Food excellent. Good choice of beers. Above all, the staff were attentive, friendly and helpful. Highly recommended. Also, a beautiful garden next to the river - simply perfect location.

Location is great, its a shame the weather was so rubbish (rain) so we couldnt sit outside by the river. Food unfortunately also a let down. I had the fish and chips and my children had the kids fish and chips and the fish finger sandwich. All three extremely greasy, so much so we were all feeling very poorly by the evening.

We booked for three days, the morning of the first day we were told there was a problem with a leak in the room. We.could smell something like sewage. However they made an effort to find an alternative. The landlord would not come to speak to us and would only communicate through the Assistance Manager who was so-embarrassed. However we found a place The 5Alls @ Filkins. There was no apologies, they took £20 off the one night which was£80. I would add I have tried to communicate with them but to no avail. My friend and I are in our 80.

Really disappointed with this pub and the food they offer gluten free or maybe I should say lack of it! Firstly we went to the restaurant which was empty apart from one other couple but they still sat us right by the side of them! We wanted a roast dinner, because I'm gf could not have the yorksire pud, then wanted cauli cheese (extra £5) which also was not gf. It really is not that difficult to make a decent gf cauli cheese. It came with no substitute for my lack of yorkshire, half a carrot, green cabbage red cabbage and 1 slice of beef! We will not be returning.

Stayed one night as a half way point on my way to work. The room was very clean and had everything needed. Tv was loaded with Netflix which was a bonus for me and the staff were very nice. Warm rooms, great shower which had lots of power and also very warm. Morning breakfast cooked fresh and was amazing. My only 2 minor issues were…. WIFI was poor which might not be an issue for everyone and my room was under the front door and it was a bit annoying people coming and going and talking outside late at night. Apart for that it was great.

We stayed at The Fox Inn for two nights. Ate breakfast both mornings and it was vey good. Also ate dinner in the pub one night and it was good. The inn is owned by the same folks that own The Angel in Burford and share the chef. The service was a little on the slow side but figured it was just to short staff as they were not chatty with the customers like some of the other places on our 25 days vacation.

Local-ish residents. Eat out regularly in various gastro pubs around Burford and beyond. Setting is really good, refurb is good. Food is decent but not stand out for the area. Biggest issue is the expense - I was really surprised that the lamb kebabs at £20 is definitely not worth it. 2 small kebabs on a pita with cold cous cous. That has put me off going back when there are other great options close by.

Me and my wife stayed here for 3 nights, Friday to Monday. We had the top room with the balcony overlooking the stream and fields. What a beautiful view we had. Our stay was so pleasant and relaxing. The bed was lovely and it was nice to wake up to the sounds of the countryside. All the staff were amazing, polite and helpful including 'P'. The food was outstanding, whether it was breakfast or dinner. Good selection of beers and local ales as well as the usual gins, vodkas and whiskeys. The surrounding grounds are also very lovely and well kept. Plenty of benches outdoors. They are also dog friendly which is good (our friends met us for the last night and they have a dog). Overall we had an amazing time. I'm writing this on my back home whilst also looking to see when we can come back!Thank you all for a wonderful stay. To anyone else looking, we would highly recommend The Fox Inn.

Just came back from 3 perfect nights here with my husband and I couldn't wait to leave a review.Firstly previous review about P* is an absolute malicious joke - P* was an amazing, friendly and professional senior member of staff - couldn't do enough for us and provided lots of spot on recommendations for us during our stay as did Tom - thank you guys. All staff here are a credit to the establishment and work so hard. The food is out of this world good, so much so we decided to have all our meals here for the duration of our stay - highly recommend the roast beef dinner, specials board pie of the day and the ice-cream which is freshly made on site. The breakfasts are to die for also and set you up for the day. Drinks are plentiful behind the bar and cocktails are a must, lovely little touches such as dog treats and water bowls for the travellers with furry companions. The grounds, rooms(we stayed in Upton with a balcony overlooking the stream and fields) and setting are picturesque. We are currently already planning a return - could say so many more positive things but check it out for yourself you will not be disappointed. 5* - first class.

