The Flying Shuttle in St Edmundsbury

Food was cold when it came out. Table was pre-booked and I received a text the day before asking to confirm the booking. When we arrived at the place we were not informed that quite a few items on the menu were not available, i.e no roast potatoes, turkey and other items of which I can't remember. I ended up just having roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, which was cold and the beef was like boot leather. We waited over an hour and a half and in that time only 2 starters had come out. We explained this to a member of staff and the response was "and". We had a 4 year old who was getting very hungry and asked if they could at least bring out the children's dinners. The response was " I will have to speak to the kitchen". When the meals did start coming out, it wasn't the children's. The place was not busy at the time. No one enjoyed their meal. We were a party of 10 and was celebrating a birthday. When I paid there was no apology for the delay and no money off offered. We were not even told to have a good evening when we left. We will not be going back

They have a new menu and a week ago I tried their chicken schnitzel ceasar salad with fries on the side Great! Today I ordered the same thing and NO WAY did it resemble anything like the original Either the chef didn’t know what a Caesar salad was ( or a chicken schnitzel) or. Couldn’t care less! My schnitzel was covered in bbq sauce and what looked like mozzarella cheese! The ceasar salad was 3 lettuce leaves and tomato!!!!! The dressing was some clear bitty liquid/ not ceasar dressing! AND no Parmesan cheese. What a total fun up. ! Finally the waitress gave me the bill without 30% discount for mains, Don’t they train their staff?!!

Please don't come here for food. I think all their meat is out of date.

So disappointing! Slapdash meal! Why can’t restaurants take pride in what they put on a plate! Haverhill has no decent restaurants-absolute waste of money!

I am so grateful to be able to find a restaurant that copes with my fussy eating. I swapped various items for others items and you were able to accommodate my wishes. At another previous restaurants my wishes had been refused, saying I had to have what was listed on the menu only. One area that could benefit others more is by having another vegetarian dish on offer. Thank you all.

Lovely local pub, run by really friendly people, always happy to assist with anything you need. Happy to let you leave your car over night if needed ;)

By far the best pub in Haverhill, brilliant service, brilliant food and spectacular customer service. Been coming for years now and will never get tired of it.

Nice food. Service terrible. Bad attitude from young blonde waitress. We waited over half an hour for our table to be cleared & was only cleared once my husband went and asked. Waited absolutely ages for our dessert, and when the waitress came with our desserts, she banged them on the table and said "here's ya tart' and skulked off. Think she needs training in people management. Her attitude needs to be more friendly towards paying customers.

Warm welcome on arrival, manager was polite and courteous as was Jen the lady who served us. Unlike some pubs she was attentive but not over bearing and was always smiling. Food was hot and portions were of a decent size. Overall a very pleasant experience. Will definitely visit again.

We came as a family and weren’t treated too nicely. Our cutlery and napkins were dirty. We then waited an hour for our food. We ordered a ribeye steak to be told that wasn’t available only 30 mins later. Our sirloin steaks came out well done, when we asked for medium. The service and food was really bad. The staff seemed rude and not bothered.

We went for an early dinner and we were greeted by a member of staff with a smile who escorted us to our table, our food was excellent and it was very tasty, all the staff that were allocated to look after us were very helpful and treated us with respect. The Pub/Restaurant and toilets were spotlessly clean. We would like to thank the Manager and all his staff for a very enjoyable time. Regards Johanna

Very good meal reasonably priced

Most of the menu had ran out so nobody could order what they wanted. The party was for a birthday and the persons whose birthday it was is a vegetarian so had almost nothing to eat. I reluctantly ordered a burger which was supposed to come with coleslaw but found out after I got my food that there was no coleslaw either! So I paid full price for a meal which had items missing. My burger was burnt in some places and so were all the Yorkshire puddings that people had. Why do you think it is acceptable to serve visibly burnt food?! The staff were dressed like they were popping down the job centre and lacked the capability to smile. I paid £15 for a main meal which I could have made in my air fryer for a few pounds, and it would have tasted better. Absolutely awful experience. It’s a shame because the restaurant itself looks fairly nice but that is the only thing going for it. I would like to say that it was a one off bad experience but every time I’ve been here it has been the same problems. I was gutted when we were told where we were going because I knew what I was in for. Never again.

