The fox in South Cambridgeshire

I have check back and it was ten years and one month since I last visited the Fox. I was quite scathing. However, things have very much changed and for the better. The staff are lovely, friendly and chatty and the place was very clean and tidy with some lively pub jokes on the wall inside and out. The food was great my only point is the fish was smaller than others in the area, but it was haddock, not cod, like others. Over all I would return and recommend The Fox to others.

Very friendly staff worth their weoght in gold and the food was worth the money. Clean pub and a variety to choose from.

Friendly staff, nice atmosphere, and (of course!) excellent food. The food vans outside (on Friday's and Saturday's) are a really nice addition as well. Looking forward to many more visits!

Went in on Halloween for the trick or treat night, the staff was amazing they treated the kids to sweets and their costumes where spot on, we had an a family chip shop for tea and it was only £19.99 which was fantastic the kids loved it. Can wait for the Christmas party now

This place is so dirty the tables aren't cleaned everything is filthy. It's obvious the food is cooked by a glorified microwave, my order was wrong and the only answer I could get out of the un trained staff is "I don't know" left be honest close the kit he'd and just serve alcohol you cut mess fhat up really.

Cons - empty pub with no atmosphere Cons - food was bad. 2 of us had “trios of meats” which was so dry it was inedible. My other 2 family members had the mushroom and Stilton Wellington. This was underdone. (We do not recommend ordering food here!) Pros - the waitress was lovely and talkative Pros - food came out quickly Pros - prices were not bad Pros - somewhat clean Overall, I would not come here again. More effort needs to be made with the food.

The kitchen was absolutely shambolic waited more than an hour and witnessed seeing our order being pushed to the back of the queue even though it was the first oder

I had a hankering for fish and chips but I don’t have a huge appetite. I was delighted to find I could have a small portion. Service was slow so it was freshly cooked and gave us time to drink to my husband’s birthday. Very pleasant staff. A nice afternoon and the fish was delicious!

Nice Sunday lunch at a fair price with friendly staff. Been going here on and off for more than twenty years, has changed hands many times with good results.

Lee was very welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. The food was hot, tasty and very reasonably priced. Very enjoyable experience.

Brilliant food atmosphere friendly staff am having a birthday party there this month.Its not a special but a lovely getogether with friends on the village.

Firstly we arrived we stood at the door and she shouted from the bar find yourself a table and i will come see to you, we seated ourselves (that lady never see to us someone else did) , ordered drinks brought to table by hand not on a tray so two jobs when it could have been one job, ordered food asked a few questions avout the food which the waitress couldnt answer or wasnt sure which she should have known very poorly trained staff , brought drink over with ice didnt even ask if wanted ice or not, left dirty tables as was too busy talking to other customers , one didnt wear mask, when asking for bill never asked if wanted to pay cash or card just brought card machine over didnt offer a receipt once paid dodnt say thankyou just went to other tables , communication very poor they were not very friendly seemed like they did not want us there seemed very rude, noticed a staff member hugging a customer not very professional, maybe need to think of training the staff more or getting rid of the staff and getting more trained staff. Only good part was food was lovely couldnt fault that.

We went to The Fox for lunch and the first drink I had since early November so looking forward to a pint. The pub is covid secure, hand sanitiser on all tables, NHS covid login as you arrive and face masks worn. Ther is an app to order drinks and food but the staff were so attentive we didn't need to use it. The food is all homemade even the chips which were just like my Grandma used to make and the food was very good. Unfortunately the pub is hampered by previous reputations which are now unfounded. If you are in the area give it a go I am sure you won't be disappointed. Thanks for a great visit we will be back soon. Merry Christmas

