Usually a great place for a drink but on this occasion they got the coffee badly wrong. Just like brown water - even the replacement cup so probably the machine. Hopefully next visit I'll have something better to say!

The Golden Cock staff were outstanding and incredibly accommodating given the current circumstances. We had a group of three households having a sit down meal and drinks following our Father/Grandfather’s funeral and we could not fault Claire and her staff. Very attentive, excellent service and helped our family to remember our Grandad in as much of a normal situation as possible. This is our regular, not so much our local, but will always travel to eat or drink at the Golden Cock.

This was our first visit to the Golden Cock, which has always looked appealing from the outside. Really nicely furnished, with a relaxed atmosphere. Felt very Covid-safe. Friendly staff - Claire served us. She's local to the area and very knowledgeable about places nearby. She was willing to accommodate a request for a starter and a side dish to make up a main course. The food was imaginative, very well presented and of really good quality and the portion sizes were just right. We had our dog with us so it was a nice touch that there was a water bowl by the door.We hope to visit again soon, with the rest of the family.

We visited the golden cock today on a whim and were pleasantly surprised! The pub was quite busy, even in the current circumstances, and all Covid awareness protocols were being abided by, which means they must be doing something right!I brought my sister and our two dogs for some food. The staff were all really polite and helpful when we arrived and informed us that they had some new menus out that we could take a look at. We had the fish and chips and the steak and ale pie. Both dishes were lovely and we will definitely be returning! It’s good to see a pub doing well in the current circumstances. Everyone was in high spirits and we had a great day out.

I’ve been to many pubs in my time, none of which come close to the customer service levels of this one. We haven’t been to the pub since the new owners left (thank goodness). But wow, I can’t put into words how friendly and hardworking the new owners are. They will do anything for you and at the same time both work their butts off!The Golden Cock has been waiting for someone with the enthusiasm and the drive that these two have.I didn’t get their names as they were so busy but I wish you all the best in your new venture. The food was delicious too!

Called for lunch today we both had sandwiches, small portions not the greatest value for money. I had the beef and mushroom which was really disappointing beef was not even edible, a really poor cut of meat I did raise with it staff who said I’ll let the chef know, but didn’t even offered to put it right, even in the current circumstances, £8.50 for chips and bread ?I’ll just vote with my feet and not go back again.

Come in here quite often to have a drink on a weekend as I’m local , however this Tuesday was the first time we have eaten here since the new management team have started. The lady who served us had excellent service skills , was friendly, polite and super efficient. The food was good ! Starters were great . We had the burger and the mixed grill which was on the specials board. Plenty of hot food . I would say good value for the money . Decent pub grub . I noticed staff reminding customers to wear their face masks when not sat at a table . Plenty of covid information signs , hand sanitizer available. My only suggestion would be is to have a better ciabatta with the burger xx

Visited spontaneously on a warm Monday evening after a long walk. We sat outside in the lovely beer garden, it was all lit up and very cosy. The staff were very helpful and friendly. However I do wonder about the track and trace system as there is a book to sign in in the entrance that is out of sight of the bar staff and I do wonder how this is policed if it is not visible? The food was served promptly, I had a burger. This was good, however I was not a huge fan of the ciabatta it was served with so I left theBread. My husband had the meat pie, he devoured this and advised that it was delicious. Good value for money. The beer was good and a selection to chose from. Would return.

The staff were amazing, looked after us beautifully and even had our drinks waiting for us as soon as we arrived on the third night. The food was god for a village pub, staple stuff but cooked to perfection. My wife ordered her steak rare and it came exactly as she likes it. The prawns to start came with a delicious tandoori mayonnaise and the jackfruit “wings” were different and a lovely change from the norm. The burgers are really good and the superfood salad is huge and delicious.Highly recommended!

