Would not recommend coming here. We came here for a family dinner and looked at the menu prior to our visit and none of the decent options are actually in their menu as they have recently changed - not reflected on their website menu. They seem to have removed most of the decent food. The food we did wasn’t the best, definitely with the prices they charged. Paid £13 for chip shop chips- though that is an insult to chip shop chips. Again, would really recommend to not come here, save yourself some money and go elsewhere.

Amazing family roast dinner. It was our first time at the pub and we struggled to park- I can see why! The roast pork was the best we’ve had in years, melted in your mouth. Great value for money. It was a very busy fast paced pub but we will definitely be back. Lovely caring staff who take the time out to talk to you during a busy shift. Very quick service too, but the meal tasted fresh. Unfortunately didn’t have room for dessert! But we will definitely be giving them a go next time after watching another table have some. Extra bonus is they give you additional gravy without even asking- huge win in my book! Thank you to all the staff for a lovely visit:)

DO NOT BOOK a friend booked afternoon tea for a baby shower for 17 people, maybe we were expecting too much, no tablecloths nothing. booked for 1;30 food came out 2:45, expected sandwiches cakes and scones on stands, instead had 3 x plates sandwiches, 1 x sausage rolls,1 x scotch egg and a bowl of chips , scones, chocolate tray bake cake no doubt from tesco and sponge cake the same. All put on one table to help yourself, in fact a perfectic buffet, since when does afternoon tea come like this. Totally Disgusted £16 per person. Even had to ask for tea and coffee, the manager wouldn't come to see us until the end when we were offered a drink. They should of refunded as it was not what was clearly booked with text confirming booking. Would give 0 rating if possible.

Have to say we were highly disappointed. After seeing good reviews and the place being recommended to us, I saw the homemade pie served in a dish with the puff pastry lid and mixed seasonal veg we just had to try. Well, I was served only green beans as the seasonal veg, a small portion of chips in some sort of metal pen pot & what looked to be a Peter’s pie. Don’t get me wrong, I’m partial to a peters pie but not for more than £1. I asked if the pie was homemade or bought in & the waitress said it was homemade. I guess the chef thinks like my husband, he says he’s cooked a lasagna after he’s warmed it in the oven. The starters were umm “ok”, similar to man of Gwent so we did expect a little more for a non-chain restaurant. The deserts we actually got refunded for so we won’t comment on those. There’s a reason it’s a set 2 course menu that’s all I will say. We always love to try new places especially pub type food as it’s usually homemade with a nice atmosphere but unfortunately it was our first and last visit. Ordering food which is slowly brought to the table (you have to ask for salt, pepper, vinegar & sauces they didn’t offer these) I was surprised to find we still had to go to the bar to order drinks. I didn’t think it was safe or appropriate for all those children to be in and out the kitchen either. Perhaps something to review. After dining at places like the rock & fountain, the gate etc our expectations were high as your set menu is the same price. Staff were friendly, just the standard of the food in comparison to other places of the same price was not there for us 6 food critics.

Very warm welcome on arrival and details taken as per the guidelines. It was a new menu £13 for two course lunch and far exceeded expectations. We were two diners had the ham hock terrine and mackerel tart to start both were stunning, then the pairs and leek sausages with braised red cabbage and mash and onion gravy also selected the chicken pie from the normal menu and paid the extra. We had a few special requirements which were all met with no problem at all. On arrival we were shown to our table and they came to check that we were ok and ready for our food. Which was then brought out first the tea quite a selection (they even had fruit tea) then the plates were coming out with savoury bits. Best scotch egg my mum had tasted in a long time. Then it was sandwiches, scones with cream and jam. Last but not least a selection of cakes. You were left alone if you needed extra water or tea bags they replenished it no problem at all. We had lunch here last Thursday for the first time in 14 months, having been regular customers over the last 5 years. It was good to see that there is new furniture and more comfortable seating and the restaurant looked generally very smart. There is good table separation but it was very quiet anyway, so we had no concerns about social distancing. Sensibly there is a one way system for customers and the sanitisation measures we observed seemed thorough. The friendly manager greeted us warmly and took our order. We chose from the 2 course menu @ £12 which offers ample options. All four dishes we tried were very nice and the portions were satisfactory. Of particular note was the steak and ale pie which had lovely pastry and was packed with good quality, tender meat. There was only one vegetable, Savoy cabbage, not my favourite, so a second vegetable would have been appreciated. We didn’t feel any need for a dessert, even though one of the options, sticky toffee pudding, is my favourite! The wine we chose, Argentinean Malbec, was very nice but we thought a bit expensive @ £18. Disappointingly we were unable to have coffee as apparently the brewery hadn’t yet supplied the machine. All the staff were very pleasant and professional and the pace of the meal was just right. It’s good to see the pub open again and apparently doing well under its new management. We will definitely be returning.

