We had lunch at the flying horse today and the food was lovely. Really big portions we had the meat pies and the meat was very tender . Lots of seasonal vegetables. It was a delight to eat there. The service was really good we had a very jolly waitress who looked after us . We will definitely visit again .

Sadly, since being taken over by a new landlord/tenant about a month ago (October 2024), I am having to reduce my opinion this pub from 'amazing' to 'ordinary' and the prices are no longer 'excellent value' but are rather high for mediocre food. The service is no longer provided by the friendly staff we were used to. We have been there for lunch twice since the new people took over and will not bother to go again. There are other 'ordinary' and expensive pubs nearer so no longer worth the drive.

We've been going to this lovely pub on the green for a couple of years and always enjoyed the wonderful food and service from very friendly young staff BUT recently it has new management and staff. We were very very disappointed with literally awful meals and far from friendly staff, particularly the I assume the manager. I honestly felt very unwelcome. They used to have an amazing cook but I assume they left when new management arrived. Such a shame.

What a shame that this previously wonderful and friendly country pub has been taken over by rather unfriendly and almost rude people. I visited for our usual monthly evening meal with our lovely border collie dog only to find the veggie/vegan menu had gone with only one choice in its place. The service was brusque with the dog ignored ( he was always treated like a customer himself by the previous staff ) and my request for a bowl of water for him was ignored. There was no proper cutlery and I was given a dessert spoon to eat my soup. To top it all off I was overcharged by a whopping £24-00 which I didn't realise until my daughter pointed it out later! Although the money was refunded later I felt the evening was appalling and I would not go back even though I have always loved this particular pub until now.

In my opinion, not as good as it used to be, especially the pies. A pie should be a pie, not a stew between to pieces of puff pastry. It was tasty, but the puff was soggy bottom and flaky puff lid on top. Roast potatoes used to be an option, but now just chips, mash and sauté. Selection of main meals and puddings especially, a lot less than previous proprietor. Service was good.

After choosing a location for my Brothers 60th, to which we were both locals for many years and decided we would have a “family” get together at our “old local”. The afternoon went well with lots of jovial fun and reunion stories etc. We have an Autistic child that does need some supervision at all times, as do all children! Unfortunately this child decided to wonder off across to the village green but was quickly located by a member of our family and promptly returned. However we were confronted by the pub Manager with a tirade of fowl language telling us how we should have “kept a better eye on the child.” Firstly I do not appreciate being told with abusive language, and I mean abusive (swearing to the very extreme) in front of children! and secondly it was seconds that he was out of our sight. What an absolutely devastating end to what should have been a celebration of a 60th birthday. We have been frequenting this pub for over 40 years but be assured we will will never set foot in it again!

You will feel at home here from the first moment! Let go of all your pretenses here and be welcome! We stayed here. The bathroom is spacious and modern, the bedroom very old and higgledy-piggledy. An old-fashioned bed in it, where you sleep very well. The food is excellent and the menu looks traditional. Until it turns out that page 2 offers as many vegetarian and vegan dishes as the meat and fish dishes. They love nutritious food and luckily we do too. Furthermore, a great pub to have a beer while watching the cricket match.

Enjoyed a lovely meal with some friends. Quality of food was very good and service from our Canadian server was excellent. Only negative was the quality for their toilets, which resemble poorly maintained public toilets, complete with stainless steel trough to pee into, broken taps, no flusher on toilet, toilet seat hanging off and very rusty toilet brush - a bit smelly too! Such a shame the very poor quality of their toilets let down this otherwise excellent restaurant.

The people 'running' this place don't deserve the opportunity they've been given to operate what could and used to be, a first class welcoming English country pub in an enviable setting ! Very long wait just for (overpriced, (eg £3 lime & soda !) drinks in the garden which when they did arrive were incorrect & with the staff pretty clueless, not helped by quite an arrogant 'manager' telling people off for not adhering to his, (incorrect) version of covid rules on numbers seated. As soon as there is a change of ownership the better as I, like many I should think, will not be returning until everything starts to improve.

