Spent 5 nights here on business. Room very comfortable with no noise from the downstairs bar. Parking at the rear, road parking available for a charge or free after 6. Good menu choice for dinner & breakfast. Enjoyed watching the rowers on the river whilst enjoying breakfast by the fire. Highly recommend.

The worst place I’ve ever been. It’s a lovely view and we only had drinks which was okay but the attitudes of the staff are the worst from any establishment I’ve ever been to around the world. This was without cause, I don’t mean just can’t be bothered but aggressive. Decided not to eat because what effort can they be putting in. Only thing I can think of is they are only trying to a run a business on paper. Very odd.

We had a brilliant time at The Embankment in Bedford. The pub has a warm, welcoming feel with a buzzing atmosphere and lovely riverside views. The food was absolutely top-notch – hearty, full of flavour, and beautifully presented. We especially enjoyed the seasonal specials and the perfectly poured pints! A big shoutout to Katie, who was fantastic from start to finish – friendly, knowledgeable, and made us feel so well looked after. It’s rare to get service that genuinely enhances your visit, but Katie nailed it. The mix of great food, cosy pub vibes, and spot-on service made for a really memorable evening. Whether you're popping in for a drink or sitting down for a proper meal, The Embankment gets it right. We’ll definitely be back!

The staff were very polite and accommodating. Quick service and great customer service. We were a large group of 10 and they were very helpful at arranging seating for us. They also offered us complimentary jugs of water with ice and lemon. We had a mixture of cold and hot drinks at reasonable prices. The seating area outside was very clean and staff were quick to tidy up after customers left. The only downside was at the time we were sitting outside a delivery van for The Embankment was parked obscuring the view out onto the river scenery. Overall we would visit again and would recommend this place to others.

Dartmouth food prices are steep. 3 meals bought- 2xs creeder chicken, which were good but 1xs Ragu, which can only be described as a child's portion. Hardly any meat in it- the bowl filled with pasta was about 4 inches in diameter- clearly noy homemade pasta- a la carte menu.. Service charge also added to the bill. Staff friendly enough but a long wait for drinks. Also no disabled toilet. Access for disabled was via a portable ramp, so grateful for that. Ate on 19/04/25. Also too many dogs in there at once.

Popped in for a quick drink and maybe a lite bite and to enjoy the views. We were shown to a table and before we could even order, over heard what I assume was the front of house manager saying that he needed the table back in 45 mins and that he could not serve us food and drink in time, we felt VERY unwelcome and I would have walked out, but my other guests convinced me to stay. We had a drink and some chips and sardines (which was nice and quick) and left in 30 mins and won’t be going back. Not sure this guy is in the right job??

Popped in for a quick drink and possibly a light nibble before supper. The maître d' at the door greeted us warmly and showed us to a table. When we ordered with the waiter, a boorish and overbearing gentleman interrupted, stating that he needed the table back within an hour and that if we ordered food, he wouldn't be able to turn the table around in time (for some perspective, we ordered some sardines and a plate of chips to enjoy with our drinks—hardly a three-course meal). My other guests were most affronted by his rude and obnoxious tone; however, I stood firm, and we enjoyed our drinks and food and left within half an hour. I witnessed, while we had our drinks (forgive the retro reference), what could be a Basil Fawlty-style school of hospitality. While amusing, I found the Greek chap had zero natural warmth or the delivery required for a customer-facing role. Whoever runs this establishment needs to put Basil back in his box and away from the customers. The sardines, drinks, and other serving staff were all to a good standard.

We arrived late morning, planning to have a drink while we decided whether to stay for lunch. The place has great views of the river and seemed well run, but when we noticed that the service seemed rather slow we decided to order food as soon as our drinks arrived, and were given menus. I asked a passing waiter for the wifi password, and he mumbled something about going to get the details for me. I saw him then go to the kitchen and start tending to food orders, and he never came back. The waiter who had given us the menus also never came back to take our order, but was taking orders from people who had come in after us - so once we had finished our drinks, we left.