The restaurant manager greeted us with a smile and we chatted with the new owners who were so down to earth and very keen to make sure our visit was enjoyable. In fact, they were talking to many tables. Nothing was too much trouble. I had absolutely no concerns about social distancing, the pub is plenty big enough to accommodate groups and the staff have done this very well. The children’s play area is so handy too. We visited the Farmer’s Arms for Sunday lunch after hearing good things about the food. When we arrived the place was very full with no distancing. The chairs at the table next to us were so close that the waitress could not deliver food to the end of our table and had an accident with spilling gravy. The service was very slow and we left without having puddings and coffee. My starter of salmon fish cake was very nice but the mushroom soup was VERY thick. The meat was nice but I would have preferred it in slices rather than an inch thick piece! There was a good selection of vegetables and they were well cooked.

I booked to attend an event that was advertised on Facebook which included a meal in the price. The Facebook advertisement specified the different meals that were included in this promotion. We knew already what we were going to order so were looking forward to attending. However, after waiting a long time for the area to be set up (another event from earlier that day had overrun) we were finally seated and my friends and I were given a rough hand written menu on scrap paper which was different to the advertised menu on Facebook as it had smaller meals, less choice than the one advertised and some meals were missing altogether. An example of this was the lasagna on the original menu included chips but the hand written menu only offered a side salad. One friend had planned to have the festive burger but the new menu did not include it. We checked this with our waitress who asked me to show her the menu specified on the Facebook advertisement (which I was able to do) and she almost seemed a little annoyed at us for highlighting it. We requested that they honour the original menu so she had to leave and ask someone if it was ok, she returned after 5 minutes to confirm it except for the festive burger. When the food came out, it was very small portions for all of us and I counted 5 chips on my plate and 2 of us had lukewarm/cold Lasagna. Already a little underwhelmed by the experience we then found that due to the delay in setting up the tables and serving the food, the act that we paid to see began late but still finished at her scheduled time, meaning that we all lost out on time with her. During her performance, it was difficult to hear her over the sound of the customers and staff from the bar and the other room.It was also extremely cold and I overheard a few people complaining about the temperate inside the building but this was not helped by non ticket holding customers walking in and out of the door. Overall a disappointing experience.

Fabulous food and service. The bar staff are very friendly and knowledgeable on the menu. Really good value for money, my only constructive criticism would be the crumble advertised on the dessert menu, doesn't have a traditional breadcrumb topping. It comes with a porridge and pine nut topping, this needs to be clearly advertised for diners with nut allergies to be aware. Staff were fabulous and swapped it for me but I like many others were unaware of the nuts until I took a mouthful. Would definitely visit again.

Table booked for 18 people mix of adults and older children. Order took nearly an hour to arrive, wouldn't mind but the few other tables had been served. Children meals served first at same time people were having starters. Food arrived very slowly and starter plates still on the table. Onion rings missing off most meals which then had to be cooked so came half way through the meal. Two people had no food as they didn't have what had been ordered but were told after everyone else had their food. Steak burgers were raw. Waited at least half an hour to then have to ask for children's ice cream and drinks (which are part of the menu offer). All glasses were stinking dirty, cans of Coke are all covered in something, not sure what, after three attempts got a clean can. Forks were dirty. We booked for 1pm after a bracing walk. The pub was warm and comfortable and we chatted for an hour before the main course came. The food was lovely and fresh. My brie starter with onion jam and green leaf salad was a delight. Prettily served and a nice portion size. Some people had roasts, but I chose the hollandaise salmon main course, perfectly cooked, but I removed the skin that I would have liked to eat if it had been crisp. The hollandaise sauce was lovely like home-made with a smooth texture and slight lemony tang. Lots of accompanying mixed vegetable dishes that were just right, fresh and perky with a little bite, and plenty of extra gravy or sauce. The trifle was nice: jelly, custard, and cream, other people's berry crumble looked lovely, rather a large portion. The service was a bit slow, but when we asked, we were served quickly. It was a warm homely atmosphere, some tables had families with children. I would go there again, and recommend the food.