We popped by here today for lunch as we we were in the area, and it looked like a nice enough pub. Firstly, there is a massive sign saying ‘Please WAIT to be seated’. So we waited... Three tables taken in the pub at best. Red haired lass is talking to some chaps sat down. General chit chat. She saw us, we were ignored and she continued her conversation. A CUSTOMER then come over and told us to sit ourselves down and the staff would come to us once we were sat. My partner wanted to go there and then but I said let’s stay, order a drink and see how it goes. I order a lemonade and orange juice. She comes back with her concoction which was at best an 8th orange juice and remainder lemonade. I ask her to do it again, with way more orange juice as it was disgusting to the point I thought she’s used orange squash. She comes back, this time too much orange and too little lemonade but I didn’t want to upset her or come across as a difficult customer so said it was ok. Not the end of the world. I did ask her if she’d ever made one before and she said no, and I did try and chit chat to make her feel a bit better having felt bad complaining.We then order and food arrives about 30 minutes later (bare in mind there is about three tables in) ... Steak and a fish and chips. My partner requested medium rare, to which he received rare verging on blue. Having already requested change of drink and not being in the best of moods from the ‘greeting’ he wasn’t going to say anything but I could physically see him struggling to eat it. I request the waiter over to which my partner asks how the steak looked. Waiter replies, ‘rare’. At that point my partner expressed being thoroughly annoyed at this point and sent the entire dish back. Mood is so soured at this point he didn’t want a change of dish and nibbled at mine. Another few points, chips were gross and hard and the onion rings made with red onion???? Mushy peas which were ‘minted’, yes massive chunks of mint. The fish was ok. In fairness, they didn’t charge us for the meal nor the drinks after the waiter phoned his manager who was not on duty. No manager on duty? Again, odd. Perhaps with a manager about the pub would have been running a bit smoother? The waitress doesn’t know her pleases and thank you’s, and it was very hard remaining polite when you aren’t getting that service yourselves.Honestly one of the worst meals in a long time, spoons microwaves do a better job.

Firstly all Covid-19 guidelines followed and felt totally safe here. Clearly explained that they were only able to take cash, which wasn't an issue. Anyway, as the title suggests, this was our first visit to the fox, and it definitely will not be the last. Lager not over priced which is always a good start. Now the food. Simple. It was amazing. Absolutely get value for money undeniably. The missus had the bacon/chicken/lettuce/tomato toasted sarnie which was a triple decker with a good portion of healthy looking salad. I thought I'd try a few things so went for some grazers. Southern fried chicken and gravy was light, fresh and warming. Meatballs in the most amazing sauce. Halloumi fries again fresh and tasty. And then the homemade sausage rolls. Soooo tasty, a absolute delight. If I had any niggle, and believe me, this is tiny. But the meat to pastry ratio was wrong. I would reduce the meat down so that there can be 5 instead of 4, without affecting your overheads. That being said, deciding to eat here was a great decision, and set us up for the rest of the day. Amazing food, service very polite and professional, clean premises. Only wish I had taken some pictures to add to this review. Well done everyone at the fox.

By no means is The Fox serving up gourmet food, however, it was better than we imagined it would be. The dishes we had were satisfying and more than filling, yet, I would question the macaroni cheese’s price tag of 4.45 GBP given the small bowl it was presented in (and also had microwave style vibes).On the other hand, the Pravha beers come in at 3.75 GBP per pint, which is very good value. The falafel burger is just okay but the steak and ale pie had plentiful meat hidden inside, and was juicy too.All in all, if you come to The Fox, you know what you’re embarking on: middle of the road ‘pub grub’.

Nice friendly waitress, socially distanced seating. Food reasonably priced and plentiful. Varied menu selection. Very quiet lunchtime, but understand it's busier in the evening. Not fine dining but good for a lunchtime .

I have always been a regular in The Fox and this is the first time I have visited since lockdown. It is well set up and the staff especially Scott and Shannon are very helpful and efficient. I was welcomed with a big smile and they both asked me if I was alright ....Lovely to be back .Thank you guys

Very quiet pub had a lovely chill and drinks in here before heading out for the night. They do events night too but that was on the Friday.

Having heard varying reports we decided to give it a go. It was quiet due to the time of day on a weekday so we had lots of choice of where to sit. I agree that the place could do with a spruce up , it was looking dark and a bit scruffy but we were determined to give it a chance, and Im glad we did. The food was lovely, freshly prepared , very nicely presented and very reasonably priced. The barmaid/waitress , Shannon, was lovely . We were made to feel very welcome and really enjoyed our visit. We will definitely be going back. Thanks !