Coffee was cold and very watery taste , lamb kofta taste horrible (probably the cheap meatballs from tin will taste better ) calamari like Haribo gummy, fish and chips -yeah chips was ok , desserts -vanilla ice cream - doesn’t taste like vanilla at all,brownie wasn’t good either -we tried lots of pubs ,restaurants and this one was the worst one unfortunately. Quality of food is very poor (well there was lots of elderly people and it looks like they enjoyed) Menus -falling apart and dirty (disgusting 🤢) We spent more than £100 and came back home hungry 🙈 Shame because pub looks very nice and is good location. They should change a food company Next day I woke up with big sore cold on my lips🫣

Delicious Sunday roast. Having sampled most of the Sunday roasts available in establishments around Haverhill over the past 6 months, I can honestly say this has been the most delicious. The thick slices of pork were tasty with crackling that melted in my mouth. The huge yorkshire pudding was beautifully light and just the right amount of rich gravy covered the plate. The roasted carrot, parsnip & potatoes were crispy but tender & fluffy inside. With the peas, green beans & sugar snap peas (declined the red cabbage), the meal looked colourful, appetising and did not disappoint.

Food is a little overpriced, not enough staff, and when it's table service and nobody comes and asks for drinks only once it's not enough. It's always cold, Facebook page showed lovely Christmas decorations unfortunately it was very dull and lacking in festive cheer.

Very poor all round you don’t cough in you hand then have you fingers in food fortunately the food was cold so the waitress didn’t burn her hands 🤢

No complaints at all. 3 generations very happy.

We visited the Flying Shuttle last night. We come to this pub regularly, visiting 5 times in the last 2 months. Usually our experience is great, food is nice and service is full of smiles. This time however not so great. My son (16) asked for a cider to go with his meal, of course accompanied by his parents. He carries his ID too. On ALL our previous visits he has had cider with no issues. However this time the young waiter asked for ID. My son of course handed over his driving licence. The waiter then told him he is under aged and cannot be served. Me and my wife both made him aware of our son's rights. The waiter went on to tell us its policy to not serve anyone under the age of 18. We asked to speak to the manager who also told us its policy and its in fact the policy of Marston's. We asked to see this policy and was told to go online. We spent a good 10 minutes going through Marston's policies online and Flying shuttles website. We could not find such policies laid out anywhere. It was because of this we decided to leave and obviously won't be returning. It's a real shame they have such ridiculous policies which completely embarrassed our son. We have made contact with Marston's to check that such policy exists. And if it does we will request for this to be made more clearer for future patrons. It baffles me a public house can afford to loose custom over something that is completely within the law. Update pending, once we have heard back from Marston's. Thank you for ruining a family meal out. **Thank you for your reply Carol. Welcoming staff. Lovely cooked food. The service was fantastic, by head of house & the lovely 2 waitresses who brought our food out. Food was cooked very well.

Boxing Day 2024 lunch - over cocked, cold, slow and no smiles. Really disappointed. 3 hours to get a 3 course PRE ORDERED dinner for 5 people. Salmon starters - one thin sliver only, no garnish and frozen butter. Soup was lukewarm. Roast dinner - well, yorkshire puddings were cold yet burnt. Roasties were cold and rock hard. Sprouts not trimmed correctly so not cooked right. Turkey, as dry as Gandhi’s flip flop. Pigs in blankets not cocked fully. Crumble would have been ok if there was more custard than a thimble…. I know the place is a fry and microwave kitchen mainly, but pick you game up guys…. Only one real ale on, after been my told there wasn’t any. Service with no smile or any enthusiasm what so ever. And yes they sat us right next to the toilets… carpet was dirty, clearly not hoovered that area (we were the first table of the day there). £200 wasted. Went for a Macdonald’s after to fill ourselves up - which was hot and fast 👍 Will not be going back while under current management.

Service good but food absolutely awful

You may like the food, you may not like the food. But for me, I was dissapointed and I wouldn't like to go back there to eat again.

First time we've been here despite living close by. Staff friendly and welcoming but very slow service, the place was packed though. Sharing 'signature' starter was really nice.

