The Flintlock Inn in East Devon

Delightful place, great food and very good service. Perfect for a family lunch.

After a search on Trip Adviser we found The Flintock Inn which is half an hour’s drive from our holiday cottage in Sidbury. 2 delicious 3 course Sunday lunches were enjoyed during our holiday. This is the only meal they seem to be serving at the moment and our food was delicious on both occasions. Everything is homemade and the menu changed each Sunday. We had roast beef, roast pork and roast chicken over the 2 visits which were all generously served and very well cooked. Very tender and tasty meats. There is also a plentiful selection of fresh vegetables. Tasty starters and desserts begin and end the meal. A bargain at £24.95 for 3 courses. You can have 1,2 or 3 courses. The landlord is very welcoming and friendly and his wife is an excellent cook. We would happily be regulars if we lived locally and we wouldn’t hesitate to return if on holiday in Devon again. For those travelling on the A303 to or from the West Country it is a perfect place to stop off for Sunday lunch as it is just off that road. Its position also makes it very easy to get to if you are on holiday in the area.

We were on holiday in an air b and b round the corner to this pub,with our dogs. Currently, they are only opening on Fridays and Sundays, but as we had visited before a few years ago, and loved the food, we made a point of booking a table for Friday night. We enjoyed superb fish and chips, with mushy peas and tartare sauce. I then had the Brownie, which was rich and wonderfully moist. My Husband had the crème brûlée which he said was delicious. It was so lovely to be back in this immaculately clean and welcoming pub.

Absolutely fabulous Sunday lunch! We sat in the beer garden and had a wonderful time. Everyone in our party of 9 commented on the quality of the food and the brilliant service. Full marks to the team at the Flintlock Inn - thank you and we will be back! Dog friendly too - just say when booking a table so you get a table in the dog-friendly section if eating inside.

Had the 6 course menu absolutely outstanding to celebrate my birthday

6 years ago... Happened by this place on our way down to Cornwall because we needed refreshments. The Barkeeper was welcoming and friendly and advised us to sit in the beer garden, which we gratefully did as it was a beautiful sunny day. We decided to order the minted lamb burger to fill us up for the rest of the journey and OMG it was the best burger I have ever had. Beautifully presented and just enough to fill us up without being overfull.

Delicious food in a bright and airy country pub. Our party had Roast chicken, Roast beef and Nut roast, all presented beautifully and just the right amount to be able to enjoy a pudding.

Had a Sunday lunch for Father's Day. All had something different and all very good. Great starters and desserts all reasonably priced .

Flintlock Inn made my Christmas feast a memorable affair. Starting with the refreshing Haloumi Salad, the festive vibes were set just right. The succulent Roast Leg of Lamb showcased the comforting allure of holiday traditions. Flintlock Inn, a cherished spot in Devon, proved to be more than just a dining experience; it was a celebration of local culinary delights. The Orange Chocolate Cheesecake added a sweet conclusion, leaving me appreciating the festive ambiance and the warmth of a local gem. Flintlock Inn, undoubtedly captures the essence of a delightful Christmas feast.

News years eve 2023. Just had the most fabulous meal, steak best we've had for a long time. We don't eat out much but this will always be the place we choose.

Fabulous evening from start to finish. Food was delicious, there was enough choice that there was something for everyone without be overwhelming. Dog friendly, warm and cosy. Will definitely be back and would recommend 100%

Wonderful place, attended for a private wedding. Mixing classy and homely, with a beautiful beer garden and outdoor space to dance the night away, we had a magical evening. Thanks very much The Flintlock Inn!

Arrived dead on 12 which is the stated opening time. Place was closed, waited 15 mins and still no sign of life. Called and no answer with a very unprofessional answer machine message!

The best kept secret in The Blackdown Hills. Food is outstanding, pricing is spot on, great value. A real country winner.

Delicious meal - I had the slow cooked lamb and lemon posset. Quite quiet even though it was Friday evening but the service was excellent.

Says online it's open Tues night between 6 and 8.its not as just drove here!!

Popped in for lunch on Thursday for my birthday, as we were staying locally. Such a great find! Staff were lovely and very attentive. The cheese and bacon burger was quite possibly the best burger I have ever had! Really enjoyed it here, will definitely be back if local again.

First visit - first-class food!

We have just had lunch here, our first visit and the food was excellent. We couldn't fault it and the staff were very friendly.

Lovely dog friendly pub. Popped in on the way to friends. Had fabulous mussels with fries and French bread. The dog even got a sumptuous new year treat!