We visited a few days ago, taking advantage of the current government scheme. Staff were lovely, but the food and service were disappointing. My steak pie was average, with a lot more pastry than meat, but the real problem was that the jug of gravy was freezing cold and had clearly not been heated at all. I only realised this after after I had poured it on my meal. The waitress spoke to the chef who said I would have to wait about ten minutes for another meal preparing, by which time my husband would have eaten his meal. I ended up therefore with my original meal being returned with the gravy scraped off and a jug of warm gravy. We opted for dessert, but we had to ask the waitress if we could order, then after at least 15 minutes we asked where our desserts were, she disappeared and returned to say they’d be two or three minutes, ie the order hadn’t been put through. They weren’t very busy so can’t blame it on that. Average at best, and I wouldn’t like to think we had paid full price.

Called in with friends after a walk and sat outside. Staff were very friendly and accommodating. It was their friendliness that tempted us to stay and order food as we only planned on outside drinks. There is a good area of outside seating at the front and rear of the building. The car park is being utilised in areas for more outside seating which is great in these unprecedented times. The outside area would benefit from a little TLC which is hopefully on a programme of upgrades with the new owners. Basic weeding, tidying up and sprucing up of the tables is needed. Menu is pub food and offers something for everyone including children’s menu. All seemed reasonably priced. We stuck to burgers and fish and chips. They were adequate and average. Nothing to rave about or complain about. They filled a spot and we carried on with our walk. Would I return? Yes probably as staff lovely, pub great location but maybe on the same basis drink and bite to eat when walking in the area. Not the standard of food to make a special journey and booking for. There are better places to eat in the area but the staff were friendly and I wish them well. It’s early days so plenty time to improve.

We went to the Golden Cock for our friends’ birthday evening out. This pub is local to us and we have been very disappointed over the last few years with the calibration of both landlord and food served there. However, to show our support for the new landlord we decided to give it a try. OMG! What a total delight. Ben, the new landlord is like a breath of fresh air, he is welcoming, charming, sweet, helpful and his good lady is delightful as well. Now, whilst the menu is somewhat restricted because of COVID-19, what they do serve is well cooked, tasty and filling and was served by the lovely Hollie. The chef, also called Ben (so for the sake of clarity shall be referred to as Big Ben whilst the landlord is referred to as Little Ben) is a joy to talk to. Big Ben has told us that the present menu shall bear no resemblance to the menu that will be on offer after Covid other than it will be just as tasty and plentiful as it is now. We can’t wait. When they found out it was our friends birthday, Little Ben came back with a birthday card for her from all the staff and at the end of our meal, Big Ben presented her with a high slice of chocolate cake with candles in and all the staff came to sing happy birthday to her. A better night couldn’t have been had anywhere else. Keep up the good work guys and we’ll see you soon.

Mentioned when ordering to be told I can only have the salad! Walked out and went elsewhere. Would have been nice if management had at least acknowledged the problem rather than laughing and shrugging. What was the point in us mentioning the allergy when booking. Absolute joke and a wasted afternoon when e could have booked somewhere that would accommodate.

Revisited the Golden Cock for the first time in 15 years for a pre- Christmas lunch with my son. What a change! Refurbished with a good range of beers and friendly staff but some of the worst food I have had for a long time. Long gone the lovely home cooked food instead we were served mean portioned, poor quality ‘factory prepared meals’. For example my soup of the day was small bowl of tinned minestrone soup. To make it worse the staff did not seem to recognise the pricing of their lunch menu two course deal and I was overcharged for this lacklustre meal. If you just want a drink the the Golden Cock is fine but if you want to eat vote with your feet and go elsewhere. I should have realised when it was not very busy on a Saturday lunchtime! I certainly will not be going back there again. Such a shame. It used to be a great pub.

