We decided to try the tavern as it had been highly recommended by friends and we weren't let down. The food is excellent and couldn't be faulted, the staff were so happy and polite and for a busy Sunday you couldn't ask for anything better. I can highly recommend the lasange, it was fresh and could tell it had been homemade hats off to the chefs. The staff serving always had a smile on their face and made us feel at home. 10/10 on the desserts, we will most definatly be back in the near future.

Went for lunch on a wednesday, the place was packed which was a good sign, checked in with staff and shown to my table, almost immediately drinks waiter came up, also left jugs of iced water, I had a chili which was lovely with a fish cake starter, my colleague had a chicken salad, all the food was first class and cheap about 18 pounds for both. A million miles from the soulless chains of Americana or faux Italian. Most excellent.

I used to visit Tavern Fayre as a child and loved the space jacks play area (not sure if it's still there or not), but my first visit as an adult has proven to be disappointing. The pub in itself is a lovely place and most of the staff were quite friendly towards us and our noisy toddler but the food sadly let us down. I had the steak with chips, onion rings, mushrooms and tomato. The steak was very dry and not well seasoned, could of done with sauce to try and make up for lost flavour but the price put me off. The chips tasted like frozen oven chips, too thick and mushy inside, mushrooms were okay. Not worth the price at all.My partner had the gourmet burger meal, his burger was very tasty wish I had of ordered one too. Chips were also rubbish in his opinion too.My son had a children's pizza which came out as a chicago town mini pizza, which I can buy a pack of two for a pound from the supermarket, not what you'd expect to be served at a restaurant for the price of almost five pounds. All in all the food has put us off for life and I don't think we will revisit, prices quite steep too. sorry guys..

Hadn't visited this restaurant for ages as we have moved away from the area but today we went for tea and I realise just how much I miss it. My husband and myself both had turkey with all the trimmings. It was absolutely delicious and worth every penny of the £10.99 per head. Everything was cooked to perfection and was piping hot. I would definitely recommend this restaurant without hesitation.

Enjoyed a Christmas meal here with a group of 18 friends, yesterday. Christmas meal, wasn'texpecting it to be great, but - it was! Really tasty starter and main course, far better than one I had nearby recently. Lovely desserts. I had the light meals - smaller portions, perfectly adequate! Esp when eating three courses! Enjoyed a great night here for a large family meal. The food was great and so was the ale. It was a shame the party was split into two tables as we felt abit left out from the main group on ours. Tip to others, do not wear a jumper as the place very well heated. I chose gammon and egg for my main and it was lovely. The waitress was very polite and efficient in taking all of our orders. It is nice to go somewhere with a nice big seating area for a pre meal chat and drink before being seated :) always plenty of parking spaces too.

It's been many a year since I visited here and it's all changed. I'm delighted to say for the better too. We visited here for lunch and we had the mixed grill and gammon. Local meats, fabulously cooked and whilst not cheap, they were well worth the money. The only reason why it isn't five is because nobody came to ask how our meals were and so we couldn't tell them how pleased we were. Definitely be back.

You cannot pre-book a table at this restaurant, you report to reception on entering the building and are given a waiting time for a table to become available. In our case, it was up to an hour. We waited 45 minutes and once seated at our table, waited another half hour for the food to arrive. I was unable to order my choice of meal, a lasagne available on the 'light meals menu' because it was a Sunday and this menu was only available for OAPs?????? I struggled to find an alternate meal as the menu was limited. I decided on a cheeseburger with chips (not really my thing). When the burger arrived it was more than overcooked, I could hardly cut it in half. Not somewhere I would recommend and I certainly will not be returning!

I went for a family meal. It appears very popular having to wait for over half an hour even at the later end of lunch and considering the number of seats. Portion size was adequate and meals could be tailored with for the more fussy eater. I do find it slightly odd paying up front but that's often the case for a pub.

