The Fish & Chip Shop in Stevenage

Ordered cod roe chips and a battered sausage which was enemic batter was under cooked. Cod Roe was soggy under cooked and an inedible mess. Chips were obviously pre cooked and reheated . Won't be visiting this chippy again . Poplars is much better quality all round. (Picture proof attached)

First I bought 2 kids fish and chips. They enjoyed the meal, but I noticed that the batter was thicker overlapped for delicate cod. Later, same day, I bought a haddock and chips and took home. I was very disappointed, the chips had grit all over them as if they were picked up from the floor. I binned them. Haddock had a thick layer of batter. They have lost a customer undoubtedly. It's a lovely shop and staff, but they need to raise their standards in foods.

Have been using The Fish And Chip Shop since it opened and am invariably happy with most everything g we get from here. The skinned haddock is top notch and the grandchildren love the kids cod meal (for a top value fiver). Matt runs a tight ship here and works hard to keep the quality levels high. There’s lots of options for vegetarians but nothing is 100% perfect and the only thing we’re not crazy about is the curry sauce but we see that as a positive because it keeps the calories down and we don’t miss it now.

Every person who opens a fish and chip shop should attend a course on how to make crispy batter!!, just had a large cod and chips and the batter is a soggy mess, why do southerners put up with soggy batter lol

Came in with some of my friends for a chippy dinner and the staff were lovely. Nicola was so polite, Aimee was a ray of sunshine with her beautiful entertainment of the night. And head off to the chef Ricky for the most beautiful fish and chips . Would highly recommend! Keep up the good work team!

Not only is the one of the two hotspots for gluten free fish and chips in Hertfordshire but the are actually the best chips! I can’t resist making a little detour to pop in if I’m coming from that direction, they are big, with a nice crunch and always fresh. Best eaten straight away and when you do, you’ll finish the lot. Whatever you do don’t change, because your chips are a winner.

Just had a delivery from here chips where nice the sausage served here used to be delicious the ones we just got were horrible quality has really dropped sadly

Ordered 1 large Cod and a medium Haddock plus medium chips…price £17.50 Both pieces of fish contained far too much batter and hardly any fish….portion size of the chips adequate at best… Overrated…won’t be back,waste of money…

I heard of a chips shop offering gluten free fish and chips. I have been unable to eat gluten for a few years and didn't even know this was an option so I usually make my own. Good friday, I am unable to eat meat (christian). I called the shop to make sure they had GF fish before driving 15 mins to the shop which is in the next town. I was told they had it but I couldn't pre order, I had to just go and order in the shop. Well my husband and I went, waited in line from 19.00 until 20.30 and when we finally got to the till they advised they had run out of GF fish. I was absolutely livid! You could have said this when people are waiting in the queue so long, you could have let me pre order in the first place and put it aside for me, you could have just made one after realising I waited 1.5 hours in the cold expecting GF Fish. It's just batter! We got a shrug of the shoulders, a sorry and I had to order halloumi. NEVER AGAIN!

Well it was the anniversary of misery this week. But all year The Old Town Fish Bar has been there day in, day out serving quite simply divine fish and chips.The food is the best and #1 in Stevenage is richly deserved. But the service has been ace. Matt and the team are there with a friendly smile which really cheers folk up. We ordered onion rings, chicken nuggets, one large chips and one medium. The large chips were half empty about the same as the medium which wasn't a lot at all! The onion rings and chicken nuggets were put into the box as well without asking us which filled up most of the space. My brother only eats chips and the large box was meant for him but ended up being barely anything. All food should be separate and more chips. The large wasn't worth £3!!!!

We take our fish & chips seriously and we have never been disappointed. We used the delivery service for the first time recently due to enforced self-isolation and the quality of the food was just as good and arrived in 15 minutes. The gluten free curry sauce is a must.