My husband and I had the most wonderful dinner here on 28/2/25. We had a lovely window seat in the corner by the window as the sun set. We were warmly greeted and our drinks were quickly brought out while we perused the menu. I have to say that each and every mouthful of what we ordered was delicious! Starter - warm focaccia with oil and balsamic vinegar. This was lovely toasted and the balsamic vinegar had been boiled down to release the sweetness and make it thicker. Main - husband had fish and chips, and I had a Caesar salad and frites. The batter on the fish was light and crispy - not at all soggy. The salad was fresh and just the right amount of dressing. The matchstick frites were perfect and so moreish! Dessert - husband had crème brûlée and I had the 3 warm madeleines with crème anglaise. Both desserts were incredible, but seriously those madeleines were out of this world. They were warm from the oven and the crème anglaise was cold. Talk about a match made in heaven. I will be dreaming about these for the rest of my life. Coffee and hot chocolate to finish. Service was perfect; our server was friendly, funny and not the kind that keeps bothering you to check everything is ok. The building is a charming old station and the ambience was just like a French bistro. I cannot recommend this place enough. It was very reasonably priced too. We will definitely be coming back next time we are in the area. Seriously, those madeleines…….❤️

I have lived in Bedford 6 years and this used to be my very favorite restaurant for Sunday Roast, I always have been there with friends and family in big tables of 6 to 8 people. Unfortunately our last 2 experiences there have been very bad. I went with friends (table of 6) in December 2024 and last weekend - Feb25 (table of 8). Our experience both times have been very bad. The price is quite expensive compared with our places in Bedford and I never mind to paid it in the past as quality and service was fantastic, however the quality and service in the last months is quite bad. OUr plates were very smalls, they forgot yorkshire pudding in 1 plate, forgot pork cracking in all the plates, did not have horseradish sauce, just 2 potatoes and 2 carrots, meat was reheated, etc.... We are extremely dissapointed with quality and unfortunately we won't come back again in the future, I will change to different place like Pen&Cob, Herd or any other pub. The previous time in Dec24 the experience was exactly the same, even worst as we had issues also with the table booked, quite disappointing. I am not sure what has happened with this lovely place but regular people like us can see the detrimental drop in the quality of this restaurant.

We came as a family of 4 for Sunday lunch on what turned out to be a busy day. It appears that there had earlier been a running event nearby which resulted in a number of walk-in diners, resulting in no vegetarian roast option and other items missing from the menu. The service was very slow with the food arriving after approx. 1 hour and a quarter. Admittedly, we were given complimentary bread and olives, but they had long gone by the time the meals arrived. The meals when they were came were acceptable at best. It seems the restaurant catered more for walk in diners than the bookings that they had. Well done to the waiting staff who were pleasant and friendly, under the circumstances of a busy service.

We always say with this place, its hit and miss. It was miss again this time. Here's what I don't understand. Portions: Some are huge - chicken, some are tiny, almost starters ie fish. All are served with a tiny egg cup of rocket, and on this occasion no vegetables were available! Steak was overcooked. Puddings, tiny! Wait - long! had to remind about drinks. Pie and Mash, well it was pie with a spoon of mash. Such small things to get right. Snappier drinks service, equal portion sizes, and better portions of potatoes and veg. Oh and the crispy potatoes, werent as they were covered in soy sauce. Also the constant use of the word by some staff of "darling" and "my lovelies" is not ingratiating its irritating.

Went out for a family boxing day morning walk and stopped by for a coffee at the Embankment hotel. We were told there was a 20 min wait for hot drinks which i think is bad for a place like this. There is a big coffee machine which can pump out coffee's in no time at all. What a ridiculous excuse. It was not packed like it could have been so we decided to have cold drinks. When we went to pay with cash we were then told they had no change so could not take cash. COME ON ,stop making excuses and shake your staff up,you know it's a busy time of year and that change needs to be stocked in the petty cash. I put this down to simply bad management and nothing else. We'll go elsewhere next time, there are plentyof alternatives. Please do not reply with BORING excuses.

