The Fig Tree in Mid Sussex

Superlative ,simply the best meal we have ever had! A special birthday celebration where everything was perfect. The food was out of this world, including fabulous vegetarian options. The wine flight complemented the courses brilliantly and the service was everything you could ask for at a fine dining restaurant. Supercalifragalistcexpialidotious!

First time at the Fig Tree for lunch - had heard very good things but was bowled over by both the quality of food and service. The six course menu for lunch was superb - good ingredients cooked with skill and presented with a real understanding of food. The ladies serving were all excellent - they had the right balance of attentiveness and friendliness with a good understanding of the menu - couldn't fault the whole experience.

As ever, perfection. It really doesn’t matter what you order it’s all so delicious. Service is friendly and impeccable. If you want to impress a loved one or friend, this is the restaurant for you. Or if you want Michelin equivalent food but not Michelin prices this is for you. Plus supporting local peopleusinesses

Well I dont go out much and Country wise have not eaten extensively,so rather an amateur...been to Ritz and Gravetye and a Michelin star in Horsham, South Lodge too.....So this place Figures differently as in a High St, lovely Older buildings etc...yes food of course!!!!....6 courses £58 set menu small portions but building up to feeling full. £132 with wine, each course with its unique tastes which for me made my unadventurous daily diet seem sterile, loved it! So yep enjoyed myself as did my wife who does not suffer bad cooking I can tell you...hope that helps. P.s.what a nice young waitress very good presentations. Thankyou.

The tasting menu is an excellent experience. Good selection of different flavours and excellent presentations starting with the canapes right through to the macarons - each course was introduced by staff. A very relaxed experience on a Thursday lunchtime with the restaurant only a third full but still just the right level of ambience. As designated driver, just my wife had the wine pairing. Given the calibre of the restaurant an extra £45 was acceptable - the waitress who described them all had incredible knowledge (or a very good memory). The cheese addition could have been included rather than an extra £10 BUT was also excellent as you would expect - including a very nice charcoal cheddar. We left after the best part of 2 hours a bit heavier but nearly £200 lighter. Won't be coming every week, but will certainly be back.

Great place to come for a special occasion and enjoy the incredible quality of the cookery. Amazing food.

We have been a few times. We couldn’t fault the food which was good and tasty. Small portions . But service not up to usual standards - bit disinterested and going through motions, unlike before when it had been first class. Shame.

We have been visiting this restaurant since it first opened but hadn’t been for a while. We were delighted to find our meal was excellent the staff are lovely and James produces fabulous dishes. The plates look amazing and the taste equally as good. Well done to the Team.

Rather average. The surroundings are rather ordinary, as is the service, and come to that, so is the food. These folks who think it deserves a star are way out. Go to Paris and try a 2 Michelin starred place there. Then you get what its all about. This is Ok, maybe even good for a local eatery ,but Gravetye Manor is in another league.

How is this restaurant not Michelin starred? The food and service is excellent. Tasting menu today was as good as Sportsman in Whitstable and better than Gravetye where we ate last week. Tomato starter followed by sea bass with Langoustine foam were a joy. The lamb was best I have eaten for many years. Desserts were lovely. Thank you.

We visited the Fig Tree for dinner, and had high expectations based off of previous reviews. It didn't disappoint, the food was excellent and we opted for the six course tasting menu without the cheese option. The stand out dishes were the canapes and the lamb! Service was also excellent, and the restaurant had an excellent atmosphere. Would definitely recommend.

We enjoyed a fantastic family meal at the Fig Tree. Each of the five courses on the tasting menu were delicious, the flavours and textures having been expertly crafted. They easily matched Michelin starred meals we have had elsewhere. I’m sometimes less impressed by tasting menu dessert courses, but that wasn’t the case with this menu. The standard was maintained throughout. The staff also added to the experience with warmth and professionalism. We will definitely be returning very soon! Thank you to James, Jody and all the staff for a wonderful evening.

