Truly awful service. Stayed one night. Lovely room with great facilities. However woke the next day and went for breakfast at 9.15 and no one around. Called for someone but not staff on site. Other people staying were perplexed as literally no one on site. We left having paid for breakfast but went into a local cafe with others who followed. Will be ensuring we get a refund for no breakfast we paid for. Never had such a bizarre situation occur staying anywhere.

With the addition of a newly appointed head chef I was excited to revisit the Fox and try out the food. As always the Rebellion IPA was on point. The menu was evenly balanced with the addition of some snacks giving you plenty to choose from. The food was well presented and delicious. The pork belly with a gherkin sauce and the lemon posset and sloe gin where the highlights for me. I’d highly recommend!

We have visited the Chiltern Fox recently on several occasions after moving to the area, and were always impressed with the quality of the food and friendly staff. The restaurant recently closed for a period to make some changes and we were very curious to see what was going to be different. When we returned for the Valentine’s Day tasting menu we were not disappointed, It was sensational! Greeted on arrival with a glass of Prosecco we were ushered through to the dining room with a view of the kitchen. I have attached photographs of the food to this review The food on the course tasting was some of the best tasting and best presented I’ve ever had. It hands down beat tasting menu’s I’ve had at some Michelin starred establishments and my dining partner felt the same. And it certainly beat those establishments on price point too. The staff were attentive without crowding us, the wine list was very good, and the general ambience for a romantic evening was spot on. The red rose at the end of the evening was a nice touch. We’re very excited to be going back for a Sunday roast at our earliest convenience and cannot wait to see other special events in the future. It’s 5 minutes from the M40 junction and you’d be mad not to visit.

Beautiful setting but we were not happy! The only thing that was enjoyable was the salad all other food we had was average to poor. Service was ok, nothing special. But the most disappointing thing was that, in times when COVID-19 cases are rising, the restaurant didn’t do any of the government recommendations. I work in hospitality and I did not understand how easy measures were not taken. No track and trace, no distancing. When we were there a group of around 20 people came around talking about a game of cricket (obviously not from the same household) and sat all together, nearly on the top of where we were. Very uncomfortable!

To start this review off, let’s go from the beginning. When we first arrived we noticed that the hotel / restaurant wasn’t very busy, almost deadly quiet, when we checked in the lady behind reception was not very friendly and instantly we felt bad vibes from her. Checking into the room, was a mission, the door itself had 3 locks; two key locks and a card lock, the card lock, doesn’t actually work and can only be used for power in the room. The room itself was cosy, however, we quickly noticed the room didn’t seem too clean. We had a half used toilet roll in the bathroom, there was a dirty, what seemed to have been a used tissue in one bedside draw, and the other, the handle was broken. There also seemed to be no heating, even though there was a radiator, but no way to turn it on. On the booking.com website, it lists that there is a hairdryer. However, you don’t get your own one in your room, it seems to be a communal hairdryer, which wasn’t available to us during our stay. The walls are incredibly thin so if you’re trying to have a lay in, be prepared to be woken at around 8:00am. There is also an extremely early checkout time for this hotel, which is 10:00am, you can pay an extra £10 though per hour more you want to spend there. Now, let me tell you about the security of this place! We’d gone out to a party the night we stayed here and didn’t get in until 2:30am. The front door to the building is left unlocked with no one on the reception counter, worst thing is, anyone can just walk in by pushing the door, which isn’t a very comforting thought. Overall, unless it was necessary I wouldn’t stay here again.

The receptionist was rude upon our arrival, and seemed frustrated that our part of 10 did not arrive at exactly the same time. As we were a wedding party, you would have thought they would understand that we needed some flexibility, but everything seemed too much for the staff. The rooms were clean but there were no towels, and the hotel was generally in a bad state of repair. The food was ok in the evening, but again the staff seemed reluctant to serve us. The receptionist kept suggesting that we have one single bill for the whole party, and seemed quite angry when we explained that we wanted to pay individually. Overall, despite the convenient location I would never stay here again as the staff were so unprofessional.