The last two times have been a big disappointment with regard to both food and service. Today my partner chose Chicken schnitzel and I the Fish and chips. The waitress brought the chicken schnitzel to our table - the breadcrumb coating was golden brown but a very dark brown and extremely oily and when my partner cut into it there was a large portion without any chicken in it whatsoever. What surprised me just as much as the poor quality of cooking was the fact that the waitress brought it to our table! My fish and chips was okay - however the batter was rather anaemic looking and the portion of garden peas was small. When we first visited The Embankment in June we considered the food to be of good quality, if slightly expensive - now our opinion is much more negative. The decor is now looking rather shabby too. I sat at a corner table on a padded cushion that kept sliding off the bonquette - very irritating! We’re now looking for a new regular/local pub restaurant.

Would not allow us to split the bill and added a service charge of 10%, without mentioning it and letting us remove it. Fabulous food! Fabulous service! Fabulous views! I had the catch of the day on both my visits. The staff were friendly, warm and helpful. I'm not used to eating fish straight from the sea but bravely gave it a go - so glad I did! Absolutely delicious! Perfect with a crisp white wine and overlooking the bobbing boats on the Estuary - and was lovely as dusk came with the twinkling lights emerging as you melted in the atmosphere. Other restaurants are set back across the road so if you want to treat yourself or someone special then the vista over the water is a rare treat worth the extra. I was delightfully seduced by the classic old style music that further transcended the dining experience. All my Newbie to fresh fish questions answered fully and food arrived in good time which was cooked perfectly and balanced superbly with delicate complimentary flavours. Can't wait to go back. Keep up the good work!

This was our third visit to the Embankment hotel and pub among many visits to our "hometown" of Bedford in the UK throughout our lives. Brenda was born in Bedford and we met and married here many years ago. Our son booked our first visit here in 2018 for an anniversary. We loved it right away and will only stay there now. Our August visit was just to relax in the hotel. We didn’t venture away at all, other than walks along the river and trips to the town. I can truly say that the embankment is ideal for an extended vacation; and it is also perfect for a working holiday. The food and service are first class. We will be back when we can. The website is very good in describing vivid detail of the embankment features. It seems to be busy morning to closing, but the staff never loses their smiles; and it is dog friendly! Many thanks especially to Michelle, the hotel manager for our memorable stay

We’ve always loved coming to dine here but this is the first time I’ve felt compelled to leave a review as we held our wedding at this hotel this weekend which involved a lot of pre planning aswell as use of the hotel and restaurant for both ourselves and some of our guests. Rachel was our main point of contact from the start and I simply cannot praise her enough for her professionalism, a year in the planning she was so accommodating and helped to coordinate our ceremony, our meal and many room changes as our needs changed throughout the day. The food was perfect, all our guests loved the banquet style we chose, which also took some adapting of the standard menu and was again never a problem. The staff here are genuinely passionate and so hard working and made us and our guests feel so special throughout the whole process. We could mention everyone but unfortunately we don’t have everyone’s names! But Tom, Steph and Natalie have to be mentioned. A small Fish and chips cost £10, an exceptionally small portion and the chips are frozen product not fresh made, (I am a professional chef I know the difference). The fish appeared fresh though and tasted fine but seems very poor to charge so much for so little and not even proper chip! Had we not walked someway away to eat them we would have gone back for a refund.

Chaotic, disappointing and don’t celebrate anything there. When I booked we said it was a celebration and when we arrived they checked. But nothing happened, it was completely ignored. Our drinks arrived at different times and i mean like 10 mins apart. When the main course arrived the pie was lovely but the potatoes were cold, one of us asked for more gravel to pour over to warm it up the other wanted it hot. So the waiter came with a bowl and scooped up her potato and took microwaved it and plonked it back on her plate !!! I kid you not - Faulty Towers. We had ordered extra vegetables which they forgot about so we got raw cold cabbage. Desert - disaster continued. One person got her tea and she drank that - 15 mins later her cheese arrived - they should have been together. They forgot about the rest of the deserts until we complained and then when they gave us the ice cream it had melted in the bottom of the glass. Oh yes the birthdays - well they had no interest in them at all, completely ignored. Thanks guys - get yourself organised. You were totally disorganised.

Do not come here if you want good service. Stopped to get a cider on the river. The manager was busy micromanaging his staff, and subsequently, nothing was getting done. Got my pint after a 5 minute wait, with me being the only person at the bar. Was then told I had to sit outside, despite their being a dozen or more spare tables.