The food was absolutely superb. One of the best meals I’ve ever had in England. We had the 7 course tasting menu and everyone was a candidate for Masterchef the Professional finals. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Loved the comfortable dining room and the accomplished cooking of this fine dining restaurant. Service was efficient without being fussy…a welcome change from the over-attentive up-selling waiters we have all come across. Our meal was delicious, and we felt represented good value. We will be happy to find another occasion to return soon.

My partner and I had Saturday lunch here and had a fabulous time. Every single course was perfect!! We chose the tasting menu and (even with a couple of extra dietary requirements) neither of us encountered any misstep. If we had to pick favourites, the mushroom canapé, all elements of the duck main and the 'mango cheesecake' dessert were truly outstanding. Thank you to the chefs and whole team for creating such a wonderful experience

The best restaurant in Sussex! Every time I have been here there is no such thing as a bad meal. The staff are lovely and the food is beyond fabulous!

Excellent food in terms of quality presentation and most importantly, flavour. Every plate was a delicious masterpiece! Friendly service and the team were knowledgeable about each dish and the wines. Loved it!

This lovely restaurant seems to get better and better. We both had the tasting menu and what a delight it is! I won't elaborate on each course but suffice to say you won't get better anywhere in Sussex. Another amazing meal at The Fig Tree, the 6 course tasting menu was superb. Each complex course was bursting with flavour finishing with one of the best desserts I’ve had, a very talented team in the kitchen and great waiting service as well. Cannot recommend highly enough.

Perfect place for a special meal. The tasting menu with wine was really delicious and expertly put together.

The courses are small, but full of flavour. There are also appetisers and home made bread. We left the restaurant feeling very satisfied.

This is our fourth visit to the Fig Tree and each time our meal has been superb, a great example of fine dining. We had the six course tasting menu which was great value when compared to other restaurants. I highly recommend the Fig Tree and look forward to returning soon.

I was fortunate enough to be given this Dining experience as a birthday gift, and we had the 8 course Taster Menu. This would have to be the best Dining experience of my life; every course was a taste sensation of fantastic flavours. It would be difficult to rate one aspect or course above any other - all were incredible & would wholeheartedly recommend.

Just lovely. Classy. The food is really really great, the staff charming, the wine list has a few unusual bottles and it just works. I don't even think it's expensive.

As ever a wonderful meal worthy of 5 stars. The minus was the ambient temperature which we found unpleasant on a very cold November day. We appreciate the current issues around energy costs which must be a worry and threat to margins but think you need to revisit the problem and make better provision particularly for elderly clients who are more susceptible to cold and probably make up the majority at lunch.

We visited the fig tree on a Friday evening and ate the tasting menu with wine flight. The food and accompanying drink were first rate. The eating experience lasted over 2 hours and was a brilliant experience

Delightful restaurant. The food is impeccable with extraordinary flavour combinations. We've been here several times now and it's one of our 'go to' eateries in Sussex. Highly recommended.

I'll start by saying that I can be disappointed by many hospitality/restaurants. Not this time. Really wonderful food, the beef main course was faultless, the other dishes excellent. All dishes served to Michelin star quality, accompanied by a reasonably priced wine selection. Very relaxed atmosphere, no over attentive service, great village to explore. Beautiful food, very tasty, well presented in a lovely environment. Whats not to love? Highly recommended.

Once again an enjoyable meal at the Fig Tree. The service was good with just the right amount of time between courses. Chef was very happy to adjust my main course as I have an allergic reaction to scallops. Having owned a house in a wine growing region of France for 10 years we both opted for English wines which compared very well against their gallic counterparts. My one small gripe was that with my coffee it would have been nice to have a petit four or chocolate as an accompaniment. This is pretty standard in restaurants these days especially ones that possibly aspire to a Michelin star. As I said, "it's the little things that matter".

Superb 6 course taster menu. Every mouthful was a rich and rewarding experience. The service was excellent, especially the descriptions of each course. We also included the paired wines which were spot on. All in all, an absolute treat. Well worth it.

