Went in for lunch with my husband. The place was pretty unloved really compared to previous visits. The tables were all sticky. Loud group in pool room swearing & shouting and rap music playing loudly which contained a lot of swearing (bare in mind this place markets itself as a family establishment & there were kids in)! The food was basic - cheap and not so cheerful. I had a homemade steak & kidney pie. It had about 6 small pieces of steak in it and the rest was watery gravy. Chips were cheap frozen ones. We had heard it had changed hands and thought we’d give it a go but I’m afraid we won’t be back.

Personal amable.

What is wrong with this place , it used to be a good place to go , I have been going on and off most of my life , in the last few years it has changed hands more than a pack of cards . I have avoided the place since I had a dissappointing meal , but as a local I decided to try for another 'last visit , what a terible experience , bad food bad service , it always shows to me when I enter a pub/restuarant on Saturday evening and there is a lonely old man sat at the bar and no other customers that the place is bad , time for another deal of the cards I think , somebody must win one day..

One of the worst places I've ever been to in my life !! We went here last night for tea with family we arrived and ordered our food at 5 o'clock we waited 2hours for our food in the mean time after waiting 45 minutes already they came to us and told us they were out of 2 of the items we had been waiting for, so we changed to something else we then waited a further hour and 15 minutes by this point the kids were hungry upset and we was irritated the food all came out at different times it wasn't what we had ordered and wasn't edible in the slightest we had no apology and was quit clear bar staff and chef hadn't a clue how to cook or serve people , we complained about our food and the service and was met by a very angry aggressive rude chef who wasn't interested in what we had to say , we finally got half our money back and left ... would never set foot in the place again and warn others never to go !!!

Been to this pub tonight for tea with family, ordered 2x shepherds pie served with pickles and baget, cheese burger and chips, hungry farmer burger and chips, pizza, and one child's meal chicken nuggets ,beans and chips, first problem card machine not working so paid cash, after waiting 45mins we were told there were no nuggets so decided on sausages after another 45mins the pizza arrived, then the burgers turned up with one portion of chips no salad garnish, pizza finished and the shepherds pies came describing it as bland is being kind, it was served with chips and frozen veg after asking for the pickles and baget we were served with silver skin onions and a toasted bap with marg! We decided to complain and were met with a very negative response (again I am being kind with my words) eventually we were given half our money back. Never use this Pub if you enjoy food as you will be very disappointed.

First visit to this pub and it will be my last! Menu stated sandwiches - when I asked what fillings? The young man at the bar had no idea! After finding out I ordered 2 sandwiches and chips - an hour later our food had still not arrived- I approached the lady behind the bar to ask how much longer how food would be and she was very rude! 'It's being done now!!!' She snapped! Sorry but how long does a sandwich and chips take!!! When it finally arrived it was basically a plain white sandwich and chips - no salad or garnish - it was placed on table with no offer of sauces or condiments! Toilets were very dated and smelled badly of damp!!! This is no way to run a business!! Very disappointed in our visit! To be fair to the chef - apparently he had to boil eggs especially for my egg mayo sandwich which was the only redeeming part of the whole experience.

Loved this pub so much in its better times. Was once the busiest pub in Bolton. Again new management without a clue. Open at reasonable times!!! Food times are stupid. We've been before and been very impressed with the food. When we arrived on this visit, the place seemed different from our last visit. More drinkers, more signs for 'live entertainment'. When speaking to the staff, they said it had been taken over recently. We got talking to new manager/owner/chef who told us he'd taken it over 10 days ago and it had taken a lot of work to turn it around. I'm not sure what it was being turned around from - although the exterior and interior looked a bit tired and dated, the food had always been fantastic. Anyway, the menu had all changed. Typical pub grub. Very cheap but you get what you pay for. Beef burger and chips for £3.95. Realistically, how can that be of a good standard? As expected - the food was typical pub grub. Veg overcooked, frozen chip, too much salt, meatballs dry, etc. Had to send drinks back - fizzy drinks were flat. The doorway/curtain into the outdoor area was left open so smoke from smokers was wafting back into the restaurant. It seems that the 'turn around' the new management were talking about was taking it from understated gourmet food to a typical local, specialised in cheap drinks, football and evening entertainment. Interested to know where the previous chefs have gone as we'd like to sample their cooking again. We'll not be visiting here again.