Great pub food and service. Chicken and chorizo kebab always hits the spot! Nice little spot to drop in as there’s always a good atmosphere.

Bit disappointing, went with friends for our little Christmas catch up as its a good location with where we all are, serving staff at the bar seemed drunk / on something and didn't know or care about a gluten free menu, however I knew from prior research there was one, another member of staff found it immediately... then managed to bring the wrong side dish to my friend. Food was mediocre, bit of a sad veggie burger but the young boy who bought the dishes out and checked back on us was actually a delight so that is one positive alongside my excellent company

Family visit (5 adults & 2 toddlers) - first impressions were great, pub looked lovely. Waiter took drinks orders which were extremely slow to arrive! Eventually took food orders, we arrived about 16:20 & food served approx 17:45!! We had 2 very hungry grandkids at this stage - waiter said the delay was because they were busy with a Christmas booking! Restaurant didn’t seem overly busy to us & customers that arrived quite a while after us got served their meals before us.. personally I think the waiter had forgotten to put our order through until we questioned him about our meals. 3 of the adult meals were missing items (coleslaw, stuffing & cracking) - we were not informed about this when we ordered, when questioned the waiter he said they had ‘run out’! My partner had the Cheese & bacon burger - 3 bites in, he found 2 long hairs ‘in the burger’ 🤢 Waiter informed & said “Errrr”, walked away & came back & asked if we wanted chef to make another burger - No thank you! Waiter informed the manager (who I assumed at this stage would come to table to apologise), she walked past us twice & looked at us but did not say a word! Very poor customer service, the cheese & bacon burger obviously got removed from the bill but after such a long delay & really poor service, I can honestly say that this is the worst establishment I have ever visited & would like an actual apology or goodwill gesture (not for this particular restaurant). Whilst my daughter was still eating her meal, the waiter came over & started clearing the table & asked if we’d like to pay by cash or card - felt like we were being pushed out of there - at least wait for all customers to be finished eating!! Training needed for ALL staff. I await a response. £130.07 for such a bad experience!

We visited this restaurant today and was very disappointed, waited an hour an half for our dinner to arrive, people come in before us and was served in what would have been a respectful time, our arrived eventually with loads of missing items, then my dad found a hair in his burger, drinks took forever to come, all in all was a terrible experience, when we questioned the bill about missing items and hairs in our food we was told they didn’t have it in stock and that they was sorry about the hair, they also said that they was busy catering to a group of people which I think is a poor excuse for the level of service that was provided

Very average. Time taken to deliver the starters was too long, time taken in between courses was too long. Who thought of putting balsamic vinegar and pesto in tomato soup? No mention of that on the menu, and why would you assume everyone would like it? It made the soup inedible. Same with the main course turkey meal- why assume everyone likes cranberry all over the Yorkshire pudding? One slice of carrot and one slice of parsnip as the vegetables was a poor offering, apart from the brussels. The turkey was very nice though. No-one at the bar to serve drinks.

Nice place, nice food, good service however for our first family visit I can say we most likely will not make a second visit. One member of staff repeatedly kept asking us to tip her and not the other girl who was serving us. She said her manager told her to tell us that we need to tip her and even collared my family members on their way to the toilet about how we need to give her the tip in cash and to her whilst she sat and ate her roast dinner on a break. Highly off putting not sure if management know of this lady doing this to customers, extremely embarrassing for the business and has really put me and my family off coming again. And for the record we most certainly did not tip anyone just for that reason. Worse than a begger off the street.

Nice food but shocking service from our waitress. Rude, unfriendly and miserable. Seemed very unhappy to be there and I honestly think working in hospitality is not for her as she didn’t smile once. Must be an awful feeling for her having to work in this field when so unhappy to even be courteous. Shame.

Had a lovely meal, there was 7 of us. Great table, great service. Didn’t have to wait long for our food. Also 30% was an added bonus, making it an afford meal for the family.

I went for dinner with family and the food was very well priced and though seemingly looking straight forward on the menu was better than many higher priced gastro pubs/restaurants in and around the area.

