Came for a family gathering and found the venue very convenient - and we stayed overnight after the event so this was even better. We were able to bring in food for the event and there was a good space available for meeting, chatting with drinks and sitting to eat the sandwiches and cakes. Staff were very friendly and the drinks were well kept and served by friendly staff. A good evening. The rooms are small but well-appointed and although no breakfast is served they frovide an inclusive breakfast pack with cereal, juice and snacks. Rooms seem newly built as an annex and have good facilities - double bed in our room was firm enoough - large TV and good shower in the en-suite.

Always visit, if I'm in the area. Cask ale is of good quality 4/5. The practice of invited catering vans arriving in the carpark, to provide food of varying cuisines, which may then be eaten in the pub is excellent. The staff provide cutlery, plates and condiments. What could be better than eating freshly cooked fish and chips whilst downing a pint or four?

This is absolutely the best, loveliest pub for miles around. The family that runs it are great. The beers are great, even the views across the green are great. Dog friendly, close by is a circular walk. The only downside is no kitchen for big food, but evenings see invited food vendors. Go there!!!

We went for a two night stay in Cavendish. Thanks to all the staff and locals that made our stay a lovely memory. Room was clean, Wi-Fi, bed was comfy and a breakfast basket each morning. The view was overlooking a picturesque village including churchyard. Pretty apt as it was near Halloween so creepy vibes if you have the imagination. In all a wonderful pub with helpful, happy staff.

Lovely looking pub but we stayed in one of the adjoining 3 rooms. The room was clean, en suite but fairly basic which we didn’t have a problem with. The issue was the church opposite which rang its bells EVERY 15 MINUTES ALL NIGHT. We didn’t sleep and would never have booked the room had we known. Beautiful village but DO NOT STAY THERE!

We spent a wonderful weekend at the Five Bells. Situated in such a pretty village. The rooms were very clean and comfortable. The host made us feel so welcome and nothing was too much trouble! They do food in the pub and the lovely food board we ordered was delicious. We were lulled to sleep by the wonderful bells in the nearby church. A lovely relaxing weekend. Will certainly be back!,

We stayed a night at The Five Bells before a sponsored walk. Although the pub does not offer meals, the landlady sorted out a really good breakfast for us, getting up specially on a Sunday morning to knock on our doors with the breakfast at 7am. She did not accept any payment as we were walking for charity. It was a real act of kindness and I would highly recommend staying over. The rooms were well appointed, with a comfy bed, and excellent en suite. The bells of the church ring regularly but once I was asleep they didn’t wake me.

My wife and I stayed overnight in the pretty Suffolk village Cavendish. We stayed in the delightful and recently refurbished cabin accommodation and enjoyed the beautiful view of the village green and adjacent church which is well worth a visit. The pub also has been totally refurbished and we enjoyed the friendly atmosphere and company. Every Sunday there is a meat raffle which raises funds for the charity “Cavendish in Bloom”. Under the new ownership there will shortly be food available which will make for an overall good experience. This is must for anyone visiting the Suffolk villages which again are so attractive.

This is a straightforward, unpretentious, old style village pub. We visited for lunch after a country walk. We were greeted enthusiastically and chose a beer from a small range of real ales. The landlady made us a sandwich; we selected from her verbal menu of a few simple and basic choices – there was no sign of a printed bar snacks menu. But we did eat and the sandwich was quite acceptable. There was little other custom. We visited on a cold miserable day. The pub is extremely well situated overlooking the village green and there are benches outside. In the warmer months this might be a nice attractive place to take refreshment. Overall our experience was acceptable but straightforward ant not exceptional.

Just past 12 on a Sunday I ordered half a raspberry and apple cider. It was cloudy and tasted funny but I'm no cider expert. As I walked outside I saw a man examining his pint of bitter into the sun. Which was obviously cloudy. We agreed and he took it back and it was replaced. I said my cider cloudy as well. 'Nothing wrong with the cider was the reply.'We went for our walk and came back and ordered three portions of chips. I said I fancied a small ham sandwich. 'Sorry, sir' only very large portions available he said, making a large plate sing with his hands. 'You can't do a smaller portion?'. 'No, sorry'Half an hour later, still waiting for our chips, a small portion of ham sandwiches came past on a plate, to people who had ordered after us. 'Would that be possible for us?' I asked. 'Sorry, sir, we've run out of bread.' That was very funny though-lucky I hadn't ordered cheese.I popped back in at 40 minutes after our order to see what had happened to the chips. I also noticed the label on the cider pump had been turned round, so presumably that was off as well. I was told the reason the chips were delayed was the the 'ticker system' had broken. It was only us with our three portions of chips and the ham sandwich lady who had ordered food at the time, so I am not sure what system was needed.Anyway, the chips arrived at 45 minutes and the chap was very apologetic. The pub is in such a lovely position on the green in Cavendish and it was a beautiful, sunny October day. I just think a little more prep was needed on that day.