Found this place through Tripadvisor thought on off chance it would be ok. Drove into the car park looked like a dive needs major refurbishment. Walked in there was a notice sayin they served food unil 8pm and we got there just before 7pm. Was desperate to use the loo. They need a major clean couldnt even sit on toilet...when asked for a menu was told they stopped serving at 7. So thought stuff it walked out theyve lost custom and money.

Sticky toffee pudding was one of the deserts which was served with ice cream we asked if we could have custard instead they was in unaccommodating despite there being another desert with custard and two chefs because everything was apparently portioned. having been in the Farmers Arms a couple of times before , we were disappointed to see that there was no improvement , we were let down the last time I was in by not getting what I ( and what was printed on the menu) asked for but , to be fair I thought I would give another try ,. This time after reading the menu , if you like cajun there were at least three dishes with it on , I decided on a rare steak and chips, though done rare was juicy and tender but there was a burned ( i couldn't put a name to it ) flavour to it , the chips were dried and very crispy a bit over done as if they had been re-fried and there was a small heated up tomato , it was as the menu said , steak and chips nothing else , a bit if salad or peas would have given a bit of colour to it , I dont think I would go again , I expected a lot better from a ' Master Chef ' . There are better places around and a bit cheaper with more brightness to the food ..

We visited because I followed them on Twitter after being recommended in the people you might know section. After months of seeing some pretty impressive photos of their food on Twitter we decided to visit. We arrived at 5pm on Friday. While the food was great for the price we paid (£29.59 for 2 adult meals a side of onion rings a kids meal & 2 drinks) the overall atmosphere was awful! You couldn't really enjoy the meal because you felt you were sat in Last of the Summer Wine! We'd go again for food but only if its updated!

Visited one evening, first impressions are not great from the outside but I didn't let this deter me.Inside was very dated, no ambience, noisy local radio station over the speakers, a large tv on loudly in another corner.Funny damp smell as soon as you walk in.No tablecloth of any type or table matsWhite paper napkins & a knife & fork just put down on the tableI noticed crumbs under our table & a plastic top off a drinks bottle, not a big deal you could say but to me showed lack of attention to detail.I had cheese & onion pie with chips. The pie was nice though I think it was cheese, leek & potato pie & the chips were thick home made chips. The meal didn't look appealing as for some strange reason a "plastic" yellow liquid cheese had been poured over it - unecessary. The service was polite & friendly but we wont be returning.

I'd heard really good things about Farmers Arms, including from various foodie blogs so when my friend suggested a visit I was excited to try the food. As others have mentioned, the interior is a bit dreary, but I don't usually let this put me off as some of the best food I've had is from drab looking places. I ordered one of their burgers with a side of cheese and bacon chips. The burger was tasty, but a little dry. I was expecting it to be cooked medium rare as most good burger places do, but it was overcooked. There was nothing really to set it apart from other pub burgers if I'm honest. Just a nice burger. The chips looked and tasted like standard pub chips. The food wasn't bad, it just wasn't better than most places. I eat out in Manchester a lot, regularly going to Solita, Almost Famous and the Handmade Burger Co., and all those places do burgers so much better. I wouldn't be against going back if friends wanted to do, but I don't think I'd pick it over a lot of other places.

I went here this evening with out of town family and my brother who loves this place and raves about the food. I have to admit to be being dubious about the area as it is not the best. But, the place was warm and inviting, staff attentive and friendly and the food was amazing. We had been told about the steak and ale pie so two people ordered. My goodness you could have fed us all. Piri piri chicken wings were so hot, the steak ordered was perfection and the cheese and leek tart just right. Add really good chips and onion rings and no room for anything else...but....he sells Holdens ice creams which is a local ice cream parlour. Ever had malteser ice cream?? No, neither had I, or Vimto, or, being nearly Bonfire night, parkin ice cream! Add an enormous brownie with a pint of whipped cream, and we were rolling out!!!Will be back. Thanks Jon, you should be proud.

