The Fish in Vale of White Horse

We were looking forward to having lunch on a Tuesday. We checked with Google to ensure the pub was open. When we arrived the board outside stated they opened at 12:00. We were a few minutes early and so we decided to wait in the beer garden. However, the men sat at a table in the garden - I presume they were members of staff - told us they were closed in an offhand manner with no apology for our inconvenience.

Generally good and standard English. I went for the Sunday roast. The beef could have been a tad better.

Fantastic experience - tasty food, very nice staff, and beautiful garden in the back (as well as super dog friendly!). Will definitely come again!

Came here for a friends birthday on a Thursday evening at 6pm. There were three of us and we booked in advance. Even though our booking was at 6:30pm, they were happy to sit us down and as the restaurant was mostly empty at this point we were given free choice of where to sit and opted for the conservatory area as it was brighter and warmer. Beofre sitting down we painlessly ordered our drinks from the bar and took them with us. The one flaw with this place is the lack of good non-wine drinks choice, but given this is a French focussed Restaurant, this can be forgiven. The interior definitely wasn't pub like and felt more like a European Bistro / Diner and it was lovely with great decor and tableware. After sitting down we ordered our food from the A La Carte menu which had a great selection of dishes for Starter and Main. After our order was taken we were brought some bread (malted seeded brown and white), butter and olives as an appetizer with a carafe of tap water. The tap water was always refilled without us having to ask which was excellent. When our starters arrived, we were pleasantly surprised by the presnetation. All our dishes looked great! I ordered the Cod, and my friends the Battered Prawns and the Cheese Tarte. The only criticism of the starters was that the batter for the prawns could have been crispier as it was a tad soggy. They weren't cold though! Other than that, they tasted delicious and there were no complaints. The mains ordered were two Sea Bass Fillets and the Gingerbread crusted Hake both of which were very well received both in presentation and taste, there were no complains here! Of course we had to go the whole hog and order two desserts which were the warm banana bread with ice cream and the baked apple tart with custard. They were both excellent and we didn't have anything to complain about. We ended our meal with tea and coffee which came with some wonderful chocolate truffles. Overall, The Fish delivered in both service, ambience and food with the service being attentive and of a high quality, the ambience making it feel like were in a French Bistro and the food feeling truly homemade and presented beautifully. Full marks from us!

Thank you for a lovely Mothers day meal. Three adults and a child eating, we really enjoyed all 3 courses - that's 9 very good dishes deserves 5 stars.

A treat dinner, an amazingly cooked three courses of wonderful food. It’s for a medium to higher budgets BUT worth it. Oysters, escargot, Dover sole, OMG. Really friendly and lovely staff. Definitely a great find for us, going back for sure.

Dined at The Fish today for Sunday lunch with friends. I have to say it was excellent, lovely friendly efficient staff and a really great atmosphere. Food cooked to perfection, between us we had the duck, the Sunday Roast, and salmon. The desserts were amazing. Would definitely highly recommend and can't wait to dine here again.

We came in here with fairly low expectations, having been passing through the area. Unfortunately not even our worst expectations were met. Sea bass was very mushy which I've never experienced anywhere before, and the vegetables it was served with were undercooked. The duck we had was stone cold and barely edible, to the point we had to leave it. Maybe we were unlucky given the rest of the reviews here are pretty positive, but overall a really staggeringly poor experience. At the end, having told the staff the food was bad, we were then presented with the card machine to tip... Maybe just unlucky but really wouldn't recommend this place, even in desperation!

We had an absolutely delicious meal at The Fish this lunch time with our friends. Between us, one had the roast, another the duck and us ladies had the salmon. All cooked to perfection and served by very polite and courteous staff. The atmosphere was warm, friendly and welcoming. The desserts were to their usual high standard - our favourite being the tart au pomme. All in all a lovely experience meeting the normal high standards we have grown to expect. We look forward to the next time. Thank you The Fish.

Lovely meal with friends & very good service

Booked a table for 7:15 on a Friday night ...... tried to order the oysters .. they had none ! .. next table had some ... tried to order mussells ..... both tables next to ours had some .... they said they had none! ....... you wouldn't expect them to run out so early on a Friday night..... reply to Mangers reply ..... The waiter could have told us the mussells and oysters were not available when sitting us down. Instead I spent 20 minutes decidng what I wanted .. oysters and mussells then when the waiter took order we were told at which point I had to quickly decide on something else .. sorry but definitely not a great experience

Had Sunday Roast at The fish yesterday with my family, was absolutely lovely. Great service and the food was delicious. Not to mention the desserts at The Fish are in my opinion the main attraction, fantastically presented, delicious and a great portion for the price. Thanks for the lovely lunch guys.

