If you’re in the area, please do visit The Fountain Head Inn at Branscombe, an atmospheric and welcoming local. We had a delicious meal here in this friendly pub on the first evening of an Autumn break - in our newly acquired camper van - me, the wife and our elderly spaniel. We returned to our campsite much later that evening (about 1/3rd mile away up the hill), let the dog out for one last widdle, and just like that, he disappeared into the night. We spent the next two hours searching and calling for him to no avail. We had no option other than to go to bed, rise early and re-launch our search. Our first call was to the campsite owners, who told my wife they had received a call from the pub saying that they had our spaniel. It seemed that our dog had decided our old camper van accommodation fell short of his expected standards and had returned down the hill to The Fountain to book himself a room for the night. The publicans had recognised him from earlier and tried to find us on the campsite; having failed, they put him up for the night and gave him breakfast. They would accept no offer of payment so we decided that the best idea was to post this message thanking them for going to so much trouble on our behalf - it’s very much appreciated.

Lovely, friendly pub. The food was good and the beer was equally good! We had the soup and cheesy chips....delicious. Prices couldn't be faulted...was such a lovely meal, with friendly and helpful staff. Highly recommend.

Beer is kept well. Perfectly cooked steak and good quality ice-cream. Maybe a good idea to put a few grains of rice in the salt pot to prevent the salt being clogged up!! We will be returning soon.🤞

If you want a proper honest village pub then go here. They do not overcharge, are in no way pretentious and are not out to rip you off. Good beer and food like pub food used to be before everyone became a gastronaut. If you want restaurant food go down the road and help St Austell Brewery fill their coffers, if you want a village local pub experience go to the Fountain Head. All in my opinion of course.

Excellent, ignore those who review comparing it with a city centre plastic gastro pub. It's not, they serve proper beer, proper food in a traditional setting with service based upon how you behave!!

This is a pretty pub with lots of character and charm, situated in a picturesque village. It has the potential to be an absolutely amazing venue. It’s a shame then, that the host on the day we arrived wasn’t at all welcoming. Having walked to Branscombe on the coastal path for 3 hours (on a glorious hot Summer day) we had worked up quite a thirst. We arrived at exactly 3 pm to be told (not very politely) that the bar was closed (despite there being a good number of locals in there with drinks). OK, arguably it was our own fault for not checking opening hours and assuming (wrongly) that a pub in a popular tourist area would be open on a Saturday afternoon during the high season. At the same time, the host could have shown some discretion. The published closing time was 3 pm so he could have served us a drink and allowed us to sit outside (which we would have have been happy to do). The pub is licensed to serve all day so we felt it mean spirited to turn us away. We left thirsty and bitter with a distinct feeling that if you are not a local then you are not welcome here. We instead went to the pub down the road, where we received a friendly reception and lovely pint of Branscombe Brewery beer. We’ll only likely return here if there is a change of ownership. What a pity.

Untidy but functional stop on a long walk. No food available at 13.59 on Coronation Sunday; unless of course you were an anointed one, in which case you could be served food at 14.40? (As it happens the cooked food looked mediocre?) Drinks and snacks fine. Very bizarre set up, run down place, wouldn't go out of my way to stop here? Useful loo stop. Just disappointing as it could be a great pub one day?!

The chap who owns the bar was so rude and arrogant. If you don't want customers then don't own a pub! I have never received such poor customer service. He barely spoke, didn't smile, just stared at me and then went off laughing with his chumps a the bar whilst I was making my mind up. The roast dinner was not good either. Gravy was like water, the roast potatoes were not fluffy and crispy and under cooked, the veg was not cooked well, the bee was not tender. It was one of the worst roast dinners and worst pub experiences I have had in a LONG time. What a shame, it is such a pretty spot. I definitely won't be back, and won't recommend. It would seem if you are 'seen as a local' you get great service and a bowl of roasties that are fluffy crispy and look nice. If you are seen as an 'outsider' you are basically treated as such. You will be glad to know I am sure, that we won't be back.

The destination for a windy, occasionally rainy and often slippery jaunt along the coast path and across the trails. We were made very welcome by the host and despite arriving just after opening time, the fire was already lit and the whole pub very cosy. Our food was served quickly and delicious, accompanied perfectly by a couple of fine and foaming pints of ale from the brewery further down the valley.

We thoroughly enjoyed a steak with with chips, not greasy, a generous serving of salad , a whole tomato and plenty of mushrooms. Our food arrived promptly and was served hot. Nobody was asked for their details or contact number, or given the opportunity to leave them, in line with Covid track and trace guidelines for restaurants and pubs. People in the queue were mostly holidaymakers from all over the country, so with a potential to spread things far and wide. At the tables outside there was no control who sat where and no wiping down between different customers. Lovely pub, but we were disappointed with the lack of Covid precautions taken.

