A very popular community pub set in the heart of Hillesley village. We received a warm welcome. Sadly, the occasion was a wake to celebrate the life of a dear friend who frequented this very pub! The buffet provided for the occasion provided a range of sandwiches, sausage tolks, quiche, chicken skewers & more. A range of sweet treats was part of the spread, however I didn't sample them. A lovely venue for the occasion. The pub was very vibrant on the Friday we visited. A testament to the community spirit within this lovely village.

Beware misleading pricing: Fish and chips were advertised as buy one get second one half price on Friday. When it came to paying for our lunch we were charged full price as we were told the offer was for dinner only ( the menu board didn't say that). Apparently this had happened before but the management had refused to change the offer description. It required a good deal of hassle to get any acceptance. Also an automatic and excessive service charge was added to our bill.

Sunday lunch was amazing, great staff and amazing atmosphere, they have a good car park out the back and a beer garden with lots of seating, the pub itself is a gem of the time before but light and Airy with clean tables and toilets. Log burner lit and warming. Way exceeded expectations. We could not have asked for more. Oh that all village pubs could offer the same. I'd been in with my family whilst on hol in village. Great food, friendly staff History Like many other village pubs up and down the country The Fleece was originally owned by a Pub Co that went into administration in 2011. The vibe of the village was noticeably altered; some felt quite bereft at the closure. So the local community formed HCPL (Hillesley Community Pub Ltd) and bought the Freehold. In July 2012 The Fleece Inn re-opened as a Community Pub and although the concept worked initially, the pub started to falter and was on a downward spiral. HCPL decided that the format wasn’t working and the best course of action would be to lease the business.

After hearing a lot of good things about this pub, we booked a table for small group of friends for a Saturday night. We were asked to preorder, which wasn’t a problem. We arrived at the booked time and ordered some drinks. Starters were very slow to come, probably over an hour. They looked like they had been bought from Iceland and weren’t very good. We then waited..and waited for our mains, even asking at the bar how much longer they would be. They eventually came and we’re ok, but considering we’d pre ordered the wait was way too long with no apologies And who puts a pie in a bowl? Only once we’re we asked if we wanted any more drinks, each time we had to go to the bar and ask for someone to come and take out order. So, poor service, a long wait for food and just ok food. Hope this was just a one off.

I'd love to give this delightful pub 5 stars: lovely simple food, good portions, nice bar lady, good beer, log burner etc etc. We two walking women arrived at early lunch during our walk to find three separate men (two old, one youngish) in situ. Not one of them looked at us, said (or even nodded) hello, and the youngish man at the other end of our table gave off positive waves of negative vibes as he sat with ears plugged in at his laptop. I appreciate that he might have been working, but even the slightest acknowledgement of our presence would have been polite. So...'community' pub? Hmm. I can't say we felt welcome. Oh, and noone apart from the barmaid said (or nodded) goodbye either. A bit bloody miserable tbh.

By 8.30 there was no sign of our food which we had ordered an hour before so we decided to call it a day . We explained to the Land Lady who seemed surprised at our decision to leave. As were departing, the Land Lord was apologetic and said he would contact us the following day with the offer of a complimentary meal. A real community pub. Food is always good, service can be a little slow, but worth the wait. Friendly and a good atmosphere.

Had a great meal here for our anniversary. We wanted somewhere small, and local and was recommended The Fleece Inn and it did not disappoint! Really friendly staff and the chef is a marvellous cook. We had a couple of the mains from the specials menu and they really were fabulous. We will be coming here again for some really excellent value for money food, great staff and comfortable surroundings. Thanks to all at The Fleece!

The pub bar is a buzz obviously very popular - groups chatting and enjoying their evening. The restaurant is quieter. The service is brilliant and many faces look after you, working together well. You don't have to wait long and the meal arrives, and wow the food is delicious. For instance, a steak was divine, and the lasagna is the best I've ever tasted, all at descent prices. They deserve recognition and clearly justify Gloucestershire pub of the year 2018.

Popped in here for dinner whilst on holiday. Decided to opt for the steak which was really lovely and tender, all in all a very nice meal.

If you are ever in the area and wish to experience a quintessentially English pub then The Fleece Inn in Hillesley is an ideal spot. As a Free House, they offer a variety of excellent beers, the service is most hospitable and the food is great! The ambiance and decor within the pub is equally pleasant!

Didn't realise it was a community owned pub when we booked, but it shows in the charming, helpful, if a little amateurish service - which is no bad thing sometimes. There was an interesting range of real ales and a surprisingly ambitious menu, from which 4 of us each chose different dishes and all pronounced satisfaction. They were served very promptly and were well executed and presented. My Mexican Chilli choice was good and fiery enough, and the ham, egg and chips (always a benchmark dish) was especially good; perfectly cooked eggs, a generous slice of "real" carved ham and cracking chips. A delightful experience and though we are not from the immediate area, we agreed that a return if we were nearabouts would be a great idea. Well done the community!