My partner and I went for a short trip in the Cotswolds and decided to sleep and dine at the Fox Inn. BEST CHOICE we've taken so far during this trip lol. The place is cosy, clean and so beautiful. We stayed there for the weekend of 22/04 - 24/04.We stayed in the Upton room which was beyond our expectations. Good size bed, very comfortable, beautiful wallpaper, amazing bathroom with huge bathtub and an awesome shower head that made you feel you were having a shower in the rain. The jewel of this room for me was the bathroom: elegant, clean, it was nearly a spiritual experience. After soaking in the bathtub for a good amount of time, I decided to open the window while cooling down under the shower head and could smell the sun and fresh air from outside. My partner loved the terrace the room has! We enjoyed a lovely little breakfast with a cute view of the field and the cattle on our last day there. As per the restaurant, the food was impeccable. The BEST SOUFFLE I've had for years! And such good value. Both my partner and I are under 30 and were happy with the price for full menu course (including desert), 1 bottle of wine and drinks. Staff was friendly with us. The man who we thought could be the manager or head of the staff was very professional, respectful and friendly. We truly enjoyed our stay there and will definitely recommend to friends and family.

A beautifully refurbished inn set in what can only be described as idyllic surroundings. The new owners have done a fabulous job of refurbishing the building to a high standard. Everywhere you look is tastefully decorated & the Mulberry wallpapers are stunning.Sadly, our experience spiralled downwards from having the misfortune of dealing with a very over-confident, arrogant & quite frankly, patronising young woman whose name begins with the letter 'P'. I won't embarrass her further by disclosing her name here but she will know who she is. Apparently she is the manager (big mistake). We had the lunch menus shoved in front of us at the bar & it was quite obvious that P wanted us to make our choice within seconds, which we did, such was the pressure we felt from her unfriendly, rude manner. She didn't bother mentioning the specials on the board behind us which we ended up chosing so as not to take up anymore of P's time.We couldn't believe it when the 2 scampis arrived. £18 EACH for a bowl of scampi & a pot of tartare sauce!! No chips or peas in sight - just literally scampi in a bowl & tartare! We had to pay extra for one portion of chips which, incidentally, were forgotten initially & we had to remind the waitress that we'd paid for. So, what amounted to a bar meal plus 2 pints came to the grand total of a few pence short of £50!!! We felt robbed to say the least. How in the world can you justify charging £18 for a bowl of scampi plus sauce? Granted, the scampi was delicious - juicy & succulent - and the sauce was homemade but it was certainly NOT worth the money. There were about a dozen scampi in each bowl which, when you do the maths, is about £1.50 per nugget! Unbelievable. Still getying over the shock. The only reason we chose this meal was due to the pressure we felt in hurrying. Thank goodness for Tom, the wonderfully kind, warm & friendly assistant manager whose professionalism saved the day. We were given 2 free desserts which at least rectified the situation somewhat but in retrospect, we should have asked for some money back instead. However, it was a real act of kindness & one which P should learn from. Will we return? Probably not, unless prices are more realistic & P changes her ways/leaves the establishment. Will I recommend to others? Definitely not. There is nothing wrong in a confident, young person but when it becomes arrogance & unhelpful, time to cobsider a career change I think. The experience spoiled what was a beautiful spring day in a gorgeous location. I'm sorry to leave a negative review when clearly the owners have spent a fortune on doing a first-class job of renovating this lovely old pub. Thanks again to Tom, a true star - you should be the manager!

It is with great joy that I can tell readers that at last one of the Cotswolds most attractive pubs has been taken over by professional caterers. Words are difficult to find about how poor this place used to be.On to the new menu. The choice of light bar snacks is plentiful but the restaurant menu has something for everyone. There was an interesting vegi option plus a Burger, Fish and Chips, a Steak, a Pie of the day, Pork Fillet and a few more options. The whole meal was very good and the pie individually home made. The service from a young team was very friendly and made sure we were made welcome. The decor has been refreshed and the views from the restaurant are wonderful especially when having lunch or dinner with a loved one looking out over the picturesque valley. For a better idea of the food quality the new owners also own The Angel in Burford which generally has very good reviews. I do hope that within a few weeks the new reviews will place The Fox in the top tier of restaurants in Burford where it belongs.

Really surprised by the recent negative reviews of the pub. Myself and my wife stayed nearby and popped in twice. First time for a couple of drinks late Friday afternoon, where the bar was quiet with a few customers but a roaring fire and friendly staff. While there I asked if it was best to book a table for Sunday dinner and was recommended to. We turned up on Sunday at 1.45 which was a bout 15 minutes early and got seated straight away. I’m pleased I booked as there didn’t look a spare table. We both had the Sunday dinner myself the beef and my wife the pork belly. 2 delicious hearty meals both good size. Large crispy roast potatoes (fluffy in the middle), big yorkie with plenty of veg and gravy. We stayed for another 2 drinks after. This was the perfect Sunday afternoon pub and when we come back to area I will not hesitate to come back.

