Visited The Golden Cock over the weekend and had a wonderful time. The service was excellent, we were made to feel very welcome and were shown to our table straight away. I had the southern fried chicken burger while my husband opted for the steak and ale pie. Both were lovely, followed by the crumble to share for pud. All in all we had a lovely afternoon and will definitely be returning.

Its a pleasant village pub. I didn't eat there, so I can't commit to food. Children are welcome, but I didn't see play facilities, well behaved dogs are welcome

Very nice popular country pub with good food, service and atmosphere

Party for 8 catered for, pate needed a slice more. Salmon was perfect except the portion size of pasta with pesto sauce. Doughnut to finish. I was not has full for a 3 course as expected. Spent lots of money with over 6 bottles of wine. Everything was very good. Just a bit more on the mains . A 1st timer to the restaurant

Food was bland & sticky toffee pudding was accidentally served with foil from its packaging still attached and had to be sent back.

Good quality beer served in the bar at the same price as in their restaurant.

Lovely restaurant in a beautiful village and beautiful views if you take a short walk after your meal. The staff were friendly and the vibe was welcoming. The food was very tasty but all three of us felt the main dish portions were small (i only got 17 chips) On the positive side that left us plenty of room for desert which was excellent. If you like to have starters, main and a desert then the portions are probably fine and they won’t be wasting food. However we hadn’t been before and went straight for the main and compared with other places it wasn’t enough. Certainly a nice place to go again and try another dish from their menu

So much better now its under new management.Didnt eat this time, but the Moretti was great sitting on the benches out front.

We stumbled across this place randomly after searching for pub food Google. The food was absolutely gorgeous and the prices reasonable. We will certainly be returning. Thank you.

What a great place! Table for 13 of us. Preordered our starters and mains. All our meals were delicious, and served hot. Lovely staff, nice building and atmosphere. It was my first time there, but it won't be my last. Highly recommend 👌👍🏻

We booked for lunch in the bar to celebrate a recent birthday. The pub offers two menus; a full a la carte one and a mini menu at lunchtimes. Our server asked for our drink orders before we had seen the menus and on request told us all the types of lager available. Having visited the pub before we thought we were familiar with the menu but were not specifically told that the beer we had chosen was not included in the lunch deal (these were only listed in the small print). Had we known we would have chosen a different one. The food was very good and we finished our meal with a very nice mini pudding and a coffee. Unfortunately, the occasion went downhill from the moment we got our bill and discovered we had been charged separately for the beers. We queried this and were told they were not included. We felt that our server (who was also the manager) should have made us aware in view of the fact that we had not yet seen the menus but she was adamant she was not going to change her stance and we had to pay in full (our suggestion of just being charged the difference cut no ice). It was a pity that for the sake of goodwill she couldn’t have adjusted the bill as it was a genuine mistake on both sides. Our friend felt her birthday treat had been spoiled and we left disgruntled. It will be a long time before we go there again, if ever!

We came for our evening meal and loved the place. Lots of period exposed stone and timber beams and open fire place, a really nice place to be. The food was superb, cooked perfectly and piping hot. The service was excellent, friendly and attentive. As a family of 4 we managed three courses and a couple of drinks each and all for £130. Excellent value in my book and I definitely recommend a visit.

Ordered a side of Mac n Cheese, pointing to it on the menu - it was nice, simple comforting taste, thought portion was decent for a side. Bill came and it was a Main - if so, that’s a small main. Was told menu was new, they didn’t know it well enough to ask customers if they want main or side, told lots of reasons I should have known better. Odd response as several items are available in different ways/options. Would have been happy with compromise, but deflecting all responsibility onto me seems off (apparently I should have researched menu better to know it was also a main). Such a shame, really nice place, good food (small portions).

Had the light bite menu on a late pm Thursday. Small fish and chips and a pint of Landlord for £12 was excellent value followed by superb apple and raspberry crumble. Staff very attentive and friendly.

Spot on. In particular the fries, so many places skimp on the quality of the fries but not here. Dirty burger was fit.

