We’ve been to fish cottage a few times and always had a great experience, but this time the service was very poor and the food very bland unimaginative and in all honesty ridiculous over priced and not what I expected from fish cottage, we ordered the scallop starter which to be honest wasn’t anything special, the we both ordered from the catch of the day I had halibut and my wife picked the hake which both came with a huge amount of bagged rocket salad leaves two sun-dried tomatoes and large amount samphire, and these meals wasn’t cheap,

We went to The Fish Cottage today. There was a big queue when we got there, always a good sign. Our order was quite slow to arrive but when it did arrive (dirty crab fries and king prawns with chips) it was absolutely delicious, totally top notch stuff. Although given the time I would have hoped that it was hot, the fries under the crab were quite cold. I gathered that the man on the till was probably quite new and needed a bit of further training. When the chef came to speak to him I was totally impressed by the way he was firm and kind with the way he spoke but didn't lose his cool like a tool. All in all a very good experience, but you guys need to help people who are learning a bit more

I reviewed this restaurant on my first visit earlier this year, and at that time we were blown away by the quality of the fish. So where better to celebrate an important day which was our wedding anniversary. This made it quite special despite the indifferent weather. A small table by a dividing wall gave us the space we needed to settle our two small dogs out of the way. We opted for nibbles to start…bread with olive oil and balsamic, and huge green nocellara olives. With a restaurant offering freshly caught fish you are always at the mercy of what is available in the ‘catch’. Disappointingly the options which would have been my go-to choices, Sea Bream and Lemon Sole were not on the menu. We both opted for the plaice instead. This was perfectly prepared and served with a parsley dressing which was light and subtle. The accompanying chips and salad were ample and well prepared…and I couldn’t resist a side of mushy peas, prompting the maitre d’ to say ‘that’s very posh fish, chips and peas!’ I’m sure that on a sunny day sitting outside would have been lovely, but with a sea fret in place and the consequent reduction in air temperature it was nice to be snug and warm inside. The food was excellent, the ambience was very good as the restaurant was quite busy even though this was a late lunchtime, and the bill didn’t cause an involuntary intake of breath, even when the service charge was added. This was an excellent day to celebrate, and a special place to be, and we reflected that the weather was probably no better 44 years ago when we tied the knot. In the low cloud and mist the journey from Harrogate had seemed a long one, but I’m pleased to say it was well worth it. The dogs also enjoyed their exercise on the beach afterwards.

We enjoyed the food when it arrived, nicely cooked monkfish and zander (usually freshwater fish, not a sea fish - happy to be corrected if I’m wrong) but where was the crispy skin I was looking forward to. New potatoes and twice cooked chips were excellent. Salad accompaniment was different to the usual bagged fodder you get elsewhere, with rocket, sun dried tomatoes, fennel and samphire - possibly a bit too much of the latter as it was very salty. The order of ‘Nibbles’ - Cockles and mussels was ok, but the mussels were very small and not what I expected. As for service, we arrived about 10 minutes early, our table was available, but we had to wait for a few minutes to be seated as the head waiter was busy. The same waiter who took our order was very good, explained about the food and went to ask if he was unsure. The problems at the Fish Cottage are with their systems. Nibbles didn’t appear until requested and there was probably an assumption that they were to serve with the main course. Zander was one of the ‘market fish’ but their system wasn’t programmed for it, so they cooked a lemon sole instead. It was picked up by the waiter prior to serving, and we were told it would be another 5 minutes to rectify - not so as it was between 15 and 20. In the meantime we were served with one dish, this was our choice as we didn’t want this hanging around. Consequently my wife had finished her meal as mine was arriving. Overall it was the best part of an hour to receive our meals. Final gripe was that the plain wooden chairs are uncomfortable to sit on for an extended period of time. The Fish Cottage is obviously popular, plenty of folks dropping in for fish and chips to eat out which looked lovely, and many returning customers I’m sure, but sadly, probably not us.

Location and food is superb. The only thing that let it down was the service when ordering at the counter We asked for the haddock to be skinned but was told far too busy to do that. All restaurants and take aways in Whitby are happy to remove skin and it wasn’t overly busy. But we accepted it and ordered. Then we were told they didn’t have any buzzers available to let us the food was ready so they would call out number 87. We waited and waited so I went up and they said it’s been here as while! Asked why no call out and they ignored the question. Asked for ketchup and was asked for 60p. Happy to pay but it was so flippant and dismissive it left a poor opinion. Lady serving drinks and clearing tables was absolutely lovely. Just a shame the ordering team let the restaurant down.