Sunday lunch booking for 4 people made months ago on a recommendation. Restaurant had lots of empty tables so definitely not busy. Staff nice, polite and accommodating, nice decor. The first thing I noticed was their black clothing was marked and dirty. We waited 85 minutes for the first course which was ok. The main course took another 30 to 40 minutes to arrive. I was apalled to see they had served veg for 4 people in ONE dish...6 vegetables all mixed in together! Tough if you didn't like any of them! Meat was fine, roast potatoes were anaemic and hard...probably frozen. We had taken a birthday cake in a box. They were kind enough to light candles and present it to birthday lady. When I asked for the box to take the cake home, they brought it - covered in salad dressing and smelling of stale smoke. It was obvious they had retrieved it from the bin. Instead of being honest and offering to wrap cake in cling film or foil, they said and did nothing. Will not be returning.

After seeing so many people rave about this particular place for afternoon tea I specifically asked to go there for my 40th birthday treat with my husband - We booked for a Saturday afternoon, and when we got there we were pointed to the table, which had cups, saucers and a couple of napkins. We had already been asked when arriving if we wanted tea or coffee, and it was promptly brought to the table, but we had to take the teaspoons form the table behind us to have something to stir our tea with. When our sandwiches arrived, the platter and a bowl of crisps were plonked down and the waitress walked off, I though, to get some plates, but no, it became apparent after a few minutes that that was not the case, so I had to go and ask for plates, which were duly brought. After the sandwiches were done, the cake stand appeared with cakes, and the waitress again disappeared, I was hopeful for clean plates as some cutlery, but alas again, disappointment. I had to again to go the bar and ask for cutlery, and we just used the same plates as we had used for our sandwiches. When we went to go we were asked if we wanted to take the remaining cakes with us, which we said would be lovely, and we were handed a roll of tinfoil! What should have been a lovely treat for me just ended up being an experience in bad service and made the whole experience mediocre at best. I wouldn't rush to go back, and I wouldn't recommend to anyone looking for a lovely experience with friends or family.

Had a beef dinner for main which was very nice and came with loads of vegetables! Then had trifle for dessert which was nice enough but a bit plain. Overall it was very nice food and for a really reasonable price (think it was around £13 for 3 courses). All staff were helpful and polite, would visit again.

Very well presented pub and convenient for Spytty and the Wetlands. Friendly staff. Fish, chips and peas very good - especially the chips which were excellent and crispy on the outside, soft in the middle. Would have preferred tartare sauce not to come in a packet as a little pot of homemade would have moved very good to excellent. Would definitely recommend and visit again.

Farmers arms is a fantastic place, we went for my daughters 10th Birthday, 5 children 2 adults. The staff were brilliant, so friendly and welcoming, couldn’t do enough for us. Food was plentiful and tasty, kids had set meal which was great and we had 2 courses for £12 excellent value! They brought her cake (which I was allowed to provide) out singing happy birthday to her!

It had been a few months since my last visit, and booked to celebrate my parents wedding anniversary. We arrived to a lovely friendly welcome and once seated realised it was steak night. Great choice where you could choose from meat choices, choice of potatoes, two sides and a dip. Lots on offer and cooked beautifully. Portion sizes are generous and no processed rubbish - home cooked loveliness.

We visited the Farmers Arms last night. They have a menu which gives you two courses for £12!! You can pay a supplement of only £2 for a Rib-Eye steak. The starters were fresh and tasty. We all chose the steak - i can be hard to please where steak is concerned - but I couldn’t fault it! The peppercorn sauce and chips were very good!

Although a great location and building, really disappointed with this visit. I had heard great reviews about this establishment but was quite surprised how quiet it was considering the reputation it was renown for and it being the Friday before Christmas. Personally my meal was satisfactory but my friends were not up to the standard. The staff on the other hand we very pleasant and friendly and did their upmost to rectify the issues that we had immediately.