Called today, Friday 14th March.. table booked for 3.. we had a lovely first time here, had main meals and drinks, food absolutely lovely, the atmosphere was relaxed.. deffo recommend this place .. we will be back.. lovely lady behind the bar, all smiles, well done to the chef x

Great countryside, foodie pub, with excellent beer selection and great staff . Dogs very welcome but only in the smallish bar area, not the larger restaurant area. Book if you're bringing doggo, but dont miss the treats and 'selfie" booth.

Excellent Sunday lunch,plenty of it

The Golden Cock Pub is a local gem. The food is outstanding - nothing on the menu disappoints, but the Southern Fried Chicken Burger is a standout. The pub's location is perfect for a scenic walk, and we love making the trip there as locals. The Sunday pub quiz is always a great time, adding to the fun atmosphere. Ben and Ellie, the owners, are incredibly welcoming and make every visit special. Highly recommend!

Been here loads of times and always been 5 stars but today's visit left a lot to be desired. Distinctly average at best, shame really.

A really great experience when we visited on Saturday 22 February with family. Polite and friendly bar staff who were more than happy to give us ample time to order our food. We all chose from the lunch menu. The fish and chips were spot on and a perfect portion size. Same with the burgers, my daughter had the haloumi wrap and said it was the best she has had! Our granddaughters were very impressed with the ice cream sundae choices and to serve these with little dishes of sprinkles, chocolate beans and marshmallows was an inspiration! They spent ages concocting their ice cream and successfully polished off the lot. Great pub, would very highly recommend.

We came here for a works meeting to venture out from our own pubs and we were very impressed! Nice, clean warm pub with a welcoming atmosphere. We all ordered off the main menu with some bar snacks as starters and I had half a chicken whilst my husband had the steak and our friends got the chicken schnitzel, all of which were absolutely Devine! Ben looked every us very well ensuring we had drinks and everything was okay. Will definitely be coming back. Well done Ben and keep it up, from Two Pointers and Derwent Arms! :)

Best Sunday lunch I've for a long long time

Great food great staff great great service. We had a table of seven and we all enjoyed the food.

Nice meal but ordered the fishcake and would have expected two as it was only small.

Booked for Christmas Day, food was beautiful and was served nice and hot! great service from all the staff also.

I was very fortunate to celebrate my 80th birthday in your upstairs room on Monday 30th December. The buffet was outstanding, such a variety of excellent food. The service was also excellent and all my guests thoroughly enjoyed the occasion. Many thanks, Pam and Richard Cook.

Appalling tried to get served and the three young bar staff look at you and ignore you whilst they finished chatting. Waited at the bar 20 mins and left and walked away

Worthy of a visit if you're in the area.

This is the epitomy of an English pub. Good selection of ales, good quality food, the rustic traditional decor you imagine when you think of a pub, and plenty of roaring fires. A particular favourite is the hand written notes detailing the pubs history in the toilet.

Stop here with the family as a last minute thing, we all loved our food with good service and a nice place to eat with it’s own good sized car park would definitely recommend if your in the area

We called for a beer after work as the weather was lovely for October. The bar had a nice atmosphere and the staff were friendly. The food looked good, thought we didn't eat.

I want to thank the staff. We were delayed by fog but were served, with all politeness and consideration of dietary difficulties.

Absolutely fantastic quiz and we were not able to get a taxi so manager took us home an amazing pub with customer service above any I have any seen thankyou so much x you need 10 stars

We paid our first visit here on Sunday 6th Oct 2024. We received a pleasant welcome and a good service in the small bar area before being shown to our table. One member of our party order the roast beef Sunday lunch whilst another ordered the three roast Sunday lunch (chicken, pork, and beef. The ‘roast’ beef was dreadful. It was massively undercooked and very fatty - so much so that it was inedible. As recompense the person who order roast beef received a free dessert. However, it seemed to take an age for the desserts to be delivered to our table. Then, after our table was cleared nobody thought to ask if we wanted anything else so we had to call out to a passing waiter to take our order for coffees, which also took an age to be delivered to our table. Sadly, we will not be returning.

