The Fox Inn in York

unassuming local pub with excellent food & very friendly people. Very reasonable prices & decent portions as well. We were in a caravan park a mile up the road & went midweek for dinner. No hesitation in recommending this one and we will be returning on our next trip.

We had a lovely Sunday dinner at the fox, we both had the beef, very generous portion of meat and vegetables, I had apple crumble and my friend had brownie and cream, absolutely gorgeous food. Service from staff was very good, friendly and attentive. We moved from the restaurant area and into the bar as the table was needed for another sitting. The only negative to our visit was being made to feel abit uncomfortable when regular visitors to the pub made it quite obvious we were sitting in "their seats"as they came in remarking their was nowhere to sit and they " wouldn't get a seat".We also live in the village and its one of the reasons I don't go in very often, visitors to the village beware😆. Don't let this put you off though as it's a lovely village pub with a cosy feel and lovely staff and lovely food too.

This country pub as the perfect balance between a lovely place to have a drink and the perfect pub grub but to start this review I must say thank you to the landlord who along with the regulars made me and my wife feel so welcome the choice of drinks was a good selection but then we have to mention the FOOD in capitals because the quality and taste were above what we both expected so thank you to the chef and the waiting staff we had a great experience and will definitely go back and would definitely recommend who ever reads this review to go and try this place so to finish a simple couple of words THANK YOU

Found this gem of a pub in our way home from Whitby today, great value for money and the best Sunday roast we have all had in a long time. Absolutely delicious. The staff were great too, lovely bunch, just a shame we don't live closer or this would be our new local 5 star from us.

A group of 16 went for Sunday lunch and couldn’t fault it. Hot food , gluten free no problem, vegetarian no problem. Well priced we will be going back. Great welcome from the landlord and good service.

Fantastic Sunday Lunch in a really warm and friendly environment. Dogs are welcome too! We stopped off on the way to visit York and found this little gem. We didn’t have our dog with us this time, but noticed the “dogs welcome” signs. However we did have our 2 boys (aged 13 and 10) and they were made very welcome too. The staff are all fab and can’t do enough to help, the food was superb. We only wish we lived closer!

Went to the Fox on a Friday evening as I was staying in the area and wanted a decent meal and a place to watch the Rugby World Cup. I rang ahead and asked if the rugby was on and if they could accommodate me for a meal. Rich, the landlord could not have been more helpful reserving me a table where I could clearly also watch the rugby without having to move. The hospitality was warm and welcoming from the moment I stepped through the door. The local beer was excellent and the food was simple honest pub grub well cooked, and delicious. There was a buzz about the place and a great atmosphere that you only get from a proper English local (hard to find these days) as people came and went throughout the evening. A great evening out that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone visiting or staying in the area.

Very disappointed with our Sunday lunch. Worst roast I have ever had . Pork tough . Beans hard and stringy. Staff were friendly. Food very dissatisfying.

We visited the Fox Inn on the recommendation of the receptionist of the hotel we were staying at. We were welcomed by the landlord, who was friendly and helpful. The food here was excellent, so much so that we visited for dinner for the following two evenings as well. We strongly recommend this Inn for its welcome, the food and very reasonable prices. You will not be disappointed!

Went for food with a party of 14 including children. Food was great, staff were very friendly and accommodating. Would go again. My 4 year old asked to go back again as we were leaving.

I very rarely leave reviews for places we’ve stayed but this one deserves a mention. Absolutely great hospitality from the moment we arrived to the time we left. Stayed 2 nights whilst visiting York Racecourse and have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone. Room was very comfortable and nothing was too much trouble…a lovely Yorkshire welcome and would most certainly stay here again. Ps the sirloin steak was one of the best I’ve tasted in years……compliments to the chef!

We spent 2 nights in York and both nights we came to the fox inn for food because it was so amazing! The food is unreal! The chips are the best chips ever! The deserts are amazing and portions are massive! Richard is so friendly and fun! He’s so welcoming to new people and the staff are very polite and smiley. Beautiful place! We will be back!

Catered for a large family gathering for Sunday lunch, and the landlord was really welcoming and obliging. The food was great and very good value. All homemade puddings too. Would definitely visit again.

