To be honest quite shocking, £15 for a chicken burger, which was like a flat patty from farm foods, should have had salad, 1 slice of tomato, cucumber, the smallest bit of onion and a few shreds of lettuce. Would have got a 1 star but the other meals were OK.

The food in this pub/restaurant is extortionatelty overpriced and as unauthentic as it gets!! We were so hungry on a trip back from Cambridge for the day and ordered 6 dishes.. the Thai lady/chef kindly cooked us a papaya salad which was not on the menu… this was the one and only authentic quite tasty dish! The two main dishes were watery and tasted much the same as one another though completely different orders! The Tom yum soup was not fresh and was made with powder… a side order of vegetables in oyster sauce comprised of broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and some English mushroom, ( at £7.95 one would hope they could have stretched to some oyster or shiitake mushrooms 🤦‍♂️) These vegetables were not seasoned correctly at all and just tasted as though they had been fried in watered down oyster sauce. The starter was a concoction of vegetable and processed chicken deep fried in too much heavy oily batter. When asked by the waitress if everything was ok and i replied “to be honest, average at best “ she simply replied “ I am sorry to hear that” and proceeded to take payment!.. no questions as to why she had two very unsatisfied customers!!!! My wife and I have eaten in many Thai restaurants across the Uk and this is the worst experience bar none! I never write food reviews but on this instance felt compelled to warn others.

We are staying at Badwell Ash holiday lodges over Christmas and noticed this pub whilst out walking yesterday, so decided to try their Thai food tonight. What a fantastic meal! The set starter for two was delicious and not scrimpy like some restaurants! My red curry was the best I've had and the coconut rice was scrumptious. I wish this restaurant was in my home town in Notts. My husband and me didn't stop talking about it all the way back to the lodge! The waitress service was also first class.

We have had quite a few takeaways and also eaten here quite a few times this year. The food is excellent, cooked by Jimmy’s wife Nan and is lovely and fresh. Good size menu too. Good size car park. We usually go midweek lunchtime and it’s quiet but I believe the end of the week gets very busy. Reviews complain about rude landlord, ok Jimmy is a bit Basil Fawlty but he really is ok and does have a sense of humour. You just have to accept him as Jimmy ! I’ve only found him helpful.

After reading the reviews I was a bit dubious about what to expect but all I can say is what an amazing meal and dinning experience. We have eaten Tai food at many top restaurants around the country and in my opinion this rates as one of the best. The service was excellent and I must say that our waitress Tamsin was a real credit to the restaurant, nothing was to much trouble. Jimmy who It turns out is the owner was such a character he really made our night, he really is a star. I enquired as to who the chef was and her name is Nan, absolutely amazing food. I went with my good friend to celebrate his birthday and had a terrific time. The landlord Jimmy was very welcoming and the food was exquisite. We had a mixed starter which was fired zucchini, prawns, spring rolls, chicken satay and four dips. I had a delicious prawn curry with coconut rice. I can sincerely say it was one of the nicest curries I have ever eaten. My friend has rib eye stake and noodles. I tasted his steak and it was flavoursome and tender. I see from previous reviews the landlord has a stern reputation. The restaurant is also a bar and his focus is on his diners. He wants to ensure a pleasant experience for them and doesn’t want rowdy people, or the uncouth, spoiling it. He has zero tolerance for swearing, and in a world where anything seems to go, and people are frightened to challenge anyone, it’s refreshing to see standards being set.A great meal and will certainly go again.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