This is an ideal location for someone to transform the Fox into a fabulous local “ bistro pub” , however the owners have not taken the opportunity to invest in the place and hence the decor is tired and outdated, and consequently the staff are not motivated into giving good service. The food is average at best and therefore the place is often only occupied by local drinkers. The atmosphere is not conducive to a “family meal” or even an intimate “ couples” meal, which is a shame. There is a carvery on Sunday, but not well attended as food quality only average. Conclusion, ok for a drink , but would not go back to eat as it’s nothing special.

I have been visiting this establishment for a few years and it has got worse and worse. The food is not worth the money. On my last visit I ordered my meal and my friend ordered a jacket potato with beef chilli and cheese, minus any beef! It was a chilli sauce with a few kidney beans in it, and that was after waiting for over an hour for it, even though there were very few people eating on that day.When we spoke to the staff that he wasn't happy with what they had presented they looked totally shocked that I had complained, and said no refund would be given as there was "nothing wrong" with it, and said its the same chilli beef as they always have served, which is not true as we had that there before and it was nowhere close to what it should look like. The next excuse was that it was "very finely ground" beef, it must have been so finely ground that I would have needed a microscope to see it.The rest of the food was bought out and dumped on the table and the staff left us to it. But that's not all, my meal came with "house coleslaw" which resembled something that a cat had thrown up. I foolishly tried it and nearly had my head blown off, it was made with pure horseradish sauce!! Never in my all of my years have I ever come across coleslaw made with that! It was awful. I can safely say that I will not be returning to that place.

Visited here regularly for the past 5 years and nothing has improved, once again another very dry sandwich with no butter/margarine in sight. Chips were very over cooked to the point where they were in edible, and the gammon was in edible too. Go down the road to swavesey services, mc donalds even serve better food than here and much cheaper too.

Visited this pub with twelve other like minded persons. Friendly staff, clean premises great and good pub food; well prepared and presented. All our meals came out within five minutes of each other’s so we could eat together. Not a bad word said about any of the meals. It is a bit rough and ready but it’s a good rough and ready, we will be returning without a doubt.

Tucked in front of Tesco's Bar Hill is the pub/family restaurant The Fox. We chose this place because it was across the road from our hotel and we didn't want to pay hotel bar prices! The place looked a little dated and was poorly lit inside. We went there late afternoon and we were one of handful of customers in there. We ordered one of their special offers which included either a soft a drink or a pint. We both ordered cheese burger and chips and a pint and we had approx. 15 min wait, so probably would have taken longer if they were busier! The burger was very thick but cooked well, the side salad was dry and the coleslaw was too thick 'n' creamy and tasteless but on the whole we enjoyed our meals and drink.

Went at lunchtime with my husband and two children.After ordering at the bar, we waited over 40 minutes for our food. Starters and mains were brought together. We decided to live with it and had to push a second table up to accommodate all the dishes.The prawn cocktail was not great - the prawns were watery and that diluted the sauce. The chilli con carne was served with cold rice and tasted very much like it had been bought as a microwavable from Tescos and inadequately heated. Fajitas were served with cold tortillas and the halloumi fingers were slightly undercooked.Other than the delivery of the food, we never saw a member of staff at the table. We had to go to the bar to request additional table water, and later to pay.

We waited around 40mins for our toastie, ciabatta, and hunters chicken when there were very few customers.

Excellent meal in this pub very well priced and the food was delicious i would return again great for familys with children.

We waited 40 mins for our meal even though there were only 2 other tables occuopied, one with 2 people on it and one with 4. The waiting would have been ok if the food was good, it wasn't. The very small portion of chips were chewy, blackened, shrivelled and cold, the peas were cold and dried up like bullets, the hunters chicken didn't have an sauce in it, the chicken was just warm and very overcooked so not moist at all, very dry, the cheese and bacon wrapped around it looked and tasted like they had been miked. Tried to eat it as we didn't have time to wait for a replacement . Won't be going back.

Three of us popped here for a Sunday lunch. Yes, the place is not luxurious, but then again had a meal at six in Cambridge, and had an awlful meal for the money. For £6.50 I was satisfied what was on offer. Turkey, gammon or beef. Roast/mash potatoes. Carrots, peas, cauliflower, stuffing balls and Yorkshire pudding. The chef gives you the meat of your choice, or all three, and you help yourself to the rest.

We stopped at The Fox while coming off the A14 with a vehicle problems.

