Booked 8 rooms on booking.com for a family wedding and was meant to come with breakfast included, however once paid for the room on site we were informed that breakfast is not included and had to be paid and to take it up with booking.com, booking.com said they emailed and no reply and they couldn’t refund us as we paid the fox inn directly. They were closed on the Monday (every Monday is closed) so the bed sheets and towels were not replaced Monday so had no clean towels for Monday night/Tuesday. Feel very disappointed and annoyed as a full English breakfast was about £15 so for 2 days for 2 people is £60 on top of the room. To get no reply is poor and overall a bad experience and would not recommend.

For the first time I visited the fox after the refurbishment I found it very light and pleasantly to look at, but one goes to a restaurant for the food and not the decor. The food was obviously bought in ready made and therefore didn’t need a chef to cook It I was very disappointed with the food, the chips were probably oven cooked as they were hard and not very hot , my sons fish the batter was over cooked and with a very small portion of chips. The apple strudel should have had light flaky pastry not all soggy, probably heated in a microwave . I would have been quite happy to have paid a lot more for a delicious meal produced my a chef, a meal that you would not have made at home, so I’m sorry to say I will not be going there again or recommending it to anyone

We are local residents and dropped in today, at the newly refurbished Fox Inn, for a sunny Sunday lunch, the food was delicious and we enjoyed some quality wine, with some jazz sounds in the background all served by their attentive and charming staff. The landlord and his family were on hand taking an interest, altogether a good experience, we will be back

What a lovely place to stay. We were visiting relatives and came across The Fox Inn. The hosts were very welcoming and the staff were friendly . We decided to have an evening meal and it didn’t disappoint. The breakfast was wonderful. Lovely location and although the owners only took over in May it was great to see the changes they have made already. The room we stayed in was spacious and had everything we needed and we would definitely stay again

Stopped off at the Fox for lunch and refreshments during a walk through the beautiful local countryside. The pub has been refurbished but retains a decent charm. Plentiful outside seating in an idyllic setting perfect for a summer’s day. Good quality fish and chips was enjoyed, and my friend rated the halloumi burger. Decent and efficient service from the staff.

Smashing Pub attached to a small Hotel - with a great & varied menu. Sunday roasts were well presented, generous portions & tasty! Service was great. Everything was done with a smile & friendly local banter that made the visit a pleasure. We really enjoyed eating in the outside garden space today while the weather was so good. Well worth visiting & taking the opportunity to walk around this lovely little 400 year old village.

The Fox Inn is a lovely pub that also has separate accommodation to the rear of the premises in the form of wooden “chalet” type buildings. We stayed there for our nephews wedding at Down Hall, we stayed two nights, as did 7 other members of our family. The rooms are modern and very comfortable. Queen size bed which was very comfortable, bathroom, very clean as were the towels and in the family room, a pull out sofa. We also had THE smallest TV which was frustrating when relaxing and trying to watching the Olympics between drinks, meals and walks, but no big deal. The owners are new and were very friendly as were the rest of the staff. We had lunch snacks which were lovely and were generous portions. The beer garden was really nice and relaxing. It was a beautiful, sunny hot day, so atmosphere was perfect. The evening meal was really nice, i had steak pie and my only moan was that the pastry was puff which broke up into nothing so was like eating air, would have preferred short crust but thats a personal preference. The meat inside was delicious as was the gravy! Everything about our stay was lovely with a few exceptions. Firstly, no one seemed to be expecting us for breakfast at 8.30am. Due to the wedding, we were on a time frame but breakfast ended up taking over an hour and half as only one member of staff was on duty for some of the time we were there so we were pressed for time for getting ready once finished. The price of the orange juice was crazy, £2.70 for a small glass. Most places now do re fill coffee and tea and it would be a good idea for the Fox to think about that as, by the time you get your breakfast your coffee is either cold or already drunk. On the first morning i ordered the Pancakes but they were tasteless and, not hard but very firm, i couldn’t eat them and to try and get something else would have made us even later, so i left it. The main confusion and annoyance for all of us was the “breakfast included” which was suppose to be a Porridge Pot, Muffin and i think a drink but it had been discontinued by the new owners without telling guests. When we booked and then two days before we stayed we had confirmation stating the included breakfast. The breakfast times etc also differ from the confirmation email, so the new owners need to delete and update the website and their emails. It’s usually the small things that annoy people and these can be rectified easily. I would recommend The Fox Inn as a lovely place to stay. The area is lovely with lots to do x

You know what is like when your wife throws your old favourite jumper away and buys you a new one, the new one is very nice but it doesn't quite feel the same. Well that was how I felt after visiting the Fox. The pub is under new management and has been completely refurbished and a good job they have made of it as well but for me it is little too clinical. Much remains the same and the menu has been refreshed but still similar. The food was good but I felt the quantities have been parred back slightly. A good range of beers and wines available. Not sure I would just pop in for a pint but as a restaurant I would give it another go. I hope the new landlord will be given a chance here as too many independent pubs have been closed. If you are an old customer please give try it again. If you have never been before its is worth a visit.

