Walked all the way from Great Easton expecting to get lunch. Only to be told they haven't been doing food since January. Pity they can't update their website so everyone knows. Have been here several times before but won't be going again.

We booked this one night stay in a double room in June so we could stay over for concerts at Audley end. When we went to check in another guest was being told they don’t have a room for him despite him having a confirmed booking. After the guest explained they needed to be at the concert for 3pm, the receptionist quickly gave him a room, mistakenly thinking he was performing in the concert. We then tried to book in, and again, our booking could not be found. Over the course of the next two hours I showed my booking several times to the receptionist, landlady and then the landlord. I contacted Hotels.com who confirmed my booking and they then contacted the hotel three times to find out what the problem was. Each time ended with the phone being put down and another rant front the landlord who “couldn’t understand what he was saying because he was a foreigner”. By this stage the landlord had told me that he doesn’t even have a contract with Hotels.com so I can’t have a booking, that all rooms were booked by a single group six months ago so they couldn’t possibly have accepted my booking three months ago and that I could have a twin room as that’s all they had left but I would need to pay the new higher price in cash. The receptionist was clearly out of her depth and the landlady, who was very nice, was clearly incompetent, shouting her catchphrase “I don’t do computers” over and over at the receptionist. The landlord however was just a rude, aggressive, nasty piece of work. After a couple of hours we had already missed the start of the concert and Hotels.com couldn’t find anywhere else for us. My wife was clearly getting upset by the landlord’s hostility and went outside. At this stage the landlords son appeared and asked what the problem was. I explained that we had a booking but according to the landlords we didn’t. He said he would take a look and within 30 seconds found our booking, quickly followed by a shout from the landlady “I told you I don’t do computers”. The rude and aggressive landlord was not seen again. The landlady was very apologetic and we were given a twin room as that was all they had left. In the morning we met other guests trying to check out but there no sign of any staff so we just left our keys and went. The other guests had been there for part of our ‘check in’ and asked what the problem was because the landlady was ‘effing and blinding’ for ages after we left for the concert. Having travelled extensively I can honestly say that this was the most incompetent and hostile staff I have ever met, excluding the son of course who was very competent. I wouldn’t go back if was paid to sleep there and you would be well advised not to either.

What a great find after a long hot walk, engaging bar staff and the chef made me an off menu lunch, the scrambled egg was delicious, the best I’ve had. Wish this was my local!

A friend suggested we went to The Farmhouse for lunch, he had visited before Covid as I hadn't been before. The Farmhouse is in a lovely location, we were warmly greeted, the bar looked typically 'country' and genial, the menu was varied and well priced and the dining area was very appealing and comfortable. The service was very friendly and efficient, the food we ordered was freshly cooked, very well presented and of excellent quality. It is one of those restaurants to which I will certainly return for a good meal in a comfortable setting and in a lovely country location. An extra plus; there's ample parking.

The room is rather tired and dated and has lightweight curtains that let in a lot of light in the morning. The bathroom heated towel rain could not be turned on so the room was cold. We stayed two nights but the room was not made up after the first night. The towels were still damp as no where to dry them £80 per night. No breakfast

Lovely decor and ambiance. Polite efficient staff. Great starter served quickly however the Salmon in lobster sauce was in edible as the whole meal was drenched in butter. Also we both ordered the same meal and one piece of fish was half the size of the other one which was not acceptable as they were the same price. As the main course was not edible and time was ticking on we had no chance but to leave the restaurant.

Had Sunday lunch at this relatively new restaurant. We had a Sunday roast which was excellent. The restaurant is a converted barn which has been lovingly converted keeping lots of the original features. All the food is cooked in an open kitchen which is very interesting to watch. The staff are very pleasant and helpful without being pompous. The price was very reasonable. This is an owner run restaurant and that makes the difference. We will go again soon

Try the weekend specials - there is always something to suit your taste. You have to be quick though because they seem to sell out at a rate of knots. This week I had the lamb and it was not only really tasty but really tender and could not find a scrap of fat which is unusual for lamb. Excellent value and service as always Sunday lunch here is great as well.

We were passing on our way home and decided (as we'd had some lovely meals there in the past) to stop off for something to eat to save having to cook after a long day. Wish we hadn't bothered. We both had a rump steak for approx £12 which we asked to be cooked medium rare. When it came out it was the thinnest, most gristly steak I have ever seen and because it was so thin was way overcooked. Served on a plate with chips, no veg,no salad garnish.....nothing. We both left over 1/2 the meals and nobody even questioned if everything was alright! Paid £45 for these plus a prawn cocktail (prawns on a bit of lettuce) and a stuffed mushroom (which was actually really nice!)Sadly, we won't be rising back in a hurry

Having read and relied upon previous reviews we looked at the website for the Farmhouse Inn for an overnight stay.We felt that the website was totally undermined by the poor standard of accommodation. The expected views from the bedroom window were non-existent, despite the pub being set in beautiful countryside. We looked out, from our ground floor window, onto a thick hedge 3 feet away! The only complimentary comments that could be made about our bedroom (No 1) was that there were clean sheets and the hot water was very hot. Otherwise the room was very tired and did not appear clean. The room itself was certainly not worth £90 per night, in fact £40 would have still been too much!We were happy to accept that as it was a Sunday evening, dinner would be served in the bar area only. The meal was adequate but with very limited choice, although it should be said that gammon was excellent. The waiting staff were very cheerful, helpful and efficient. A relief in an otherwise depressing situation!Breakfast was reasonable. The room in which it was served was clearly the restaurant which looked impressive with shining glasses, it was light and spacious with tables well laid. Hopefully the food served at lunch or dinner would be an improvement. The general standard was summed up in my view by the wording of a notice on the glass door leading from the bedrooms to the reception/bar area requesting those entering (from the bedrooms!!), to be considerate of other customers and to wear clean clothes and shoes!Oh dear, how sad and disappointing, in all we will certainly not visit again and really regretted doing so on this one and only occasion!

The Farmhouse Inn does bar meals and also has an A la Carte restaurant and accommodation. We found it by following a sign from the main road into Thaxted, which led up a little lane. It's in a very quiet location and has a delightful bar area where you can sit and eat your food. We didn't use the A la Carte Restaurant, but if the bar food is anything to go by it would be excellent. Good value for money and good home cooked tasting food. My Wife particularly enjoyed the fresh fruit salad. We appreciated the friendly and excellent service from Diane who we believe is the sister in law of the publican. Huge portions, loads of veg, and a great cauliflower cheese thrown in as a bonus, the roast potatoes were spot on too, always a good measure on a roast dinner out! Food and plates were piping hot, bonus points for that too service was great, lovely girls, and a really nice chilled atmosphere. We shared a chocolate fudge cake desert, which was to die for, definitely food coma inducing. The best roast I've had out in a long time, well done ✔️