Came here with my daughter as she had heard good reviews about the afternoon teas and we were not disappointed! We were greeted by cheerful staff and seated quickly and offered tea, coffee or a drink. This came quickly, along with a lovely selection of mixed sandwiches and a bowl of crisps. After a little while, we were offered a refill on our tea and an impressive 3 tier cake stand was delivered, full of beautiful home made cakes! The scones were served warm with plenty of jam and clotted cream and were lovely......along with victoria sandwich, profiteroles, mini cream puffs, chocolate brownies, oreo cheesecake, madiera cake and little individual trifles....all of which were delicious! We had so much food we couldnt finish it all. I would definitely recommend coming here. Thankyou for a delicious afternoon.

Chose the Farmers to meet up with friends for Xmas. Must say it was very disappointing. Walking in to the pub there was zero atmosphere. I asked for some music to be played. The food arrived, starters were nice but the main course...roast turkey was awful. Very dry meat, conjealed gravy and all at a tepid temperature. Would have sent it back but nobody came over to ask how our food was. The choice of desserts was poor, not Christmassy at all. We complained and had two meals taken off the bill and the chef sent out a bottle of wine. Which was appreciated but cant help but think that on a night where the restaurant was very quiet these mistakes should not happen in the first instance. From 9pm onwards we were the only ones left in the place and felt like we were in the way of closing time. A disappointing evening.

After ringing up last minute to book a table for our spontaneous Date night, we were accommodated immediately. They have a widely varied set menu 2 courses for £12 or 3 courses for £15, me and my partner both had the chickem strips which were amazing! And both had the steak burger and but also added an egg to mine we couldn't fault it one bit. The food was to a high expectation which it gladly met. I normally love this pub but unfortunately today I was very disappointed. We arrived for our 2:00pm booking and ordered our drinks and meals. The food & staff were fine. When we were asked if we wanted dessert we were told that we could only have the table for 1.5 hours and we had already been sat there for 1 hour 10mins! Also they didn't have some of the desserts left so we had to choose something else after ordering. We weren't told when booking the table or when we arrived that we had a limited time. It's a bit ridiculous only allowing 1.5 hours for a 3 course meal for 5 people. One of our party had their dessert taken away before they had finished! People were waiting for our table which made us feel uncomfortable. They had obviously overbooked massively which was a real shame.

My wife, son, brother and myself called in here on the off chance after going for a long sea walk and were all very impressed. The friendly bar staff were very accommodating, even letting us make a bed on one of the huge armchairs for my son who was fast asleep! We all had 3 courses - beef for main all round which was delicious, served with plenty of vegetables and a massive gravy boat. At £12.95 for 3 courses it offers fabulous value for money - only I managed to finish my dessert! We're already planning our return but this time with the rest of the family.

They offer gorgeous food with very reasonable prices with 2 different menus one offering 2 courses for 12 or 2 courses for 16. The portions are satisfying. Was a very good recommendation from a friend and il be sure to pass on the good reviews and be back again soon for another delicious meal.

Visited as a couple today for afternoon tea. Excellent selection of sandwiches and cakes that were more than adequate for two people. Had to take some cakes home as we couldn't finish them at the time. Nice atmosphere with a combination of families and couples dining or taking afternoon tea. The only reason that we didn't give a higher rating, was due to the fact that amazingly only full fat or soya milk is offered in the tea or coffee. This unfortunately marred an otherwise positive visit as we were looking froward to enjoying a cuppa with the food. Apart from offering semi-skimmed milk ( which I believe is now more widely used than full fat) , some minor suggestions to improve the overall visual and taste experience for customers could be to serve tea in china cups and to use paper doilies on each layer of the cake stand and on sandwich tray. I would also suggest offering plain crisps with the sandwiches as smoky bacon isn't to everyone's taste.

Came here with friends and was seated down immediately and staff were attentive. There was 5 of us and between us all, there was more than enough to go around. Sandwiches were yummy and cakes were delicious. Couldn't eat it all so took some food home with me. Was very relaxed and enjoyed my time there and of course the food. Would like to go back to try main menu.

11 of us had Afternoon Tea here on Saturday. There was an enormous amount of food and several varieties of sandwich fillings on different types of bread. The cake stands were amazing, and the scones were still warm. Everything was homemade. We had several pots of tea and coffee. The staff were very accommodating and helpful. At £12 per head this was exceptional value for money compared to other places (and we've tried most other venues in Newport/Cardiff). If there was any improvement I could suggest it would be to perhaps replace some of the sandwiches with savoury pastries. But I'd still go here from now on anyway! Amazing!
