is always great - but decided to have our Christmas lunch there on a bit of a whim. We were not disappointed- extremely well organised from start to finish. It was busy but the food came out all on time, piping hot and super tasty (as always!) and we loved it! The staff were brilliant and really made us feel welcome and festive!! Had a super time. Also as an aside if you like fish and chips - this is THE place to come - just THE BEST! We are so lucky to have this amazing place on our doorstep.

I had been a few times before and food was quite good. Took my husband out for lunch, and were not impressed. My fish wasnt cooked, and my husband had indian curry, but there was hardly any taste to it.

After checking on trip advisor for pubs near Abergavenny we visited this great pub in the middle of nowhere. Would not have found it without using trip advisor. So glad we found it. A lovely welcome by friendly staff and nothing was too much trouble menu was adequate with a couple if specials and the usual meal package of starter/main course or pudding. Food was delicious served hot.

We were staying a couple of miles away and decided to pop in for Sunday roast. Thankfully we had arrived just after 12 and they were able to find us a table despite not having booked.

Turned up without a booking for myself, my husband and 2 young children and we were seated straight away and had a lovely hot Sunday lunch. We had the Glamorgan sausages with Vegetarian Gravy and it was very tasty and so were the vegetables that accompanied it. We were asked a couple of times if everything was ok with the meals and if we wanted any extra gravy or sauces. Very impressed and will definitely visit the Foxhunter again.

Visited for Sunday Lunch on a beautiful day hoping for a beautiful lunch. Well it wasnt I dont normally review places but on this occasion I just had too. It was the blind leading the blind. Full pub on a bank holiday with 3 young girls serving. There were customers putting up hands missing dinners crumbling dry tasteless Turkey no stuffing no horseradish sauce no this no that and average gravy to sum it up it was awful we had a fair wait which I dont mind giving the weather and familys out for bank hols but it was definitely not worth the wait.

Not once we we asked how our meals were nor if we wanted any sauce etc. We had to leave meals to queue up at the bar. The steaks were not the best either.

Last minute booking for 26. Everyone enjoyed their meals. Good choice. Meaks were hot and served together, Flexible as offered coffee as an alternative for 'pudding'. Sauce would have been nice with chicken.

We shared 6 Vegetable dishes for lunch today, plus a pud, and every mouthful was sensational. The dishes were complex and delicious, and very satisfying. It is difficult to find good vegetarian food that I can’t cook equally well at home. These dishes really were better than anything I’ve cooked, and there was plenty of choice. Plenty of choice for carnivores too. The chefs really know how to squeeze the maximum flavour out of every ingredient. The celeriac dish was my favourite , but we couldn’t decide which was our second favourite plate of deliciousness. We’ll be back.

Took my sales team here for lunch, 10 of us in total. The food is incredible and you certainly won’t go hungry. Everyone at the pub is friendly and can’t do enough for you. Feels like a good old fashioned boozer set in an amazing position on the Wye. Everyone only had good things to say about the place. Steak is a specialty here. No hesitation in recommending the Rose and Crown. Thanks all who looked after us that day.

9 of us for dinner. Just as well we had booked as the place was rammed! No surprises why! We had a fantastic meal. I think we had the best waitress I've ever experienced and the landlord and his wife/partner put in a good shift as well and obviously the chefs. What amazed me most was I could see into the kitchen and there only appeared to be 2 people in there and I didn't hear a raised word all the time I was there! Anyway top marks Hall Inn, we all loved the experience. My wife and I live in York and we will be definately coming back when we next visit.

Lovely Irish landlady was extremely accommodating to me & my two boys.. Service was how service used to be before the big pub chains took over everything… Food was brilliant.. Had to have the bread pudding as haven’t had it since I was a kid.. took me right back! Definitely recommend and will return 👌🏼