My friend and I booked a night at the Fox using a gift voucher. The gentleman behind the reception desk had an extremely casual approach and did not make us feel particularly welcome (we found out later that he was the chef). He then proceeded to give us a room right above the bar, where every word of conversation below could be heard. We asked for another room and were taken to another room, further away and quiet. Not sure why no one thought of allocating us a quiet room to start with if the hotel was not full.Dinner was an absolute joke. We were handed a shabby looking photocopied menu featuring three uninspiring choices. This was on a Saturday night! When we queried the lack of choice, we were told by the chef himself who was by then sitting at the bar that he had catered for a birthday party that day, that he had no intention of getting back to the kitchen, and that he had put one of the junior members of staff in the kitchen instead. He then offered us a complimentary dessert to make up for the inconvenience. The main courses were of very average quality and one of them was served cold and had to be sent back. When our complimentary dessert arrived, it was very obviously the left overs of the birthday cake that had been served at the function the chef had mentioned!!The whole experience was really unprofessional and we were left with the distinct feeling that no one really cared about the place or its customers! The bedroom was clean and adequate, breakfast was of acceptable quality.I would definitely not go back to this establishment nor recommend to anyone in the area.

I have just returned from a 2-night break at this charming peaceful and well maintained Country Inn which is conveniently situated just a couple of miles from the M40 motorway.Although the room we were given was rather on the small side it was clean and comfortable with all the usual mod-cons (multi-channel t.v. strong wifi signal, tea making facilities etc.)The bathroom was particularly well equipped with a powerfulshower, complimentary shampoo and conditioner, fluffy clean towels etc.Throughout our stay we found all the staff to be very friendly and helpful which made for a relaxed atmosphere in the bar and the restaurant. The food was tasty and plentiful with a variety of dishes on offer from the menu which changed daily. We chatted to the Manageress who told us that she has been at The Fox for only two months. She admitted that before her arrival there had been problems with some of the staff and the (then) Chef. Like the proverbial new broom she has gone in, replaced many of the staff and now manages a very well run and pleasant establishment. I have no hesitation in recommending The Fox to you.p.s. A special thank you to Anaita who worked from early morning until late at night with a continual smile on her face

I stayed at this hotel, B&B, Guest House, whatever you decide to call it! For four nights (I was supposed to stay five nights, but couldn't cope the extra night!!).My first impression of the room, very very small, a single bed pushed up against the wall, I had a better single mans room whilst in the RAF (and that was small!!).The food in the restaurant is nothing to shout about, all with chips and over-priced!The barman, who I believe was also one of the owners couldn't crack a smile and had very little customer service skills....I decided to invite my work colleague back for a drink at the bar, he was shouted at by the "unfriendly barman when he walked in, I had to explain that he was with me, in order for him to be allowed to stay!!).Back to the room, not only small, but the room was too hot with the radiator pipes banging and with water gushing outside the window due to possible gutters being blocked!!It's not what I would call an hotel and I wouldn't stay here again, only here due to my companies choice!!!

Service very bad. Had to wait an hour and a half. Booked the previous day and told them we would be a party of 10. Person we spoke to didn't speak very good English so had to repeat things a few times. The food was plain, dull and small portions. They informed us they didn't have potatoes so mash was unavailable! The staff were unfriendly and mainly ignored us, except when taking the food order - could be the language barrier again. I have been to this pub over the years and always found it to be quite a pleasant experience, but I would definitely not advise anyone to dine there until some radical changes have been made.

Walked here with friends from camp site near Watlington to have lunch mid way through our ramble. We were first customers at 12 on Sunday. I asked for 2 pints of Doom Bar and when the barman tried to pull the first, the barrel was empty. Good start? The group only wanted light lunches, so I ordered a starter - "whitebait with alioli and a slice of lemon", at £5.95. When the small plate was put in front of me I counted 10 whitebait - no bread or salad - just 4 squirts of alioli and a slice of lemon. It didn't take me long to work out that is nearly 60p per tiny fish! I went back to the bar and looked at the menu again, and then said to the barman that I was not happy with the amount of food on my plate at that price. He just shrugged his shoulders. So I won't be going there again.

Met two friends for lunch. Great disappointment for us all as it looks nice from road. First sign was that no one else was dining there on sunny lunchtime. It's a small hotel too, they said. Disinterested unsmiling staff who had slight difficulty with language, dishes were very average and "dry", toilet a bit smelly and prices a bit too much for what was served. Phone was very frequently ringing near us but staff didn't bother to answer. Lost business? Felt like answering it ourselves to get a bit of peace. May soon write this up more fully for national hotel/restaurant guide. Classic example of what can go wrong. Not awful but could be so much easilly better with more dedication to all round proficiency. Don't like damning it but must urge caution to others. Great pity....

