The Fleece Inn in Calderdale

We were welcomed in to the cosy warm pub on a wet dark evening by a lovely host. He showed us to our table which was at a lovely wooden table in a room decorated with autumnal wreathes. Such a lovely atmosphere. A smiley waitress gave us our menus & offered to take a drinks order. The menu was wonderful & I really was spoilt for choice. My friends & I decided what to eat & it turned out we all chose the same thing, sea bass risotto. The risotto was cooked to perfection with a beautifully cooked sea bass filet on top with 2 gorgeous scallops. The taste was unbelievable & I am dribbling writing this review. We were too full to have a dessert, however we did order hot drinks. The coffees & hot chocolate were made to perfection by a lovely young man at the bar. All staff were so welcoming, smart & knowledgeable about the menu. We will definitely be back for more soon.

Very dissapointed with this venue, at a family wedding the waitresses was great, however the staff behind the bar where terrible, the service was really poor and very slow. I spoke to the general manager who i found to be very ignorant and thought he was above everybody, i overheard him speak to some of is staff with pure disrespect. The venue is nice but the experiance was terrible, if you are thinking of hiring this venue bewarned. Mr Smith T

Really wanted to like this place but too many negatives means we wouldn’t return. Lovely looking from the outside and wonderful views. Room was ok, apart from the mattress which definitely needs replacing, big dip where there used to be springs, nice decor and clean, the bathroom, unfortunately was so small it was impossible to move around in. The entrance door which allowed access into the rooms had no soft closer fitted so every time someone came in or out it slammed shut, not great when people were coming and going, raucous, all night!! Check the CCTV!! Resulted in a very bad night’s sleep. Same in the pub too, slamming doors! Evening meal, as advertised on the website, was supposed to be 3 courses, and I quote: “Enjoy an overnight stay for 2 in one of our en-suite luxury king-size bedrooms, a delicious three-course evening meal & a full cooked breakfast in our award-winning restaurant for just £149” I checked before we ordered and was advised it was £30 per person towards food so if you did want 3 courses you would be very limited as to choice so we settled for 2 courses. Would be better if this was made clear before booking. Staff member who served food came across inexperienced and literally dumped the plates on the table. Food was just pub food, nothing exceptional, nothing to get excited about apart from the breakfast, which was excellent. Wished we’d gone elsewhere, will do next time

This is a lovely inn with magnificent views. They have a large terrace to take advantage of the scenery in the warmer summer months. The inn is very well maintained, the dining areas really well set. We went straight to mains, two of us opting for the Salt Aged Burger, bacon, BBQ pulled pork and cheese, served with slaw and fries. My wife opted for the sandwich of the day which was goats cheese, and that was accompanied by a soup, which was not as described but very tasty, and fries. Will definitely go back sometime, God willing, hopefully in the summer to enjoy the views from their amazing terrace area.

I can’t recommend the Fleece enough for your special day. It was amazing, they couldn’t do enough for you on the day nothing went wrong it was so special! The venue beautiful, the food was out of this world. We had the belly pork starter, beef cheek for main and the best sticky toffee pudding I’ve ever had! Everyone kept talking about it. We really did have the best day of our lives and it’s all thanks to this amazing venue. Please book them for your wedding you won’t be disappointed ❤️😍

Excellent from start to finish. The service was spot on, every member of staff was lovely. The food was all brilliant. I had scallops and pork belly to start which was delicious. Then I had the steak and ale pie, beautiful and a perfect lemon meringue to finish. Great to find somewhere we can go out and both enjoy our food. Will defo be going again. Lovely pub, staff really nice and food was great, I have to say though our room was very small and had damp on the ceiling which made my husbands chest really bad with his asthma,bifolding door into the bathroom was hard to open and when you flushed the toilet it made a hell of a noise the only reason why we didn’t complain is that we dropped our bags in the room and went out to see family so never came back to the room till late and was only the next morning we noticed how bad the room was but was too late to change as it was the wedding that day, this room would be so much better as a single room with a smaller bed and half the price, I’ve been in very nice rooms for much less than £120, I would stay here again in a different room as I saw 2 of the other bedrooms that were slightly bigger so if this review helps don’t stay in number 6

Been hear several times as ever food / staff always perfect. Wedding open viewing afternoon, very busy with potential takers seems a good venue. We looked at booking a family gathering approx 40 guests. With elderly guests but no disabled facilities. What a shame as venue perfect. Will keep looking. Will still call for meals.