We entered the building and were just about to take a seat at a table in the lounge when the apparent Manageress rushed towards us and asked if we were dining. When my husband explained we were probably only staying for a drink she rudely told us to move into another part of the building. The place we attempted to sit at is not in the main restaurant, it's in the lounge. We left without ordering drinks vowing never to return. It's a pity as the restaurant looks reasonable but I won't tolerate such rudeness. Standard pub food menu but well prepared. Unfortunately when I tries to book a table on the telephone i was told that as it was Saturday night they did not accept bookings. On arrival our party was told that we had a 50 to 60 minute wait for a table. After 60 minutes a table was ready. Our order placed but sadly it took 45 minutes for the meals to arrive. Due I suspect to the large number of clients and insufficient staff. The food when it arrived was hot and freshly prepared and met our expectstions. However 1 hour 45 minutes from arrival to eating is poor service. On the basis of this experience I am unlikely to return.

This was my first visit to The Tavern Fayre at Hunger Hill Bolton and I stopped by for lunch with a friend whilst we were in the area. It appeared to be quite busy when we arrived at Sunday lunch time, and although we were advised that there could be a short wait, we were shown to our table within minutes of getting our drinks from the bar.We each had a lovely roast turkey lunch followed by very tasty desserts from a large selection on the menu. The staff were pleasant and efficient, we took our time with our meal, did not feel rushed and we could hear ourselves speak despite the place being very busy. I would go again if ever in the area and needed a hot, satisfying meal.

We go to the Tavern occasionally and have always been happy with our meals there however after our latest visit we enjoyed it so much that I feel moved to post a review. There's a good atmosphere about the place as it's invariably fairly full - not too full though and we've been able to get a table easily enough albeit after a short wait. The food is excellent and the service the same with the food coming out at exactly the right pace. The bar area is perfect for a pre or post dinner 'livener' (yes, we usually do both!) although getting a drink can sometimes be a bit of a trial. Another bar person and a bit of glass shifting wouldn't go amiss. The prices are about right as well. Not cheap but not overly expensive.

6 of us arrived at the restaurant at 9.25pm after being at an awards night which had finished a lot later than expected hoping to find somewhere that would still serve us some food. Even though they finished serving at 9.30pm they still let us order food and the customer service was still excellent even though they were probably all dying to get home. The food arrived quickly and everyone was pleased with their meals and we were never made to feel like we were being rushed out the door. I really like the Tavern and have been there a few times. In general both the food and the service are excellent, but I was a bit disappointed at the weekend when I specially asked the waitress if the mashed potatoes were freshly made from potatoes on the premises or whether it was made from bought-in pellet mash...I was assured it was not pellet mash but when I was served with my meal - liver and onions served with mashed potatoes, it was plainly pellet mash (I am sure others will agree that pellet mash has a different taste altogether to freshly prepared and made mashed potatoes, and in fact in my mind, sadly tastes like instant mashed potatoes :(Since I had already asked I didn't make a fuss about it, I just left it all on the plate, but it did mean that I had only eaten half my main meal.I was due to take another friend this week who has a strong allergy to the pellet mash (I am guessing to a preservative ingredient of some kind?) so I telephoned to ask the question again. I was initially told AGAIN that the mash was definitely NOT pellet mash and when I asked further, explaining that my friend would have a violent reaction if it was, I was told they would check again - and then came back to say the mash IS in fact pellet mash that is bought in from elsewhere... :(Deep sigh.... I do wish restaurants would be honest... the food at the Tavern is lovely and the service is great, but please don't say its one thing when its another? My friend and I went elsewhere today on principle... :- \Sorry its a bad review on this occasion Tavern, but please - just be honest? (and ideally - make the mash match the rest of your food - make proper mash - on the premises and made fresh!) :))) x