Every so often you stumble across a right little cracker. We've been going to the Farmer's Arms ever since they opened, and have seen them go from strength to strength. Whether it's their crackers quizzes, imaginative theme nights, mouth watering specials or ever changing pies of the day, they are always concocting something new. My personal favourites include the Steeplejack burger (named after Bolton lad Fred Dibnah) and anything with the fried chicken on it. Hell. Fire. The Farmer's Arms are offering good pub food with a bit of a cheeky edge. If you love your Manchester style burgers, you'll be laughing, but then old faithfuls like fish and chips are also on the menu. On my last visit I had one of the daily specials - beef chilli served on a bed of 50/50 fries with healthy dollops of sour cream, guacamole and salsa. Christ alive it was out of this world! Just as I was leaving they received a delivery of Parkin ice cream from Holden's too. I'll be back to sample that stuff! You'll always be greeted by a friendly face and something hearty at the Farmer's. I recommend it to everyone I know!

We'd been to jumbles country park and were looking for somewhere nearby to eat afterwards, didn't know the area so went purely by TripAdvisor. It had great reviews so we went for it. Weren't put off by exterior as a few reviews had said not to be, it turns out that the general consensus of judging a book by its cover should have been used here! Credit where credit is due, the interior was clean as was the back bar and the guy who served us although a little shy was friendly and attentive. The food however was a let down after the reviews we had read. The burgers were over done by a country mile, I'm a chef and my pub is known for its burgers, and for some reason people seem to be scared of them and cook them to within an inch. The pulled pork was also over done and the fries were soggy as if dropped into cold oil. It may have just been a bad day, maybe the rest of the time the burgers are not dry and unseasoned. The fried chicken in my burger was ok, as was the bacon. Shame as like I said the rest of your reviews are good, so it was either an off day today or standards have slipped.

My partner is diabetic and does not eat large meals, I like to push boat out when I eat out, only to regret it later! So, we decided to go for the senior citizens option. We were pleasantly surprised. For £5.50 each, we got a pot of tea each, lovely tasty tomato soup, with a warmed granary roll, very nicely presented. Then I had fish thick cut chips n mushy peas, he had sausage n mash with gravy. We were not over-faced with a plateful of chips, or potato, and each item of food was very tasty, and well presented! We were truly impressed with our meals, the service, and the value for money! We will definitely "come again!"

From the outside it looks like your usual suburban hostelry frequented by locals. In fact if you were looking for food above and beyond the norm, the outside and perhaps the locals might have you driving on. Yet drive on at your loss. This place is very heavily praised on TripAdvisory, especially the burgers. And it was the Notorious P.I.G. burger I had today. A double burger, with cheese, slaw, pulled pork, bacon and barbecue sauce in a white bun. Served with crispy thin French fries. Delicious. Proper home made burgers. Tasted like quality beef too. Chose the Farmers Arms at random, fancying a proper Sunday roast and were not disappointed. Sunday lunch menu 13.95 for 3 courses with traditional and innovative choices, plus the usual menu which was very tempting.I chose the bread board instead of a starter, bread heaven with dipping oil, butter and bacon jam... Yes really! Husband picked the homemade tomato soup, which was chunky with peppers and onions and delicious. Today's roasts , pork or beef, had one of each and both very good, pork fatty but tender and veg nicely done. Just had room for waddle, ice cream and toffee sauce, large glass of wine (nice to be offered a choice) and pint of real ale brewed in horwich, which at £2 a pint was great value and went down very well. Staff were friendly, couldn't believe they weren't busy but apparently that's unusual

