Visited on Friday 15th of November. We should have been a party of eight but were reduced to a party of four due to unforeseen circumstances. This didn’t phase the restaurant in anyway: the staff were excellent, very understanding and the service throughout the night was fantastic. We ate from the set menu which gave us a choice of three starters, three mains, and two desserts. we could have eaten everything on the menu, the choice was so good. I opted for the cod starter followed by the Venison the sticky toffee pudding. All were exquisite in their appearance and the taste was amazing. Can’t wait to return!

One of the best restaurants we’ve been to. Service, food and atmosphere all amazing. Incredible value for the price. Would be at least double or triple the price in London. We’ll be back every time we’re near the area.

Both the steak and chicken dishes were delicious and cooked to perfection. Though they didn’t look like large portions, they were surprisingly satisfying. The candied carrot cheesecake was absolutely lovely, while the banoffee pie didn’t quite meet my wife’s expectations—perfect excuse for a swap! In the end, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Although the front door was stuck, which didn’t make the best first impression, everything else was amazing. I went on a Wednesday with my boyfriend to celebrate my birthday, and they left a birthday card in the table. The restaurant was filled with other couples, the vibe was good. The overall experience was definitely worth the price—affordable, yet it felt like a treat.

When this was booked in August it was advertised as 9 courses plus snacks (when we went in July had the 6 courses which was 6 courses plus snacks) but it was actually served as 8 courses plus snacks this time. I thought this was a little bit cheeky that they reduce what you are getting in between. There just didn't seem to be the same attention to detail as the first visit and the overall menu was poorer...I'll explain. The cheese tart, which I had in July, had hardly any cheese in it this visit, it broke in two and was pretty much pastry and kale. There was no proper texture to it or flavour as the key ingredient was pretty much missing. The scallop wasn't cooked correctly. There was no even browning/crust/caramelisation on it from when it had been in the pan or on the grill plate, just a little bit to one edge almost. It was very transparent. I didn't have the scallop here last but I have had them before this year and the one at the Flintlock hadn't had any attention paid to it in the way it was cooked. Out of the "hot" served dishes there wasn't one that was anywhere near hot. They all came out like they had been standing under a hot lamp with skins forming on sauces and purees. The best dish was the cod in chicken and tarragon sauce, this was the most inventive and good tasting dish. The restaurant says it offers local produce but I'm not sure the scallop, duck or cod was local! In July there was local beef on the menu but nothing this time. The service was good but I would see that as a "given". I was there with three other people of which two were there on my recommendation so its difficult to then sit there complaining to staff about the food. Personally I won't be going again, it wasn't anywhere near as enjoyable as an overall experience as it was in July.

Phenomenal dining experience last night at The Flintlock. We had the small tasting menu, which at £65 felt like excellent value for money with the dishes we received. Every dish was clearly meticulously crafted and it’s clear to see that serious time, effort and thought has been put in to creating the highest quality dishes possible. Additionally, service was truly excellent and every dish was presented and described by the front of house team in a very pleasant manner and each dish was treated as something special (which it all was). Thoroughly enjoyable evening: we definitely will be returning.

Quite a lively restaurant with an interesting layout fabulous tasting menu served by very pleasant waiting staff. We also had the wine flight which was served to us by the usual sommelier type, a rushed and mumbled description of each wine already shoved into a glass and shown the bottle spoken in a monotone voice which doesn't want to answer questions and can't wait to leave the table!

The sommelier was helpful in suggesting a couple of wine alternatives for one of our party. Food was amazing. I often think about the Staffordshire Cheese Tartlet, one of my fav things I have ever eaten. The rhubarb panna cotta was also a highlight too!

