The Fountain Inn & Riverside Restaurant in West Devon

Took advantage of the sunday carvery offer, 2 for £20.... I'd never been here before,despite being local. Was served by a young girl who was polite, helpful and welcoming. The food was really nice, just a shame they'd run out of Yorkshire puddings! We would definitely come again. Very good value for the money and the added bonus was no washing up!! Actually a really nice pub, nicely decorated nice atmosphere and nice service... Many thanks and hope to see you soon!

During my recent stay at this hotel, I encountered a blend of pros and cons that made the experience a mixed bag. Here’s a breakdown of what stood out: Parking: The parking situation was useful, but incredibly tricky and tight. Navigating the car park was a real challenge, especially for larger vehicles. If you're driving a big car, be prepared for some stressful parking maneuvers. Room and Beds: The beds were on the smaller side, but still relatively comfortable, though a bit firm. I wouldn’t call them luxurious, but they were decent enough for a short stay. Given that I stayed in mid-September, I can't comment on the room temperature or how well the heating/cooling works. WiFi: The WiFi was a significant letdown. With speeds barely reaching 1.5 Mbps, it was a struggle to even check emails, let alone stream anything or work remotely. If you need reliable internet access, this could be a dealbreaker. Bathroom: This was, by far, the worst aspect of the stay. The bathroom looked like it had been installed by an amateur or a child, with substandard workmanship throughout. The sealant around the tub was mouldy, and the showerhead was dusty with black mould and limescale. The worst part? When using the sink, the shower drain would backflow, which is both disgusting and inconvenient. To add to the misery, the macerating toilet made an annoyingly loud noise every time it was flushed, although it functioned. You could also hear everything from the room next door, from conversations to movement, making it hard to relax. To top it off, the ceiling paint was peeling, and the overall fit and finish of the bathroom was the worst I’ve ever encountered. Conclusion: While the beds were tolerable and the location convenient, the subpar WiFi and the abysmal state of the bathroom made this stay difficult to enjoy. If you can overlook the bathroom issues and don’t need fast internet, it might suffice for a short visit, but I’d think twice before returning.

This is a really nice place to stay. 4 of us in two rooms, which were clean, comfortable and so good we decided to stay a further night. All the staff were efficient, friendly and made us all feel very welcome. The bars areas and outside decking were filled with friendly locals and visitors alike. Great atmosphere and very well stocked bar. The breakfasts were excellent too. All in all, a faultless experience. I will definitely come stay again.

Stayed for 1 night on way to Cornwall. Nice looking pub with parking. Bedroom was fine apart from a faint stale smell, which on further inspection was probably down to no mattress covers, which is basic hotel management. The evening meal was ok apart from reheated potato mash. Breakfast good. Mostly friendly staff.

VERY DISAPPOINTED. The hotel had no hot water to wash or shower.... Seems other reviews have said the same too. Smelly of drains too, but were told it was because the hotel was next to the river. Small room, bit smelly and no hot water - but management not interested and blamed it on being a 16th Century hotel (guessing the boiler isn't 16th century though.....). Rude email responses and refusing any discount, partial refund or compensation - saying it's just one of those things... AVOID IF YOU CAN.

Came here on the back of a recommendation from a local and was left disappointed. Pros: The place has a classic British pub atmosphere which is warm and friendly. The food we had was decent in quality and quantity. Cons: The service was way too slow. It took over an hour to receive our starter and at one point we were told our starter was 5 mins away but it took 20 mins from then to recieve it. The staff did their best to keep us happy even offering us a complimentary dessert which was appreciated. Otherwise this probably would be a 2 star rating. In conclusion there are better choices to dine in in Okehampton.

We enjoyed a lovey lunch here. Dog friendly and serves lunch til 3pm. Lovely friendly staff and great food all enjoyed in a charming garden setting.

We stayed in room 1 (located in the loft) during a very warm extended weekend. The fan provided helped circulate air but the noise from the restaurant extractor was frustrating. The shower room needs decorative attention and they wanted to charge us for bottled water on day two - which I think is bonkers. A basic and poor customer service slip. The evening meal we had was overpriced, so I recommend a short stroll to the local Spoons for a quick, consistent vfm menu. That being said, their cooked to order breakfast was on point and the morning staff were friendly. Overall, a very average stay so I hope they improve service for those that follow.