Very disappointed. Read review in Times recommending it as a top beach restaurant. Pleasant location but well away from beach. Ingredients good but everything deep fried and stodgy. Considering prices especially for drinks no better value than the average chippy.

Chose this place because we ate here last time we were in the area a year ago. Then we found it to be delicious. This time I found it very disappointing. I had Whitby Scampi and chips. Scampi was ok but the chips were not nice! They were very pale, cold and soggy. My husband did enjoy his oysters and the halibut but the new potatoes were way over cooked. Shame as I had been looking forward to it all day! However the staff were pleasant.

Reserved a table for 2 at 6.30pm. Order taken and drinks served. Still waiting at 7.15 pm our fish and chips. Very busy and others were waiting too. Last straw when a couple who arrived after us were served their main course of fish and chips and mussels. Decided to leave ( car parking due), so we were given free food to take with us. Staff were very apologetic but we shouldn’t have had to wait so long. No one checked if we were ok, or let us know there was a delay. Outside service seems to be prioritized over those in the restaurant, and the kitchen obviously can’t cope with the demand. Inside small with nice decor, but lots of people from outside using the bathroom which is annoying as they walk through the centre of the place. If we go again will eat outside. Appreciated no charge for the meal, but spoilt the visit.

We enjoyed lunch here and were lucky enough to get a table inside with the dog. The staff were welcoming and the service spot on. The haddock and chips were to die for but there was an extensive choice of fish with some options for non-fish lovers. The only reason why it was 4* and not 5* was because the mark up on the wine was excessive eg a bottle of Wandering Angel that costs £22 in the supermarket was £48.50 here.

Booked a table and were shown to our seats. The restaurant was already busy so had to wait a while for anyone to take a drinks order. When the server got to us we order drinks, starters and mains all t the same time. The starters were good, the crab on fries were delicious, unfortunately we had to remind our server about the drinks and these came part way through our starters. Mains came quickly after our starters (keep note of this point) the scampi was good, however my partners moules mariniere was disappointing. The mussels were overcooked and chewy and unfortunately the sauce was lacking white wine and relied heavily on cream. The sauce was far too heavy for the dish. Upon asking for the bill I found that a service charge (stealthy tip) had already been added. This may be becoming more widely done now, but is a cheeky method as we brits typically won’t want to ask for it to be removed for fear of appearing rude. All in all, over £100 spent for two drinks, starters and two mains. City prices certainly, but unfortunately, what was delivered was not city quality.

I cannot believe anyone would leave a negative review on this place. We had cod and chips in the evening and it only can be described as wonderful. Batter crispy, fish light and full of flavour with well cooked chips. No I’m not an expert but I know good food when I have it. The gentleman at front of house was brilliant and he liked my dog too so that’s a bonus. If you fancy something different there is plenty on offer. Having seen many previous glowing reviews, we decided to try out the fish and chip take away supper from The Fish Cottage. We arrived and joined the queue at the takeaway at 6.40 pm. We then sat and waited for our order. In the meantime, at least ten other parties arrived and placed orders and to our displeasure, at least seven of them received their orders before us. We did eventually receive our order 45 minutes after placing it. We found this to be unsatisfactory, especially as we only ordered two regular cod and chips with no extras, whereas other people were ordering much more, but still received theirs before us. Whilst we can't complain about the food itself, we will not be visiting here again based on our one and only experience. We appreciate that Saturday night is going to be busy, but there appears to be no sense of order in terms of prioritising customer orders at the takeaway. Shame as we'd heard good things about it, but Whitby itself is only a couple of miles along the road and there are plenty of fish and chip establishments there to choose from.

Lovely beautifully designed restaurant with happy friendly staff .We ordered oysters which were served very nicely with shallots ,lemon or tabasco. Also with samphire which was good . Although there was wine by the glass in either 125ml or 175l we were told they no longer served wine by the glass because they waste too much .So we stuck to water but then saw individual glasses of wine being taken to other tables .We couldn’t have managed a bottle. My husband ordered Catch of the Day and chose mackerel , caper and lemon butter and new potatoes. He really enjoyed it and thought the mackerel was very fresh and cooked to perfection.I ordered crab salad and sourdough bread . The crab and the salad were very good but small and we realised when we got the bill it was a starter but that’s probably my fault .The sourdough bread unfortunately was not good at all .It was dry and stale and didn’t seem like sourdough. It may have been slightly more palatable with the option of butter . We ordered dessert.Husband had the rhubarb tart and I had the brownie both with ice cream .The desserts were really good .If the bread had been better and there was the option of a glass of wine even if there was just a house red or white I would have given 5 stars .