On holiday in the area and booked and ate here. Really good menu, food delicious, staff very attentive, and fast service.

Very disappointing. As a family of 5 we decided to try here for a change. At a Saturday tea time it was quiet inside, we were shown to our table. This was very close to a table with a young family on, even though there were many more appropriate tables available. We were then left with tatty menus and sticky tables for about 15 minutes before we called someone over to get some drinks. Eventually we ordered food, this was also far below expectations. Two of us had ordered lasagne and paid extra for garlic bread the total cost of this dish then being £18! The garlic "pizza" bread was clearly from a supermarket and had been cooked to a crisp, the dish also came with the tiniest side salad perched on the side of a board. Another of us had ordered pie, this looked homemade but was mostly pastry. A mixed grill was also ordered which was the smallest ever with the steak being ordered medium to rare but came well done. This was a birthday meal out, we didn't complain as we all just wanted to eat at the same time without any fuss or confrontation. But after this experience we unfortunately won't be back.

Such a lovely lunch..we all had the pie menu.. including a drink,it was great value.. Really tasty and well cooked.We had two desserts and also the mini dessert and coffee .. couldn't fault it.Most of all the staff were extremely helpful and friendly and nothing was too much trouble..they made it special.

Had several visit to this public house it's only a 10 minute drive from where I live,it's a very friendly and cosy place, with a good size off street parking area at the rear,highly recommend a visit

23 of us celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Denby Dale Amateur Radio Club last night at the Golden Cock. What a super night we all had thanks to Ben and his staff. The food was delicious, well presented and super professional service from everyone. We were all seated on one table and to say that we had all chosen differently from the evening set menu the (pre-ordered) food was served exactly as ordered, piping hot and on time. Would really recommend this warm and cosy pub whether you’re a small or large group, thanks again everyone.

Very good all round pub experience

The booking was easy. The welcome excellent. The food was just perfect and the waitress EMMA did a wonderful job and is a credit to the restaurant.

Really can’t fault this place, excellent service and lovely real ale. Food is good, all freshly prepared. Lovely location too in Farnley Tyas.

We stopped in Holmfirth and needed a restaurant to eat, and found this pub/restaurant on the corner and decided to give it a try. Absolutely unbelievable food and service, we ended up getting engaged after the dinner as was planned. But every year we are coming back to this dining place as it was just outstanding quality. Well done.

2 of us went on a Saturday evening, not busy when we arrived but got pleasantly more so whilst we were still there. The food was excellent, a very good menu to choose from, I mistakenly chose a Mixed Grill which was brilliant, but for me too filling. I will go again, no doubt about that!

So google states that The Golden Cock is open until 12 on a Friday. At 9.30 the barman started telling us we hadn't paid our bill. At 10.30 he told us it was last orders. We felt totally unwelcome from 9.30 which in all honesty made us want to stay to annoy the rude bar man. No wonder the pub was absolutely dead !

Visited on a lovely sunny Sunday. Bit too warm in the sunshine so sat in the outside area shaded by a canopy. The menu stated sandwiches were not available on a Sunday but bar staff were very amenable and said we could order from the sandwich menu. Food arrived quickly and the piri piri chicken wraps were very tasty.

Nice country pub. decent food but they had run out of roast beef on a Sunday,,, must be popular... Nice had better and worse but will return. staff very professional and friendly.

Lovely pub with a practical outdoor space. Few picnic tables under a polycarbonate roof letting sunrays in. Dog friendly outside and inside (in certain areas). Car park for approximately 40 cars. Outside is a bit loud from delivery trucks, garbage trucks and guests driving in/out so if your dog is skittish consider sitting inside. The fish and chips as well as crumble were good and served reasonably quickly. The service was also good but the food has to be ordered at the till.

