The Fox in York

A wonderful experience, should have won best pub in York this year but was robbed! The weekly quiz on a Wednesday is fantastic and full of fun and great times. Loads of stools, which is great!

The Fox is a traditional late Victorian unspoiled multi-room pub with a lot of original features. There is an excellent wide range of beers, lagers, and cider, including five hand pulled cask conditioned real ales, the ones we sampled where excellent condition. The staff are very friendly. There is a nice outside beer garden, a large customer car park, and a covered outside seating area with a heater. This is a great pub highly recommended. The pub is dog friendly.

Interesting little pub, couldn't stay long, but the beers that we did try were excellent. Friendly staff, in a very English sort of way.

Lovely pub but we were disappointed that there were no baby change facilities anywhere - so had to change my toddler’s nappy on the bathroom floor, which was not ideal for us or for the other customers. A fold down changing table in the men’s and women’s toilets would be a big improvement for us.

really nice pub in the summer, big beer garden and occasional bands on. it's nice to pop in for a pint on the way to town or for an afternoon session. the pub occasionally has some really nice guest ales on as well. bar staff are always friendly and service is very fast even when changing barrels. highly recommend if you're local or visiting!

Normal local pub. Similar prices to bars in town so not as cheap as other locals nearby. Always busy though. Big beer garden and sometimes pizza etc available.

We have hovered round the fox for a few years. We've lived on its door step, we've lived out of it range and we are currently living within walking distance. This is our pub! This is my parents pub as well and they live further afield than we ever have. We love our family friendly pub!

Great pub, one of my favourites in York - great beer garden, great atmosphere, great staff, great beer. There's often a burger van or something similar there too, so they've got you covered in case you're feeling peckish.

We visited 1 Sunday 3 W/eeks ago, on speck. Lovely day Sat in the garden and tasted the Freshly made various burgers I had a marmalade topping topping on mine, think it it had cheese in it and the young cook said he had pressed the fresh beef first himself imto shape which tbey buy in. I can honestly say it was lovely in flavour. Hope this you couple do well.! . Will return. The old pud good also and has character has been a local of my nephews friends and families who live near for years. Service good, sociable. The meal was outside catering.in the garden.

Fantastic pub. It's a proper pub not one of these trendy places. That's what makes it so special. Staff are great and always on the ball. No messing just great service. Always call here when we've been to York. Nice detour on our way home. Haven't eaten there so can't rate the food

Great Pie and chips on a Thursday night

I love this pub. Great selection of beer and authentic interior. Great location. Perfect for a quick pint on the way home from a busy day, a few drinks with friends or a pit - stop for families on a sunny afternoon. It's an incredibly versatile pub and suitable for any occasion. Plenty of beautiful memories during Summer time with pop-up food vans in the beer garden and good company. The service, however, could do with being just a little more refined and attentive with better pace and engagement. Friendly enough when eventually served but indifferent approach to both people and beer (and hygiene) which doesn't quite match the rest of the experience.

Lovely pub close to where we staying on a break in York. Made to feel very welcome, great drinks selection, lots of families and dogs in the beer garden at the back and had a great atmosphere.

Been coming here since I was about 3 years old, playing on the rickety play area in back garden. Always loved this place and can't see that changing! Food isn't served in the pub but does have a food van on the back occasionally

After a 5 year gap we are back in York twice in a fortnight. Madge and Boothroyd with us this trip. Decided to find this marvelous CAMRA Good Beer Guide pub a twenty minute walk out of town from the Station. A large multi room pub with a big beer garden. Beers from Ossett Brewery. Booth had a pint of Butterly 3.8% bitter. £4.50 less 10% if you are a card carrying CAMRA member. First visit and well worth it. A gem of a proper pub.

Sat in the back room on a Sunday afternoon with my family. There were too many stools to walk in, staff personal belongings strewn around, dog piss on the floor, sticky tables and the most disgusting men’s I’ve ever come across with a weird urinalysis system that makes you piss on the floor and you can smell from outside the door. In all, not fit for a pig

Any one wanting to stay just outside of york centre the fox public house is 10 out of 10 fab staff and food excellent its in the village york ...don't stay at church view b@b it's very basic and unkempt spiral stair case which isn't practical with luggage thought we were staying at a b@ b but turns out its bed room not great

Always a great atmosphere. Good drinks, good staff and a great beer garden come summer with plenty of events on.