Currently visiting the top 20 restaurants in Staffordshire and when I drew up the list this was at number 10, well if the 10th best is this good then I'm in for a treat with the other 9. This place is truly not only the best meal I've had out for the 11 restaurants I've been to, but it's the best meal I've ever had and i don't say that lightly. I've put pictures of the food on but they don't do the flavours justice, every one of those sauces were a little taste of heaven. I'm still buzzing today about the meal and it's been nearly 24 hours since I had it. I thoroughly recommend trying this place out. We had the 4 course set menu and every course was 10/10. Couldn't recommend this place more. We called up for a reservation for the 6 course menu in the morning and explained my wife was pregnant, to which they told us they would ensure they would adapt any of the dishes to be suitable. If you are usually unsure about a tasting menu - please don't be put off as the portion sizes were plenty, with a couple of complimentary additional nibbles added on too. We left completely satisfied. The food was excellent both in taste and presentation with a perfect balance of flavours across the menu. Service was excellent (particularly the lady on front of house and the young man serving us). Not overbearing but there to help with anything you need. Our third time at this lovely restaurant Thom is a very talented chef and the setting is relaxed, romantic and atmospheric. We had the taster menu. The beetroot tartlet was delightful, and the Parker House roll out of this world! If I am being uber critical the cod dish maybe needed a little more seasoning and the ox cheek cottage pie maybe go with a traditional buttery mash rather than potato mousse. But honestly, this place is fantastic. All the team were so lovely, down to earth and attentive. I look forward to our next visit and Thom's next creations.

Don't be fooled by the rather industrial warehouse feels as you drive into the carpark. Don't be swayed by the random nature of ditch your car anywhere . Don't be put off by the lack of kerb appeal or not knowing where the entrance is. Don't - because see passed all those things and you get a true culinary experience. In this restaurant, the food really is the star of the show - and at £85 the tasting menu is highly recommended - a very reasonable price. The food itself delivered exceptional flavour, exploding inside my mouth - every dish. Although consistency was an issue on a couple of dishes - the overall profile and experience was the stuff of legends.

From the first meeting to the paying of the bill, this was an amazing experience. We chose the pescatarian menu, wave after wave of exquisite food bombarded our taste buds. A favourite course would be difficult as they were all very different, that said the pleasure was maintained. If you are a vegetarian, trust me, vegetables have never tasted this good. Food and service were excellent. We had the tasting menu and were impressed with the menu and food which was absolutely delicious. Beautifully cooked and presented. A gorgeous menu which included local produce which is a nice touch particularly because we are from the area. Staff are clearly very well trained. Each server was very attentive and knowledgeable about the food they were serving. Knocked one ‘star’ off because I think the toilet facilities should be improved at a venue which is so expensive. No loo roll in the ladies and no water pressure in tap. Not the end of the world but when paying such high prices I do expect all of the facilities to be up to scratch. Despite that would recommend to others as the food was sensational. Perfect for a treat or special occasion. Thank you.

After 3 fantastic meals at the Flintlock in the last year or so, from which I’d left a 5 star review, our latest visit this Easter Sunday just past was disappointing. On the whole the food was as tasty as before, but the portion size for 3 of the 4 courses (we paid for the extra cheese and onion tartlet course) seemed to me like they were from a tasting menu…two or three bites and gone. The roast beef main course was again tasty, but all 4 on our table had 2 rather small wafer thin slices of the beef, along with a single bite size carrot. I’m sorry to say the pineapple cake dessert was most underwhelming, it was dry and over-baked, no doubt it’s difficult to bake such a small individual cake and keep it moist. Not sure if these issues were because we were almost the last table to be seated on the day but if I’m spending nearly £300 on Sunday lunch it’s got to be excellent. I was going to say something before we left, but sadly no-one asked if everything was OK, and half way through our meal 3 members of what I’m guessing were Thom’s family were seated on the table next to us, so didn’t want to cause any awkwardness by complaining.

We visited the restaurant in January 2024 to experience Thom Bateman's dishes after following him on social media for quite some time. We have eaten in some outstanding restaurants around the world and we were excited to try Thom's marrying of ingredients for ourselves instead of drooling over his social media accounts! We booked in for the taster menu. The way Thom brings together the fresh and flavoursome dishes is simply a work of art. The flavours and textures were like explosions of everything your senses can handle and some. Every bite was simply impeccable. You find yourself momentarily drifting somewhere sensational with every bite you take. Every detail was attended to perfectly and we finished the evening saying "wow" to each other, almost speechless from what we had just experienced. Thank you Thom and team. A wonderful evening. The restaurant itself was relaxed and calm. Perfect. The staff were extremely tentative and 100% on the ball but not in a routine manner. Even though the restaurant was almost full, they made you feel like you were the only ones they were looking after. Our drinks were tended to better than anywhere we have been before. Any questions raised about ingredients were quickly answered as if they were there when the dish was lovingly made. An overall fantastic, memorable and excellent evening. Thank you.

