The Fish Shop in Chelmsford

Probably lunchtime fish and chips is better. Seems fresher than the evening portions. The chips are often slightly undercooked. Seems petty I know but why are the staff so miserable? No smiles, chats with customers. Shame as it has so much potential. Would also be nice if the owners or Managers responded to these TripAdvisor reviews. Would be if use to them to improve.

Service was friendly and helpful. The chips are not cooked with the fish or batter so as a coeliac I managed to eat some and had no reactions. But of course they cannot guarantee them as gluten free. The chips were cooked perfectly and a lovely golden outer and soft inside, just as they should be.

I moved out of the area so haven’t had fish and chips from here for a long time. It was Fantastic as I remembered. Still the Best Fish and Chips in Chelmsford.

Just ordered £27 worth of fish n chips, absolutely awful, never seen chips like them, definitely reheated….cold & absolutely awful!! Looks like may be different owners from when I was last there a couple of years ago!!!!!

I can honestly say that the fish and chips bought from here was the worse that l have ever had. It was embarrassing to give it to my guests. I would have gone back but my husband did not want to make a fuss in front of our guests. The portion of fish was very small and batter was thin. The chips were small bits and slightly green in colour. I will not go there for takeaway fish and chips again.

Been going here a while and have no issues with the food. Service can be brilliant or bloody awful! One guy is as happy as Larry really nice smiley happy to chat, the other one has one of his chips on his shoulders! Miserable , rude and brusque he could do with some customer service training, He really lets the whole plaice ;) down! If you can ignore the rudeness try the food, it’s nice.

Was looking forward to our fish & chips tonight, it's normally good at Writtle. Sadly a big let down. Fish batter was very soggy, unedible and not sure who supplied the chips but they forgot to peel them. Don't have skin on chips from a fish & chip shop.Had to trow half the meal away. Even the squirrels brought them back and said get them peeled.

Had a takeaway, been here before but it has gone downhill. The fish batter was nice but the fish itself was very watery, which made the texture of the fish soft and mushy. It wasn't enjoyable. The chips were fine and the gravy was nice. There are nicer fish and chip shops to get your takeaway from!

Must be the only chip shop in Essex that had ‘run out of chips’. An embarrassment to the Fish and Chip shop business and will certainly be avoiding in future.

Worst chips ever. Fish is lovely and fresh with great batter. Will not be visiting again, as last two times the chips have been terrible. Such a shame as it used to be so good.

Beware of the chips served up at 1200 as they've been stale on the last 2 occasions, clearly reheated chips from previous day!! The fish was very nice but ruined twice now by stale chips. Not good enough!! Won't be going back.

Very good, I had cod and chips - beautiful. very fast service and the place looked very clean. Social distancing outside was a bit of a shambles, unclear marking on the pavement.

This small fish and chip shop situated in Writtle, just outside of Chelmsford is simply the best when it comes to good fish and chips. They consistently serve great food and this shows if you turn up on a Friday evening and see people queuing out of the door. We have been customers for about 10 years +. Their cod is superb. Creamy and white and very tasty. Chips are excellent too. Staff are very friendly and are more than happy to take telephone orders so that you can skip the wait when you get there. We used to drive all the way there from Braintree and people thought we were mad, but we now travel from Hockley with our thermal bag so that it's still hot by the time we get home!

Been coming here for around 25 years. The food is usually great but my last visit on Wednesday 10th April for lunch was very poor. We got there about 12.30 and ordered 4 cod and chips. The chips had lots of black bits on them and it looked as if they had been recooked from the night before. A couple of the fish were ok but one of the extra large cods was dry and the bottom of the fish was stuck fast on to the skin, it usually falls away. I hope this was just a bad day but that's still no excuse as they are not cheap. I hope things improve. I have given praiseworthy reviews for this place before and I don't like giving bad reviews but I've got to be honest. Let's get better please.

Had haddock & chips Friday night & couldn't fault it. It'd our regular fall-back for a Friday, just glad it's only two minutes down the road 😊

Went here after reading previous review as it said best in Essex, would hate to see any others, I turned up ordered fish n chips and was told cash only?? No signs anywhere stating this, Luckily I did have enough cash on me. Won’t be going again tho, fish was only just warm And chips also warm, she said it was freshly cooked but I’m guessing leftover from Lunch, not nice

Probably the best fish and chip shop in Essex, first tasted their cod and chips 30 years ago always call in when passing and last Wednesday 4th July it was just as good hot and crispy and really tasty cod and excellent chips

Highly recommend this chip shop, my boyfriend and I have tried sooo many different ones and this is by far the best!

Not impressed - fish and chips Tuesday then fish and chips following Monday (today 5th Feb) found 2 hairs amongst the chips! Started getting takeaways from here after seeing hygiene gone up to a 5 - will not come here again! No hair nets worn! Extremely off pointing!

Over the past 25 years, my family have come from Epping to Writtle to get excellent fish and chips. Very rarely am I disappointed. For my family, they serve the best fish and chips in the South East. Go there, order and eat. It's good, very good!