Walking to the Farnley Cock has become quite a ‘thing’ for we and friends to do on Boxing Day over the years ... albeit that the occasional break has become necessary due to the pub’s odd tenancy issue! This year’s sortie from Almondbury was undertaken by one and all with great enthusiasm despite a variety demeanours resulting from a particularly ‘enjoyable’ Christmas Day.Progress up the valley, thru woodland and rather wet fields wasn’t that swift, but we eventually arrived in need of refreshment & food at 13-25 hrs.Beers etc were ordered en-mass and we the enquired about a bite of something to eat ... only to be told ‘we stopped serving 30 minutes ago’ .... ‘there will be no catering now until 3 o’clock’This news resulted in huge disappointment amongst all and sundry and those weaker willed than some (in fairness it’s entirely possible that the former hadn’t fed quite as well the day before as others) decided that they’d best grab something to try & equip themselves for the scamper back home.£5-50 was the reported cost for a selection of 4 posh bags of crisps and peanuts (ouch) ... I guess Alderey Edge prices are only to be accepted in Huddersfield’s most chic of villages .....Having suffered some indigestion in consuming the snacks but enjoyed the drinks it was the decided that a further pints were needed ..... and upon arrival at the bar we were told that we could now order some food if we wished ..... it was 14-00 hrs!We managed to resist ......Not sure what’s going on up there at the moment, but I don’t think we will be attempting to find out.

Vicki and Andy did an amazing job on Monday, catering for 35 people in the restaurant for a pre-booked Seniors' Christmas lunch, plus about 150 guests attending a funeral in the bar and upstairs room. It is credit to the new management that a team of ladies in the village were willing to help out and volunteered their services for nothing to run the Seniors' lunch and to help serve the buffet for the funeral. Those who attended the lunch said the food and service was excellent, and the people attending the funeral were also very pleased with the lovely fresh buffet. Well done Vicki and Andy! I visit a country pub on a Sunday to get a nice home cooked meal in a nice environment as a bit of a treat. What we got was basically pre-cooked and packed products warmed up. The starter was southern fried chicken you buy from a supermarket! Onto the mains, the cauliflower cheese was cheese with mush, Aunt Bessie's yorkshires, even Aunt Bessie's roast potatoes!! Then the biggest sin of all overcooked dry beef with Bisto gravy!!!

I have just read the review of a party that were in on Sunday, the 5th of October. We saw this party arrived just as we were leaving. Their review inspired me to write this.I came for a meal with my little girl and we waited for a long time to be served. When the food arrived we were so shocked it was really awful my Sunday roast dinner with the nut roast was just swimming in fat and so greasey and the vegetables were very small portions. My daughters cheeseburger didn’t have any cheese and was overcooked and tasteless with no trimmings. When I came to pay I told the manager that the mail had been awful to be honest. He said that yes we had had to wait a long time but there was nothing wrong with the food. He said that we should expect to wait as it was not McDonald’s! I said that to be honest the food was a lot better than McDonald’s! So he waved his arms and said ‘well go to McDonald’s then’ he then pointed out the door and as we turned to leave he shouted after us “and don’t come back!“

I have been patronising the Golden Cock for many years having grown up nearby. I understand it's under new management again and I really hoped they would succeed in making the pub a vibrant hub of the village. However, they have much to learn about custom service if they want to affect repeat custom.

I really would have loved to give it 5 stars for the lone guy serving behind the bar and waiting at tables whose staff had all let him down however his chef let him down far more than this that didnt come in. The evening started off well with a free glass of fizz for Jean whose 90th birthday we were celebrating. Then we waited nearly an hour for starters which came cold, lone guy apologised profusely and gave us 3 bottles of wine , there was 11 of us. Starters were taken and came back hot. They were very tasty and we hoped thay everything would now be great. Again there was a long wait until mains, by now lone guy was joined by another. My friend and I had ordered the seasonal salad which came with crunchy leaves , Mediterranean roasted vegetables and beets...it arrived with no vegetables or beets but a dollop of couscous. For medical reasons I am on a low carb diet and therefore shouldn't eat couscous and my friend doesnt like it. We asked what had happened to the Mediterranean vegetables and beets, the chef forgot apparently. My friend sent hers back and forgo a main course I ate chicken and tried to pick around the couscous. Another member of the party ordered a medium rare steak and got a rare she asked for it to be cooked more but instead she had to wait for a whole new meal which I know they thought was the best option unfortunately the steak was cooked exactly the same. It was a huge shame for what should have been a great night celebrating a 90th birthday instead it turned into a Whitehall farce with one poor guy let down terribly by his staff. It will be a while before we try again