On our recent trip to Yorkshire, my wife and I were hunting around for somewhere to eat after a long day seeing the sights of York etc. We had been extremely disappointed by some of the so called ‘recommended’ eateries in the area and so thought we’d look a bit further afield. Stumbling on The Fox Inn; we decided to take the 15 minute drive to the lovely Stockton On The Forest and give it a try. Plenty of parking and a warm welcome from staff, we took our table. A true village pub with all the usual artefacts such as fishing rods on the wall; we warmed to this place instantly. The pub was quite busy with the ‘pint on the way home from work’ people and apart from the loud mouth ‘effing and jeffing’ at the bar giving his opinion for everyone’s benefit (every pub has one it seems); the atmosphere was very good. I had to go and ask if someone could take our order; due to it being busy in the pub; but not to be seen as a negative, I was met with a sincere apology and the Chef came out to take our order and recommend what was good on the menu. My wife ordered the Cesar Salad main dish and seeing one of my favourites (pork chop) on the menu, I ordered in great expectation. The beer was superb: the Old Forge bitter was to die for…well managed ale with a fantastic taste. This again was on the recommendation of the Chef About 15-20 minutes had passed when the Chef came out and apologised for the delay, advising that the pork chop was so big that it was taking time to cook on the grill and that I would not be disappointed And how true that was: my wife’s Cesar Salad was a ‘proper’ and authentic one with the right ingredients and dressings (so many places put their own ‘twist’ on this dish) and she thoroughly enjoyed it Now, as for the pork chop: WOW!! It was over an inch thick and enormous; had crispy crackling rind and serves with a very tasty chorizo, pineapple and chilli salsa with homemade ‘skins on’ chips…this was stunning and so tasty; I’d go as far as to say that this was the very best pork chop I’ve ever tasted. Finding this pub / restaurant (it’s a hotel too apparently) was one of the highlights of our holiday from a culinary aspect and there is no doubt that we would eat there again should we visit. Price point was ridiculously reasonable: including drinks, just over £35!! Total value for money and excellent food Please give this place a try: you will not be disappointed

We ate Sunday lunch at the Fox and absolutely loved it. First and foremost we were met with a warm welcome. Service was very friendly and they went above and beyond to help us and our dog (who was most welcome when kept on a lead and off the furniture). Food was lovely, good sized portions, roasting hot and plenty of gravy (nothing worse than a roast dinner which lacks enough gravy). It was also very good value. Under new ownership who are making a real go of it, would definitely recommend.

Pensé que probaríamos este lugar ya que es conveniente a donde viajamos. Cuando entramos fue en gran medida un ambiente de pub local, pero el comedor parecía agradable y nuestra comida principal era encantadora. El servicio fue lento. Les tomó un tiempo tomar nuestro pedido y que llegara la comida. Una vez que habíamos terminado de comer, no había ninguna señal de que la camarera tomara nuestro pedido de postres, así que le pregunté al barman. Su respuesta una vez que "La cocina se ha cerrado y el chef termina a las 9 en punto". Estábamos bastante sorprendidos pero también enojados y decepcionados al sentirnos abandonados. Nadie nos advirtió de esto cuando llegamos o nos pidió que reserváramos para un momento anterior. Muy mal servicio al cliente y no volveremos.

Our visit to the Fox involved slow service, and really mediocre food. The meat pies had hardly any meat in them, the burgers were dry, and the vegetable lasagne didn't appear to have any actual lasagne in it though we didn't get all the way to the bottom. Unfortunately the price didn't reflect the low standard of the food we were served.

We had kids chicken goujons, lasagne & gammon chips & veg the staff were warm & friendly. We really enjoyed he food and the atmosphere give by the local regulars chatting at the bar. Highly recommend

Went here with friends for food i had beef pie it shud have been called carrot pie i payed 13 pound for this very disappointed my wife had lasangne it was not the best she left most of it. the price was too hight for what we had the place has no atmosphere and we had a long wate there are better places to spend your hard earned money

We were for fortunate to be staying near this little pub and had our dinner there for 2nights. Staff are friendly, pub has great atmosphere. Meals can be eaten in several areas although there is a dining room if a formal setting is preferred. They do nightly specials, and meals are more than ample.

Service was slow, brought us the wrong meals twice, we had a beef and lamb roast. Could tell it had been reheated. Then tried to charge us for a much larger meal than we actually had. Won’t go there again.

This is our local but as we don’t drink we only go when friends visit. We went on a Thursday which happened to be when they have a fish and chip special. Three of us had that which was very nice. Nicely cooked fish and chunky chips. One of us is veggie so had the vegetarian lasagne. It’s the only vegetarian dish and was a real let down. A strange mix of vegetables with congealed pasta sheets and unappealing cheese. Seemed like it had been made a while before and reheated.