Coronavirus safety: The landlord seems to be taking things fairly seriously, with notices displayed limiting the number of customers inside the pub to 25 and hand gel freely available on the bar. There's also a 'one out in / one in rule' in place for the loos, although the absence of vacant/engaged indicators (as are being used by some of the big chain pubs) makes it hard to know if there's anyone just about to come out just as you're trying to go in. There are no plastic screens at the bar (as seem to be common in chain pubs) and 'test and trace' registrations are achieved by using a visitor's book that's passed from hand to hand between customers, rather than by using separate forms. I was also surprised that, rather than using photocopied disposable menus, the landlord still hands laminated menus out to customers.Ambience, etc: The pub appears to be well laid-out, with separate areas for dining and for playing pool, etc. However, as it was a sunny day, we opted to take our lunch in the pleasant garden, which has small children's play area and a very friendly cat.Service, etc: We didn't encounter any of the landlord's legendary rudeness. (See countless other reviews here!). We actually found him to be polite and courteous. (However my friend did comment that she "didn't like the way he spoke to the chef" and that "a properly-trained waiter would never clear the plates from in front of two diners while a third diner at the same table was still eating"). We had quite a long wait for our food, despite being the only people who'd placed food orders at that time, leaving us wondering how well the kitchen would be able to cope at busier times.Prices: The Fox's prices are definitely at the upper end of what one might expect to pay for a Thai lunch, with a main course (including rice) typically costing around £15. That's over double what some Thai restaurants charge for lunch (e.g. Siam Thai in Braintree), a fiver or so more than some other East Anglian Thai pubs charge (e.g. The Vine in Norwich) and even a pound or two more than one might pay in a Thai pub in central London (e.g. The Lemon Tree in Covent Garden). Food: Everything was clearly freshly-prepared to order, using good quality ingredients. A friend and I each had (different) prawn dishes, where there were loads of king prawns (rather than just the handful that some places serve one with) but we both found that the sauces used were very bland, lacking the 'zing' that Thai food often has (and which was promised by the menu). Our other friend though, who'd opted for a yellow curry, seemed fully satisfied with his dish.Summary: While there was nothing to seriously complain about (and, indeed, we generally enjoyed our experience), we still felt that we won't be rushing back to The Fox at any time in the near future.

The range of thai food available is good and all dishes we had were well prepared and flavoured. The thai dumplings on the specials menu were especially good, and the tom yum soup was indeed yum! Don't be fooled however into thinking that, just because this is based in a pub, it is a cheap night out. My wife and I incurred a bill of £92.10 for 2 starters, 2 soups and 2 main courses with a coconut rice and pad thai. This included 2 lime and sodas and 2 double gin and tonics. We discovered afterwards that the G&Ts were just under £12 each. The fact that the restaurant level bill is within a pretty noisy pub does make you question whether your money would be better spent in better surroundings for equally good food. For us, the answer to the question is "yes".

The food was amazing, the waiting staff and the owner Jimmy continuously checked our table and others to check everything was alright and to check drinks etc. This is my first review because I’ve set up an account to purely debunk some of the more harsh reviews on here specifically about the host. I was passing this pub today and noticed the 'Lavazza served here' sign outside so stopped to buy a coffee. I went into the loo and when I came out realised I had left my wallet in the car - I tried to open the door out of the pub to retrieve my wallet from the car but found the door wouldn't open. The manager/owner called out to me 'where are you going?' - he had locked me in!! He then started having a go at for me for just coming in to use the loo and insisted I pay (apparently locking young women on their own inside your pub is the acceptable way to deal with this!) - I said I had actually come in to buy a coffee at which he said 'we're not serving food and you should have checked first' - I protested that the (small, portable) sign displayed prominently outside said 'Lavazza served here' and therefore it was reasonable to assume that was the case! (and when I last checked coffee was a drink, not food...). He carried on being very rude to me and insisting I pay and that I should have checked first... until he finally relented and told me how I could exit the building out the back. I left shaking and very angry. Completely unacceptable, rude and threatening behaviour.

Drinks are ordered at the bar which is fine, it just took quite a while to get the manager to come and take our food order and he disappeared half way through because there was obviously a problem with another order. He does have quite a brusque manner but I wouldn't describe it as rude. I ordered a green Thai curry which he advised me was hotter but it was fine for me with lots of nice flavours going on. The duck pancake starter was a bit missable - taste was good but not much duck in it and also not shredded which would have made it better. We had to go to the bar to get our bill but there was a very large and incredibly noisy party who were obviously taking up most of the staff's time. Bill was reasonable.

on Friday, 4 August 2017 my husband and I went in to Green King pub in Elmswell called The Dog. It was our first visit to the pub restaurant-we went there to get some takeaway Thai food for us and our family as we were having a birthday meal for 6.As we ordered over the phone the manager said that the pudding banana fritters were not available so he was going to take £5 off per person because we weren't having pudding.when we get there to collect our food my husband then confirms it's £5 per person off and the manager says "no I said £5 per meal" ( there were 6 meals)" So my husband says again "yes per person" and then the manager realised what he was saying and said "no I mean £5 off per two meal set" at which my husband then says "that's not what was said over over the phone" and then the manager said "if you talk to me like that I won't serve you!" which was quite rude in all honesty considering it was his mistake and we werent arguing,we were just stating what he had agreed to do.then he walks off while shouting " talk to me like that I'm not giving you any service".im shocked that he would speak to customers like that and I found this highly offensive and embarrassing also the customer sat beside us at the bar looked at us and said "you do not talk like that to customers" .when he came back I felt quite offended the way my husband was treated so I said to the manager "I feel the way you spoke was very rude and unfair towards my husband" and he says "I wasn't rude rude I just said what I had to say" to which I said "well it was rude !I feel its very disrespectful to speak to anyone like that, especially since we were not being argumentative or rude to you. I don't really want to come back here any more and if you don't apologise I am going to have to give you bad feedback on TripAdvisor" to which his reply was "I don't care about customer service do what you want." Now I really don't like making complaint but I thought that this was a highly unprofessional and to be honest very offensive behaviour towards us considering we have never visited the pub before and I thought it would be a great idea to try the pub. Obviously we will never eat there again because of the management service towards us for no reason. It is a shame because the food was in fact lovely ,but the service was horrific and absolutely offensive - more so because it was the manager that spoke to us like that! If a customer was being completely unreasonable (which was not our case) I would never respond in such way!I apologise for the long message but I can't express how disapointed and upset I am at this!