We went here to celebrate my wife's birthday. It's a lovely, traditional pub, dog-friendly, but quite small so booking is essential. Absolutely excellent Sunday lunch and very reasonably priced. Don't expect a huge menu selection, but the food is well-cooked and nicely presented and the portions generous. Had the pate to start, then the roast beef whilst my son had the seafood which he pronounced excellent. We like vegetables and here you get a large and interesting selection to accompany the meal. Large, fluffy roast potatoes as well! The 'roulade' for dessert was really good - not cream and meringue, but think more sponge roll with apple and Malibu filling. Good local cider to drink as well.Definitely worth the drive down the narrow lanes to!Perhaps the toilet facilities need a bi of updating and the small car park, especially if you are visiting at night, can be a bit tricky (it's a village with few street lights), but the welcome is warm and friendly and in the winter a proper fire to keep out the chill. Packed with locals which tells you something about the place.

We called here twice. First time for a lunchtime drink and booked a table for next day. Our meal was very good. We love this area because it is so friendly, especially as we had our two dogs with us. we met one lady in the village who said she lived there because of this pub. What better recommend?

Being gf and df am used to just being able to have some vegan and usually steak and chips. The fountain head had four dishes to choose from for me, with salmon, duck and steak all both gf and df. Starters as usual were a problem, but the chef offered to do a beetroot salad for me so I could join the others with a started - so pleased with the flexability. He modified the slamon to offer me sauted potatoes rather than the crushed new potatoes that he had obviously put butter in - the sauted were excellent and fresh.

I had the duck on two occasions. A flavoursome plate of food, prepared to the highest standard, this particular item was in my opinion up to Michelin one star standard

Het eten was ok, de sfeer was vooral de reden om hierheen te gaan. Typisch Engels eten en aankleding. Alsof de tijd heeft stil gestaan. Verder ook heel leuk plaatsje.

An old village pub full of character serving good food. They do a hog roast on a sunday we didn't go but apparently it gets very busy. Is open all day sunday but closes between 3 and 6 not something we used too but you soon relax in this lovely village and get used to the opening times . Definitely worth a visit.

A magnificent pub with first rate service, excellent food and dangerously good ale. I am sorry to have left Branscombe after spending many happy hours eating here with the family or glugging pints of the sensational Branoc beer. Truly outstanding menu which puts the Mason’s to shame despite the excellent pizza we had there. The best pub I have seen in a long time. 11/10 would glug again.

After being disappointed by the Masons Arms, we came to the Fountain Head on the advice on a local person we met, and we were not disappointed. Good food, nice atmosphere, reasonable prices. We walked there, which was also lovely. The Fountain Head is to be recommended!

Went to 2019 beer fest in June, had great time with 3 days of music and beer. Great for dog lovers as they are allowed in. 43 beers, no tasting notes, so you might ask for a sip first. Music was really good, pub food served in side (had a great lasagna ). Outside was festival food of good quality and served all night. Will go again. Lovely people!

This pub is not the easiest place to get to - narrow, twisty lanes, and finding where to park was a bit of a challenge - but well worth the effort. The host is a real extrovert, and he engages with everyone whether locals or visitors. We were made to feel really welcome here. And the atmosphere was exactly what one would hope for in a country pub. The food was excellent. Good varied menu, and a choice of ales. This was a really good evening out in every possible way. If you are in the area, don't miss the opportunity to visit the Fountain Head for a meal.

Met up with an old colleague here, as it was about midway between where we both now live. I have to say that the drive to it was a bit hairy, with the last 10 minutes or so being on a very narrow single track road. And when I got there, it wasn't quite clear where the car park is, so I had to drive through the village, find somewhere to turn (not easy!!) and drive back and around the corner.

I absolutely love this pub. So rustic, full of locals and holiday makers, a good old fashioned pub with a nice ambience, people chatting, laughing and best of all no music, TVs or slot machines. We had a meal in the restaurant, absolutely delicious, I had the veggie option mushroom stroganoff and hubby had John dory fish off the specials board washed down with good quality beer and wine. Cracking location in the picturesque village of Branscombe. Can't wait to go back.

I have responded to the experience questions despite a non visit. My message is based on the fact I was ultimately unable to enjoy the products from my online order, as I appear to be excluded from delivery listings due to the fact I live on a Scottish Island. Whilst understanding of the potential costs involved, perhaps the company could at least offer the option to the customer to cover such...something I would be only happy to oblige with....regardless of the amount David Wilkie Isle of Cumbrae Scotland 07488941692

We had to try the new Sunday lunch menu and we were not disappointed. Roast beef served with roast potatoes, parsnips, carrots, broccoli, cheesy leeks and a proper Yorkshire - not one of those rock hard crispy things restaurants often serve. Followed up with the best freshly cooked Blueberry Bakewell and cream. The staff were friendly and attentive. Thanks very much