We have been following @chefthombateman for a few years now and love his style of food. @the.flintlock.cheddleton is understated yet charming and in keeping with its lock-side roots. Settling in with a G&T we dived into the taster menu, getting our pallets going in style with a trio of snacks, the perfect way to start a culinary journey! ⭐️4.5/5 Recommend👍🏻 Price 💸💸💸 What we had… ▪️Staffordshire Cheese Tartlet Salt Baked Beetroot - Black Garlic ▪️Tortelli Pig Cheek – Winter Squash - Bisque ▪️Cornish Hake Fermented Lettuce - Sea Vegetables - Charcoal Butter Sauce ▪️Venison Celeriac – Red Cabbage – Deer Stalker Pie ▪️Pear Sauternes - Cucumber – Dill - Gingerbread ▪️Salcombe Chocolate Sour Cream Brownie, Woodruff, Pedro Ximenez, Cocoa Nib The highlights… Diving into the first of 6 courses we started on a high. Earthy yet sweet, a salt baked beetroot volcano bomb. We were both obsessed with this dish which also provided a bit of theatre. The bread course was surprisingly well worth a mention. Tearing apart the cloud like, squishy parker house roll and smothering it in salty miso onion butter was a delight. Tortelli, denser than expected but enjoyable and loved the complementing prawn flavoured bisque. The fish course was up there cooked well and complemented with samphire and silky butter sauce, hake heaven. Pre desert was all about texture, bringing a unique desert with tartare sauce vibes. Yes this sounds odd but was delightful. Pops of freshness everywhere, gingerbread subtle and barely there but that took away nothing from this ultimate palette cleanse. Chocolate lovers would be in heaven with this dense chocolate ganache brownie though a little rich for our taste. Probably the least memorable course although we fully admit this sort of desert rarely gets us excited but is a fave for many. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening. Flo stole the show, friendly and approachable, a real asset to the team. For a taster menu experience in a laid-back unpretentious environment we would recommend a date at The Flintlock. #theshropshirefoodies #foodblogger #foodreview #foodie #foodjournal #restaurantreview #foodlover #foodblog

The food obviously speaks for itself, but being dairy free I was expecting a very long list of dairy shaming exclusions and I was delightfully surprised, we had prebooked with our foodie foibles and everything was in place for it to be a inclusive food experience, we paired cocktails with food, again supported by the excellent front of house staff. The venue is tastefully presented with a warm and pleasant atmosphere. We opted for the tasting menu with wine pairing. The presentation and quality of food was good, but not great. The most disappointing aspect however was the service. The sommelier lacked enthusiasm, and seemed disinterested in providing any level of customer service. We found it strange that the wine courses were not poured at the table. Instead our glasses were delivered to the table, and we were then shown an empty bottle with a short explanation of the individual wine. Some of the other service staff looked like they didn’t want to be there, and could barely raise a smile when serving the food. In my opinion there is far more to a fine dining experience than just serving good food. At no point during the evening did anyone ask if we had enjoyed our meal or the experience. Perhaps they didn’t want to know. I really don’t mind paying a premium for a great experience, but this fell short on the service aspect.

If you are fussy with food I suggest checking first. This is a great little family affair, you can see how hard they are all working and probably on a steep learning curve too with the recent TV and social media success. We all thought the food was fab and I am a proper foodie and part time critic for a well know magazine. Met Tom and his mum during service , really friendly and reinforced what we saw on the telly. Not going to scratch about for faults as we went for the food , the place is a bit ‘front room’ feeling but this makes it non stuffy. We went on a quiet Saturday lunch time. We had been looking forward to this lunch since discovering it was the restaurant of Tom Bateman and we were not disappointed. The restaurant is lovely with plenty of space and light. Nice views to the canal and beyond. The lunch menu was small which we prefer as this usually means attention to detail and imaginative dishes. We had two delicious canapes which we shared. This was followed by lovely homemade bread with a dipping bowl. The starters were superb ,a great belly pork dish and a perfect charred leek dish. The mains were exceptional and lick your plate delicious ( a succulent chicken dish and a beautiful Cornish hake dish ). We needed a rest before having the opportunity to savour the excellent, creative deserts... a classy pear with date pudding and a fine, rich chocolate delice. We had just enough room for the large, perfect cappuccino's followed by a complimentary fresh baked cake. The service was very good and the timings of the food was perfect. Great value for this quality ( and such a treat to have a refined menu and not the long as your arm, all day dining menu's that seem to be a trend at present in so called fine dining place's ). Highly recommended.