We had booked this for a 1 night stay before reading the reviews, a mistake I won't be doing in a hurry. It's extremely run down and looks like it's not had any care and attention for some time or even a good clean, which is such a shame as it has some great potential, and is in an idyllic location and could be an amazing. The room we stayed was in need of lick of paint and a good clean, it did have its own private balcony which did come as a lovely surprise. Everywhere you looked in the place was filthy. Dirt and grime everywhere. The banister down to the restaurant was covered in thick grime. The tables were so sticky my jumper got stuck to it and not to mention the dog sitting next to us whilst we ate was slightly off putting, however lovely and friendly he was. When we came to check out and pay we were not asked if we enjoyed our stay, not sure if this was because of the look of disgust on our faces or the gentleman just didn't care and wanted our money. I wish we had cancelled and booked elsewhere now, but decided to take the reviews with a pinch of salt and see for ourselves as everyone's expectations are different. I hope the money we paid for our room goes towards employing a decent cleaner and a few pots of paints.

My wife and I called in for lunch last week. The top line on the Man Menu was for Brixham Fie Pie. Having been to Brixham and enjoyed the fish pies there we both opted for this dish. What a disappointment. Although my wife found a couple of pieces fish in her pie - including a square lump of salmon (Yes they must catch lots of salmon in Brixham!) My pie revealed a few shrimps and a fish bone. Being British we carried on eating through our meals hoping the pies would improve and not wanting to cause a fuss. The young man collecting our plates asked if everything had been ok and we said NO. However, because we complained when we reached the end of the meal the owner wouldn't even talk to us and shouted at the lady manger who we approached about a partial refund. Apparently we are not the first to complain about the fish pie at The Fox Inn. My wife is the culinary expert in our house and thinks that the pies are made using ingredients from a large catering bag of fish bits that you can buy fairly cheaply. As the pies were in individual pie dishes, the manager suggested that it was probably pot luck as to what was scooped up and put in each dish before the mash and cheese topping was put on. Our advice - drive past this place. The Lamb Inn a few miles away serves much better food.

Its in a lovely setting, and friendly enough service, but the place is a bit run down. A large number of tables were empty on a Saturday which should have been a signal. We ordered the "special" thinking it would be quick, but it took 45 minutes for our moules marinieres and omelette to come. I don't know what they had done to the moules but they were very unappetising and I was unable to finish them, which is saying a lot for me. My lime and soda was made with some green liquid that had never seen a lime. Sadly, this place will need to up its game before we go back - starting with Rose's lime cordial..

Disappointing- once you find your way in!Shambolic service and tasteless food. It tasted like plastic ‘bought in’ food.Clearly staff shortage so they should only offer services which they can cope with.Sympathetic to Covid problems but dining area dreary and makeshift bar which seems to be housed in an empty garage was sadly lacking in choice and customer service.Pudding was an ice cream carton (of the cinema variety!) dug out from freezer and dumped on table.Maybe we expected too much but we live in the Cotswolds and usually go to our local pubs which have coped much better it seems - so thought we would try and support others in the area.It would be fine for a drink by the river on a sunny day.Sadly we won’t be back .

Extremadamente decepcionante.

This pub has everything going for it in terms of location and charm, but it could be so much better with just a little bit of TLC. I had lunch here - same fish pie others have mentioned, which was ok, but it was accompanied by salad, drowning in bottled salad dressing and topped with tinned sweetcorn (again mentioned by others). Also had red cabbage coleslaw obviously out of a bulk catering container, and possibly just past its sell by date. It wouldn't take much effort to make a fresh dressing (maybe even cheaper) and skip the sweetcorn and catering coleslaw. Maybe clean the terrace too? I really wanted to love this pub, and I am sure the staff care enough to take note of reviews - please, just try a little harder with the food etc... it could be great. I live nearby and want to come back and want to recommend it, but at the moment, I won't.

We had passed the sign to The Fox, 16th century riverside pub many times and today decided to go for lunch. On arrival we parked in an almost empty carpark (another carpark a little further on) and saw picnic tables nicely set out on the riverbank - so far so good. We went in to order and chose two tasty sounding specials- a ploughman's at £15 and Cheesy topped fish pie at £17 - pricey but we assumed it would be delicious. We went to the outside riverside table area which was littered with cigarette butts, Rizla papers on the table, and a strong cigarette smell. The tables weren't particularly clean- I was already regretting having ordered food. My ploughmans arrived and looked Ok. A slice of nice home cooked ham, a slice of (fairly stale) brown bread spread with cheap butter or margarine. No cheddar, just a lump of blue cheese - they did change it for a lump of what I'd describe as plastic cheddar on request. Slices of beetroot from a jar, a large spoonful of chutney (possibly Branstons) and a salad mix drowning in dressing. My partner had the fish pie, but said it was very mediocre and the topping had a very synthetic taste which left a lingering bad taste in the mouth - this from a man who will eat anything! The serving staff had food stained clothes. All in all, a tip off. Could have been so nice, great setting but dirty, uncared for and what looked like discarded dog bones on a table at the back. We will not return. Such an opportunity missed. Several foreign families visiting- I shudder to think what view of English food they took away....

