The Fleece in Kirklees

Called in today for lunch, having never been before we didn't know what to expect We were greeted very pleasantly by a lovely lady and took a seat The menu is good with plenty to choose from and we opted for the sharing fish platter Now this is where the wow comes in, it was HUGE. All beautifully cooked and fresh, delicious pieces of lightly batters fish with accompaniments. There is enough in the platter for 4 people and as there were only 2 of us we had a great doggy bag to take home for our teenage son. We will definitely be back to try the Mexican platter recommended by the lovely lady at the bar, and highly recommend this lovely country pub.

If you want to experience first class food,Fun,attention to detail & hard working dedicated staff this is the place to go! Always busy always friendly & always accommodating. Plus the village shop is so well stocked to the left adjoining the pub. Well done Shirley!!!

What a fantastic country pub. Truly the best pie I’ve ever eaten. Such a lovely atmosphere, welcoming and homely. We now want an open fire in our house. Lovely relaxed service too.

Tricky review as the pub is lovely . Our experience was not great, which is unfortunate and all down to feeling most unwelcome. On a freezing cold day, we were told to go outside as there was no room for dogs in the pub . We would have been happy to stand inside.. A few days later Popped in for a drink bearing in mind the pub was 90 percent empty and was told quite abruptly to sit there as you are having a drink . as the rest of the tables were for dining. All tables were unoccupied ! Even if they were reserved, I'd happily move if customers had come in . It's such a shame . It's a great pub in a lovely area, but my wife and I are totally put off by the cold reception and being made feel uncomfortable. Again, it was a lovely pub, but the kind welcome was as cold as it was outside ! We are publicans, and if we treated folk like this, we would end up with no customers . Luckily, you have visitors passing through or holiday makers . Good luck !

A nice drive out to this traditional country pub restaurant in Holme apparently renowned for its pies. We opted for the Flagship steak and ale pie and one chicken and leek pie served with a rich gravy. We chose the chunky chips and vegetables to accompany them. We were not left disappointed,a proper winter warmer coupled with great service and friendly staff. A trip back is on the agenda for pie Thursday and we were advised to book in advance for this. Ten different pies to choose from,so we will no doubt be spoilt for choice.

Visited for breakfast a few times. The Fleece has a great homely and welcoming feel, lovely fire roaring on our recent visit and pleasant attentative staff. Breakfast exceptional... a good menu choice, hot, tasty and good value.

We've eaten at The Fleece now on a few occasions. The previous visit we were disappointed to find the barnsley chop was sold out. This time, we were lucky. Fabulous food. Excellent value and nice interactions with front of house. Friendly banter with Liam. Nice lad

We had a superb meal here with our friends. Two had cumberland sausage whirls and two enjoyed pies all with plenty of well cooked fresh vegetables. Ice creams and lemon roulade to follow were delicious. A thoroughly enjoyable time was had by all.

We went for their 'Pie Night', and it was fabulous. Truly delicious food, the best meal we've had in a while. I can recommend their Ginger Pudding—yum. It was also great value for money and very busy.

Love the Fleece - go regularly for lunch. Food was excellent as always but new front of house man absolutely miserable. Was ignored for almost 5 minutes on entering - no ‘hello’ or ‘I’ll just be a minute’. No smiles, no chat. Staff here have always been exceptional so it was a bit of a shock. Didn’t let him spoil our lunch though.

Very disappointed with the service, food was ok, the guy who took the order had no personality at all, was like talking to a robot, no smile no interest in anything, couldn’t even be nice to the children, I think the flies that were flying about probably had more personality than he did. I won’t be returning. When your spending a considerable amount of money it would have been nice to be treated a whole lot nicer.

What a lovely meal and traditional pub food done too a high standard. Made to feel really welcome on arrival by the bar staff and owners and our dog loved the fuss and attention given by the staff. After searching the local area for somewhere to enjoy a pub evening meal (accompanied with our four legged companion 🦮😂🐕) we were not disappointed. Very good portion sizes and all home cooked. Would highly recommend attending this as a place to enjoy relaxed surroundings, high quality pub food with a good choice for vegetarians and meat eaters alike. 5* experience.

Popped in for some lunch after going for a walk. Very busy but they fitted us in with dog included. Lovely meals, very filling. Lovely touch that they do doggie treats. Very friendly staff and lovely traditional atmosphere.

After a good couple of hours walk around the beautiful surrounding area, my wife and I along with our two boys (7 and 5) and our four dogs were ready for a drink and a spot of late lunch. The Fleece did not disappoint, the staff were welcoming, professional and friendly. Helping us choose from their extensive menu to make sure our children received a lovely kids lunch that they wanted, whilst my wife and I had adult meals. All of the food was lovely and well priced. A great pub run by a great team, who really made all of us welcome. We’ll definitely be visiting The Fleece again.

Do not go here if you expect a family friendly meal. They don't have a kids meal for a reason. We eat out regularly and this has got to be the most unwelcoming experience we've ever had. Would not go back, even if they paid us next time.

This was an amazing find. We had a lovely walk in the shadow of HOLMe moss. We called in after our 5 mile hike and had a wonderful meal. The beer was excellent it was steak night and we had 2 steaks and a bottle of wine for £30. We knew we would get good value but didn’t expect excellent food and service as well. Thank you to all the staff a great find and we will be back.

We went to Holmfirth for the day and came across the Fleece while we were looking online for a nice pub for lunch. Decided to pop over in the car and so glad we did. Some of the best pub food we've had. The steak pie was amazing and the portions were huge. Dog friendly too and sell little pots of treats for the pooches.