As good pubs go, The Fox must surely be up there with the best. Well worth the walk from the city centre. A shame no other pubs nearby are open lunchtime to compliment it. Beers all come from Ossett Brewery so no worries there. An absolute delight to have called in here

On our day out in York we bounced around several Cask Marque pubs and this one didn’t disappoint. Great ale and a very pleasant atmosphere. Belter!

Had a couple of drinks here, no food. Not easy to get to with access shut off along the way, so had to go into the station and around to get there, but was worth the effort. Beers were well kept and tasty

The pub quiz on a Weds night is great, it's all dog friendly and they have some ace drinks on tap. I've always wanted to try out the food vans out back during the summer, but never get a chance! Goals.

Oh my, I'm supposed to be moving in to the Holgate area very soon and I love that pub Been coming for years, it is very traditional, it is such a friendly place for all sorts of families. The gardens outside are really nice, lots of room for children to play safely and dogs too. It is just outside of the city centre in York, so pleasant. Staff are always nice too, I cannot recommend this pub enough. I seriously hope it'll be my new local soon, moving from another area of York, please visit the Fox for good beers, affordable food and wines and a lively and lovely atmosphere!

Ramp access,but no accessible toilet, so not ideal for customers with mobility issues!!!

Very good beer as it is Ossett, no really much else.

We sat outside on hard bench seats attached to tables of which there were approximately 20 placed in rows. Outside canteen type. Absolutely no attempt to create more intimate spaces or seating. Perhaps some trellises or plant pots arranged creatively? My partner said that the beer was good!

Nice pub, friendly staff. It's a pub where you just want to chill with your family or friends. No loud music or even music. But the thing about this pub, is that when you go inside order your drink sit down, you're already feeling cosy by the interior feature of this traditional pub.

A real neighbourhood pub majoring on beer and good company rather than sports screens, gastro pretensions or vivid cocktails. Still has original 1880s room layouts, fireplaces, lots of character and period decor. Interesting beers, well kept and carefully pulled by helpful staff. I could very easily have stayed all day...

Me encantó este pub desde la primera vez que lo visité, un personal amable, excelentes cervezas Ossett, y también comencé a hacer pizzas al horno de piedra en una furgoneta de visita, que son fabulosas. Bebedores adecuados y pub socializante.

En cuanto a los alimentos, otro crítico mencionó que hacen pasteles de cerdo, aunque no necesariamente los tienen en un momento dado. No vayas con el apetito esperando comida, porque no lo hacen. Sin embargo, como pub de bebedores, tiene muy buenos seguidores y parece ser muy popular. Fue restaurada por la cervecería hace unos 4 años, pero afortunadamente aún conserva la sensación de un pub tradicional. En el verano, entiendo que a veces tienen un evento de barbacoa en el jardín, así que en ese caso sí, hay comida disponible. Le doy 5 estrellas, excepto que, el día que visitamos, había estado lloviendo y había un enorme charco de aproximadamente 2 pulgadas de profundidad que ocupaba alrededor de 1/3 del pequeño aparcamiento, que estaba muy lleno. Literalmente, solo quedaba un espacio de estacionamiento que no requería ventanillas para salir del auto, y las pocas filas están tan cerradas que se necesitó un poco de esfuerzo para estacionarse. En serio, Ossett necesita resolver ese nivel en el estacionamiento, porque con la cantidad de lluvia que estamos teniendo, si nos congelamos, podría convertirse en una gigantesca pista de hielo y habrá gente cayendo. Tampoco hay muchas alternativas para estacionar, así que si llegara a ese punto, me gustaría encontrar otro pub en lugar de arruinar un par de zapatos que vadean un cuerpo de agua de ese tamaño. Lo siento, no puedo caminar ni andar en bicicleta allí, pero aquellos de nosotros con problemas de movilidad tenemos que usar 4 ruedas; Y no soy el único, estoy seguro.