Quaint, traditional pub at the side of a river, we expected the place to be well looked after but it appears to be uncared for. Ordered 2 coffees - one decaff which could only be supplied from an instant sachet, the regular coffee from a bean machine. Was shocked to find the cost was £3.20 each! Won't be returning for another.

No puedo recomendar a The Fox lo suficiente.

In an idyllic setting by the River Windrush, and with a riverside garden for warmer weather, the Fox is a classic Cotswold pub. The main bar features much exposed Cotswold stone and appears to have changed little in the last 40 or so years. A separate restaurant has been added at the rear in what was once the skittle alley. They like horseracing here and the TV in the bar is turned on when their favourite sport is being shown. Tied to the local Donnington Brewery, their excellent ales are served in perfect condition. The food is very good too, with good use made of local produce and generous portions although a little on the pricey side.

We stopped at The Fox Inn for lunch as we were driving in Cotswolds AONB and had a lovely lunch. We were there in mid-November when things were quiet, so many of the rooms overlooking the river weren’t open and we ate in the main room on the level where you enter. Nonetheless, the place was charming, if typically dark for an old building, the service was good (not full table service, you order at the bar and they bring the food to your table) and the food was outstanding. We ended up ordering a mix of starters and mains including the soup of the day and the Chicken Pie. The soup and other starters were good, but the Chicken Pie was really the star of the show. This chicken pie was quite possibly the best I have ever had. It was so good that I had to make sure that my family had a chance to taste it to prove to them that I wasn’t making it up that this was a really excellent chicken pie. Everyone agreed that this was really special. Admittedly, this is a sample of one, but I highly recommend it if you are in the area.

Just returned home from a visit to the Fox. We had been there before so rather complacently didn’t look at the recent reviews which we subsequently found to be highly critical. The room was excellent, it was clean spacious and very comfortable. The pub is in a delightful setting and we had no issues over noise. We ate at the pub on both nights and bearing in mind it is the Cotswolds didn’t find the cost particularly high. The food was clearly home cooked and the quality was good. The cooked breakfast was freshly prepared and well cooked. The portions were massive, too much for our appetites on the first morning but easily sorted on the second.

Although the sign outside stated “Open All Day” and “Breakfast served” our arrival at 11.00am found the bar empty. I called twice through to the kitchen where I could see the landlord/chef was preparing food, but he appeared not the hear me. When he did deem to serve me he did so with apparent reticence, as if he was thinking “Why is this customer distracting me?” He barely passed the time of day and once he’d served the two coffees and I’d paid, he disappeared back into the kitchen. We drank our coffees and left without seeing him again.

Stopped here for a spot of lunch as had a great time and great food here when we visited last September. Walked in to find no one behind the bar. Not unusual, maybe a keg needed changing? My partner found the barmaid in the kitchen chatting to the cook (I use the term cook very loosely). Despite making eye contact and knowing we were waiting for service she continued to rabbit on with her pal. Waited about five minutes in total, which is unacceptable when the only other guests there were a party of four already eating. Had Kiss FM blaring out Ed Sheeran which doesn't quite tie in with the country atmosphere and rustic decor (no offence Ed if you're reading). Eventually got served by the barmaid who was friendly enough. We ordered food despite the exuberant prices as we were ravenous. All around £15-£17 for lunch time meals! We ordered scampi and chips, warm chicken and bacon salad and chicken liver pâté (a starter) and three soft drinks. The scampi and chips does what it says on the tin - it's scampi and chips out the freezer. You can't get too excited about it. The chicken liver pate turned up as a beige sloppy mousse and was barely edible and the warm salad, drowned in vinaigrette had lumps of gristle and cartilage from the chicken scattered throughout it. Disgusting! No one asked how the food was either. The barmaid slipped out for a fag and walked past us and still didn't ask how it was. Worse of all the bill came to £51! In hindsight we should have complained, but we were so dumbfounded by the whole experience we just wanted to get out of there!