If all you want is a cheap pint, a burger and some sport on the telly, this is the place to go.

Looking for a good (not necessarily healthy!) breakfast to start the day, came across this pub offering all you can eat breakfast for £7.49

Popped in for dinner as was staying at nearby hotel. Reasonable prices. Lasagna was very nice but chicken was way over cooked so very tough. Place was very very grubby but to be fair their are a lot of building works going on very close by.

Found this on a journey back a while ago We tend to stop here as it is way better than Cambridge Services, Tesco is next door as is Tesco Fuel. OK we were travelling Sunday so opted for small carvery each, The place can get busy, you kinda have to order, get a drink and sometimes await a table. OK that is not always the best, but it really did not take any time. They do replace the veg very regularly as opposed to loading the veg "cart" up so it gets either cold or dry. The meat was a choice of Beef,Gammon,Turkey I chose Beef Turkey Wife Ham Turkey. A Good range of veg that had just been put out, Carrots, Broccoli, Caulliflower Cheese, Roasties,peas, Mashed 'taters with cheese which was very nice, the usual stuffing, Yorkshire and all that stuff, ours was hot and fresh .....For the price the meal was good meat succulent not dry

Arrived 18:00ish, ordered food at 18:04. At 18:35 asked where was our food and was told that due to a problem it was just being plated up. Food arrived at 18:46 with an apology and an offer of a free drink. When we declined the drinks, waitress said she would consult the manager to see what he might offer. Neither she nor the manager came back. We left at about 19:25.

Absolutely amazing carvery for £6.50 Meat selection was turkey gammon beef Mash, roast potatoes, carrots peas , broccoli cauliflower sprouts Yorkshire pud and stuffing For £6.50 it is lovely The meat is cut thickly and is beautifully cooked Well worth the money

Noticed it was close to tesco and various outlets so gave it a try . Outside signage offers lunchtime specials . However due to menu change there was a printed A4 short menu inside .. Was not busy and pub overall is showing wear and tired . There was a 20 min wait for food even though there was only 7 or 8 people in this large bar . Heard several people complaining and thought this does not bode well . However when our food arrived we were pleasantly surprised. Food was presented well and piping hot . We had a curry and was one of the best curries we’ve had inexpensive .

Went here with 3 friends before checking into a nearby hotel. As soon as we walked through the door, the smell of cannabis was very strong! Not an amazing first impression. Went to the bar and was served 4 flat cokes, these were returned and we had to wait while the gas was changed.

I work locally and visit this at leas once a week. Has been a bit up and down over the years but much better recently, especially the range of ales.

Staff were rude, unhelpful. Food came out wrong so had to wait for the right food. Food was burnt and not what it was on the menu. Food was burnt and could`nt eat any of it as it as it was awful. I would like some money back with it. Tables were dirty, sticker. Food took ages to come out and food came out at different times sop everyone food was cold. I would never ever go back here again. I do not know how they are running restaurant.

We were pleasantly surprised when we stopped here recently! Staff were really welcoming and friendly. There is a good choice on the menu. Our meals were really good - there wasn't anything we were disappointed with. The prices are great too - a cheap eat, but in a good way! We're looking forward to returning! I would recommend a visit.

We had the carvery. I am coeliac and also vegan so dinning out can be difficult. The Irish gentleman on the phone (we called in advance) couldn't have been more helpful and the waitress kind and helpful also. They got me additional veg and made up a gluten vegan gravy I brought in. Five stars, very didn't see my allergy or being vegan as an issue or make me feel a burden. Will certainly go back, they chef was also helpful. Lovely.

Worst tea I’ve had all year. “Large” chicken wa size of a rat and it tasted like a dried old minge. Chef must be a moron. Least there’s nice views in outside seating area.....

Manager recovered the situation well after a disappointing experience with staff member and chicken the size of a pigeon. Not up to usual standard.

Went for an evening meal on a Saturday and really enjoyed our visit. Very good food and helpful friendly staff. Pub was pretty much empty in terms of cusotmers we probably saw less than a dozen other customers all evening.