I was down visiting family & found this restaurant last year, was so impressed with the food I went back this year, absolutely great, I would highly recommend it to anyone. Will be back down next year, keep up the good work.

The lunch menu was nice, £25 for three courses. The staff were brilliant and out in the garden was a lovely atmosphere in the fine weather.

Delicious food and fabulous service

Food was incredible. Place was very quiet on a weeknight, which was fine for us. Staff were really lovely. The music was good and as it was our anniversary they played our first dance song on request.

A little bit of france in Oxfordshire. Straight forward consistently excellent cooking in a lovely setting with very beautiful gardens. Reasonable prices and very good quality. Who needs to go into oxford? Only on the drinks side it could improve - a second proper beer from a local supplier, and a french Crement rather than Prosecco perhaps. Wine list looks great but more choice per glass would be welcome….I was desperate for a glass of muscadet with my moules! Service was good and well paced. I am delighted to discover the fish and look forward to coming back to the garden.

Excellent Home Made food opposed to usual home cooked that seems to be almost every where these days! Obviously this takes longer but time to appreciate & digest each course, and the flavours !!! Fantastic outdoor dining area is great plus this time of year too. Last time I were here twas very good, just after Covid reopening, but now The Fish is absolutely Brilliant !!!

Popped in to the Fish for a relaxing lunch for the first time and what a pleasant surprise. The food was flawless and tasty. I had fish and chips. The service was excellent and friendly. We were served by Ilona who was very attentive and warm. The beer garden is a very relaxing place to be. Highly recommended.

We met friends here for a drink and really enjoyed it. The gardens are neat and the staff were incredibly good. They poured our drinks promptly, gave us a warning that the pub would soon close and just very friendly. Clean tables, clean loos and a very healthy selection on tap. We didn't have any food so I can't help there. I will go back when I'm nearby

One of the best places for dining in Oxfordshire. For a good beer selection though, go to the near by pub The George. Also nice Thames walk along the river just in front of The Fish.

Food was really nice and well presented. All home made. My family only speak French. Staff were patient and Chef went behond expectations by helping my family to understand the menu. We arrived at a very quiet time and was not overbusy for him to help. I will highly recommend the place. Water/bread was brought to the table without us ordering it as it is complementary in France.

One of the best restaurants my husband and I have been to! (And we eat out a lot) Wonderful, friendly service-nothing is too much trouble. Delicious food, of such high quality. The restaurant is in a lovely rural setting and has a cosy atmosphere. We will definitely eat here again!

Dirty food with an extraordinarily rude and arrogant front of house head waitress (Denisa Cotet). Denisa was a master of ruining what should have been a lovely birthday celebration. Actual food was mixed bag and very over priced. Group of six adults. Appetisers and bread not bad but then, the guest of honour, pulled a 6 inch long black hair from her French Onion Soup. Disgusting. Makes you wonder about their covid hygiene practices? As a courtesy, I discretely tracked down Denisa and showed her the soup and hair! Her response was sorry, there's no one with such long hair in the kitchen but I'll get you another!!! Another did arrive but by then everyone had finished their food so poor birthday girl had to eat alone. Not happy, I approached Denisa privately to suggest that some sort of gesture to the lady might be appropriate and 20 mins later they offered her a drink on the house without any further apology either to her or the table. Fair enough. Main courses were a mixed bag and I suspect negatively impacted by the extra wait for us to finish our appetisers. My duck breast was brown and like cardboard and the the crispy skin soggy and burned in places. Really nasty. Fed up with the whole experience we decided to settle up and leave. To our amazement Denisa had charged us for the soup!!! Finding this really laughable, one of our party discretely went to suggest to Denisa that this should be removed from the bill but, arrogant Denisa point blank refused and was really rude about it - that's just over about £5. Feeling ripped off we left with Denisa saying that she hoped we had enjoyed ourselves and would return soon (what planet?). I did confirm to her that with such unprofessional service and dirty food, we wouldn't be returning. Shame, as we have visited over years and with poor Sebastien (who has sadly passed away) it was one of our favourite places to visit.

Poor and unattentive staff. Slow service. Food of average quality but definitely not value for money as it is quite pricey. The soup even arrived with a large hair in it and the staff could barely bring themselves to apologise for it and even suggested that we may have planted it! Avoid - many better value restaurants in the area.

Another superb meal. We had lunch on Christmas Day. It was well organised, delicious food and festive atmosphere with crackers, balloons, party hats and poppers. Perfect!

