We were already booked into the pub's accommodation (see separate review) and decided to book for dinner. With the splendid view of the working port and harbour why go further? The dinner menu in our room promised fresh fish and shellfish from the Scrabster Market opposite the pub. Catch of the day! Homemade fish pie! Both our preferences but we had a "plan B" for the mussels. Very disappointed that none of the above was available on the menu in the restaurant which on the whole was quite different from the one in our room. We settled for the salmon dish which was on both menus and a special of the day lasagna. Both excellent, well cooked, generous and quality ingredients. We decided to have the Bloody Mary cocktail listed on the menu. Surprise surprise, you guessed it, no tomato juice. Our waitress Linda was a delight. Don't shoot the messenger as is said. It can't be easy running a fish restaurant in a fishing village opposite a fish market....Two stars would be vindictive, a deserved 5 for what we had, the view and crew, but 4 it is. 🇬🇧🇳🇿

Upper deck was very hot despite window open, no air flow at all. The service was very slow but cheerful when arrived. Had the chicken which was ok but the sauce left a bit to be desired and a few veg on the side would've helped.

We were struggling to find somewhere dog friendly to eat mid-afternoon in Thurso before taking the ferry from Gills Bay to Orkney, and were recommended to head down to Scrabster. It was well worth the small diversion, both for the warmth if welcome, friendly service and great food. Oh and the view over the fishing harbour. We'll be back next year!

Stayed here on our first night on our road trip from John o' Groats to Lands End. Really great location right on the harbour and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Had dinner in the public bar which was excellent and good value. The room was clean and tidy but a little dated and in need of some TLC but thats represented by the cost. Breakfast in the restaurant was excellent and again the staff were first class. Will visit again for sure

Stayed here for our Staycation holiday in Orkney. Very handy for the ferry terminal. Hotel food is very good, we were bed and breakfast which was good and we ate in the hotel a number of times and the food was good. Staff in the hotel very friendly and nothing was a bother for them. Although there is no parking at the hotel, you can park in the car park across the road which is not that expensive. Good bus service to Kirkwall.

8 of us were staying at the Ferry Inn for 4 nights, to attend Scottish National Sheepdog Trials. Prior to arriving we had decided to eat at a different restaurant each night. After our first meal in the refurbished Upper Deck/Ferry Inn restaurant, where ALL the staff, but especially Linda and Donna are so helpful and pleasant, we changed our minds as what we’d ordered here was so good. Over the 4 nights we tried the Chicken Schnitzel, Chicken Caesar Burger, Fish Pie, Haddock and Posh Fries, Macaroni cheese, King Prawn & Crab Linguine and they were all excellent….but… we all had the 10oz Sirloin or Fillet steaks and they were AMAZING. One of our party said the best steak he’d ever had was at One Devonshire Gardens…..and the Fillet Steak here was better and cooked to perfection. Would highly recommend

I recently visited this establishment for lunch with my husband, father and mother-in-law. It was our first wedding anniversary and we were looking forward to a nice low key meal out. Sadly this was not to be. After waiting over an hour for our meal I was upset when customers who had come in at least 20 minutes later received their food and we were still waiting. No apology for this just a yours will be 5 minutes. When I said to the staff that I was not happy about this I was informed in an aggressive manner that it was not her fault it was the kitchens fault and they were busy. Because of the staff response we decided to leave so I cancelled our food. The staff member made a big show off cancelling our food making sure she spoke loud enough so that the customers in both bars could have heard her. I was very embarrassed by this and was really glad to leave. Needless to say I will not be going back

Having driven up from Badaguish near Aviemore, we were all hungry but didn't have the leisure for a long meal. The staff were amazing in their efforts to provide us with quick, freshly prepared food, which was delicious. Although they do not have any vegan dishes on the menu, they were happy to provide me with one, and were happy to check for me that the frying fat was vegetable oil. The salad that came along with it was on of the best I have had in ages. The waiting staff were hospitable and friendly, and we left in time for our crossing with a feeling of having experienced some real old-fashioned Highland courtesy.