Visited last Friday, had a great Steak Fajita, went back on Sunday for a roast-probably the best Beef I’ve ever had! Just £6.50!! Two brilliant dinners and a great price, could not fault either, we were staying at a nearby hotel and the food was no where near as good and a lot more expensive. You will not be disappointed with your food and price.

Having read some earlier reports about The Fox we were unsure but glad that we tried it for ourselves. We called in for some lunch on the Friday and as we were staying at a nearby hotel we came back for dinner the next evening. Good size portions at sensible prices. Varied wine selection also with sensible prices. Warm & friendly reception.

Not many people in and the aircon was on full pelt. It was freezing in there. 40 minutes wait for very average meal. The whole place looked grubby and unloved. Won’t be back.

I never hope for much when ordering steak in normal pubs, it avoids disappointment. But the steak tonight a Rib eye so not the cheapest piece of meat on the menu, well if I said it was barely edible I would say that’s pretty accurate! It was tasteless and over cooked I will never eat here again.

Dirty glasses, over cooked and badly cooked food , ceiling falling down, indescribable dessert. Would I eat there again, no there's a McDonald's and kfc just up the road.

Parked up in my truck nearby & needed to chill out for a while. The Fox is ideally situated just near the Tesco. Very friendly & chirpy staff. Alcohol isn’t overly expensive & “Shannon” knows her way around the bar to compliment what’s available to drink & eat. I’ll be sure to call back soon

Stayed at the hotel, thought we would try a local pub, music to loud, and wasn't made welcome, thought there might of been more variety of ales and beers, just not for me.

Great value for money as they offer 2 main meals for £10.00 Good choices and recommend the vegetable lasagne.

we went here for a family meal whilst visitng relatives on easter saturday, on arrival we were told they were unsure if they would be serving any food as they had problems with staffing, whilst waiting we played a game of pool and it wasn't until a family member noticed that someone was ordering food did we find out that food was available, NO member of staff bothered to come over and inform us they were actually serving food, if we hadn't noticed another customer we would have simply up and left.

Great breakfast in the fox. Well worth a visit, clean and tidy. Hot freshly cooked breakfast, unlimited tea and coffee all at a low cost; looking forward to my next visit.

My husband had a meeting in Cambridge so we decided to go with him and spend the day in Cambridge while we were waiting for him to finish. After he has finished with his work we looked for the nearest place to have something to eat as we were all starving so we went to this pub. There was two men behind the bar: a bald one and one with glasses. No menus were given to us but it was ok, as we already knew what we waned to order as we checked the menu online. We ordered drinks and food from the bald gentleman who was not overly friendly but ok. Then the other man in glasses came to clear our plates, he was very uninterested and walked off. We decided to have some desserts and another drink so I went to the bar to order. This man in the glasses was behind the bar at this point and when I arrived to the bar I already could see on his face that he didn’t want me to be there and I was a pain for him for trying to order something. He came over to me and I asked for two desserts and a drink, he made a very unpleasant face towards me and said to me that the kitchen is closing between 4-5pm, so he was not sure if I was still able to order. The time was 4:40. Well it doesn’t say anywhere that the kitchen closes between 4-5pm, and even if it did I could not see what is soooo difficult about heating up in the microwave a chocolate chip cookie and a slice of fudge cake... anyway he went to the back to double check it for me and he came out and he kinda looked annoyed as he had to take me dessert and drink order. After all we got the desserts and I took my drink to our table my son met another boy and started to paly with him and running around the pub very laudly. It was very disturbing but having that very uncomfortable experience when I clearly felt we were unwanted guests there I just could not be bothered to tell him off or stop him from doing that. As I work in catering and hospitality I know how annoying the running and shouting kids are and I always make sure my son would never do that. But after our experience I was kinda happy that my son gave a little headache to the barmen at least a bit. Unfortunately the guests experienced that as well, but well... anyway this arrogant barman left at 5pm so I took my son and we left. By the way, another family arrived just like a good 10-15 mins before we left (their son started to paly with mine in the pub) and they got food menus (the same one we ordered from) and they had not been told anything about the closing kitchen... they arrived after we were told the kitchen is closing and our dessert order was just a big pain to send through, but they still got menus and were just fine to order food... it clearly shows that the barman had problem with us. Well all I can say that this is disgusting to treat guests like we were treated, and ur staff needs a huge customer service training!!!