Instead of the conventional journey to Whitby for fish and chips we followed the recommendation of a friend to try the Fish Cottage in Sandsend. The first advantage is that they are fully dog friendly, and with two small doggoes in tow this made a pleasant change for a fish restaurant to welcome them with open arms. I had tired of ringing around those in Whitby only to be told that dogs are not allowed in the restaurant. The Fish Cottage is aptly named, it’s a cottage and they…er serve fish. It is a very well presented establishment and you can choose to eat inside or outside, and also if you wish, have food from the takeaway bar outside. But to say they ‘serve fish’ vastly understates the choice of seafood available. Yes you can have battered cod or haddock if you wish, but the choices also include sea bream, lemon sole, lobster, fish tacos and so many more. There is also a blackboard for the specials of the day. I had the sole which was exquisite, beautifully cooked in parsley and garlic butter and served with my choice of chips and salad. Quite the best I’ve had for a long time. My wife had the sea bream off the bone which was equally impressive. The puddings were good too, and if you have a big appetite try the sticky toffee pudding, if you’re full the raspberry sorbet is lighter but equally good. Food of this quality doesn’t come cheap, and were I in the Algarve I’d expect to pay over £100 for a meal of this quality. A pleasant surprise then that our total bill including drinks and pudding was £86. We’re looking forward to our next visit. This is a real gem.

After spending the morning out and about in Whitby with the dogs, we decided to go for a 'Chippy dinner'. This place was recommended on Google so we had a drive up to Sandsend, intending to park up, buy our food then return to the car to eat it, what a pleasant surprise to find a lovely outdoor eating area that was full of families and couples with dogs, the sun was out so we decided to stay and eat them there, the food was delicious, a little expensive but for the location and quality we don't mind paying a little more. Staff were very friendly and food was well cooked and freshly made while we waited. Sandsend is a lovely little seaside village so if your in the area and wanting Fish and Chips give this place a try, bring your dogs too they are just as welcome!.

This must rate as one (if not the best) of the best seafood restaurants in the area. Modern, bright, welcoming, catering for casual visitors and a take out / eat outside option, else formal dining inside. Imaginative menu choices, such as seafood or meat or vegetarian tacos, stunning lists of fresh fish, cooked to order, and good old fashioned fish and chips (but with finesse). Hot, tasty, great value for money. Child and dog friendly. A quality wine list. Very friendly and efficient staff ... what more could you ask for? We visited twice on consecutive afternoons, with no prior booking, and were seated quickly, given it was the first week of Easter holidays and Whitby and Sandsend were rapidly filling. Two superb meals on each day (day one fish pie, and for me - freshly cooked Mackerel on the bone - sweet and succulent; Day 2, seafood tacos for my wife, Cod and chips for me with proper mushy peas, but light batter and big chunky flakes of white fish). We can't think of one complaint - oh - and there's free parking too!

First visit to Fish Cottage and definitely won’t be the last. The food and service were exceptional, best seafood in the area by far. Huge portions and absolutely delicious food.

Positives out the way, food tasted pretty good, no better than we could have got in Whitby or Saltburn, but not bad. Unfortunately the list of ‘bad’ is pretty extensive. Flys everywhere, it made the place seem very unsanitary, and very off putting to eat...

We asked specifically for fish with sauce on the side but it came smothered in sauce/butter. Felt it was wrong to send it back as presumably it would be thrown away. Boiled potatoes smothered in butter. Ice cream had sugar crystals over the top -...

I've eaten here before and really enjoyed the fish burger. It was a salmon patty, served on a black brioche bun which was delicious. Today I ordered exactly the same item and I revived a white burger bun with fried fish and a singular lettuce...

It was a busy day for the chippy. But the food wasn't good. The chips were greasy. The fish was very very very small, the fish was all greasy batter. They were not cheap either. First and last time.

Went for lunch on Tuesday, 5th Nov. Lovely lady showed me and hubby to a seat. We ordered fish & chip special, which included bread and tea for £18 each. It was quickly brought to us and was delicious. The batter on the fish was really good.

We stopped in here when we were at Whitby goth weekend. I'm always nervous about eating out due to a milk allergy but it was nice to see they had a vegan menu, it did have limited items but it was still nice to see somewhere that wasn't going to turn me into the exorcist. The server was really helpful and so lovely, I didn't get his name but he was the only server in there. Once I told him about the milk allergy he said he'd inform the kitchen which put my mind at ease. The food was absolutely lush, I had the lentil Ragu and those garlic potatoes were unreal. My OH had the fish and chips and he said it was amazing, and the mushy peas were the best he'd had. The quality was fab and the prices were very reasonable. Will definitely be returning next goth weekend.