Original quote for this function was £700, this was eventually reduced to £250. If my family member has sense she will only pay for the hire of the hall which was set up amazingly for the children. This pub is only 2 minutes drive from junction 5 of the M40 and is in the village of Ibstone near High Wycombe. We visited here on 6th December 2014, and were welcomed by some great festive lights, inside and out, a roaring log fire, a very pretty Christmas Tree and polite and charming staff. The choice of starters was a little limited, but adequate. The list of mains was much better and it took some time for us to decide, and we weren’t disappointed. The food was very good. Doombar was one of the main ales, which I think is one of the top 5 ales in the country, excellent. Finished off with a quality cup of coffee. This is the second time I have visited this pub, which is also a great place to start some lovely country walks, of which there are many around here. I will definitely go back.

Have just returned from having the worse meal ever! Overpriced drinks, and atrocious food. The pate was tasteless served with stale bread and without any butter. Main courses were even worse. Roast beef served without potatoes but with lettuce and gravy, belly of pork with cold mash, gravy and again "lettuce" , burger in a stale bun and cold chips and a ceasar salad that was just iceberg lettuce with a few pieces of chicken but no dressing at all. We did complain and did not pay for the beef but as I still wasn't happy I asked to see the manager. I was told there wasn't one available. This place beggars belief. The food is dreadful, the service is hopeless and it’s run by an arrogant Russian who says she’s a philosopher supported by a rude Ukrainian waiter who says he’s idling away time writing a five year dissertation on the hospitality industry before applying for a British passport. My partner’s dinner which was severed on a stone cold plate and comprised greasy pork belly served with a mound of cold potato mash which had the look and consistency wallpaper paste. The look of abhorrent disbelief on the partners face resembled that of the diners in Faulty Towers. Both the manager who described herself as the co-owner and the waiter both said the chef was an Italian lady but when the chef later emerged from the kitchen to go to the loo he was most definitely male and Russian to boot. If you have a reasonable sense of humour and want to experience ‘shocked disbelief’ but aren’t in the least bit hungry this is the place to go.

Other girl looked pretty annoyed. After waiting 10 minutes and someone going to find a member of staff, the most miserable waiter/bar tender was fetched. He moodily dealt with the two people in front of us before giving us a look that could freeze hell over. I explained we had a reservation and he walked off, saying nothing! I turned to my partner and said 'are we supposed to follow him?!', so we did. He had no idea where we were supposed to be sitting and after a 'tour' of the restaurant he eventually sat us next to a big TV with Emmerdale on, he had still said absolutely nothing to us! We were slightly annoyed by this point and discussed if we should go. He walked back over (I thought maybe to bring menus), and simply asked 'are you going to sit here'. It was with this I turned and told him we were leaving and that his service was very poor. He walked away as if i didn't exist!! The whole experience was horrendous and I am SO glad we left! Roaming around the countryside on a Sunday, looking for a pub lunch we made the mistake of stopping here. Despite a few cars parked outside (probably staff in hindsight) the place was devoid of customers. They were apparently serving food so we ordered a roast lunch from a rambling and incohesive menu. What we got was nowhere near a roast! It was in fact an unidentified "meat" in a strange almost curry flavoured "sauce" that smothered everything copiously and was apparently meant to be gravy. The vegetables were vaguely edible in a bland boiled sort of way, but frankly anyone would be hard pushed not cook better at home - and I mean anyone! For this they charged the sort of prices you'd expect form a reasonably decent restaurant. In all honesty they had a cheek to charge us at all!Am I surprised it was empty, when a well situated country pub not far from a major town should be heaving on a Sunday lunchtime? No not one bit. What suprises me, no actually amazes me, is that it is still running at all!Eat elsewhere.