We chose this pub partly based on the reviews we’d read, but also because it was a mid way point between those of us meeting up for lunch. We were very pleasantly surprised. The pub is spacious yet cosy and the staff were friendly and efficient. Our food was very good indeed. Pub grub, but of high quality. Sensibly priced and decent portions. We’ll definitely meet up here again.

Visited for an evening meal. Lovely pub and friendly and helpful staff. Excellent choice of menu. Pheasant Terrine, Steak and Kidney pie and Ham Eggs and Chips were excellent. Loved the Creme Brulee desert. Would highly recommend along with a pint or two of Otter Ale.

The food is wonderful, beautifully cooked and loads of extra vegetables. We’ve been going every year for years and will continue to meet family and friends there.

Had lovely meal, service great but it was so cold where we were seated. Two members of our party put their coats on, fire was allowed to die out.

We had the best Sunday lunch here, the food was served very hot and it stayed that way due to warmed plates and what a difference it makes! Great value for money too, less expensive than most gastropubs we visit but quality just as good. Friendly landlord.

Located just off 303. staff welcoming and helpful service good food excellent my wife had steak and kidney pie large chunks of meat very tasty. I had muscles again excellent. Prices medium. All in all well worth visiting we will definitely be returning

We visited as a party of 13 for a family gathering and included one toddler and a dog. We were accommodated in a private area with garden access for the dog and toddler which was great. We ordered from the Sunday set menu. All the choices were of excellent quality and well presented, and there was a good choice for all dietary requirements. The portions were very generous and the food was freshly cooked and tasted homemade. The staff were attentive and helpful and addressed our needs quickly and effectively. We would definitely visit again.

My conclusion first, good value, tasty food in a almost cozy atmosphere. The details - the out side if this pub looks like an old English pub should. Inside the are flintlocks and muskets on the walls. Wooden beams and open fires, but it didn't feel as olde worldy as it should have. Still it was neat and clean. The food offering was good, not massive choice, but enough. I was very happy with my halloumi and mushroom burger. Often with this sort of thing the mushroom has too much liquid still in it and the whole thing goes soggy, not here. I'm happy to report that Tabasco was available. This is not one of those places where the person bringing you your food has to say "what we have here is an foam of this and a reduction of that, a top a bed of the other". No it good honest pub food. In an honest pub.

First time we've been here and it lived up to its good reputation even though we think it's changed hands recently

Very good choice of dishes, excellently cooked. Above the run-of-the-mill pub menu. We were a party of six and though there were 2 other large parties and other diners, we did not have to wait long for our food. Staff were friendly and efficient.

Disappointed. We used to visit this pub regularly over many years with the previous owners as we live locally. We were looking forward to returning today for Sunday lunch. No greeting when we arrived. No smile. Vegetables were extremely hard. Roast potatoes hard. Yorkshire puddings burnt on edges. Beef and pork meats were average. No condiments were offered and my 97 year old Mum had to ask. Puddings ok. Shame😩

Two of us booked for Sunday lunch, 3 courses everything was piping hot just as I like, including the plate, garlic mushrooms and brie to start, followed by roast beef and pork, with carrots, cauliflower/broccoli cheese, and cabbage, roast parsnip and potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and lovely gravy, we both had syrup sponge pudding and custard, we have been talking about it all week it was faultless, the pub is lovely inside, clean toilets, nice gardens if the weather is good, just off the A303 Marsh is a little hamlet very easy to find, I advise booking very good price, don’t take my word for it, give it a try.

Great pub. Visited on route to Cornwall. Great pub food. We kept it simple with sandwiches but a great sandwich is a lost art, not here, they were wonderful. Great with the kids and dog as well. We will visit again for sure

A little disappointing. No atmosphere at all. The food was good, but not great. Service was pretty bad, we were forgotten about so long waits between courses.

Was looking for a half way stop on return journey back to London after a stay in Cornwall and chose this place based on reviews. I can confirm that it is most definitely worthy of those reviews. It’s a great venue with a warm welcome serving excellent food just minutes from the A303. Perfect.

We stumbled upon this little gem on our drive back to London after a lovely week in Cornwall. If we could, we really would visit it every day. Wonderfully welcoming staff, and the food was amazing!!! London pubs & restaurants could learn a lot from The Flintlock Inn. Our family of four adults and one child, a combo of vegan, vegetarian and meat eaters, have never encountered any establishment (anywhere) which catered for all our needs at such a high standard as The Flintlock Inn. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!! We will be back!!!