We visited this pub on the 13th February there was 60/70 people they provided an excellent buffet fresh food n gorgeous cooked meat honestly can’t thank the staff enough Lisa and Arron were absolutely brilliant their service was excellent and we will definitely be back with any excuse possible massive thanks guys xx

Very friendly pub Lisa and Arron very good hosts. Only downfall it was continental breakfast not full English. Only 3 rooms in pub and very steep stairs so no good if have difficulty walking. Room very clean and tidy plenty free rea and coffee. Bus stop into York right outside pub £4 return or use OAP bus pass. Located in lovely quite village the locals are very friendly.

Stayed here for the weekend on New Years Eve and could not fault it. Wonderful greeting from Lisa who made us feel welcome throughout our stay. I want to really recommend a visit to The Fox Inn, the food was excellent and served in a cosy atmosphere. My daughter and myself could not fault the friendly and welcoming service. The staff were attentive, polite and made us welcome, it made my weekend break.

What a disappointment we booked a table for six last Friday evening all went well until the extremely long wait for the food, when it eventuatually came half of it was missing. My friend ordered fish and chips, pretty basic you would think, the fish came which in fairness was cooked well but by a he time the chips came 15 mins later it was stone cold. Potatoes that should have come with one meal came after the main was eaten as my friend got tired of waiting and the whole service was piecemeal with parts of the meals either forgotten of late so for example sizzling fajitas were not sizzling by the time the side of chips arrived. I don't like to write bad things about restaraunt and I am only doing this so that maybe they will improve what was a shambolic service, the food was okay but spoilt by lack of professionalism in the service.

Tan decepcionado - sentado en el restaurante de la barra de desayuno con una corriente fría proveniente del camino puerta detrás, así que pedimos que nos cambiaran a la zona del bar, que no era mucho mejor. Los cuatro principales campos ordenados eran sosa, se centra en grandes platos de comida más que sabor. Pastel de carne con cerveza que top pastelería sin cocer y sin sabor, verduras era simplemente aguado guisantes y zanahorias. Otros dos platos principales también le faltaba sabor. El vino era barato y desagradable.

Realmente recomendaría alojarse aquí. Mi marido y yo nos alojamos el fin de semana y nos trataron con una cálida bienvenida, buena comida y encantadora habitación moderna y cómoda. No sólo puede que te da ganas de personal amable y servicial, nos hicieron sentir muy bienvenidos por el pub asiduos también. La ubicación es ideal para viajes a Nueva York y Scarborough.

Habiendo comido aquí el sábado con el menú principal y el domingo con el menú de almuerzo del domingo, puedo decir que la calidad de la comida persistió durante toda. El servicio de Lisa siempre es perfecto y muy servicial, como el resto del equipo. El filete que tenía tbone fue uno de los mejores que he comido en mucho tiempo, perfectamente preparado.

This was a local pub from our hotel. The menu was interesting and reasonably priced. On a Monday it wasn't very busy, so we got a nice table. The pie was well filled and tasty, the cheesecake was rich.

Recommended by the B&B where we stayed and was within walking distance. We dropped in late afternoon and had a pint, while scoping out the menu. Looked promising, so we reserved for 8:00 that evening. Our table was waiting and service was very prompt. My son (famous for beef burgers) ordered something else for once, but they had run out, so he reverted. I ordered duck breast from the specials menu, which was very nice. My meal included enough vegetables (carrots and peas) to serve all four of us and my son's chips would have fed six. We took leftovers with us and had them for dinner the next evening. We were all pleased and felt it was good value for the money.

Found on Google maps by accident. My dad was staying at the caravan and camping club near by.Decided to read reviews which were positive. I pre-booked a table over the phone.Arrived at the inn and was greeted by a friendly lady behind the bar. She asked if we wanted to be seated in the dinning area or bar area. We choice the bar area because it seemed to have a better atmosphere. With other people been sat in there.The lady came and took our orders of game pie steak pie and chicken fajitas.The only downside to our meal was the waiting of the meals to actually come. Which was a good three quarters of a hour. It seemed as if she was the only one working plus the chef.When the food finally arrived it was piping hot and you could tell it was all home made. Everyone enjoyed.

The food was excellent, all home cooked and the veggie lasagne was very nice, my husband and parents had beef, pork and turkey and all said how nice it was, the vegetables to accompany our meals were plentiful and fresh, those of us who found room for puds enjoyed a very nice cheesecake from the choices on offer. All in all a very enjoyable meal, the staff were attentive and really looked after us. We will definately return if we are ever in the area again. The locals are lucky to have such a nice pub, reasonably priced meals. Recommended.

Lovely cosy dog friendly pub! food was excellent , proper chunky steak pie and fairly priced all cooked fresh to order will absolutely be going back next time I'm in the area :) *****