We hadn't booked so decided to pop in at around 7pm and see what it was like. Despite the dining room being about half full, we were invited to take a seat in the bar, the host took our name and said it would be about 10 minutes. We got our drinks and sat chatting in the nice bar area. Having a lovely conversation when:"DAVID TABLE FOR FOUR NOW READY DAVID TABLE FOR FOUR" Sounded throughout the pub! Literally so loud you had to stop talking. This continued every couple of minutes as they used a Public Address System to inform lucky diners their table is ready.Soon it was our turn and the booming voice from the ceiling told us our table for 2 was ready.Throughout our meal, which was actually very nice, we were continuously interrupted by these announcements. Surely there must be a better way? Quite why they can't just make a note of "Bloke and Lady with glasses and a blue shirt" and come over and quietly inform us our table is ready is beyond me. The host station is approximately 15 ft from the bar.It really did make us laugh, and spoil what would have actually been a good meal.Foodwise it was spot on, she had fish and chips, I had gammon and both were lovely, especially the gammon which was a big thick steak of gammon. The service was fine, a bit rushed and to be honest I think the whole set up is designed rather more for elderly diners than us young (ish) versions. The tables had paper mats instead of either no mats or a table cloth, the menus were glossy and clearly don't change every few days / weeks. Even the chalk boards are actually printed signs, so I suspect everything is formulaic, however....the food was actually good.Don't think we'll be going back though because we don't fancy TABLE having FOR to SMITH try NOW and AVAILABLE talk TABLE around FOR the THREE highly FOR intrusive SMITH tannoy!

Please let me start by saying that I don't mind paying good money for a good portion of food. The Tavern has been a local mainstay of ours for a number of years. The staff are efficient and friendly, the table service very good. Jane, the manager and her deputy run it like a military operation. As stated by other reviewers, there is a plentiful menu choice to suit everyone, including vegetarians and yes, it is all cooked freshly. No complaints about the food itself, the only comment is that the portions, particularly a very recent Ploughmans, the serving was a little short, in terms of 1 sliver of cheese, 3 finely cut and small pieces of ham and 1 pickled onion cut in half, along with other small quantities of pickled items, albeit the pot of pate was delicious and plentiful. Enjoyed, but not enough for £10-95.Normally, all other portions are fine, but let themselves down on this one (for the record, last Weds 29/4, early afternoon).Nice airy place, really good for family occasions or, as in my case on this occasion ideal for a business lunch, pleasant atmosphere and good staff. At the end of the day it's a pub, but a cut above, verging on a restaurant. Only negative is just that it's a little overpriced, but a regular treat none the less and always enjoyable.

Visited in April just for some food. Thought the menu was very expensive for what they were offering. In an a la carte restaurant steak is usually around £18-£20, and I was shocked to see a similar price in somewhere where you order food at the bar.The food would have not been disappointing have it that it wasn't so expensive, or if it was delivered with at least a slight smile from the waitress. When you have options such as Weatherspoons next to places like these, you get much greater value for money and much better service.

First a very long wait for a table, even though there were empty tables, but they were obviously reserving these in case bigger party's turned up, we were a party of five and next to us was a table set for eight that wasn't used the whole time we were there. Drink prices extortionately high. (Perhaps that's why the long wait to be seated, so you buy more over priced drinks?) we asked for a high chair which arrived and was filthy and damaged. The food was ok, nothing special, and well over priced!

Great for taking children too - staff are pleasant and always willing to please. A good place for meeting friends - I have been many many times and never disappointed - food always consistently good.

Arrived 4.30pm on Sunday 22nd March 2015, we were informed there was an hour wait. That didn't matter as we had driven for 45 minutes to get there. We gave our name and went and bought a drink from the bar. A pint and a coke cost over £6.00, a little expensive I thought. After an hour we were called to our table and we were served promptly by a friendly , professional young waiter. When the food arrived it was well worth the wait. It was cooked to perfection. It tasted perfect and I devoured every mouthful. The dessert was also delicious. This is somewhere I would recommend and it was my third visit. The quality of the food has been the same each visit.

the Tavern offers quality food at budget prices, we have never had a bad meal there yet, the food is always cooked well and served hot, the service is excellent, and the atmosphere is always good, you can sit in the lounge are in large comfy chairs in front of big fires with coffer or alcoholic drinks and chat away. We have never been there and found it empty, they must be doing something right. For a midweek meal or weekend treat, you can't go wrong, you can sit out side in a small patio area, there is a large car park and beautiful views, it is a very pleasant place to eat out, they will even decorate your table with balloons etc for that special occasion. They offer smaller dishes for those with a smaller appetite.