My wife and I first went to this establishment soon after the management took over and were fairly pleased with the whole experience and pleased the new people were making a go of things, so much so that we went again some months later for a Sunday roast. Our mistake !!! The beef was from a packet you buy at a super market the roast potatoes and yorkshire were from an "Aunt Bessie" and things went downhill from then on. So you take your choice, a nice meal on the one hand and a rubbish meal on the other. probably what hurt as much as anything was the fact that I was charged the full price for rubbish. Undoubtedly my fault I should have refused to pay but I was still shaking from the shock of the meal. I have never been there since and probably will never go again.

Operated by young friendly staff for the younger generation but the quality of food left much to be desired. A glass of wine comes from a miniature bottle (as on a plane) and no fresh orange.Sunday lunch was abysmal, the roast beef being " well " done or nothing,we sent back the first dry over cooked offering only to get a fresher cut of the same. The whitebait was mostly batter and laid on a bed of lettuce, great if you enjoy warm lett lettuce. It's location is good, very scenic but I fear for its future, most locals don't want a TV blaring out whilst eating or tiny tots running between tables. The location alone deserves better.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

This should be the best venue in Cavendish and one of the best in Suffolk, given its idyllic positioning on the lovely village green, however it is cold, damp and sole less place. It doesn't help that the owner seems to like treating it as a private drinking club and gets through more landlords/ladies than a cheap soap opera. The new Landlord is obviously trying to turn things around and deserves some credit, and hopefully will get some support from the owner. We had heard that he was trying to improve things so a group of six of us decided to go back after many years absence. There were two couple is the dining area and about 6 or 7 people drinking outside and this seemed to be enough to provide the young lad behind the bar with enough challenge to provoke a rabbit/headlights scenario. The menu looked really quite promising until we found out that three of the six starters were sold out, (to whom??? That invisible man and his date must have been really eating for Britain!). Once he had written these down the lad wandered off, so we had to call him back to take our mains orders. There were three types of steak on the menu, a t-bone special and then a Sirloin and a Rump. My wife was first to order and asked for a t-bone at which point the lad announced that that was the last steak, (I forgot to mention, that by this stage he was leaning on the table next to me in order to write down our orders.) At no stage did he ever contemplate taking a drinks order, so we just trotted to the bar when needed, although again we got both undercharged and overcharged for a round of drinks!.A few other dinner lowlights included :Five soggy mushrooms on a bowl of green leaves, (garlic mushrooms evidently). The smallest portion of fish and chips I have ever had at a pub.Flavourless soup.Very slow service. When we had finished our mains we asked for dessert menus and the lad said no because the kitchen was now shut, (it was nearly 9.30 after all and we were the only customers left), so we had to ask the landlord of we could have desserts, which he did indulge us with. The Bells needs a complete make over inside and if the new landlord is to succeed in a turn around, (which I genuinely hope he does), he also needs some staff who can at least aspire to burger king standards of customer service if he is to have any hope.I stress that he has put some interesting things on the menu and does genuinely seems to be trying, so I do wish him the very best of luck and success. Cavendish is a lovely village and we have a nice restaurant/gastro pub in The George and it would be so be nice to have a decent relaxed family local, as The Bull is such and inhospitable place under its current management.Good luck, but you need some staff and investment to make this work.

After being recommended and reading the reviews of the pub I was very disappointed on their Sunday roast dinner. Four of us ordered which included the lamb, the beef and the half of chicken - The dinners arrived on dessert plates not dinner plates and were not warmed, 3 small roast potatoes, 2 hard cold Yorkshire puddings and 3 slices of meat, a bowl of veg between 4 with 1 serving spoon which was certainly under portioned and individual gravy boats graced our table. The lamb was tasteless with the mint sauce being a cheap sour brand, the beef tasted like the lamb - bland - the half a chicken resembled 2 chicken legs fused together with no breast meat and was dry and hard- being the first diners of the day it was not what we expected for £8.95 a head. On the plus side the young waitress was bright and cheerful and the manageress dealt with our complaint admirably.