Me and the OH have been here a few times now while visiting friends in Bolton. So glad they've finally got a decent local. Have to say i've even started timing my visits depending on what creations i've seen on the facebook page. The burgers are my favourite, particularly the colonel. I tried the pigs in blankets terrine just before Christmas and not sure I can wait another year to try that again. Specuals board has been tempting on each visit. The desserts are the absolute star finale. Really imaginative, always been tasty and well presented and everything is great value for money. Bar staff did a great job too. As others have said in their reviews, when you like a decent tipple its a breath of fresh air to find people that know what theyre talking about and keen to help. I took some convincing before i'd eat anywhere in the area but this place is a real hidden gem!!!

After reading much hype amongst the Manchester food bloggers, we decided to visit The Farmers arms for the 1st time end of december. My OT opted for the xmas menu whilst I had the sunday lunch. Food was very nicely presented and of an excellent quality on this occasion and for the price, very worth while. As we enjoyed our 1st visit so much, we decided to return again (also on a Sunday) after reading it had re-opened after the new year and with a new menu. We both ordered the Steeplejack burger. When this arrived, we were so dissapointed, the "hand made" burger looked like a frozen bought one-the meat so so compact and did not taste good (having had burgers from almost famous & Solita, we know what a hand pressed burger looks like.) The chicken and piece of bacon that was on top was so dry and overcooked, certainly did not look anything like the photos I had seen on bloggers pages! The hand cut chips were good though. All in all, very mixed opinions on this place, maybe we were very unlucky on our second visit, it was very quiet, maybe need to visit again to see :(

We've been meaning to sample the food at the Farmer's Arms for a while. Good reviews convinced us to give it a try and we weren't disappointed. Really, really good pub grub at a reasonable price. Home made soup with freshly baked bread & scampi with home-made tartar sauce saw us off to a very good start. For mains, hubby had the mixed grill, huge portions of good quality, tasty, well cooked food. I had the home made cheese & onion pie, mash & veg. Pastry was melt in your mouth, sorry to say I couldn't finish it or try the sweets which looked very appealing. 2 courses, 3 rounds of drinks for two for less than £50, we'll be back!

We had heard some great comments on the recently re-opened Farmers Arms in Darcy Lever, especially those from the ever reliable Dollybakes food blog. Determined to see for ourselves, we arrived at 7.30 on a cold and wet November Wednesday night, our hopes not that high, given the generally mediocre state of food in Bolton these days. We were immediately greeted warmly and welcomingly on our arrival, our drinks orders were taken and menus promptly delivered in a friendly and professional manner. The Farmers has an excellent selection of beers and guest ales and decent wine too, not the usual 'red or white' more common in Bolton pubs! Bar staff are knowledgable about their products and eager to discuss the merits of various local craft ales. The menu is extensive and imaginative, ranging from more traditional pub fare to a range of dishes more commonly found in the more trendy Manchester food hotspots. The food was excellently prepared, cooked and presented with the use of very obviously high quality ingredients, all served with an air of polite efficiency all too rare anywhere these days. We will certainly be returning at the next opportunity!

Living just 10 minutes for The Farmers Arms its a very welcome gastro pub in an area where getting good food is very hit & miss. The Menu is varied, we all order different starters with the Black Pudding Fritters being the favourite. I opted for my usual Fish n Chips for main course which was very good and the special Venison went down a treat as well, The desserts were just to die for, they would not look out of place in the top restaurants in Manchester City Centre. My Oreo Cheesecake was just superb. All in all the quality of the food was excellent, we hope this new venture is a success as it is much needed in the area.

Firstly, the food when it eventually arrived was very nice. Chicken breast (small), chips (small), chicken gravy (pathetically small), 2 miniscule cubes of cornbread - all for nearly £14. Portion control rules here & unless you have a voucher & then still is ridiculously expensive. A sharing mixed grill was £50. Steaks not much change from £30! Jesus, it's a chain. No atmosphere at all in the Horwich, Bolton branch. 1st & very much last visit. Came home & made some toast....twas still hungry.