We are regular and good customers, arrived this evening at 9pm, and decided to try the bar menu. "Enjoy until 9.15pm" trumpets the menu board. We went to order, but were told "Nah! don't do this after 9.00" by the grump behind the bar. When it was pointed out to him that the menu says 9.15pm, he responded that they stop serving at 9 on a Sunday, which it does NOT say on the menu board!. We have found over recent months that the overall quality and quantity of the meals there has gone very much downhill, so intend to take our custom elsewhere from now on.

I took my Mum here on Tuesday 17th March at 6.02. After deciding what we wanted we proceeded to order, however I was told I could not order a light bite as it was after six, fair enough, but senior citizens can! As my mum had ordered a full meal I said serve the light bite to my Mum and the main meal to me, then we would swap. No, I was told, we cannot do that as we know who has ordered which meal! Then the waitress went to ask her manager if she could do this. Low and behold I was informed they would do this just this once, but not next time, as if they were doing me a favour!! I replied there will not be a next time, this time isn't going to happen either!! We walked out and went elsewhere. Stupid rule, wont be going there again.

We went to this restaurant on Mothers Day and did not have not reserve a table but it is a big place. A jug of water with ice was on the table and we were given a fixed menu as it was Mother's Day. The food is absolutely delicious and I'm a fussy eater. It was presented well and was hot. It was very tasty. This is my new favourite restaurant in the whole of Bolton! The staff are very attentive and the rstaurant is very nicely decorated. The toilets are very clean as well. Love love love this restaurant. 10 out of 10.

Arrived at 6 and my daughter in law booked a table for 4; from what seemed like ages we were called via tannoy to our table. It was quite busy and we chose quite quickly but our meals took a very long time! 2 chicken wrapped in pancetta on a bed of bubble n squak with a few vegetables off the specials board and 2 meatballs n pasta with cheese garlic bread also off the specials board.we were all ravenous by the time our meals arrived and I was disappointed by the portion size of my chicken for the price £15! Overall was lovely food, need to be quicker (for diabetics!) and be a bit cheaper if portion sizes are small

I have been going to the tavern for over twenty years and it holds great memories for me [taking my mother and the kids]. I went in March 2015 and the meal is still first rate, the atmosphere is excellent and the staff superb, well with twenty to thirty pounds for two, keep it up Tavern on the Hill.

We went on a Saturday night with my husband, son, daughter and my sons fiancée, at 7pm, we had to wait about 10 minutes before being called to our table. My son and his fiancée live in Didsbury and they eat out also in Manchester so they were always going to compare the tavern with all the Didsbury/Manchester restaurants. To everyone's surprise the food was amazing and a good variety and we all would definitely return in the future. We stayed for drinks afterwards and found it very relaxing and comfortable in the bar area.

Today I treated my mum and dad for lunch for my mums birthday! We had afternoon tea which was gorgeous and well worth the money, and we had a unexpected savoury treat as part of the afternoon tea, which was a mini shepherds pie, it was so tasty! My dad had a light meal of gammon steak and chips, which again was good value for money, and very tasty. The staff are very attentive and friendly and it really makes your visit an enjoyable one! I suggest booking as it is very popular. Will definitely be going back and having afternoon tea as its a nice trest for celebrations.