The Fox Inn is a small traditional pub which we visited last year. Unfortunately it seems it has changed hands and has gone down hill. We had lunch but were surprised by the prices. Pub grub dishes, all for over £16. £16 for scampi and chips?! They food was basic, practically inedible. My chicken and bacon salad (£16!) had bits of grizzle in it and the "bacon" was hard. Whoever cooked it had poured a bottle of salad dressing on it. My partner had scampi and chips and lost his filling afterwards! The barmaid had Kiss FM playing loudly on the flat screen tv which didn't seem to fit the atmosphere of a cosy pub and wasn't very relaxing. We also weren't asked how our meal was at any point!!!Will not be going back. Especially with so much competition in the area!!

We returned for a second year in a row for the 'Foxstock' music festival which had been a great event the year previous. This year unfortunately prooved to be a disappointment. The menu on offer for the festival was only the main menu which to be quite frank was extortionate in price for what was essentially pub grub and when I asked if I could buy just single portions of chips I was denied, If we could have bought 9 portions of chips for a couple of pounds each, the pub still would have made on it but instead we didn't buy any food as none of us were prepared to pay nearly £16 for sausage & mash! My group stayed for the duration of the afternoon enjoying rounds of Cider, as we had taken a taxi to the venue and had a later one booked to take us home - it was just a shame that at no point were we ever charged the same price for the same order of drinks and when challenged the bar staff were less than understanding of our enquiry. I was also greated with the same lack of interest when I queried that a hog roast had been advertised on line and yet wasn't on offer. These may seem like small things but when we had paid for taxis to get to the event, with the intention of being there all Afternoon, to then be met with inconsistent pricing of drinks and ridiculously overpriced good with no compromise it was very disappointing.

The riverside setting could have been lovely but everything needed a tidy up. The food was ok, the ham (of ham, egg and chips) was cut very thin and the chips and eggs weren't very warm. My other half had a ploughmans and the portion was v small for the amount we paid. The lad that served us was polite but didn't smile at all or give us any particular customer service. Would be better if they had a tidy up and changed the prices to reflect the quality and quantity of the food. Disappointed.

Booked a table here for dinner before seeing a circus event down the road. On arriving we were told that as there's only two of us they would put us in the bar area, as they wanted to 'save their restaurant tables for more people'. From the outset this didn't make us particularly feel valued or glad to have booked a table in advance. As there was only one other couple and us eating in the bar (surrounded by people and dogs standing around drinking) we were essentially forgotten about by the waiting staff who were attending to people down in the restaurant area. Very slow, and not particularly friendly service (45 minutes after finishing our mains the plates were still on the table and nobody asked if we wanted desert or more drinks etc). Ordered two pints of coke, both came only about 4/5 full each time - glad I didn't order beer here! The food was 'ok', but more expensive than it deserved to be. Ie, very average good from a laminated menu, at Gastropub prices. Overall it was only just ok, and very underwhelming. I sadly would t recommend the food, service or value at this pub. On the flip side, it's location is pretty.

I can only echo the many reviews which say that the food is average and it is very expensive for what it is. I had the fresh dressed crab salad with dill mayonnaise, hot buttered new potatoes &homemade coleslaw. At my first mouthful, I wondered if the crab was fully defrosted... That's how good it was. And if the coleslaw was homemade, I am an Irish man... (I am French and a woman). The new potatoes were nice. The dill mayo, I did not even try it. There was a few bits of green fighting each other on the corner of the plate. Very sad state of affairs. £18.95 for that was I thought very very steep... Hubby had the pulled beef cheese burger and I have to say this looked the better option. He also declared it very average and again, £14.95... Ouch...The garden overlooking the water is a very sad place, it needs cleaning a little bit. The staff were not hugely friendly either. The only reason why we went there so that there was a show we were seeing later that afternoon so definitely won't be back there.

To make this clear; it's a local British pub and not a fine dining establishment. Even when we came after 2pm (the standard closing time for lunch) they still offered to swing something up for us from the menu and the food is good normal pub grub. Not the most exotic experience you'll taste but good food that will sustain you. The pub also allows dogs in and indeed got a big great Irish Wolfdog (could be off on the breed) who likes to sleep under the tables. Prices for lunch in the 10 to 15 GBP range so about average.

We didn't bother complaining as there wasn't much other choice and my husband said that the barman who served him was not very friendly - seemed only to be interested in the locals. Fair enough if you don't like tourists or visitors but without them these pubs would go out of business. As we left, we took our empty glasses to the bar and said Thanks, even though we weren't exactly happy with our pints. We shouldn't have bothered as again the barman (he may even have been the landlord) totally ignored us. This was incredibly rude.