Just nipped in to our local to see meet the new managers and try out the food, although the owners were not present we were looked after by a very well mannered guy that took care of us and accommodated my needs for my 4 month old baby, the food menu is new and we thought it was perfect! Great variety of 'pub grub' good children's menu and all adults really happy with our mains. Steak pie was very tasty! Deserts were amazing! I had the trio of deserts, all 3 were delicious! Hope people come back and support our lovely local, we will certainly be visit on a regular basis from now on.

We came for lunch as a group of six. We were one of the first people to arrive at the pub. It was bank holiday Monday there was more staff on than customers at the time of serving. 6 sandwiches took almost an hour to arrive. When they did arrive the cooked sandwiches were very dry and over done. Three sandwiches were supposed to a have a poached eggs on top and all three might as well have been hard boiled eggs. My mother didn't eat her prawn sandwich because the prawns weren't fresh. I tried one and it was just like rubber no flavour what's so ever. My dad did enjoy his brie sandwich tho! We didn't complain as no one came out to see to us in the following 40 mins we were there. I've really enjoyed meals here in the past it's a lovely pub but I think I'd rather pay for and get better quality than what got served up today. I can only assume the chef had a cracking bank holiday himself and didn't turn up bank holiday Monday!

The chef walked out unexpectedly and the manager had no idea of how to deal with the situation, being extremely rude to customers. 4 local regulars will never go back. Went on to have a lovely meal served by excellent staff down the road.

Sorry to have to do this but what a let down! I’ve been looking forward to trying here for a while. The pub is lovely and cosy, the menus look good so I was quite excited for my food.

Arrived about 1400 and asked for menus, which were provided promptly. Ordered drinks and sat 5 minutes contemplating the menus when staff advised the “chef has left”. So no food? No, sorry. Then we said we need to go elsewhere. Barman wanted to charge for drinks but we said “No”. So, Barman asked for them back...!!! No problem, we left them on the table.

I asked for a vegetarian menu as there were no main meal options but they didn’t have one available. The waiter left the kitchen with some options written on a piece of paper from the chef. I’m aware that not eating meat is my choice but there are some people who cannot eat meat due to religious reasons. The waiter was very nice and apologised for the lack of options. Kids menus also needed printing out and were not readily available. Seemed a bit chaotic and easily thrown off with requests for different dietary requirements. I ordered a stuffed chilli but when it came out it was just a whole stuffed tomato with cheese on top. Very disappointing and and expensive meal.

Not a bad word to say about this place. Delicious home cooked food. Gorgeous setting and one of the few places that really feels like a proper pub!

Can not believe it took 2 hours for our food to arrive.the staff actually got annoyed with us when we asked how much longer the food would be. The food was nice when it did arrived but I actually felt sick I was that hungry . Not one member of staff apologised the long wait . Just not good enough

I visited when The Golden Cock was first re-opened and we had a fairly good experience, however we visited last night and it was fair from good! The menu is very very limited so 5 out of our party of 6 ordered 'Toad In't Hole' which we were aware had a 25-30min cooking time...50 minutes later our food arrived, it looked well presented, it arrived with a jug of gravy which we all poured generously on our meal. What a mistake!!! The gravy tasted like pure Salt, it was so bad that we had to practically wash it down with our drinks and scrape off what we could. we had waited so long for the food to arrive that we tried to make the best of it but we all left some (which is unusual for us as all foodies) when we explained our concerns to the waiting staff they didn't really care and just said they would pass on to the chef... very disappointing visit and will not be returning!