We just stopped for lunch .As we were in the area.Quite busy, but clientele mainly over the age of 60 on a Friday afternoon .Had to find a table. Then I had to go to the bar to order and bring our drinks back .Our meals were then brought to the table. If you wanted a drink or dessert etc you had to go yourself.Prices above average for just average food.Having to listen to conversations about IBS and toilet problems etc did not add to the ambience!!!Will not drop in again. Sorry

Called when passing, Saturday 5pm. Got a table straight away. Food & service were both good but we both had pie & chips ( which were only oven chips ) & both meals were £10.95 each which I thought was a bit on the expensive side. It was ok but wouldnt go out of my way to go again.

We have been several times during the day and it's been really good and would recommend. Tonight it was my wife's treat, first courses really nice but as our plates were being cleared the main course turned up which looked like it had been microwaved, pastry on the Pie and Yorkshire pud horrible. Will not be going in the evening again.

I have eaten here before but this recent visit was a lot more pleasurable. Myself and work colleagues organized a night here to celebrate one of our colleagues getting a new post. A table for 20 was booked. One disappointment, a huge round table was offered, with a separate one for four at the back of it, this split our party up a bit. I could not fault the staff and excellent service though. All our starters and meals arrived quite quickly. Water with ice, was available without having to ask. Special boards were brought to our table. Later a dessert board was brought, but we weren't told about specials. The foods were pretty average fayre, but well presented. We were then offered coffee or teas. Settling the bill was painless as we were given the option of paying separately at the till, this is when we saw the special desserts on offer!, ah well,,,saved a few calories I suppose!

Had a meal there with some friends last night. The car park is large and the first impressions are good. No booking on a Saturday night for some obscure reason. We were told we would have to wait for 30 minutes. After 50 minutes, we enquired about our table and were told that they had tannoyed us and we failed to answer. In that time, we heard one announcement for a table for two..Obviously all four of us had gone deaf and didn't hear the tannoy, or any reminder. Ironically another party, next to us, were told exactly the same. It would appear that almost all of the customers have hearing problems. The service was very good, with friendly, efficient staff. We were provided with a jug of water, which still had the taste of the cleaning fluid - not good.Three of us thought the food was excellent - I didn't. I had what appeared to be the vegetarian version of chilli con carne, as I could hardly detect any meat. I have never, ever seen a chilli containing so little meat, although the portion was tiny. The chips were large and tasteless. The desserts were excellent, with plenty of choice.Prices for drinks were about 25% dearer than we normally pay and the food prices are high, considering what they are.Overall, I would not return. There are better places, with better food and lower prices. There would be no reason to go again.

Had an awful meal there last night. I wonder if they struggle if you vary from basic pie and chips etc. I ordered sea bass with Mediterranean vegetables and roast potatoes. Two tiny sea bass fillets arrived on the top of a mush of vegetables in a tin of tomatoes! I saw what I thought must be a few very small diced potatoes, but they were soaked in the juice from the tin of tomatoes so it was hard to tell. I did speak to the waitress and they brought out some extra diced roast potatoes, but the whole dish tasted of the tin of tomatoes and was largely inedible. This morning I decided to email the manager before posting a review, but there is no email address to make contact! My husband ordered the mixed grill, the waiter came over and said they'd run out of pork so did he want an extra sausage or gammon? They said he couldn't have extra steak! As it was their mistake surely this should have been an option, when it arrived it looked like a large portion of gammon, egg and chips. When we arrived we did find it strange that the car park was nearly empty on a Sunday evening, now we know why!

Spare of the moment drop in tea. The restaurant is done out very nicely, the food however was over priced for average pub type food and I also agree the loud speaker was very annoying an didn't think much to the paper placemats. Seemed a little confused great effort in many ways but let down in others! Food was good but nothing to go over board about.

Popped in here for lunch pre-Christmas. Very busy but only a short wait for a table. Thought the food was a little pricey at first. Couldn't decide what to have until Mrs D spotted the Lancashire Burger. This was excellent as were the chunky chips and well worth the extra expense over more pub-grub chains.Copper Dragon cask ale-only managed one as I didn't want to fall foul of GMP's festive finest!Overall this is a step up from pub grub & is reflected in the prices.