Shocking service Terrible meal - had to send sandwiches back as they were cold when they arrived when they were supposed to be hot pulled pork and melted cheese- the cheese was still Cold and not melted!!!! When they came back from the kitchen it was obvious they had just been out in a microwave to warm up - but they were still luke warm !! Needless to say we did not eat them! Shocking and we will Not be returning Very disappointed after going to the fleece for lunch for a good number of years!

Beautiful location, although sadly miserable weather. Generally good service despite being very busy with a wedding party. The food was excellent and good value.

They had a wedding on and were unable to maintain timely bar service. We waited 35 mins for drinks and in the end I went up to the bar to get them myself. Food great as usual.

Set on a Yorkshire Hill, you'll get amazing views from the outdoor area & the staff were great too, not over the top asking if every mouthful was a delight, they were there when needed & the food is excellent.

We visit The Fleece 3 or 4 times a year and always enjoy our visits. However, we did notice the menu has less choices than in the past. There was a wedding reception in progress so it was a little noisy at times. The staff were most efficient.

First time that we’ve visited this venue. Everything was fantastic and the view’s are beautiful. Will definitely call again.

Very nice and relaxed Sunday lunch, I didn’t have a traditional Sunday lunch and chose the sea bream on prawn and scallops risotto it was lovely , my wife had traditional roast beef lunch which she enjoyed, wasn’t over busy however this made it a little too quick , we were in and out under an hour when we normally expect a more relaxed approach

Beef Sunday lunch was cooked to perfection BUT just don’t get the sweet red cabbage

The Sunday dinner was good as always but I’ve marked it down as the portion size was on the small size and wasn’t consistent with other guests near by, we both agreed that the dinners were smaller than previously

Received a warm and friendly welcome. Taken to our table straight away. Drinks ordered while we looked at the menu. Food order taken promptly and delivered in an appropriate timescale. Food was excellent and value for money

First time eating here but we’ll definitely be back. Starters and mains were excellent and the idea of a small, sweet treat in the form of macarons and brownies was a perfect way to finish. Service was similarly good.

Went for a family meal and was disappointed compared with previous visits. Staff friendly, starters were good but main dishes were disappointing, Caesar salad tasted very fishy and too much lettuce, fish platter the fish tasted strange and later had tummy ache, the steak didn’t taste of much and my husbands fish and chips were not good, the food was overpriced and felt liked I’d been ripped off.

I would not normally write a review but feel I need to. When we arrived we were placed at a table next to the door. It kept constantly banging and when we asked to move the waitress said all other tables were taken without giving it a second thought. After 5 mins of this we asked again and were moved pretty quickly but first impressions count and it felt like the first waitress either couldnt be bothered or was being awkward. During our visit no other free tables were taken by other customers. I ordered a steak, it felt like I was eating two different steaks. Clearly it hadn't been left to rest and the first few mouthfulls were as tough as old boots. I let it rest and the steak was completely different after 5 mins but other food had gone cold. Two very simple things to rectify but extremely important when dining out.

Our experience on the night was very poor. Had been booked 6 weeks but was put on a table for six by the entrance,with only the tills as a view. The service was patchy,the food was good. We did not leave a tip and my wife and I will not return to eat there.

This was our first visit to The Fleece and it won't be our last. Service was excellent, and the food was superb.