For his birthday, my husband wanted a good steak pie in a proper pub. The Fleece provided both, and in quality and quantity. The waitress, Margaret, couldn’t have been more helpful. I have a gluten intolerance and she brought me separate menus. I had plenty of choices. I selected the Sea Bass which was a huge portion and totally delicious. The desserts were also a delight. The food was cooked to perfection and very tasty. We have never had a bad meal here and will most certainly return. Thank you.

Booked last minute for a table of 12 including a wheelchair and highchair (we weren't the easiest group to accommodate). Very impressed by how well they were prepared for us and the warm welcome we received. Service was relaxed but efficient. Staff were discreet but very helpful. Everyone really enjoyed their meal and all the food was of a very high standard. The meat pies were lean and tender. Fish was white and succulent. We didn't have desserts as we were all quite replete. Definitely intend to return and try some of the other delicious looking meals.

Village pub with traditional fare. Always of a high standard. Staff friendly and efficient even if we don't see Shirley much. Good guest ales - pity we have to drive there.

Visited for a third time this last weekend and had another super meal. Family of 5 and all enjoyed what we chose. I had the vegetarian sausage roast dinner which was lovely. The others had fish pie, lamb pie, burger and Barnsley chops. Portions were as big as ever, hot buttered veg and a big platter of chips. Puddings were excellent too! Thanks for another lovely meal!

We visited the pub on a busy Sunday evening and were seated in the restaurant which felt a little neglected and lacked the character that the rest of the pub has. The food was average at best. The roast meat ( I had beef and my husband had pork) was very dry and served with what tasted like gravy made with granuals. The veg was cooked nicely and not too soft, but this didn't make up for the rest of the meal.

I was staying in the area with family. Had two meals, both excellent. The staff were friendly and helpful with being intrusive and the atmosphere was very relaxed. Would definitely recommend - and the meat pies are some of the best I've every had!

My first visit to The Fleece! It was busy but we got lucky and managed to get a table. The staff were all working hard to serve the busy indoors and outdoors area. We had the filled baguettes. My beef baguette contained so much meat! This is a proper pub doing proper pub grub!

Visited here at lunchtime, pre booked that morning via the website. Service fantastic and ran like clockwork to say it was so busy. All smiling and super friendly. As though proud to work there. Food was superb, absolutely faultless. Between us we had belly pork, liver, burger, pie and Cumberland sausage. Exceptional. We then had a few puddings, special mention to the gooseberry crumble tart which was gone in seconds. It’s a fair drive for us but we will absolutely be back.

What a lovely village pub. Great home cooked food and excellent service in cosy surroundings. We had the fish and chips, the sea bass and the steak and ale pie and all were delicious 😋. Portions were huge.

This is a homely welcoming village pub offering good food offerings. We had a selection of starters from excellent pate and prawn cocktail to a special of broccoli and cauliflower soup. For main we can recommend the sea bass and especially the pies which were superb and accompanied by good chips. I can also recommend the liver and bacon which was well cooked. Good well kept real ales available too. Well worth a visit if walking at the nearby reservoirs.

Amazing food, service and atmosphere plus dog friendly with a shop on the side which sells pies cakes and takeaways, what more could you ask for. We've had the pie and the cod topper both amazing go there hungry!!!

we'd driven past the Fleece during a few days in the area, and decided to visit for dinner. It's a lovely proper old fashioned village pub, and the ladies serving were friendly and jolly, always smiling. The place was very clean and tidy, the loos also very clean and well supplied which is a good thing! We had huge portions of very nice food, my husband had the moules mariniere as a starter and said it was big enough for a main course and the broth/sauce was lovely. I had garlic mushrooms on toasted brioche which was super, the sauce was so nice I pinched some of husband's bread to mop it all up ( could have done with 2 slices of brioche maybe?) . Then he had the steak and ale pie with chips, and I had a glorious pasta dish with goats cheese and a cream walnut sauce - with garlic bread. I was so full I could not quite finish it, but I wished I could have done! Definitely a place to recommend!

My wife and me booked for breakfast. We both ordered the full breakfast which came with unlimited tea or coffee. The breakfast certainly was a full one with two of everything. Also toast was included. Both managed to clean our plates. Didn’t need much else to eat for the rest of the day. Good value for money, can’t wait to go again.

Popped in for cooked breakfast on Saturday morning, the lady who served us was very attentive and friendly nothing was too much trouble. We had full English and sat outside, the food was very good quality and plentiful. Free top ups of tea and coffee included in the very reasonable price of £11.95. We will definitely return and would certainly recommend

Lovely homely place . However one staff in a busy restaurant is not enough. Could not order coffee , so After a 15 min wait . Paid the bill. One member of staff however hard they work is not enough .

Our book club was held at The Fleece last night. Staff experienced, friendly and on the ball. The food delivered was extremely generous, piping hot and best of all tasted amazing. Two of the eight decided they could fit in a dessert and were not disappointed. A great catch up for the book discussion, friendly atmosphere and fabulous food. Thank you, Fleece! No doubt we will be back.

We stayed just outside Holme for 2 weeks in July and this Inn came very highly recommended to us. The reviews of a great pub and restaurant that wouldn't disapoint, were truly spot on. Great food from the chef, great hospitality from the team and a great range of drinks to compliment each occasion, or occasions as we went many times during our stay and the menu and the specials boards never once disappointed. Just be prepared for their generosity when the meals are brought. Thankyou for the hospitality folks.