Cracking pub. Good selection of drinks at a reasonable price. Food very tasty and presented to a high standard and they always have specials available. Staff very welcoming and always go the extra mile. Special thanks to Ash, Lucy and Jimmy who made the visit so pleasant.

Stayed 2 nights in January 2024. Room was clean, bed was comfortable. Had supper in the pub on the first night which was ok, although the beer (Landlord) wasn’t well kept. First disappointment was no breakfast on offer, but I was told there was a cafe down the road. True, but as I was wandering around Okehampton at 8am, I found the cafe didn’t open until 10am, so I returned to my room and just had coffee. Second disappointment was that my room wasn’t made up or replenished for my second night, so I didn’t even have any milk for my coffee the next morning! Also, a bin in the bathroom would be a very useful addition.

The wife and I attended the Fountain inn in Okehampton on Sunday 28th January we were served by Lucy it was quite busy and she seemed under pressure but coped. We had roast beef which was beautifully cooked and piping hot. The Yorkshire puddings were amazing we will be back don’t change a thing.

Amazing place! We stayed the night and had food and drinks and I couldn’t recommend enough. Food was beautiful, service was out of this world. Never been made to feel so welcome! The rooms were beautiful, nice and clean. The cleanest place we’ve ever stayed. Would highly recommend to anyone.

Came to this place with my family for a roast on Sunday and what can I say this place stunning, the staff were very friendly and nothing seemed like too much hassle. I really enjoyed my food as did my family and it was reasonably priced at £13. Very filling and a good choice deserts for afters which I really enjoyed. Took the children in the garden and a lovely pond with some stunning fish.

Rip off. What a shame- beautiful old building which is wasted on the people who currently run it. It was like Fawlty Towers there yesterday with problem after problem from mix ups with the prices that were advertised, to mix ups with the order, to cold food which had to be reheated. My partner had a Caesar Salad which tasted nice, he said, but was not a big portion and was twenty quid. I had a beef Sunday Roast which was completely without flavour. Would have given this zero stars but had to give it one so I could put this review on. Extremely bad experience- won't be returning.

I am actually fuming with this pub! I have never written a trip advisor in my life but I am absolutely disgusted with the way I was treated! I am no angel and I will not be portray myself to be. But I was removed from the premises by ashleigh hambelton after I had explained a situation I'd had in a previous pub a few months ago, took it out of context and proceeded to say loudly that I offer sexual services for a bottle of wine and accused me of saying the word "cock" when actually I had said "clock" You can tell people he works with are scared of him as not one person stood up for me! Possibly in fear of also being removed or losing their job! I believe now they will reply to this portraying me to have been in the wrong and that's fine but actually I needed to have my say as the owner wouldn't even face me to hear my side of the story but just walked away when I asked him to speak to me! If you don't have customer service skills you shouldn't be in a customer facing job.

Been here for lunch and enjoyed it, this time was the first time here for an evening meal. It is fabulous. gorgeous food, very friendly and helpful staff, great atmosphere. Hunters chicken is to die for, my friends burger was huge and he loved it. And the white chocolate mud pie is fantastic. Will be back soon.

Friendly service, excellent food. We went for Christmas dinner after booking a break nearby for the Christmas holidays. After a very stressful year it was the perfect choice. Food was great and the service impeccable. Felt like being at home even though we were a couple of hundred miles away! Would highly recommend.

Not happy at all! Me and my partner booked 2 nights at the Fountain Inn. We went for food the first night at the fountain Inn, we were served by Ben who was so polite and lovely. 10/10 food aswell! Room 4 on the other hand wasn’t so pleasant. The shower door is broken, toilet when flushed makes a massive noise and no heating in the room either (no so fussed about the heating though), slight cracking on the walls in the bathroom and loads of dust on the top of the shower head which I was very disturbed by. Overall it wasn’t a bad stay, we just wouldn’t go back in room 4. So we wanted to swap rooms and stay for another 3 nights, so I went down to reception and asked the lady if this was possible as me and my partner had seen room 6 was available online for the next week. Unfortunately the lady with brown hair rudely said that the room smelt of cannabis, which me and my partner have never smoked cannabis in our lives!!! I felt so embarrassed, all there customers sitting down drinking at the time looked over and she had made me look like a right fool! False accusations of your customers buying at the place you work is highly out of order and I will not be recommending this hotel to anyone! Like I said though food is lovely and good for the price. Unfortunately we will never be staying here again!