As always a amazing meal. If I could give 6 stars for the food I would, as this new tasting menuis the best one they have produced. There wasn’t a course one could fault. Really recommend going along and trying this out.

World class fare for a fair price. We thoroughly enjoyed my birthday lunch today, washed down with a cheeky red for a lazy afternoon of mild insobriety. Of particular note were the complementary hors d'oeuvres, bursting with flavour and texture to set the stage for what was to come. The onion and thyme bread with homemade butter was outstanding, and my starter of heritage beetroot tart marginally trumped the lamb main owing to its simple decadence. The atmosphere was not important since we were alone for most of the meal. Bonus! Loved it all.

Absolutely magical experience. Food was fantastically presented, artfully put together in both pallet and skill. We went for our anniversary and they even ended the night with a personalised plate. Service was sublime, attentive but un-intrusive. This will be our go to occasion restaurant from now on!

What a fantastic experience the tasting menu at the Figtree is, trying things you ordinarily wouldn’t because you can trust them to produce something special and they certainly did. An array of local produce skilfully cooked and thoughtfully put together to create the perfect meal - cannot recommend this enough.

What a fantastic find! We had the most wonderful lunch after a walk around the village. Couldn’t recommend enough. Service was superb and the food was delicious. There is free parking a 3 min walk from the restaurant.

Lovely way to spend a couple of hours in any day. Each course was delicious, in a warm & friendly environment as well as being good value for such high standard food.

We are visiting from Florida and my aunt and uncle took us here for lunch. THE FOOD WAS ABSOLUTELY FLAWLESS. Our party of five people agreed it was some of the best food we’ve eaten, including internationally. Not one thing on any of our plates was a misstep. This is no exaggeration. If you are on the fence about eating here, do yourself a favor and just go. You will not regret it. Thank you for wonderful dining experience.

Finally made it to this restaurant after a lot of hype and I must say it was absolutely devine. The staff immediately made you feel at home. Between our group we ranged over everything and every dish was exactly on mark. Will definitely visit again.

We visited the Fig Tree for a birthday lunch and had the set 3 course meal which was as good as any Michelin starred restaurants we have visited. The two waitresses were attentive without being intrusive and were particularly helpful with choosing a wine pairing for each course. Great value for money, I really can't speak too highly of this restaurant and look forward to returning for their evening tasting menu.

Exquisite tasting menu. 5.5 stars!

On a quiet dank Wednesday night we turned up for the first time since the pandemic began. How lovely to get such a beautiful meal and such warm efficient service. The chef did not once lose sight of his clean tasty elegant vibe. It was the very definition of a treat. All our dietary quirks were catered for and no-one felt that they were getting a worse deal than the others. I can wholeheartedly endorse the Orange Abbey Cocktail in fact we could have endorsed it several times over but wisely decided to stay sober enough to appreciate the cooking.

Probably the nicest food i've ever tasted! Every course put a smile on my face. I wish I lived closer to this place as i'd come here all the time. Food was reasonably priced considering the quality. Have paid much more for much less at other "fine dining" restaurants. Waitresses were very friendly and attentive but not overbearing. Honestly if you get a chance just go there!

Fabulous. Absolutely everything was lovely. The place is so pretty and comfortable and the atmosphere was great. The staff attentive and so friendly. The food was some of the best we have ever eaten. Each course was a picture and a delight to eat. The chef should be proud the restaurant was full yet unhurried and timing was perfect for each course. Time just went. Will be going back and would recommend.

We visited last night for the first time and we were blown away with how outstanding this restaurant is. I can’t believe we hadn’t come across it sooner. I was lucky enough to be invited to a work event where we booked the entire restaurant for 32 members of staff for a 7 course tasting menu with wine flight. Immediately impressive, The Fig Tree is a pretty restaurant on the High Street in Hurst which feels warm and welcoming to visit. We were greeted with sparkling wine which was topped up by the wonderful owners and paired with exquisite canapes. We then sat for a leisurely dinner where each and every course was delectable in flavour and beautiful to look at. As a pescatarian I was well catered for and each wine serve worked well with each course. The cheese coure was generous shared between four with local cheeses and biscuits and the dessert wines were the best I'd ever tasted. The staff were incredibly attentive while not being over bearing and I will definitely be returning for a more intimate affair with one or two friends as it had such a lovely atmosphere.