Good dinner served well buy temp staff .holding the Fort. Friendly people and customers Noticed baby changing facility in place in lady's loo nothing in place should male need to do task . Nice meal n time .

So we decided to walk from Yarcombe in Devon to this Inn seeing reviews, it was a 45mins walk which is fine, when got there very welcoming staff and friendly and helpful atmosphere lovely, ordered food which was really nice and drinks good selection, this is in a place called Marsh just off the A303 and a lovely looking village with friendly people, we would go again and recommend, but think should have taxi numbers for people who would like to be able to not have to worry about driving or walking

We were staying in a house nearby and were happy to find this public house. We ate there three times this week and everything was excellent, lovely selection of well cooked food and delightful hosts. If you are in the area please call in as you will not be disappointed in the food or service

a very good find and great food

We have just had a fantastic meal, the food was exceptional. The staff were all really friendly too. We had walked there from a close by camp site where we were staying with our caravan, but had last minute realised we had run out of gas and therefore couldn't cook the meal we had brought with us. The walk there was OK, but we knew there was some steep hills on the way back, so asked about taxi's, but they tried 4 taxi companies and could not get a taxi for love nor money. Bless them, they went out of their way and got us a lift back to our camp site via a local friend. Truly grateful that these lovely people are about and brings the British spirit back into communities and especially on the queen's jubilee weekend 🙌 😇🥰 THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU

Lovely Sunday lunch. Service was a little slow. Most staff were friendly and chatty, others were a little sullen. Overall we would go back.

Reasonable value and service but to be fair we only had a toasted sandwich. Seems popular, having been there a few times always busy. Not five stars because I can only comment on what we had.

Huge portions of excellent food and great beer. Glad that we don't live too far away! A favourite, best steak and kidney pie ever! Every time we go I think I'll try something different but it doesn't happen!

Thoroughly enjoyed our lunchtime meal. I enjoyed the pea and mint soup with really yummy warm focaccia bread all very nicely presented. Had a avocado and pepper sandwich which was also very good. Will definitely return. Very accessible off the A302...so handy for those travelling from the south to Devon/Cornwall.

Came for lunch at 2.20pm and they'd stopped serving food. On a Sunday? It's a perfectly normal lunch time. So many of these pubs have got so lazy and don't care about customers since covid.

First time to The Flintlock inn lovely food nice atmosphere drinks very reasonably priced, all food cooked to a high standard staff very friendly,fantastic vegan wine. Highly recommended.we will be back.

This was our first visit since the change of ownership/lockdown and we were delighted to find that the previous high standards have been maintained. The menu for main courses wasn't quite as extensive as before as they are having to build up again but was nevertheless sufficiently varied for all tastes. Imaginative and well-prepared selection of vegetables. Pleasant and efficient service with all orders now taken at the table. Lastly both menu and particularly wine list compare favourably in both quality and price with other establishments in the area.

Had a great meal at The Flintlock Inn this evening. Very good service and exceptional value for money. If you're in the neighbourhood do yourself a favour and stop to eat, you will be glad you did.

Delightful hidden gem ☺️ Great menu, freshly cooked with excellent quality produce. Parsnip gratin, had so much flavour we had to ask for the recipe. Very warm friendly service.

Stopped off for a bite to eat on our way home from Cornwall to Kent. Friendly staff, quick service and excellent food. We both had the chicken katsu curry. Thoroughly enjoyed it and well be sure to stop the next time we're passing.

A very nice inn with a very welcoming atmosphere, good service and good food from a varied menu. The choice of wines was also very good as was the vfm. Luckily we only have a 20 minute drive to get there so we shall be going back.

A very inhospitable Inn! I called at 8,30pm and requested food which was refused despite food being served and the Inn open until 10pm! The proprietor refused to provide any food at all. Disgraceful service and certainly not in the spirit of an Inn!

A really lovely eating experience at the pub that is just slightly off the beaten track. I only dropped a star as the interior and place mats, cutlery etc are somewhat dated. However, the staff and food are exceptional. I would put this in the upper tier of what most people would regard as 'pub food' - I had the stuffed chicken and the other half had pork chop. Both were absolutely delicious and we loved every morsel. If you are in the area I strongly suggest you visit.

Loved it...the food was excellent, my husband had seabass, I had the chicken, ham and leek pie. Both delicious, well presented and the desserts were equally good. My husband felt it was the best chocolate brownie he had had in a long time. Friendly service. Would recommend.