The Ferry inn is a functional hotel, the rooms basic but comfortable. Dinner in the restaurant was enjoyable, tasty, and reasonably priced. Not sure there was a need for the heating to be on though. Breakfast was excellent but the portions were clearly designed for fisherman. Despite the location mistake i would certainly return.

Stayed here overnight whilst doing the North coast 500. Lovely room and although the only view was the fire escape & building next door we didn't mind as we appreciated that there would be rooms set aside for those with pets and you can't have it all. The room was clean, had a massive tv and only up 1 flight of stairs so not too far to take the dog to get outside. The bathroom was very small with only a toilet & very small shower cubicle in (sink in the bedroom just a step outside bathroom door) but again it wasn't a problem for us. The only problem I found was that the fire doors banged so loudly anytime someone went through them so it did disturb your sleep.Popeye' s bar was attached to the hotel as was the Upper Deck where you had your meals, which was up a flight of stairs. There is a lovely decking area where you could sit outside weather permitting. We had our evening meal in there which was delicious & very good value for money. They were busy & had a function on but we were seated quickly & didnt have to wait long for our food to arrive. We sat at the window & looked at the boats in the harbour which is just a stone throw away. This was also where we had our breakfast and the full Scottish breakfast was huge - I asked for scrambled eggs with mine & think.I must have been given 6!! What a playful - you will not go away hungry!!! Fantastic food & must praise the chef it was plated beautifully. Also must thank the young lad who looked after us at both dinner & breakfast, he was very attentive & polite.

I used to go to the Upper Deck Restaurant with my grandfather 30 years ago - he always said it had the best haddock you could find anywhere. So on a return visit with my family I decided to go and seek it out again. Unfortunately (or fortunately) the upper deck was closed when we went so tried Popeyes underneath (I think they are all part of the ferry inn). We weren't disappointed - my partner and I had haddock and chips and the fish was honestly the best ever. My daughter had a chicken burger - apparently delicious too.We are in the back restaurant area - don't be put off by the decor the food is worth it! Could do with a small bit of updating but would definitely return. Staff were very helpful too. If I ever return to Scrabster I will be planning a repeat visit.

We ate in the Popeye Bar and I was the only woman in there apart from the barmaid. Some may find that off-putting, I would if I were travelling alone. But hubby and I had a good lunch at a very reasonable cost. Under £7 each for a burger and a pulled pork and cheese bun, both with chips or curly fries and the pulled pork had a small side of coleslaw. A pint of lager and a pint of lime and soda saw lunch come in at under £18. Scrabster is a working harbour/ferry port and this is a working man's pub, but we we got a good welcome and a good lunch.

As we found during our travels eating out up in this part of the world can be expensive, compared with living in a city. We visited this place twice during the week, using the pub section on the ground floor. First time we had burgers, the choice was good, as was the burgers, and fair value. The fish and chips looked good, but the mixed grill was ok, but compared with many places a little expensive for what it was. The chicken gougons were again ok but overpriced as they just camer with chips and no garnish. Would still recommend the place for a visit as overall it is reasonable for the area. Staff were friendly and welcoming, and general service was good.

We ate fish and chips and asked instead of veg just for a simple salad for the two of us. Our plates came with the unwanted veg and a huge bowl of various salads come as well, it included pasta salad, potato salad and a whole lot more. What with the TWO fish on each plate and lots of chips the shear amount of food in front of us was overwhelming. How did the staff expect anyone to eat all this? We could only eat a small amount. The quality the batter was poor and we left feeling ripped off.I will be writting to the local authority as I feel a place should not be able to call itself the best restaurant in north of scotland and serve this rubbish.

Provate il Popeye: il miglior panino di tutta la Scozia. Splendido locale di marinai a pochi metri dal molo per le isole Orcadi. Non vi pentirete di aver atteso qui la vostra barca per le isole del nord.