Family of 14 including 2 children Absolutely superb Sunday carvery plenty of choice of meat and veg all cooked perfectly, the meat was so tender. Staff were attentive and friendly, delicious desserts. Definitely recommend.

What a fantastic place, hidden gem. We popped in, a bit late, as we couldn't get any good anywhere else with a dog in tow. They had just stopped serving but the chef cooked for us regardless and the food was fantastic. All the staff cheery, happy and fun to talk with, and service was fantastic. Highly recommend a visit.

We were recommended this pub by a local shop owner. We sat outside which was great given the September heatwave! We were offered the main menu but we only wanted a light lunch. The waiter talked to the chef and we were offered a lighter menu and had a fantastic jacket potato filled with delicious prawns. Highly recommend this friendly and adaptable pub.

Nice pub, nothing wrong with the service but the food was disappointing, my chicken burger was very salty, my partners moussaka was baked snd stuck to the dish, very small portion for £16.

Myself and my partner stayed here with our 9 month old Labrador, Doug. We used it as a one night stop off on our way to Newquay, but I wish we’d have stayed longer than one night! Super dog friendly and welcoming hotel & bar. Ash was amazing and super helpful which made our stay even more lovely. The room we stayed in was very comfortable and breakfast was spot on. Lovely pub, genuinely friendly staff, good parking etc - but unbelievably slow service. Went there by chance with my partner and daughter on a Bank Holiday Monday, the restaurant appeared to be about half full - but it took a full hour from sitting down to getting our food. It was all just families and small groups in there, no reason for it that I could see. Shame because it was a nice place, but I wish I'd kept driving Wouldn't go back, certainly not for food anyway

Took over an hour to get our food from ordering. When it arrived it was poor quality, the chicken was tough and over cooked. The seafood had no sauce to dip the over fried prawns and squid. The belly pork was not crispy it had just been heated up. All the dishes had no garnish and overall it looked like a very inexperienced cook had made our meal. Maybe they where just short of staff. But this evening was not worth the money. Very disappointing.

Went here for my husbands birthday, such a warm welcome from the lovely barman..the food was amazing, best tzatziki and moussaka I’ve had outside of Greece! Will most definitely be returning again soon.

Great venue with easy access and parking, very dog friendly with great places to sit and eat outside and be undercover if needed. Staff are all great and made us all feel very welcome, our visit happened during a menu change so could only have the roast that day - it was satisfactory but the option of a full menu being available would have been more preferable. However if in the area and looking for a place to have and few drinks and a meal you would not be disappointed with this venue.

We stayed a night in June in the hotel and had an exceptional experience. The owners were on holiday and Ash checked us in and checked everything was OK. It is a very popular pub and restaurant with outdoor seating areas and a choice of areas inside. Our room was on the top floor and was very clean and comfortable with a modern en suite. A bit small but perfectly adequate. The breakfast was amazing, the best full English I can remember! It is an outstanding pub, restaurant and hotel but its the staff that give it the edge. They were all friendly and helpful. Highly recommended.

Walked past this place a few times and it always looked very inviting, today we were looking for somewhere for lunch so we thought we’d give it a try. Weren’t disappointed. Clean and well presented inside whilst maintaining its old pub charm. Young man on duty at the bar was friendly. I had the Stilton ploughman’s, my husband had the crab ploughman’s. Both were really delicious, fresh and mine came with a generous slab of cheese. Will definitely come back, hopefully for a full evening meal one day soon.

Total bill was £20.The food came out after a reasonable wait which means it was freshly made and was hot and very tasty, quality was excellent and the amount was more than enough.It was a vast improvement on the last time we went. Clean, great gin bar and lovely atmosphere.It’s a great find, we will be back here again, highly recommended and with most mains priced at the £6-£9 mark then great value!
