The Fox Patching Inn in Worthing

We had to wait over half an hour for our food to be delivered to the table. Other customers were served before us even though they arrived sometime after us. When the food did arrive it was nothing to rave about.

What's the matter with these people who run it, bad attitude didn't eat as didn't want to stay any longer food didn't look that nice sorry to say we did ask in the town about the fox its it worth a look they all seemed very negative but we went anyway will not go again

Lovely staff and so friendly we went for lunch sat outside with the dogs and the food and drinks were amazing. So lucky to find such a peaceful pub

Great welcome by friendly staff.....given plenty of time to view menu in garden.....I ordered a burger and fries with coleslaw .....my fellow diners went for cheese dishes...they were ok but the burger was shockingly bad ....thrashed to death, could not have been home made, served in an uninspiring bun. The chips and coleslaw were ok but this plate lacked any love in its presentation or quality....as for value for money it fell way short of being acceptable . Given the delightful location it's a great shame the venue was very sadly unable to deliver on the food offering . Very unlikely to return until the catering side of the house improves substantially. It always pains me to write negative reviews but in this day and age customers look for and expect so much better.

Last time we ate at the Fox a few years ago it was excellent food and cosy country pub atmosphere. This time I think it was one of the worst pub dining experiences I've had. The decor is shabby, plain damp walls, peeling wallpaper, dirty windows. It was like sitting in a canteen inside a playground. I have never dined somewhere so noisy, parents shouting over their shrieking kids, other diners shouting to have a conversation, waiting staff shouting over the top of all that. It was bedlam, I'm not noise sensitive but it was actually uncomfortable. Our Sunday roasts arrived really quickly after ordering. Edible but roasties hard and dry, pork like from a frozen TV dinner, veg ok, not enough gravy. Crackling was like a thin piece of leather, not worth serving. Chicken ok one end, dry the other. Are what we could as fast as possible and got out of there. No-one asked how our meal was, I would have told them. Staff were fine tho. Never going back.

We were really looking forward to having a meal here as a family, as we used to come here as a couple a few years ago and remembered how child friendly it was and how good the food used to be. Unfortunately we were disappointed on so many levels. Although the garden still has a play area, the rest of the gardens are largely looking like a rubbish dump - literally, huge mounds of rubbish everywhere. Non the less the children still enjoyed playing and the drinks were ok. But then when it came to the meal this is where it went even further downhill. The food was not all brought out together. The children’s meals were edible and they were blissfully unaware, but it’s hard to get cheap frozen food wrong and fortunately our children aren’t fussy. Our meals were however were both completely inedible. My wife’s salmon was ridiculously overcooked, so much so that I suspect it was in fact reheated. The steak, which was very expensive, was really tough as well as being overcooked (well done instead of medium rare) and just too chewy to be able to enjoy, it was cooked terribly.

Lovely country pub, excellent friendly service and good honest food. Had the Lamb Burger (with goats cheese) last night and I have to say it was probably the best burger I have ever eaten...delicious!

We had a great meal at the Fox whilst camping nearby this weekend. We were particularly impressed by the friendly service and how the food order came out quickly, all together, correct, hot and lovely despite there being 14 of us. The beer garden was really pleasant and had plenty of space for the kids to run around. The menu was extensive and had a few unusual dishes in addition to the standard pub grub expected. They could’ve catered better for people requiring gluten free options but we got by. Overall we had a very good experience.

As we hadn’t been for a meal to the Fox at Patching for a few years we decided to book for lunch with some friends to see how it had changed since changing hands some time ago. We booked a table and on arrival at the bar were shown to our table and given the menus. My wife and I were quite impressed on the refurbishment since we last visited especially with new decorations and tables/chairs including now mats with a fox printed on them. The menu was acceptable but didn’t seem as lo9ng as previous. Three of us chose the Cod & Chips, the other person having the ploughmans selection which she assumed would be a selection of the three cheeses and ham as a separate menu option. It took quite sometime for the food to be served (at least 30 mins) although the indoors restaurant was not over busy but as it was a nice day quite a few patrons were sat outside. The fish & chips were served with french fries and not chips as advertised on the menu. I don’t think this was acceptable as the traditional dish is with chips not the cheaper smaller version of french fries. If french fries were with the fish it should have been stated on the menu but I expect that french fries were thought to be ok as this was the option with other items on the menu. One could almost say to serve fish & chips with french fries broke trading standards regs! The ploughmans was served with 2 cheeses (the 3rd cheese our friend did not want-stilton) but with no ham. Otherwise the meals were ok and reasonably plentiful. After finishing our meals and the plates were collected our friend mentioned there was no ham with the ploughmans and was told they had run out (no advice about this when the item was chosen). We waited to be asked if we wanted to see the desserts menu but no waiter came and asked us so after about 10-15 mins we had to ask. Three of us chose the crumble with custard but when served one of portions was not very hot and had less custard than the other 2 portions served. The bill was given to us and we said to the waiter about the ploghmans not having ham nor being told on ordering the dish and he apologised but offered no reduction on our bill (nor did we ask). We only left a minimum tip. We thought the service at the Fox was poor with only 2 young chaps appearing to be serving customers/serving at the bar with limited supervision but the toilets were very clean and clearly had been refurbished. In summary we were disappointed compared to our previous visits to the Fox some time ago but there are better pubs/restaurants we know of locally that we would visit for lunch so are unlikely to visit the Fox again.