My room was spotlessly clean and had everything I needed ( ie hairdryer, shower jel and tea and coffee). The bed was comfy ( a little soft for my personal taste but very comfy) with very good quality pillows. Normally in hotels I need an eye mask due to too much light, but here the room was nice and dark, giving me a good nights sleep. The hotel is on a main road which is noisey in the day but even though my room was facing the road it was quiet at night . It didn't effect my sleep. The bar area was nice with friendly staff. I was a bit disappointed by the choice of beers , in a countryside Inn I would have liked some local real ales. But I did have a nice pint if Timothy Taylor. I was disappointed that I stayed during a very wet British summer because the beer garden area looked stunning. Hopefully the sun will shine on my next visit. Evening meal in bistro lived up to the 2 AA rosettes . The wine was good quality and reasonably priced. The staff are very friendly and welcoming and service is efficient. Although it's a nice small menu I was spoilt for choice . A good mix of traditional dishes and dishes with a nice modern twist. Plenty of fish and vegan options as well as steaks. One thing I don't like is when restaurants put a bit of paper on the plate under the fish and chips . I don't get why they do it, its not needed . Overall great stay . It deserves the AA stars.

Staff were very friendly and welcoming. The food was well presented and tasty. Nice local flavours ( i had Yorkshire cheese with fruit cake for dessert) and some modern twists wirh items such as kimich and curry mayo. The portions were filling . Serve was fast but not hurried. A nice enjoyable meal

We thoroughly enjoyed our Sunday lunch at The Fleece. The food was delicious. We had the vegetarian roast and a beef dinner. We were both impressed with the selection of vegetables and the Yorkshire pudding. The venue was relaxed and had a lovely atmosphere. We look forward to going again soon.

Live locally but not eaten there for years, friendly greeting, although busy with a wedding party who all seemed to be having a great time we were looked after very well, not rushed went at our own pace. Good choice on the menu well cooked nicely presented without being too fancy. Manager and staff were friendly and efficient. Had a great experience with our friends. Will certainly not leave it as long to eat here again. Our compliments to the chef and all the staff.

Delicious food, large portions with good quality ingredients. The staff were both fairly new and couldn’t answer all our questions about the menu but they were really friendly and pleasant.

We’ve had some amazing meals here in the past but unfortunately, this visit was disappointing. The service was excellent, but the food I’m afraid, not so. I ordered the aged steak burger - it wasn’t! That description leads one to expect a hand pressed ground beef burger but instead, the one presented to me was a supermarket style meat paste burger with a decidedly rubbery consistency. To be fair to the staff, the service was excellent, but the standard of food really let the restaurant down. They need to up their game if they’re going to retain discerning customers. I wonder if it has changed hands since the last time we visited?

We had a faboulous family meal at The Fleece on Sunday afternoon. The food was fantastic as ever and the service great. To be honest, I don't think we could fault anything. Thank you!

Decent food and good atmosphere on the Terrace outside. Whilst the outside area is self ordering, need to ensure cutlery and condiments are well stocked to avoid any frustration

Been many of times and always a great experience although this time around it wasn’t. Sunday dinners weren’t the best. A spoonful of mash, the beef was really really fatty and hardly any gravy. Daughters pizza and chips came late. The Pizza was cold and the chips were scorching. I would still return as this is the first bad experience we’ve encountered after many visits. Staff were fab as always, especially alysha!

Food and service really good. Roast dinners need more gravy - this is Yorkshire after all!

Wasn’t as impressed with the food choice as I have been on past occasions. Menu was a lot smaller and a lot of fish options which isn’t my cup of tea. The food I had was good but would have liked more choice.