My wife and I have just come back from a very pleasant weekend spent at the Five Bells. We wanted to have a quiet break in the countryside with a place to sleep eat and drink, and found the Five Bells by chance on this website.Cavendish itself is a quaint little village full of cottages and thatched roofs and Church The landlords have only just changed hands the weekend before we arrived so it was only natural that the was one or two small teething problems, these were only of a minor nature and were easily sorted. The pub itself is picturesque outside and inside is spacious clean with a good bar area and tables for those who like to sit in a restaurant area, the menu was varied and offered plenty of choice. There was a TV with Sports channels available and a dartboard.A good selection of beers, spirits, cider and shots are available. We ate both in the evening and breakfast and the food was of a very good quality, the breakfast was hearty and a perfect set up for the day.The rooms were made up of a renovated barn (3 in total) and are built of a modern nature but withholding the original beams from the old barn. The bed was comfortable and bathroom facilities of a spacious nature, and a television on the wall.On a slightly negative point (and this is no fault of the pub) The Five Bells assumingly got its name from the Church opposite and those five bells ring every 15 minutes day and night, to be fair you cant hear them from the pub but they are noticeable during the night from the rooms. We had a super weekend and really enjoyed ourselves and bearing in mind this was Rob and Carey's first week, they had settled in well and I am sure they will make this place work. I would recommend to stop here weather you just want to go for drink or have a meal and stay like we did.

we have eaten here before but not for a while and decided to come for Sunday Lunch as we had heard so many good reports about it and we were not dissapointed. Sunday Lunch had the usual roasts available as well as items from the main menu too.The Chilli Squid starter was lovely - a real nice "kick".I had the homemade burger with melted stilton, and I have to say it was one of the best burgers I have ever eaten in a restaurant, and it's so nice to see homemade burgers on a menu. The other family members had Roasts, which were also lovely, each with a small gravy boat and lots of fresh vegetables, including cauliflower cheese in serving dishes.Superb value too - We will be back!

On Sunday 21st February my friend and I had a magnificent lunch. Plate and food were hot and gravy was served innovatively in an individual small gravy boat. Very polite young girl served us making us feel at home. Meal was also great value. I wish this new establishment all the success it deserves. Dave B from Clacton on Sea.

Accommodation was excellent with newly built rooms in a barn conversion next to the main pub. Had a great dinner in the five bells and really good atmosphere in the bar with very friendly locals. Breakfast was excellent and the picturesque village of Cavendish made for a nice weekend break away from London. Will definitely return.

We had heard that new managers were in at this very pretty, well appointed pub/restaurant at one of the most beautiful settings in Suffolk. When we arrived we were greeted warmly in what was a lovely warm environment. We asked to see the menu and it offered everything from Light Bites and Starters, lots of Traditional favorites and a variety of Snacks and Sandwiches and Baguettes for the not so hungry. We were seated in the lovely restaurant area and had a fine pint of cask ale and gin and tonic (with lime too!!!!) while we waited for our food to arrive. When it arrived we were wowed!I had ordered the homemade Steak and Ale Pie which was absolutely delicious, whilst my wife had the homemade Beef Lasagne.........equally delicious! The portions were generous and very good value. They offer Sunday Lunch at £7-95 for main course, 10-95 for 2 courses and only £12-95 for 3 courses......we have already booked to take friends next Sunday. They have Christmas Fayre on offer throughout December at £21-95 for 4 courses and they have come up with a fantastic (at least we think so) for Boxing Day Brunch...... a 3 course offering, including Full english Breakfast and a glass of bubbles at only 12-95. Again we have booked for 5 of us.We have stumbled on a little gem where the service and welcome are first rate and the homecooked food is excellent!!

We stumbled upon this lovely country pub overlooking a beautiful village green whilst travelling through Cavendish - itself a lovely village. We were tempted by the menu and had a great lunchtime meal at a very reasonable price. We were told there was new management and we think they are doing a great job - well done. Apparently they will be starting bed and breakfast soon having recently reverbished the barn for accommodation. Will definitely make a trip back to stay overnight.

I have been to this Pub many times and grew up in the area. The pub has recently had a new management team in and we went for Lunch this Sunday for 12 of us. The food was amazing, freshly cooked and presented very well. It was nice to see there were other tables being served food and another large party of ten was also in but the service was great, fast, efficient and very friendly.I would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting a nice meal, in great surroundings with friendly and welcoming staff - Well Done Five Bells!

It's the second time the chips weren't as good as usual, not sure if it's just the potatoes or how they are cooked but left most of them and no one else at home wanted them either which is usual.

Busy lunchtime in restaurant and can see why. Although basic, the food was good and reasonably priced in this day and age. Sue and Colin were warm and welcoming.