I was a regular for years with the previous owners, so decided to try it with the new ones. The food was very good, ample size portions, and service was attentive. What disappointed me was the lack of atmosphere . Previously, it was a typical old pub, with furnishings in that style, and with many ornaments around the place. Now , with all the walls painted white and the chairs changed for new ones, it seems very clinical and definitely not cosy. Personally, I wont be returning, but only because of the lack of feeling. It’s a pity, but if atmosphere isnt so important to others, then I can recommend the food. Prices have increased condiderably in line with other places, but I’d still say the food was worth it.

What a great job on the refit, the garden is lovely. However , we ordered 2 ploughman, easy English classic, the dockers wife that came out shouting 51, for the food order, we did say we was not given a number, she made a point of saying the numbers on the table, 76..... The bread was lovely, the ham had that green stain to it, the cheese was sweatly the coleslaw was cheap and nasty. To top it off I ask for diet coke, not because I am on a diet but I have diabetes, it was normal coke, my bloods are now 26 and I am feeling sick. We did ask the man was I diet, oh yes. No it was not. I only had a little coke and then ordered bottles of diet coke. Its shame about your customer service a d food. Had a lovely meal last night for my 30th Birthday. But was disappointed that before we even ordered they gave us a list of food that wasn't available. This is meant to be a well known pub for decent meals, so it should have had everything available. Considering that I had booked this about 5-6 weeks ago, and wanted to try somewhere different. Stayed for 2 nights in June when in the area. We really enjoyed our evening meal in the pub, but were slightly disappointed with the chalet accommodation, which appeared fairly basic for the price. Bathroom was fine but a few gripes in the bedroom such as no bedside tables nor bedside lamps. Breakfast was provided in the room but very minimal, being a carton of instant porridge, stodgy muffin and snack bar. If the review had been based on our meal in the pub alone it would have merited 4* but not including the accommodation.

Stayed here in the chalet rooms behind the pub, for 2 nights. Ate dinner one night and cooked breakfast the morning afterwards. Everything was really good quality. The menu is very traditional English pub food and it is done very well. Cooked breakfast was excellent. Best of all the room was very clean and comfortable no frills accommodation with a large bathroom. Staff were were friendly and couldn't be helpful enough. Only minor grumble (well 2 actually) is that the fridge in the room has got to be the noisiest I have ever heard, and the emergency light in the middle of the room ceiling is a little on the bright side for sleeping. Anyway 2 good nights sleep were had and I would recommend this pub in the pretty little village of Matching Tye to any friend to stay for a night or 2 or a meal.

Our meal took an hour to arrive. I ordered a curry and my husband a mixed grill costing £25. When I asked the reason for the delay I was met with an aggressive attitude from the barmaid saying that everything is freshly prepared hence the delay and no sign of an apology. I did wonder how it took 1 hour to cook a mixed grill which was over-cooked and dry and a Chicken Tikka Masala which was a weird mix of fruit and again dry chicken. I would have sent it back but was ravenous and didn’t want to face the wrath of the barmaid. If we didn’t go to the quiz every month I wouldn’t be going back to the Fox unfortunately as it is a lovely old pub.

I took a couple of friends to the Fox last week. They had fish and chips, I had Thai curry. Fish was an optional extra at £7.50. Small portion of rice and sauce, half a tablespoon of white fish, a few green beans and mange tout. It was quite nice but the portion size would have left my 6 year old hungry! Having lived in Harlow for 10 years when we came back for a weekend to catch-up with friends, we stayed here. Only a few miles outside of Harlow it is tranquil and you really do feel like you are deep in the heart of the country. This place was always popular so we knew to book a table for meals well in advance. Our room was great. Plenty of room and had a fridge and air con. WiFi was OK but we suspect some of the connectivity issues we had were down to a recent cable theft in the village. A “ breakfast bag” was provided in the room with porridge pots, muffins, snack bars, orange juice and fresh milk- a really thoughtful extra touch that marks this out as a good place to stay. You can have full breakfast in the pub pre booked the night before. We had all our meals here and loved the food. Top notch pub grub, beautifully cooked and probably over generous portions. All served by really friendly staff.Couldn’t fault it in any way

We arrived an hour early for our booking and felt lucky to be told our table was already prepared for us if we would like to sit there. Result, we thought, unfortunately it took 25 minutes before getting menus, and this was after me going to the bar to remind them we were still waiting. We ordered our roasts but these took a further 40 minutes to arrive. Apart from this though the food was plentiful and very nice. Admittedly they did have a large group of people in the back room which appeared to be taking the attention of all the staff at the expense of other diners getting agitated at the extremely long waiting times. We did consider beforehand that we may order desserts, but decided against it due to the time our meal took to arrive. Would we go again, sadly not, which is a shame because the pub itself is lovely and the staff are friendly and courteous.