Food was really good. Only negative was the shell that was in the dressed crab (main course) which we told the waitress, who really didn’t appear to be bothered. Slight delay in getting some condiments with the main course too. Won’t stop us coming back but it’s the small details that make the difference between occasional visits to regular visits

Lovely venue with friendly service. However the food was a bit disappointing in particularly the Ploughman’s lunch which may have looked nice but the ingredients appeared as though they had just been purchased from a supermarket, it included a standard porkpie, McDonalds type fries, bit of brie , thin sliced meat and a small bread roll, the type you just heat up in an oven. I missed the fresh sliced bread, pickle, cheeses incl cheddar and just lacking the special touch you expect when in a nice establishment such as this.

The meal was very good but not "fine dining". The noise level was a bit high but all my party had an excellent evening

A beautifully situated Inn with a great outdoor decking facility.The food choices where excellent and one of my party was vegan she was also pleased with her options.The food itself lived up to our expectations and was served by Joe a very attentive and pleasant young man.

Food was average, the steak I had was a little overdone and there was a number of items on the menu which wasn't available. My wife ordered a cocktail and then was told they had no cream, which I would think would be a staple item in a cocktail bar and restaurant.

The pub and restaurant are fab, really nicely decorated and very clean. All staff are really friendly and will accomodate where possible, the food is incredible and service prompt.

Disappointed that menus on website did not reflect what was actually on offer. Would have liked to eat on the terrace but very limited unless you want burgers or pizza. Wouldn’t have come for lunch had we known.

The service was quite good when we arrived, but as more guests arrived. It appeared that they was short staffed and it took quite a while for our food to arrive. But overall everything was very satisfactory l, things could have been executed better. The food was absolutely awesome though.

Been here a few times over the years and always loved it but the food this time was poor if I’m honest . We had beef Sunday lunch and a steak between us steak was ok nothing special but beef was tough and very fatty veg was just warm and almost raw which I didn’t mind but not so good for others I guess . Overall poor value for money because it isn’t the cheapest place to eat . Staff and service were very good although they got the drinks order wrong they were very efficient pleasant and polite .we noticed another couple send their meals back while we were there as well .I wouldn’t give our experience more than 4out of 10 on this occasion sorry

Unfortunately one of our burgers was cold and the pizza was undercooked. Twice our round of drinks didn’t arrive so we’re taken off the bill.

Dodd was ok,menu a bit limited. Service was at best average with several mistakes with errors on the bill.

The food was amazing and staff were lovely and very attentive. would definitely recommend!

Very good food and service throughout our experience

We held our ceremony and reception at The Fleece. It was the perfect wedding venue. The picturesque views surrounding The Fleece set the back drop for many special photos. The staff couldn’t do enough for us and were on hand to ensure every little detail was perfect and that the day ran smoothly. We would like to say a HUGE thank you to Carrie-Anne and the events team for making everything come together. The food was amazing and the canapés were delicious! The rooms were incredibly cozy and our guests enjoyed staying in them, the bridal suite was fantastic too! Once again thank you soo much to everyone at the fleece for making our special day truly amazing! We would highly recommend the fleece to anyone!

Lovely food and a nice atmosphere. Premium pricing. Staff are on hand. Was seated promptly and drinks were served quickly. Meal came within 5 minutes of ordering. Would reccomend.

Nice atmosphere & environment, food was poor and overpriced for the quality received

Food was average. Ordered eggs florentine and barely any smoked salmon. Eggs were not runny and it was not served on an English muffin but on a bread bun. Coffee and orange juice was nice. Friend ordered eggs Benedict and it came with bacon not ham which was on the menu.

My wife and I go to his restaurant for lunch a couple of times a month and we've not been disappointed yet. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The menu is quite comprehensive and the food we've chosen has been delicious.

We often go to the Fleece for lunch with customers, and we are always impressed with the varied menu, service and attention to detail. We can't recommend the Fleece highly enough.

Bank holiday Monday treat, we both had the roast dinner and it was perfect, the beef tender and cooked just right. Service great. My only disappointment was that I looked at the menu on line and was looking forward to one of the dishes but the menu on offer was a much reduced version. Maybe because it was a bank holiday