Been here a number of times but recently food has deteriorated. Unfortunately will not be returning. Not what it use to be.

Not sure why people rave about this place. The food isn't bad but nothing special; it's expensive - you can get fish and chips in many restaurants for the same price - and portion sizes seem to be getting smaller all the time. Plus they always up-sell you XL cod or XL haddock by saying they don't have smaller sizes available. My 'XL haddock' tonight was pathetically small. The only fish and chip shop where I still feel hungry after haddock and chips. And though it isn't really their fault, the clientelle - the vast majority of whom have to wait 10+ mintues - insist on parking as close to the front door as they can, in spite of there being free car parks at the nearby Coop and on the Green, both of which are less than 3 mins walk away. Bridge St is extremely narrow and it causes chaos most evenings. Unfortunately, the nearest alternatives are quite a distance away, which is probably why it seems so popular.

Worth a phone order . Great fish & chips , chicken breast and the kids nuggets or sausage . Cold drink in cans also . We get ours and go and sit on the green near the duck pond in the summer . Nice fish and chips 99% of the time and summer time on the green highly recommend . Haddock and plenty of other fish . Ribs as well

The Fish Shop in Writtle is consistently excellent (as can be seen by the queues, and cars parked outside!) Lovely to have on my doorstep and very hard to resist the wonderful aromas as I walk past! Highly recommend

Mejor chippy en Essex, sí iría tan lejos para decir que.

Nos encanta ir a usar nuestro pescado y patatas fritas desde aquí, sin embargo, en los últimos meses la comida se ha convertido en coherente. Patatas fritas grasientas, pescado ha sido seco y con la cena de esta noche, mi scampi no estaba hecha y estaba rodeada de miga de pan empapadas. Nos detendremos aquí y en vez de ir a la calle (Moulsham Robinsons) es mucho más sabroso y mucho menos grasiento!

The food is excellent. There battered fish is cooked in a light batter and the chips are crisp and not soggy or greasy. The staff are friendly and efficient.

El pescado y las patatas fritas llegué aquí estaba lejos de los mejores que he tenido. Pasta de pescado era ligero y crujiente, a mi me gusta! Las patatas fritas eran sin embargo grasienta y había una larga espera por la comida. El personal no era demasiado amable y que creo que tenía que ser un poco más hablador que habría hecho el esperar menos notorio. Sin embargo, recomendaría este lugar en el conjunto y volvería de nuevo.

Like many others I've been visiting this place for decades. Always friendly, they work hard to serve up some of the finest in Chelmsford.Yes they're not as cheap as say Mrs Cod in Moulsham St but the quality is much better. Will continue to go back, just make sure you have ketchup at home - the sachets in there are expensive :)

This place has a 1 hygiene rating! Don't eat here, the food is awful. Greasy, cheap, nasty. It even smells rancid from outside. I feel sorry for the local residents who have to pit up with the stench. You have to park either in the co-op car park behind or walk. Or Park near a different chippie and eat there.

Been coming here for more than 20 years. Usually great fish and chips but not this time. Had Cod and chips, the fish was lovely and fresh but small for an extra large cod at £7.00. This time the chips weren't as good as usual, small and a little hard, I hope it was just a bad day. I will go again.

They have worked there way up and built up a great reputation for the fish and chips they serve but have they got to greedy with this now as the portion of chips you get for your money is far below what you use to get before they got so popular.

If you want the best fish & chips in Chelmsford this is the place to go! I live in the centre of town and have many chippies on my doorstep but would rather drive to Writtle to get food from this place. Consistently fresh fish and generous portions. Just give it a go, it's worth the trip.

I have always used this fish and chip shop, can honestly say its the best one! always great customer service, the people in there are lovely!

Disgusted at the portion sizes my husband just brought home from this place the chips are okay but there's hardly any chips atall and for the prices I would expect a lot more very dissapointed to say the least. Was gonna ring to let them know this but what are they gonna do deliver me some more? Won't be using them again very poor. And the fact u have to pay cash this day and age raises a lot of questions have to make a special trip to the cash point every time just for some poxy chips

Great Fish and Chips. Usual offerings. Does what it says on the tin. And does it well and freshly cooked, so be prepared to wait a bit (well worth it). The chips could just be a bit more crisp, but that seems a common problem in most F&C's?

20 years of great Fish and chips.Prices are fair and food is usually cooked fresh. Always chat with the owner who genuinely is interested in all customers. Highly recommend.

6 of us called at the above fish shop. We all placed our order , It was ALL cooked freshso we had to wait a bite longer then just out of the hot cupboard it was worth it nice white fish cooked well batter not greasy.

Every time I have visited the service has been fast and efficient,no matter how busy. Good portions and great cod.

Me and my family have been going to this Fish and Chip shop for over 20 years. We travel from Epping to Writtle. The fish is always great and so fresh with crispy batter. The chips are also always great. Go here you wont regret it.