Any establishment who has fallen in to the misguided belief that "trendy" businesses don't need cash customers need to desperately rethink their future. Unbelievable they can turn cash carrying customers away

Had a wonderful time at The Embankment. Service was excellent… thankfully, our waitress ? Ruth, told us the dessert on the specials board was Baked Alaska! All 4 of us had it, with a raspberry jui. Absolutely delicious! Dinner was great too, between us we had the beef & Ale pie, chicken schnitzel and Haddock & chips. We were sat in a lovely booth to the side rear of the bar, it was private and we were wonderfully attended by Ruth. Thank you for a memorable meal, in an amazing building.

I went here with some family members and had a really enjoyable time. The service was fab and the food delicious. We shared the camembert with balsamic onions (I could eat a starter of just the onions!) and I had the beef cheek, which was very tender and delicious. Other members had the lamb, hamburger and fish and chips and loved it. All the food was cooked to perfection and the staff were very friendly. They even had dog treats for our pup! The view can’t be beat either. It doesn’t matter where you sit because the views out over the harbour can be seen and enjoyed. I highly recommend.

Nice meal to be fair and the muscle starter was fab. However plaice came in 2 small pieces and then you had to.pay for extras. Service is hit and miss and I expected more to be fair...not leaning over you to take plates and place cutlery. Also need to check with you before offering you certain wines in terms of.pricing. Will.consider a return in the future

Unique bistro that looks like an old railway station on the outside but feels quite French on the inside.

We ate at The Embankment as a group of 8 over the weekend, to celebrate an achievement, and really loved it. Fabulous evening views of the river and lights, really lovely food, great service (they couldn’t have been more attentive or accommodating) and friendly. So impressed we went back for coffee the next day. Ignore the negative reviews… we highly recommend!

We have been here twice. The outside hasn't changed much in 25 years and there has been a succession of cafe type places in this building. It has recently had a change of ownership and is now owned by the company that operate The Angel (the very upmarket and expensive restaurant opposite). The inside is now very tasteful and there is a menu with something for everyone. The cooking is first class, but you can still get a pint with your meal (nice touch). Very much a brasserie. The only reason it dropped a star for atmosphere is that it tends to be rather empty in the Winter evenings. Actually a big plus if you fancy a quiet meal!

Went to Bedford for my Friend's 50th .stayed at the Embankment for a night but ended up staying an extra nite because the staff are friendly and attentive. The breakfast was so good . . I like the architecture and deco in not really my style /thing but liked it . All the staff were good to us but thanks to Katie for. I reco this place and will definitely be staying there again.

Great location, lovely food and fantastic staff. One of our group had a medical emergency (thankfully all OK in the end) and the staff were dealt with it so well - totally calm and professional. I can't praise them highly enough.

5 stars all the way, booked a table for Mothers day unfortunately I couldn't make it as I was working 😢. But my wife & children was looked after so well by all the staff, the food was amazing ( even our fussy 6 year old son cleared his plate! ), staff lit a candle for my wife, wished her happy mothers day & gave her a small bottle of gin! The only downside was the tip our 20 year old gave the staff i gave him a speaking to when they got back! Thank you so much to the staff at The Embankment you made my wife's day even more special, definitely will be back, hopefully with myself :) & I'll give you guys a proper tip next time 😆

Came in April and the food and service were excellent. Tonight alas, quite the opposite. Last time, I was lucky to get a beef shin starter, which was incredibly good. Tonight, it was off. If you can’t consistently provide it, why have it on the menu? My wife’s squid starter was tiny, apparently tasteless and very poor value. The two double burgers ordered were seriously overcooked. My scampi was ok at best. Would have had the Thai Green Curry but that was also off. Water for the table was requested but never arrived. Service was very poor throughout. Had to go to the bar to find the waitress to request the bill then had to go back again after a longish wait to ask to pay. All round a huge disappointment, especially as we’d been bigging the place up to our companions. And £6.40 for a pint of lager - really?! Not inclined to return and risk a repeat experience, which is a shame.