Just want to say a big thank you to Matt and his staff at "the fish and chip shop" Stevenage for doing a fantastic job in putting smiles on peoples faces that are less fortunate than most people both financially or dealing with their own demons. Julie has just spent 2 months at the cygnet hospital stevenage whilst waiting for a bed in leeds, now having got that bed and slowly making good progress we thought it would be a good idea to treat all the patients on the ward where julie was to an anything you want treat. My husband placed an order for 11 items of food & drinks to be delivered to a hospital I was in at the time. He spoke with Matt on the day to place the order & to explain what it was for and where it was to be delivered to. The large order was delivered at the promised time & the quality was superb. Ordered food for delivery, it arrived within 15 minutes, hot and delicious. It was cooked to perfection, I didn’t want it to end. This has got to be the best fish & chip shop in the area. We don’t go anywhere else.

Was on a 6 day stay in the not so nice part of Stevenage , from Sunny Cyprus and was told to try this place. In my 44 years, this has to rank amongst the best i have ever tried and i have lived abroad a long time. Owner was friendly and very honest and the Battered Squid- wow, and that coming from a Greek Cypriot!Had Cod and chips too, its just ace- a must try if in area.

I live in the old town and have a chip shop 5 minutes from my house but it’s not to my liking to greasy so I choose to drive to bed well but I read reviews on this one and I just walk down to the old town for the best in town omg the chips are beautiful and the large fish is amazing and certainly lives up to its name LARGE the staff are very friendly and helpful. I’m so glad I gave it a try because I continue to use it all the time. Thank you for giving me the best.x

What can I say! These guys are absolutely amazing. Nothing comes remotely close to the delicious food they serve!We recently moved 30 odd miles away, yet, still make it our mission to drive back regularly, just for our fish and chip fix!Last weekend we tried our local chipshop, just because... Unfortunately our food wasn't the best. So, back to The Fish and Chip Shop in Stevenage tonight! My mouths watering already!!! When travelling to Stevenage, becomes more exciting than visiting the seaside for fish and chips, you know they're good!!

After 4 months in lockdown this was the first take away we've had and weren't disappointed. It was delivered to our door, piping hot by a friendly young lady. It was an enormous potion and delicious tasting. Now I know you deliver we will definitely be back.

We collected our dinner from here a little while ago, my gosh it was amazing, we came from another town to come here and it was so hot and fresh. Fabulous service from a young lady called Chloe at the till. We will drive here again very soon. Highly recommend !!

Popped into on the way home and ordered fish and chips. Service was quick and adhered to social distancing. Food was hot and delicious. Best fish and chip shop in the area, nearly as good as the ones up North. Great job guys.

basic fish and chip shop with nice decor and space to sit down . reasonable price and the tables are actually pleasent to sit at should you want to eat in rather than munch chips as you walk! The staff are friendly but busy and a busy fish and chip shop is a good sign of quality. reasonably priced theis is a step up from the average take away. No Loo and hte staff need to work on mutual respect and internal communication as twice ive seen them bicker over mixed up orders. ( hence the four instead of the 5 stars). To clients they could not be nicer or more generous. catch them at closing time, (Which is before pubs shut), and they are happy to clear out food to customers rather than bin it. Good chips - and the fish has some flavour.

Every time I use this chip shop I am never let down. Most items are cooked to order and always very fresh and tasty. Good portion sizes as well. My be a bit out of my way but worth it.

A fish and chip shop serving gluten free fish all day everyday is a rarity. Excellent batter, fresh cod and perfect chips.

Always decent & tasty. Place is aways clean & tidy. Not cheapest but quality fish . Cod & Haddock nice with good portion of chips

Great gluten free options - the batter is a little on the extra crispy side compared to non-gf but can’t complain really as that’s not a terrible thing! The battered sausage is great (and also huge) and the curry sauce :) oh and gluten free onion rings!!!! Basically a GF’s heaven. It’s cooked separately so you have to wait about 15 mins but it’s worth it.

Having been working at Knebworth house on a film job , I’ve spent many many many hours in the estate living off coffee and chocolate ,& as much as I love chocolate I needed to find a local restaurant for a reasonably priced meal .

Love this place but the waistline doesn't. It could be me but it seems like every time I have been there, they have only just taken out the fish or chips out of the fryer. I avoid taking it home as i prefer eating it there and then, its so much nicer. If I am Pushing the boat out, I've got to have the special burger! Not sure it's on their menu though. it consists of a powdered bun, battered halloumi, spicy chicken breast, lettuce, Mayo and TWO onion rings !. its to die for...