Great place to stop for lunch. Super service, lovely garden and not far from Abingdon and indeed Oxford. Lovely choices on menu and food chosen well and cooked exquisitely. And just look at the champagne choice, you are in good hands. Just look at such an eclectic choice. I had the baked Camenbert, but next time will be the pigeon. Returned 1 month later, never disappointing. Super scallops

A very disappointing meal. I wanted something special for my cousins who had come from Berkshire for the day, and I booked well in advance. I had had a lovely meal there in the past. Admittedly it was June 2nd and very busy. We were prepared, therefore, to wait a long time for the meal to be served. However, what came was something of a shock. All meals lacking in taste and freshness, a rare steak when 'well done' was ordered, and one meal was near inedible and looked like something the dog had brought up. Well below the standard expected. Really, if they cannot cope with those numbers they should not overbook. We will not be returning.

We had a lovely anniversary dinner at The Fish this week. The food was delicious and the service very good. They were knowledgeable about dietary requirements and were able to provide gluten free bread without any notice. It was very tasty bread too. I had Caesar salad and monkfish and prawn tagine with coconut milk curry and my husband had crispy duck salad and seafood risotto. All of it was full of flavour and excellently cooked.

A very good Sunday lunch with family. However a very poor selection on real ales nothing local on tap. Also felt quick squeezed in amongst the tables.

I’ve been at the fish almost every day for 4 months now and the food has always been excellent. The staff are never anything but friendly and the chefs are lovely. A small team who work wonderfully together and make their guests feel at home. I would strongly recommend everyone visits!

Completely miserable service. Turned up at 2152 and waited 10 mins for service. Got completely hostile, rude service. It was the strangest thing I've experienced 😂

I dine to the fish since 35 years We knew very well Bastien who unfortunately left us too early A nice man! I phoned specially during the week to ask if they serve oysters on Sunday The reply was yes I ordered them straight away for two people on Sunday When I arrived no oysters and I was told I had to confirm Not true I phoned and ordered Why should I confirm again? Anyway very disapointed as I must admit I went there specially for the oysters I thought as an apologise I will get something Not at all! I missBastien. If I could do zero stars I would, was treated different to other customers , we didn’t get our bread and olives until 10/15 minutes of being there ,where as other customers had there’s straight away before they ordered drinks, we had our starters and didn’t get asked if everything was okay with the food , exactly the same as problem with the mains, the fish that we ordered was slimy and did not taste like it should! Not a good experience at all! Was very disappointed! Didn’t even want to pay the £55!

Despite a power failure just before midday thus ruining the chefs normal preparations. He managed to prepare most of the menu. Most customers were contacted and told that the restaurant would be closed. We along with two other tables decided to wait. We were handsomely rewarded. We'll done the chef.

They were short handed today but that didn't affect the quality of the food which was very good.Good atmosphere,one of the chefs came out to help the front of house team,clearing plates,taking orders and exchanging banter with the customers.We had starters,mains and a couple of drinks which came to less than £60.Lovely service and we'd go again.

I used to live in Sutton Courtenay 20 years ago and went to The Fish many times. I went back today for lunch with my mother in law, who still lives in SC and the restaurant was as lovely as ever it was 20 years ago. Staff were attentive and the food was super. I wish I lived closer as I would go more often. The conservatory is a lovely spot for lunch. Highly recommended and I hope that I can visit again soon.

When I first went in the fish the atmosphere was amazing the staff was very professional and the manager was lovely and really polite. The food was absolutely delicious! And served high standards and the food came out hot and didnt wait to long as I was hungry! couldn't help myself I ordered a takeaway to go with me and it's good place to go on dates and family oriented we will definitely come back to the fish again!

My wife and I have visited The Fish on many occasions and always been been very pleased with the excellent food and service but I am very sorry to say that on todays experience 18/07/21, the service fell exceedingly below the standards we have become accustom to. Our waitress (Daisy) seemed very uninterested and dysfunctional. The matter was made worse for us as for the first time we took family members with us after telling them how good the Fish was. After having our main courses we were left with the plates in front of us for an hour, and when the table was finally cleared there was no mention as to weather we wanted deserts. One of our party went to find the waitress to request the desert menus which were finally brought but with something of an attitude an no apology. The deserts did finally arrive but from a different waitress, we had also asked for a replacement jug of water as the weather was so unusually hot but that never arrived until we asked another waiter for the water. We declined the after dinner coffee as we felt that 2 1/2 hours for a two course meal was excessive enough. I am very unhappy because my wife and I have enjoyed coming to the Fish so much but this will certainly dent our confidence to return.