First time I visit after seeing a friend's recent trip.We were instantly and made to feel very welcome and the high level of service continued throughout the evening.The two ladies running the dining room were absolutely faultless, friendly, accommodating, genuinely interested and lovely.The food - wow! We had the tasting menu and from start to finish, it was astounding! Perfectly balanced flavours, the duck was cooked to perfection, the dessert was amazing but not too sweet and the palate cleanser... I could eat a big bowl of that any day of the week!We look forward to returning soon!

We have previously eaten here for lunch, so decided to try the evening tasting menu and certainly was not disappointed, absolutely tremendous. Service was great, good pace of courses and the wine pairing was really well paired with the food. Staff were all knowledgeable about the wine and food and whilst they were full, we were still made to feel as if we were the only ones they were serving, which is a great skill. We have experienced many tasting menus across the world and usually there’s at least one course where you feel you would have happily not eaten, but not this time, every course was extremely good, we also added the cheese course, which was a great move too. Exceptional experience, shocked they do not have a Michelin star. We have already booked to go back.

My fist visit to the Fig Tree three years ago made a huge impression - and now, my third visit may be my last.I’ve struggled greatly with how to rate the experience because - make no mistake - the food is really, really good. But you shouldn’t leave a three course lunch hungry. The tininess of the portions smacks of meanness, that no amount of “ooh, that’s tasty” makes up for. It makes the place FEEL like it’s about the money more than it is about the food. I’d rather pay more and be fed properly. This is a shame when the food is so good. I hope this is seen as constructive as the Fig Tree could be on the cusp of something really special…but this wasn’t quite it.

By far one of our favourite places to eat in Sussex. Michelin star standard menu with incredible flavours. The chef has a fantastic pallet and presentation is on point. But I must say, what elevates this restaurant further is its staff, they are incredible. Attentive, friendly and polite, with a clear understanding of the menu. I recommend to everyone and enjoyed our evening this time with friends. Thank you.

We had the pleasure to dine at the Fig Tree last night, I must say it was a delight, the food was excellent as was the atmosphere, the restaurant is small and inviting with good seating, well-spaced, gives a peaceful relaxed feeling to dine in. The service can not be faulted, very attentive and informative. For sure we will be back very soon.

Oh my lord! These guys need a Michelin star! But before they get one (or two!) let’s enjoy being able to book a table! Exquisite. Taste, texture, and presentation blew my mind!

We are regulars at this restaurant and the standard of food and service is always excellent. There is a set menu and an alternative vegetarian set menu which changes regularly to reflect the changing seasons.

Lunch for two. Very efficient staff, the service was very good. Food was excellent. We booked for 12 o'clock and arrived early which didn't cause a problem.

Fantastic - 3 course meal - each course was sublime with all 6 v happy customers. Service was attentive and cheerful without being overpowering. A very pleasant and memorable experience.Will definitely go back - when next in the area - shame it is so far from West Wales.

Fantastic food and service we are so lucky to have this restaurant in our village. The taster menu is perfect and definitely go with the wine flight as the pairings are superb! Can’t fault any part of it, In fact the only problem was after the wine flight we were a little drunk and miscalculated the tip (sorry!) we will rectify on our next visit! Fast becoming our favourite place to eat anywhere!

We had a fabulous tasting menu with wine paring here last night. The menu was imaginative and excellently cooked and the wine was paired perfectly. The ambiance was relaxed and welcoming; the staff were attentive and knowledgeable. It was a prefect evening - if you’re thinking of booking a tasting menu, do it!