This is a nice and modern chippy. Nice food, good range of dishes and my partner loves the fried hallumi.

These have to be the best fish and chips around town, brought them home , they remained hot, there was far too much fish and too many chips for one person. I ate half of both and saved the rest for lunch. Recommend to everyone you won’t be disappointed

By far the best chips in Hertfordshire, dare I say the UK. Wide selection of food, along with my personal favourite - battered halloumi! How could you go wrong eating here? (Trust me... You can’t) even the service is 100% on point!

We only live a few steps from here so the temptation to nip out regularly is great. The fish is all skinned which is my preference and they are a well oiled machine on crazily busy Friday evenings - a testament to the quality of the fare on offer.

Stopped in Stevenage over night called in for fish and chips, sat in and had a lovely portion of freshly cooked Cod and Chips, lovely food and very friendly staff,well worth a visit.

Visited for the first time. There are some tables inside where you can eat. I had haddock, chips and mushy peas. It was all freshly cooked and was very good. Friendly service too. Would definitely return.

Have had cod, the best you'll ever taste.

We have been working in Stevenage for the past few weeks, so we tried FISH AND CHIP SHOP for lunch, the fish and chips were good quality and presented in a good card board box for eating on the go.

So our local chip shop has closed so decided to give the next nearest chippy ago go . Even though u can eat in we had a takeaway great prices and the kids meals are fab even come with a gift and drink. My daughter is having to eat adult meals in most places due to portion size to small but here she was full lovely large portions. And people that work here are lovely too .

Great Fish and Chips always a good welcome from the staff. Great prices. A joy to go to get my food always.

I can honestly say I have never had better. Good clean big portions of food served with excellent customer service and at a reasonable price. Eaten in and taken away here many times over the last year and this place delivered every time.

Under cooked fish on this visit not normally like this may try again but if it is the same will not return

Popped in here for fish and chips as we'd arrived early and our friends hadn't got back and we'd had a long drive.

Visited on Thursday 13/09/2018 and ate in. The staff were excellent, they pushed two tables together and four place settings so we could dine in. We had fish/scampi/pie/ mushy peas and chips between us. There is a lot of choice on the menu. We all agreed that this was the best food from a chip shop that we have ever eaten and we have been to a few. The fish was huge, crispy batter, chunky, succulent flesh and served hot. The chips were amazing, we had a lot of food and apart from a few scampi pieces (far too many) we ate the lot and thoroughly enjoyed it. We were even served coffee afterwards. The staff are jovial, friendly and professional. Nothing was too much trouble. They cleared up quickly after us and an excellent way to eat freshly cooked fish and chips. We will definitely return to dine in again. We are too far away for take-away which is a real shame. Whilst waiting, we saw and heard the staff interact with lots of customers who queued up for take-away and again they provided a fantastic service. It is spotless, so clean and fresh. Well done to you all.

The best thing about there fish is the fish is not served Straight on top of the chips so the batter doesn’t go soggy. Also because it is boxed it’s easy to eat straight from there without the need for a plate.

Just grabbed a large chip today and it was delicious. Service was very friendly and very quick. Sit in and take away available. Seating inside and a few outside. Paid £2.50 for a large chip and it fed myself and my fiancé. Great value.

We called in for take-away fish & chips on Saturday. The service was very good , the fish took about 10 mins to be ready. The fish was nice and flakey and the chips were well cooked , its probably a good idea to ring in your order as parking can be difficult.

Thanks Trip Advisor! Without your help, we’d have gone hungry in Stevenage. We did not realise most (if not all) restaurants shut by 9:30pm on Friday night (even the Spanish one!)

Great food, the chips are crisp yet fluffy in side. Parking can be a bit of a problem so we tend to phone our order first then collect it

I went to this fish and chip shop because they had excellent reviews for gluten-free! (Celiac) And I was absolutely not disappointed! Not only did I get to enjoy delicious gluten-free fish and chips, but I also got gluten-free onion rings! They have dedicated gluten-free fryers! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

They do the best fish and chips. St the weekend can get really busy but I’ve only ever had to wait maximum of 10 minutes. They gluten free curry sauce is amazing!