Nice looking country pub/hotel in a lovely area, a pleasant lunch anticipated! The service was appalling, we did not receive one of the children's meals and the guy behind the bar argued that we didn't order it, he told us three times that we hadn't ordered it, we obviously hadn't missed out one of two children and it would have been okay if he had just apologised and put the order through, did not appreciate being told agAin and again that we hadn't ordered the food. The burger and chips for the adults was really nice but they obviously fob off kids with really cheap and inferior food. The kids burger and mash was disgusting, the sausages were obviously the cheapest bulk bought frozen affair possible and the mashed potato was. Powdered mash, we also had to send it away to have gravy added as it had been forgotten! The chicken fountains were coated in breadcrumbs and were salty enough to give the chips a heart attack. Don't get me started on the toilet with the flush sensor that flushes mid-sitting but won't flush at the conclusion of business and the hand dryer that blasts you in the face. Didn't get a hello or goodbye either. All in all a very bad experience, do not take children here!

I stayed at the Inn in July 13 for three nights and the food , accommodation and customer care are of a high standard.Ideally placed between Oxford and High Wycombe and just two minutes from the M40 it is the perfect place to stay for either business or pleasure.Select a room upstairs if possible when staying in the Summer as the Garden seating outside is well used however the noise is not excessive and seems to stop completely after 10pm

Based on previous reviews of this restaurant it seems a mixed bag but we have always had good service from attentive staff however we have pretty much always been at off peak times i.e. early - mid afternoon. There is a small restaurant section in the pub and they serve food all day however its normally best to ring and book just to make sure they can accomodate. The staff are always welcoming, however when we have been its normally very quiet with few other people in the restaurant or pub.Overall the food has been very good, occasionally its slightly over cooked but overall its good.

We live just down the road and have been to the Fox Inn a number of times and enjoyed our visits.....until we went a few weeks ago. The service was very poor, and the food was very bad. There was only only about 3 other tables eating that evening so not busy at all.....these are the things then went wrong.....we never got our starters, they never asked if we wanted more drinks, we had to keep getting up but there was no staff about, I had to go into the kitchen and ask for sources, no one asked if we were ok or if we wanted anything else, the food wasn't great, very basic. We ordered pudding and and out of 5 of us only 3 got spoons, we timed it and it was over 5 minutes so asked for 2 more! I think the puddings were from the freezer! The staff were very rude and have no people skills. To complain I had to call the manager from my mobile as she had left for the evening, I told her what had happened, she said sorry but didn't really care, so I said I wasn't paying for anything as it was all so bad.....the manager just said OK, that's fine!!Then to top it all off after complaining over the Easter Bank Holiday we had a text message from a member of staff to say he had been given the sack because of our complaint and then called 3 times on our private mobile that was given when booking the table. I have since then contacted The Fox Inn and Victoria the manager isn't really interested or she doesn't understand data protection. If you are thinking of going there..............DON'T!! please spend your hard earnt money elsewhere. It is a shame but since being taken over the place has gone down hill and we will not be going back there.

We went here for Sunday lunch and had a very mixed experience. We were surprised just to be given the standard menus - no Sunday lunch special menu. Having perused this for 10 minutes, we were ready to order and then the waiter came to tell us that there was also roast beef, roast lamb and roast turkey - something of an afterthought. We chose roast lamb, fish and chips and the carrot and Swiss cheese tart. The roast lamb was a big disappointment - it certainly didn't seem to have been roasted today and we think the roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding had come from the freezer. It looked tired. The fish and chips were better and looked very nice. The fish was huge and the chips were nicely cooked. The carrot and Swiss cheese tart was excellent and far exceeded my expectations. The pastry was lovely and crisp and the filling worked surprisingly well (I was dubious when I ordered but vegetarians so rarely get something new and different to try that it was worth a go!).The service was very poor however. There were only three tables dining so goodness knows what it would be like if it were full. Our tablecloth had coffee stains and peas dried on from yesterday's service which I think is disgusting. Our food was delivered without any sauces or condiments and the waiting staff had disappeared so I had to get up from the table and go to the bar to ask for them. One waiter was smiley but a bit vacant. The other was more switched on but surly and totally non-smiling. Desserts were a bit of a let down, as they so often are. The parfait was frozen so hard, my son struggled to eat it. The chocolate tart was nice but my husband felt it could easily be Brake Brothers food.It is a couple of years since we were last here and it has definitely gone downhill. The decor is looking a bit sad and the toilets definitely need maintenance work. It is a shame because this is a nice venue. We won't be in a hurry to return.