Has this place changed hands?? After having a lovely meal for my wife's birthday pre-pandemic lockdowns, we thought we would return with friends now that restrictions are easing. Booked a table for 6 several days in advance for 7:30pm. Should have noticed the red flags as soon as we arrived. We had to wait while they had to arrange the tables to seat 6 of us. No-one offered a drink while we were waiting. When the somewhat already limited menus arrived, we were told several items were not available. Should have walked away then but we persevered. Our starters took a fair while to appear, but then we waited over an hour for our main courses.which eventually arrived after 9pm, and when they did, one of our party's meal (the Sea Bass) was in inedible. It was lukewarm and under cooked. So put off was he, he refused to eat anything else. The rest of our meals were adequate at best. Our comments and complaints were met with total indifference. We were finally offered dessert around 10:15 which we all declined as it was way too late. The final straw was the staff made it sound that thet were doing us a favour by removing the inedible meal from the bill!! WON'T be returning.

The waitresses were actually quite childish, unprofessional and loud - really not what you want when trying to enjoy a meal and all you can hear is them.

We booked a table but arrived early and were seated very quickly. The ambiance was warm and very comfortable. The roast dinners were great with a good selection of vegetables. The staff were hefpful but not intrusive. An excellent find on our walking holiday.

Where do I begin? Having recently moved into the village, I decided to invite my partner's parents to see the house and grab food at the local pub. My partner and her Mum had the roast; I tried some of my partner's roast Lamb and was met with a buttery goodness that brought back memories of Grandma's cooking. Honey roasted parsnips were also amazing.

Visited here for lunch. Bit of a chilly greeting but the menu looked promising & the food delivered! Unfortunately our order for 6 people was not put through at the same time so we ended up eating at slightly different times but the staff were very apologetic. The food was delicious - massive, tasty burgers, hot fresh whitebait, fat chips. We will definitely return to try more of the menu.

Sorry but we gave this place a try as it was being promoted on local radio , it’s hardly a warm welcome, I tried chatting to the barmaid while she was pouring our drinks ,she was very pan faced and never smiled once and had a job to reply , it’s a shame as the food was good when we went through to the restaurant but I wouldn’t go back just for a drink as it’s clearly to much trouble for some people

Called in Wednesday evening and ordered 2 steaks with bottle of wine for £30. Steaks delicious and perfectly cooked, with chunky chips and salad. Had sauce for an extra £3 - also delicious. Can't remember when I've enjoyed a meal so much - very good value for money too.

We arrived at this pub, wet and muddy, after walking 14 miles of the South Downs Way. There was no washing/drying facilities for our walking gear which was filthy. Accommodation very basic and we didn’t get to sleep until after midnight as rooms are located above the restaurant/bar area.

De pub round the corner. Beter zelf koken of ergens anders eten.

We stayed overnight on our walk to Canterbury. We had hoped for an early start but coming downstairs we found the main bar area locked and it took them half an hour to locate keys. Instead of an 8 o'clock breakfast we eventually had breakfast at 9. Very few apologies and nothing had been laid out the previous night. Our food the previous day was mediocre too. We shall not go back in a hurry.

Took my elderly mother here for lunch today, very disappointed... We ordered two simple meals (ploughman's and jacket potato with chicken breast. Bread in ploughman's was obviously left from the weekend and renamed in slices in an attempt to freshen but just made it rock hard.potato very dry and these two awful meals took over an hour to arrive....hate to think what would happen if they were busy, we will not be back or recommend.

Bar area seemed very noisy although it was a Friday evening Restaurant was not as busy as might be expected. Food was palatable but nothing to write home about. Ambiance no great shakes. Better locations around.

Booked with friends and worst 3 hours, 7pm Friday and the bar was full of very loud men many children present and language totally unsuitable for a family. They could only find 3 menus after 10 minutes so opted for further drinks and the gin selection is excellent. Shown to our table in the restaurant which only had a few other diners. Starters took 45 minutes to arrive (Garlic bread, salt chips, stuffed potato skins) all rather disappointing and when I was stil eating the waitress wanted to clear the table. Another long wait for our main courses, gammon ham - burned and fatty, chicken burger - overcooked and dry, ham, egg n chips OK burger n chips OK but the pulled pork could not be pulled, torn or hacked into with a sharp knife, this was returned and promised that another was just being prepared. Everyone had finished by the time the dish was served but again it was not edible, the waitress just cleared the table no apology for the spoint meal. After waiting for another 10 minutes she offered a drink on the house but by then our evening had been ruined. We will not return.

First time here. They serve a decent pint and range of beers and all the staff were very friendly and helpful. Had a homemade Steak & Ale pie which was very good. Karaoke was on so I went to the other end of the pub but the locals seemed to be having a good time.