I couldn't resist this little diversion having been at the other end of the A9 just 2 days earlier - the road stops as it hits the Harbour, with next stop Orkney via the Ferry!I actually ate in Popeyes Bar rather than the restaurant, as I was in my full motorcycle attire and to be honest just wanted a quick bite and a something to drink that was fairly inexpensive. Joy Oh Joy- the same kitchen serves both! I had a very nice Chicken Burger (real chicken mind - not reconstituted from scraps into mince) with some curly fries and a J2O for just under a tenner. The atmosphere was chatty and friendly, so if I'm back in Thurso on another jolly north I'll be back! - Thanks to the lasses for keeping me entertained with their sharp wit, great craic! :-) x

Popped in for a bar lunch in Scrabster. Varied lunch menu with simple bar meals up to fillet steaks. Pulled pork bun with cheese and crispy onions was devoured by my wife, whilst I hacked my way through the HUGE Bluto burger and our compadre had a smaller Olive Burger ( Popeye theme!). Service was excellent and friendly with nothing a problem at all, we liked that the food service was nearly over but we did not feel rushed to eat and ordered desert as well. Can definitely recommend the ferry inn bar for meals at lunchtime and if you have extra money and time go to the upper deck restaurant for what looks like a very nice dinner menu. Don't be put off by this simple pub decor, stay for the great food and excellent service.

This is a very good restaurant and popular locally. The speciality is steak but they have a good choice if that's not your thing. The restaurant looks out over the harbour and Thurso bay.

This wasn't our first choice of eating places (we were intending to eat at the Captains Galley but we were only here for one night and they were closed), but it turned out to be a decent enough choice. We were originally at a table well away from the windows, but as soon as one became free by the window we were asked if we would like to move - good service. The food was all very nice, I went for steak as they regard it as a speciality and it was cooked to perfection. The only criticism is that the broccoli was rather hard, which is not how I like it. We skipped desserts so cannot comment on that, but starters and main were otherwise excellent.

This restaurant located near the harbour is well worth a visit. The food is excellent and the staff are very welcoming. The steaks are very good and the Cullen Skink, creamy fish and potato soup, is one of the best I've tasted.

The Upper Deck Restaurant overlooks Scrabster Harbour and we were fortunate to get a window seat that offered us a wonderful view of the harbour basin. We we shown to our table promptly and were looked after the whole evening by courteous and attentive staff. Our food was served promptly and the portions were very good. The restaurant has a reputation for its steaks and I found the Tornados Rossini to be excellent and the steak was done perfectly to my satisfaction and was very juicy. The homemade pate accompanying the dish was also very good. The wine list had a good selection of wines in most price brackets and my wife and I both enjoyed the Fleurie which went well with the steak even though many would have thought a Gamay would be too lightweight. My wife had a ham salad which was nicely presented and came with very generous portion of a very good ham. We were both, I am afraid too full to sample the desserts! I would be quite happy to recommend this restaurant for a good range of local dishes, well presented and in some cases quite imaginative.

Excellent food, wide choice of dishes in a stylish restaurant, highly recommended. There are a flight of stairs up to the restaurant so access can be limiting but allows good views over the harbour.

The Fish and Chip Shop is in our experience is without a doubt the BEST IN CAITHNESS AND SUTHERLAND! The fish was white and flakes. fried in beautiful crispy batter and the chips were perfect. We have experienced other Chip Shops in Wick,Thurso and Helmsdale, plus Mobile Chip Vans in Lybsterand Dunbeath and this has been the best so far too. We travelled around 30 miles to eat here and would do so again. THANK YOU.

After poor experiences in Oban and Fort William this place restored our faith in a Scottish breakfast and hospitality. Great service, even better breakfast made with quality ingredients.

If you’re taking the boat tour on Loch Ness this is where you’ll catch it. If not, it’s still a great pit stop to shop, have a bio break, grab a cold drink (or sample some gin!) and browse the shops. Surprisingly affordable souvenirs here. Stop won’t take long unless this is also your hotel… not sure of value or pricing on those. Great views of the Loch. Be careful of the very busy highway!