Service rather slow, not from the waitress but the kitchen took a long time to prepare the food even though it was a quiet day, but it was a very good meal and great value for money. I had the beef and ale pie, pastry could have been thicker but never had so much meat in a pie before. It was really tasty, tender and full of flavour. Our other meals were liver and bacon, ham and eggs and grilled chicken breast. All parties said their food was very good. I had a delicious wild mushroom risotto and a plum tart and coffee for £8.95. We liked the flavour of the pie but would have preferred it to be a piece cut from a pie and not top and bottomed with the filling.Very friendly service and we will return.

This is such a lovely, friendly pub and the staff are always so welcoming and friendly. Food is decent pub grub but the people in there really make it. We enjoyed pie and chips, plus sticky toffee pud. It isn't gourmet but is fresh, well cooked, tasty and without a doubt we would return. Very dog friendly too!

The orders were taken swiftly .but we had a bit of a wait for the food to arrive but the pub was busy and ours was a big order. When the food arrive the portions were big. The food itself was great very tasty and you could tell, freshly cooked and not bought in.the food came all at one time so no one waited to be eating .very impressed.i would thoroughly recommend this pub great food good prices fantastic staff.

My first visit to the Fox. Its lovely inside, and I went there with friends. The menu is a classic pub menu, with lots of choice for everyone. I ordered the Chicken Curry which came with rice and a poppadum. The curry was lovely, very tasty but I thought the amount of Chicken curry that was on my plate was quite small and disappointing. The deserts were lovely, as was the real ales. I also noticed that when the meals were given to us, the plates were nearly dropped onto our table in front of us. I know that the staff had obviously been very busy but it really was noticeable by all of us!.....

Went for a drink and a meal during the Belgium v Japan match after work. The pub area was a typical low ceiling, sticky carpet affair with a medium sized garden area. We had steak at £20 served with chips and onion rings and £15 for fish and chips and mushy peas. It filled up the tummy as they say but nothing much to talk about. Is it value for money? I think not.

This is a lovely place to stay, the rooms are all in a modern block behind the main pub and the rooms are very nice and modern. My room had a large workspace area and a fridge and an AC unit. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom very spacious with plenty of hot water. The fridge contains fresh milk, orange an water but has plenty of room for anything you want to add. The WIFI is very good and I was able to work and listen to music at the same time.

After wanting a sunday lunch on the way home from Norwich, we first stopped at a pub advertised on the side of the road - one of thise 'big' sign pubs but unfortunately our two dogs were not welcome. We travelled a little further and came acrss the Fox Inn. Not only were we welcomed but also the dogs but the best was the absolutely superb Sunday lunch!! Well cooked, fresh and copious amounts! So much so our dogs enjoyed the meat which we couldnt squash in! Friendly and welcoming. Will be making it a regular on our trips home. THank you staff at Fox Inn.

Lovely lunch today, even though we arrived quite late the staff couldn't be more inviting. Free pudding...free coffee...very decent-sized portions. Can't remember the name of the draught cider but that was excellent too - not too sweet or dry. We visited here a few months ago and it was just as good as last time. Not far from Harlow. As I say, great value for money, excellent service, friendly. We will be visiting again soon!

Freshwater offer lavish and huge, tasty portions of freshly made food at a very reasonable price. My wife's first instinct that day was to go to MacDonalds but the quality of food and value for money at Freshwaters was way beyond what we would have had there. Freshwater serve you a proper meal.

Fantastic day at the Kings Head in Ongar. Staff were absolutely amazing and the food was incredible, lovely pizzas and roasts on a Sunday. We had our own private room due to the size of our booking but the staff were extremely accommodating making sure we always had everything we needed

Nice quiet space and a good variety of pastries, toasties abd great variety of hot drinks, frappes, iced lattes, smoothies. I ordered the pistachio and salted caramel frappe with whipped cream on top. It was sweet enough for me so asked for a bit more syrup and they did. Very nice.

Started with a couple of really good real ales - Directors I believe! Not had a pint that good for ages - most landlord have no idea about real ale and concentrate on selling chemicals! Progressed to multiple starters like we usually do and all were very good not greasy like some deep fried starters you get elsewhere - prawn satay was excellent! Its a nice little restaurant and the service was lovely! Then instead of sticking to lots of starters as normal we decided to go for main course - we shared a crab rice but I ordered the seafood curry which whilst a very nice seafood stew didnt seem to have any Thai spices or flavours in it and not really a curry - bit disappointing really - should have stuck to the starters!! Will probably go back and keep to the starters Reasonable price - difficult to get a phone signal to order a cab home!