Food was good when it arrived an hour later

Food was quite tasty and not too expensive. However £13.40 for a pint and half of lime with soda and half a coke is absolutely ridiculous. Talk about ripping non drinkers off. Won’t be back

We went for our sons 18th birthday, took balloons and cake up during the afternoon. They were brilliant, they lit the candles and walked through the pub much to our sons embarrassment 😆 The service was excellent, very happy with our visit

Brilliant pub lunch to celebrate a family birthday. Everything was perfect. The staff were attentive and happy to help. The lunch deal including a drink was excellent value for money, well presented and tasted great. We were never rushed as you can be in some places and the pub itself is as lovely as the surrounding countryside. Thanks again to the staff, they were fab.

Decided to to have an evening meal after calling in for a mid walk pint. Ale good. However disappointed with the meal. Crispy prawns were frozen mediocre, processed breaded ones. Had to leave all the batter on the fish and chips as it was thick and soggy, not thin and crispy. Left feeling like I'd had a meal of lidl skin on fries and mushy peas. With sub standard battered fish. Husband chose rump which was cooked to perfection and he thought tasty. However the presented plate was fairly basic, with skin on fries and peas. That's it. Would not return, even though the staff gave good service

Me and my partner were frequent visitors. It’s a lovely country pub. However, yesterday might have just changed that. We picked a table that had nothing on it. No reservation sign. We were there for a while until these 4 ladies walked in. Apparently they had booked our table, even though there was an empty table of 4 right next to ours, they wanted the table we was sat on for whatever reason. The staff just obliged to what they said and told us “a booking HAS just happened and you’ll have to move”. We didn’t make a fuss as it looked like the 4 ladies were already doing that but I don’t think we’ll be coming back because of it, which is a shame as like I said to begin with, we where frequent customers along with our friends, especially in the summer months and it was us who always suggested this place. It’s a shame as it really ruined our experience with the place.

Had chicken rap with fries, nice light lunch, the bar area was busy plenty of walkers calling in and dog friendly too.

arrived 1:35pm on wednesday, after hiking . the lunch special £10 for a drink and small meal is worth to consider if you are not hungry, the berry and apple crumbles with custard was tasty and in good portion size. custard was come in a small jug. The kind waiter gave one more custard jug when we asked more. the belly pork bites were tender and delicious but they were salty due to soy sauce added. my recommendation for the belly pork bites is no added soy sauce. the small fish and chips was good.

Excellent Sunday roast - duo of beef and chicken. The latter was especially good: crispy and tender thighs. All veg cooked to perfection. Staff a delight, didn't bat an eye when asked for kids portion for the elderly parents (both with health issues, didn't need to state that though). Even the coffee was good.

I came with a small group of friends following a walk around the area on Monday evening. The pub was quiet but that doesn't bother me. We had a chat with the bar maid while she pulled our pints. There was a reasonable selection of beers available, more than enough to keep us all happy. I had a pint of Landlord as a bitter is my preference. The decorations on the walls were really interesting, a big talking point for a lot of the evening. Bar snacks are great, loved the pork scratchings.

Wow what amazing food. Had 2 meals there now and both exceeded my expectations. Great atmosphere and very friendly staff. Dogs are allowed and well catered for. Plenty of parking and a rear outside seating area. All in all well worth a visit.

This pub has been totally ruined.it looks mess .I worked there for 6 years with Peter Midwood. One of the best jobs I ever had.he would turn in his grave if he saw it now . Sticky tables Glasses piled up on the bar. 1 member of staff behind the bar ( no.personality) The toilets are a TOTAL.DISGRACE Outside at back of the pub a total mess The dining room is a shambles. The bar looks ridiculous that in the bottom bar . The food is lousy. What more can I say .I would give no stars, but not a choice The management have alot to answer for( you should ashamed ) It breaks my heart when I go there.not of my choice to meet friends.

Went recently for a buffet.. Food was cold.. Nobody else in there really do very quiet /no music or atmosphere

No food order but very pleased they had a lovely separate bar with wood burner, real ales and good selection of other drinks . Feared was going to be a pure eatery "pub".. other pubs should follow their lead. .