Six of us went to this restuarant last Saturday, good thing we did as we doubled there clients. There was about 6 people in the bar and no one in the restaurant, so atmosphere was a bit lacking. Very attentive staff, i mean this in the broadest term, as the waitress/manager was the only staff front of house the whole evening. The waitress worked her legs off, she was attentive and service was not that slow. Food good, varied menu and good value.Wouldn't particuarly recommend but wouldn't dismiss either.

The well-presented, delicious food was let down by appaling service, which is such a shame. Although there were very few diners there when we went for a Friday lunch, the staff seemed to keep disappearing. Each time we needed something we would have to get up and go and find someone. On arriving we asked for a table outside for six. Rather than being put in a group round a table, as you might expect, we were spread out across three tables, but only sitting down one side. This seemed a strange set-up, but when we asked whether we could rearrange the table setting, so that we could all be closer together, we were told abruptly that that was not possible, as a "passage way was needed". No alternative was offered. After a while, we found we had to insist on the setting being rearranged, so that we could get out of the direct, burning sun. The face our waitress pulled was a picture. Customer service was clearly not at the top of her priority list. The main course arrived fairly promptly. It was very good, albeit not always as described on the menu. However, when it came to ordering dessert, we had to get up and go back in to the bar to fetch the menus, go back in to place the order and then go back in to ask to pay. The same applied for ordering drinks. Again, the staff did not seem overkeen for our custom.I would have said something to the manager/proprietor at the time, but there was no one around who seemed to be in charge, overseeing the quality of service provided. So if your idea of a good meal out is to go somewhere where you'll be ignored by the staff, please consider this restaurant. If good service is a key part of your meal out, I'd suggest you look elsewhere.

We came back to the Fox after eating here a couple of weeks ago. Previously the food had been great but the service slow, this time, the service was still slow (and a bit odd) but the food was not good. Had roasts like last time but this time the meat was poor quality and the veg was raw (seriously). When we asked for bread, the waitress brought out 2 rolls (there were 4 of us), we asked for 2 more and she brought 4. After we had finished our bread, she then put oil and vinegar on the table which was for the bread not the roast dinners. All in all, we won't be going back which is a shame as it isn't busy. One last thing - it is FREEZING in the winter.

We tend to come here as it is never as busy as the hambledon valley pubs, you can generally get a table. Came for Sunday dinner yesterday and it was a mixed experience. The service was friendly but super slow - we weren't in too much of a hurry but had a little one with us who has a small attention span. The roasts were pretty spectacular and tasty. The meat was well cooked and the potatoes were super crunchy. Good meal all round but there is a limited menu on a Sunday - only a couple of choices so that may not appeal to all. All in all it was good, if a slow

The food at The Fox is pretty good and good value too. The setting in The Chiltern Hills is delightful with Red Kites wheeling overhead. Sadly this is no country pub with a roaring log fire but very much a corporate version of a dining pub - model eficiency but no charm or character. With no proprietor on site to lead the team to make sure the welcome is warm and genuine there is a disappointing coldness about eating here. The outside was stewn with detritus from the wind damaged Christmas tree, mixed with piles of cigarette butts . If there is a manager they possibly don't walk from the car park to the main door as the public does - perhaps they should. The quality of the food made up, in some respects, for the lack of atmosphere and functional service. There are many places with similarly pleasant settings and good food but with a much warmer welocme and genuine pub character.I enjoyed the food but probably won't be hurrying back. A successful country pub has to be either a great pub or have great food. Fortunately the Chilterns has many of both.

a la carte lamb lovely (and hot!); liver was cool and had to be sent back (by which time the drenched broccoli had finally collapsed). Lovely building and location, and polite (apologetic) staff - no warning about lacking water in the 'posh' (i.e. infra-red) toilets: eventually i had to use the sink under the bar!

We took advantage of a special offer - afternoon tea for £5. I don't think we've ever had better value for money - we got a plate of fresh-made sandwiches, home-made scones with cream butter and jam, and a further three cakes, again all home-made. We got top-ups of tea / coffee as well. Contrast this with the treatment at Danesfield House a few miles away (poor service, two mediocre mass-produced scones, mandatory service charge for twice the price) and the Fox Country Inn offered us a quite unforgettable tea - though as diabetics, it probably shortened our lifespan.