Enjoyed a superb evening, with a pairing of wines by Gusbourne, and food by Tom and staff. Our second visit and already looking forward to the next.

Quite simply the best food we have ever had. The service was excellent and I have no idea how anyone can rate this place anything less than 5*. We were speechless at pretty much every part of the tasting menu. We travelled 3 hours to The Flintlock and are already planning our next return!

A beautiful venue, tastefully and elegantly furnished with pleasing background music. Professional, observant staff who noticed when a glass needed filling be it with wine or water. Absolutely delicious food from the starter of complimentary bread and seasoned butters to the final mouthful. Everything was beautifully presented and perfectly cooked, we opted for the 3 course a la carte menu at an all inclusive price of £45.00 and were very pleased with the options. One guest, being lactose intolerant, was very impressed with the thoughtfulness of the staff on her behalf. My only concern and it's probably because I'm not familiar with the etiquette of fine dining, was how very small the portions were. Between 4 of us we had 5 glasses of wine, 2 bottles of water and 2 x £10.00 "upgrades" for the duck option. We paid £67.00 each plus gratuities. Fairly expensive by our normal standards but we did have a wonderful time. Thank you.

2nd time we visited in 4 weeks and again we were extremely satisfied with both the service and quality of the tasting menu. A very friendly and not overattentive staff made the evening very enjoyable. A major plus (in addition to the food and service) is the generous spacing of the tables which ensures low noise levels and a degree of privacy not often enjoyed in similar restaurants. We would highly recommend this restaurant for a pleasant and satisfying evening.

Had a fantastic lunch here on the way to a long weekend nearby. All of the dishes were absolutely delicious and left feeling incredibly satisfied. Service was great, served at a good pace and didn't feel rushed even though we were the last customers of the sitting. Particular thanks to the restaurant manager who was great, made us feel valued rather than just another 2 covers which can be the way in some fine dining establishments. Really standout meal and will be back if we're in the area.

We have pasted his place SO many times without a 2nd thought, but never again. We will definitely be promoting the Flintlock & will be back. THANK YOU for a wonderful experience.

Incredible place, food and wine. Discovered this as we’ve followed Thom for years and are big fans of his work. First time taster menu with matching wine flight and could not fault it (other than Thom being on holiday!) Service was exceptional and the only problem was trying to rank the food as it was out of this world. Flavours I’ve never experienced before. “Best thing I’ve tasted” was the most common review on our table. 3 hour drive for us, but well worth it and I can honestly say we will be back. Visited for a friends 40th and the area is great with some nice local pubs as a bonus.

This is very much a higher end restaurant with a set menu. It's a dining experience. You will probably pay £50-70+ per person depending on the drinks options. The food is wonderful. Definitely a "special occasion" place.

We were staying over in Leek on a Sunday evening, wanting to sample some Staffordshire oatcakes the following morning, but the oatcake shop we wanted was closed on Monday! Poor planning. But luckily this place was open at 7.30 am and we found what we wanted here: oatcakes with various fillings such as bacon or tomato; all with cheese. If you've not tried them, Staffordshire oatcakes are very different to the Scottish biscuit that most people associate with 'oatcakes'. Here, they are a soft, flexible wrapper like a pancake, or perhaps a chapatti, made from a thin layer of a yeasted oatmeal/wheat batter griddled until it sets, then wrapped around your chosen filling. We took a pair of oatcakes with cheese and bacon, and a full English of 2 eggs, 2-3 bacon, 2 sausages, 2 toast, beans and tomatoes, plus extra hash browns. This was all in a takeaway tray - there is no table service here. It took about 10 minutes, which is fair enough as everything is cooked to order; but we were the only customers at that time. I imagine at busy times there could be quite a wait. The food was excellent, piping hot as you'd expect with it being cooked to order; and good value too, under £10 for the 2 breakfasts described above, though coffees added a bit more. Highly recommended.