Sunday lunch was beautiful. Booked for 2 at 12.30pm. It got busy quite quickly but well worth the wait. Roast turkey was moist and not dry at all. Stuffing was tasty. We both thoroughly enjoyed it.

Lovely pub with great food. Had a steak pie and a fish and chips. Big portions - all served with a smile. They do a good deal for lunch menu so hoping to go back soon and try that.

Tomato soup was delicious as well as the signature burger. Onion rings were fresh and pate was perfect size.

Very pleasant, busy but didn't feel overcrowded. Good service, hot dinner.

Food was good, though service was slow and assume they were having a busy lunch though didn't seem to be very busy at the time.

It was nice to have a meal in a very relaxed, clean and airy restaurant. All the staff were friendly nothing was too much trouble. The food arrived timely and was well presented and hot. Only slight disappointment was no Panna cotta 😕

All round excellent service and food, Sarah (front of house) did extremely well handling some difficult situations (Parents not parenting!) very polite and efficient as are all the Staff. Carol in the Kitchen excellent food and all good value in a nice atmosphere.

Lots of things missing from menu including scampi, gammon and so much more !! No coffee as machine was out of order. Glasses had lipstick stains, cutlery was stained, table was sticky and ringed. Chair were very badly marked and stained. Menus had old food stains and finger marks. Will not be returning !

Perfect little date venue, came during the week took part in the monthly quiz an to spend quality time with my partner. Food highly recommend and a good range of drinks.

Had very enjoyable Sunday roast, minus 1 star due to grumpy waitress

I have visited a few times for a cheap and cheerful place to eat as a family, however on this occasion my son found a hair in his food. When I complained they replaced his meal but he was obviously a little put off. There was no apology or offer to take the meal off the bill, which would have been nice as everyone had finished eating by the time his meal came. My other two children were getting ratty by this point as we had already waited 50 minutes for the food. Waitress and man who was in charge didn't crack a smile between them. Only saving grace was the barman. Definitely won't return in a hurry.

Good pub for food and drink, part of Marstons

I visited your establishment on the 25th of September at approximately 3 pm. This is my fourth visit in as many weeks and was a disappointing experience. My companion and I ordered some drinks at the bar, indicated to the barman that we would like to sit at table 19 and asked for some menus so we could order food. Menus were provided which were literally falling apart and having made our selection we waited patiently for someone to come and take our food order. After waiting what seemed like a lifetime, but was probably only 15 minutes, I approached the bar and asked if someone could come and take our food order. I was told that table 19 was considered to be the “bar area” and as such food orders must be placed at the bar by the diner. There was absolutely no indication that certain tables do not benefit from waitress service. My suggestion would be that this information is displayed prominently either on the relevant tables or in the area where this condition applies. The pastry on the steak and ale pie that I ordered was absolutely rock hard and when I attempted to cut into it, it fractured into large pieces which skated across the plate. The long handle spoon presented to me to eat my chocolate Sundae was filthy. A replacement was provided which was only a slight improvement on its predecessor. The gents toilet comprises two cubicles and the lock on the one furthest from the door is broken and has been since my first visit. As mentioned above, this is my fourth visit and I am pleased to report that on my three previous visits the food and the service had been good. In fact, on my very first visit the food and service were so good that they precipitated my subsequent visits. Based on my experience described above I am not planning a fifth visit.

Good food and service, spoilt by 3 toddlers running around the bar area all evening screaming their heads off. No attempt to to stop them, by the staff, and egged on by parents. 8.30pm so you would have hoped they would have been tucked up in bed. This is why I hate 'family dining....' Love me, love my kids ......Sod everyone else.....And they moan about dogs.....

We arrived at 1515 for a roast dinner. When the waitress came to take our order we were told they had run out of Roast dinners despite your website saying it is all day on a Sunday. We then tried to order from the normal menu and we met with a list of things they didn’t have. The poor waitress had to keep returning to the table to tell us that the items we had ordered had “run out”. The list is below; Mixed grill Ribeye steak Mashed potato Macaroni cheese Sea bass Scampi Roast dinners It smacks of very poor stock management by the kitchen staff and pub manager. It should not be for the wait staff to inform the customers that the pub has run out of so much food.