Went here with a friend for a few beers and ordered a plan burger. It was very basic just meat, lettuce, tiny portion of chips and not that good. We didn't check the menu because how much could a burger and chips be in a village pub be right? £15 YES £15... you can imagine my shock when the bill came. I work in London and don't pay that much in the city, when we asked the staff how they can charge £15 for a burger, we were told to remember where we are. For the record, where we were was in little village in Huddersfield, that has a church and a pub, that's it. These guys have lost the plot if they think they can get away charging these prices. My advise is, give this pretentious, stuffy, thieving day light robbers a very wide berth and go to the Foxglove down the road who don't charge that much or take a trip to Pax burgers or Rumpus burgers who again don't have burgers anywhere near the £15 mark. This place is a joke!!!!

A decent start on Craig and Nicola’s first weeks takeover from Ricardo. However, the honeymoon period is over and a revisit in May for a Sunday lunch proved how the standard has not been upheld. £14 a head for a chicken dinner with no finesse was way overpriced. Too few vegetables and hopeless excuses for Yorkshire puddings (too large, dry and flaky). Get down to the Jacobs Well just a couple of miles away for an example of a proper Sunday lunch... and it’ll be cheaper. The Golden Cock has long since had its heyday and there’s too much competition out there to serve anything less than outstandingly good food at a reasonable price. This place lacks ambience as well as value and quality for money.

How disappointing. First time we have been back after the change of regime. I am afraid we are unlikely to go back. The service was pretty atrocious - no wine list because we were told most wines on it were not available. First course - a tasteless fishcake on a bed of peas! Everything after that went downhill and was dull, dry and overcooked. Unlike the previous owners, there is simply no effort here to produce good food.

The second time we've visited in 6 months and disappointed.I think the pictures speak for themselves and after the 50 minute wait I expected excellence. What we got was : Good fish and chips, burnt schnitzel and sliced potatoes: really poor presentation.A Caesar salad which was really just a chicken salad with loads of dressing little chicken and 3 croutons served on a piping HOT plate. The game pie was freshly cooked but missing any identification on the game ! Add a bottle of wine and get a £93 bill.

No true vegetarian options on the menu. Had fish and chips. Chips reheated and fish consisted of huge batter which was rock hard and tiny fish. It was inedible. I will not be returning.

Had the early bird special two courses for £13. Really appreciate that the menu changes regularly. Had the starter of queenie scallops, black pudding, bacon followed by pork belly on a mustard mash and greens. Really good and polite and attentive staff. This was my third visit. It's now a favourite.

I am sad to say my bank holiday lunch was ruined by coming here. My party consisted of 4 adults and 3 children, who were made to wait over 45minutes between courses. Fortunately our children are well behaved and used to restaurants if not they would have been so bored waiting to be fed they would have misbehaved.

Lovely little pub in the heart of Farnley Tyas. Staff are friendly and know their products. The food was well presented and appropriately priced. The beer was well kept but I must say I have been on a few occasions and every single time the Ale glasses have been dirty. I don’t know whether this is down to them being left in the glass washer after they have been washed but for most real ale drinking this would be quite a put off. Also a shame to put good beer in a glass that doesn’t look too clean.

Myself & two others decided on The Golden Cock for lunch as previously had been ok before new landlord took over. We decided on a sandwich as we didn’t have a lot of time waited 20 minutes for order to be taken & a further 30 minutes for the sandwiches. The chicken & bacon sandwich was terrible, the chicken was so over cooked & dry that it was inedible, showed the ‘waitress’ when we went to pay, although she knocked the cost of the sandwich off the bill we will definitely not be returning as the service & food leave a lot to be desired.

Visited for an impromptu Sunday lunch today, and it was very good. Very attentive staff, friendy and good service. I had the most excellent lobster risotto to start, it was delicious. Both my husband and I had the roast beef, with some extra vegetables. The beefwas tasty and the portion size large. Along with two pre-lunch drinks and a bottle of very good Rioja, the whole bill was only £70 which we thought excellent value for money. Will definitely go again soon.