It's probably unfair to give this pub 5 stars as I've been visiting this place for 15 years or so and it has undergone many changes, owners and refurbishments. It's my dad's second home. But in all those years it has remained a favourite and each new owner has only improved it. It's a large pub, but with different sections consisting of a traditional Saloon, lounge and snug bar. There is a great back garden which is nice in the summer and a glass conservatory.

Little gem of a drinking pub and massive beer garden that often has live entertainment or events on.

I always like to have a drink here when in York. It's an Ossett Brewery outlet, however it always has an excellent range of guest beers as well as draft ciders to tempt you to spend longer than you had hoped! The beers are well kept and served in good condition. Staff are knowledgeable, friendly and welcoming. Even better, they are quick to notice when a beer is running out so you never have to query whether there's anything wrong with it! They have a large garden, so ideal for families in the Summer. They also do a good range of locally produced pork pies to snack on.

We often pop into The Fox after work or on a lunch break... (for a cola obviously) and it's always nice to see friendly staff working hard. Good beers all round and a great selection for everyone. Very big beer garden so great for summer and warmer evenings and days. The pub has kept all it's original features so there's somewhere for someone. Highly recommend. J

I’ve been going here on and off for many years. Good atmosphere and a good selection of drinks. Beer garden is also excellent.

This is a lovely local pub with great staff and lots of different rooms to choose from depending on your group. Always a changeable and good selection of ales although it does not do food , only bar snacks . The Fox has a great history and a large beer garden for better days and a decent size car park too.

This has become our regular pub. It's fab for a pint and catch up with friends, and it is even. Sitter in the summer when the large beer garden can be used! If you like a drink and snacks it's a great place to meet with friends.

I visited here with family on a Saturday evening and enjoyed several real ales in The Fox. Great pub with a great selection of real ales.

Very nice pub. Large garden and events are held at various times throughout the year. Drinks are a little pricey. A reasonable range of different drinks.

We stopped off on the way through Leeds yesterday and enjoyed a fantastic Sunday lunch. My better half actually decorated the Roundhay Fox a while back and always wanted to visit again, and now I know why. Very fresh, tasty food. Absolutely lovely veggie Sunday lunch with a beautiful cheese tart and wonderful gravy. Deceptive portion too we both struggled to finish it and my partner's turkey was first class. We had all the trimmings too, and Lloyd who served us was brilliant. Despite the restaurant being incredibly busy, he tried very hard to offer a personal service, which was appreciated. Our only complaint was it was a little cold, but then again it was absolutely bitter outside. Lovely meal, we would love to dine again should we be in Leeds at any point.

This is my local many of us were frightened we'd loose it .an old tethers heritage pub that served the carriage works that closed. Ossett Brewary has preserved it's heritage and tte Landlady and staff make it a special pub for the locals

Pub con algunos increíbles habitaciones poco. Un lugar muy bonito en antigua. Encantadora decoración. Aparte de la horrorosa papel fox terriblemente en los aseos. caza Cómo horrible puede conseguir. Pub hubiera sido perfecto sin esta huelga, toque horrible!! De lo contrario, buena selección de ale....

confortable establecimiento bien llevado, muy bien reformado y tradicional, bien merece la pena una visita alrededores pintorescos

El zorro es un auténtico pub pub tiene alrededor de 10 cervezas de barril de la cervecería Ossett micro cervecería y hay una buena atmósfera y un gran jardín de la cerveza para el verano. Lo único malo es que sólo hacer tarta de cerdo y patatas fritas para la comida. Si te gusta un concurso fo de un jueves pero ten cuidado no es simple.

Pub close to our hotel. Staff very friendly. A good old fashioned atmosphere that you don't always get in the modern pubs. A good selection of ales. We got chatting to some regulars which made our evening more enjoyable.

Excellent hostelry with a tremendous range of ales and ciders with keen and friendly staff. This was my first visit but will definitely be back. Highly recommended.