The whole experience was very disappointing .treating a friend for lunch , even though they were not very busy waited over an hour for food to come , very expensive for what it was . My friend had the chicken and bacon salad which was just whole lettuce leaves put in a bowl a spoon of coleslaw a few slices of cucumber and tomato was meant to have avocado but didn’t have any I went for a fish meal with a choice of potatoes but the choice wasn’t available. The garden were unkept and the picnic benches we sat on falling to bits . This used to be one of my favourite pubs sadly run down now and not cared for , sadly wont be able to recommend this pub to my customers anymore .

We enjoyed a lovely lunch which well presented and served by helpful staff. We will certainly be going back soon.

We were driving through the area and decided to stop off for Sunday lunch. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Food was great (one roast beef, one vegetarian roast), plentiful and good value. Excellent nut roast - full of good things and less heavy than most. Had both wanted a dessert but were too full. Staff were good. Would love to return.

Again this restaurant hits the right spot! Service - always with a smile. Food - nicely presented, a side order of peas "no trouble" my Salmon did not have any accompanying vegetables. Seating - outside "we'll get more umbrellas out if there are no tables in the shade of the trees!"

Great pub for a quick stop with the kids. Lovely big garden with loads of seating. I had a pint and the staff were happy to serve us drinks and ice creams. I’ll be back.

What a disappointment. We have eaten at the Fox on several previous occasions and always thoroughly enjoyed our meals. Today was a complete letdown. After waiting over an hour our main courses arrived- Sunday lunches and kids’ meals. Two of our group had roast beef - it was barely edible- tough and chewy; two had roast pork which they said was ok - but no crackling!!!! The two nut roasts were rated best. Each plate had roast potatoes, which were satisfactory and a Yorkshire pudding which was over cooked eand too crunchy! We were in the process of deciding on desserts when we were told that there would be another long wait, so we paid up and left!! In fairness to the clearly stressed and apologetic senior member of staff who served us, our bill was adjusted to allow for the poor quality beef and delay. (Nearly two and a half hours for one course and a couple of drinks!) We will probably give the Fox another try in the future but definitely not for a Sunday lunch!

Table booked in advance for lunch on 03/09/23 but suffered an hour and 3/4 wait for food. Our Grand daughter left in tears with her Dad 20 minutes before the food eventually arrived due to boredom and hunger. After waiting for over an hour we enquired why the wait, only to be told the garden service was busy and ours would be 10 minutes (surely pre-booked restaurant tables take priorty over walk-in garden ones). Half an hour later our remaining 3 roasts appeared with over cooked meat and under cooked potaotos, which were sent back. Needless to say, after 2 hours no Sunday lunch. Thank God for The Henty.

Well if I had looked at the negative reviews I may have thought about coming to this pub again but hey I then thought about the people that only like to post negative things and went with my gut! We came to this lovely pub with great staff that were happy to be busy ( actually so busy I didn’t see them stop!) my decision confirmed that they are a good pub with home made food that was not served from a microwave, yes there was a wait but considering the pub, restaurant and garden was full of people we were happy to wait for a great meal that arrived at our table. Chicken Medallions, dauphinois potatoes (they are the best) , lamb shank with a yummy gravy and a kids burger baked bean’s served in a pot on the side (happy child) it was all great on hot plates Keep up the good work! An independent pub that has a great setting with a kids meal park, open garden to play ball games lots of tables We will be back soon

We had a really lovely meal here tonight, the sea bass and the chicken medallions were delicious and the dauphinois potatoes were amazing. The chocolate brownie was not exactly a brownie, more of a cake but it was still lovely. All the staff were so friendly and attentive. I’d agree with the other reviews about the pub being a bit dated but it’s still cosy and the food and service make up for it. We were made so welcome and the food was amazing.