Jimmy the Landlord of The Fox is excellent. I have always found him welcoming and generous with a ironic sense of humour. The standard of food is always high and reasonably pricedIgnore the idiots who have their own agenda and use you local when you can.As they say use it or loose it

This was my second visit to this pub with a group of friends. If you can get past the fact that the landlord/front of house meet-and-greet is in the wrong job i.e. surly and unfriendly and a possible rival to Basil Fawlty, then the food isn't bad. I had the Pad Thai Sunanta and it was very tasty.

Called in at the Fox early evening on a Saturday as we planned to get a takeaway and have a couple of drinks while it was made. Very friendly staff and the landlord also welcomed us personally. We sat and had a drink while we chose our food. Then ordered with another round of drinks. Food came quickly and we drank up and headed home. There was so much food that it actually did us 2 meals! Food was very good quality and very tasty. Would highly recommend and next time we will go for a meal in!

Absolutely scrumpy food! I didn't know what to expect having read the reviews which weren't that great but we live in the village so thought we would have a try. The decor in the restaurant is very tasteful. The host, Jimmy, was very attentive and helpful with the menu.I chose Thai red curry with prawns and coconut rice. It was so tasty, creamy and still had a punch. It was hubby's birthday so we were there with my sister and brother in law. Starter main and dessert were all delicious. Suffice to say we will be visiting more often. Highly recommended .

We are a group of walkers(9) that regularly do village walks on Thursdays and like to finish off with a lunchtime pub meal and drinks. As we decided to do a walk from Elmswell and knowing that the Fox is a Thai pub I called at The Fox to speak to the landlord to find out whether they had an English menu as well as Thai one. I was met by Jimmy and as soon as I mention an English menu he moaned about English food, English pub , English people. At first I thought he was joking but as soon as I mentioned walkers coming in for lunch he began ranting about walkers not drinking. That he didn't make any money from walkers and that they don't spend enough. At this stage I put down the menu on the counter, told him that he was very rude and we would not be giving him our custom. To this he said" Good we don't like walkers they are not welcome here". I will never go back to this pub ever and would not recommend it to anyone.

Tried this one a few months ago, after a recommendation from a tradesman. Now we are there a couple of times a month, either to eat in or take-away.Thai is our food of choice, and this is a God-send! Don't understand the negative comments on here, especially about Jimmy - not sure what some people expect. This is a pub, after all - Jimmy is a good landlord and, as we have got to know him, we are now made to feel very welcome. Give them a break!! It's superb, reasonably priced food, with the advantage of really, quality beer and drinks too!

Visited with friends during a well behaved pub crawl through Suffolk. Pub was fairly welcoming, even if locals behaved in the usual way to 'strangers'!! Barman started off friendly, but was then nowhere to be seen when we fancied a 'quick half' before the train. Perhaps our lads banter during pool, was too noisy for the subdued atmosphere!

Stopped for a pint on my way back to Bury St Edmunds. Nice Greene King pub and I was surprised when I saw a lady ordering Thai food so I stayed for dinner. Tried the tom kha seafood soup which was excellent. Also tried the pad khing chicken which was ok. I have had better but also had worse. Certainly good value for pub food.

When I've asked landord that I've ordered pork he has said that this is a pork. Asked for still water and got sparkling. You never get what you've ordered. I WILL NEVER VISIT AGAIN. Tried The Fox in Elswell today as we are moving into the village. We were pretty impressed! We were seated quickly in a nicely presented dining area. Very clean, bright and airy. The place was quiet during our visit and may be during busy times would feel a little confined. Plenty to choose from on the menu both Thai and typical pub grub. The food arrived promptly and was delicious. Very authentic. Would definitely try again.

I have been to the Fox on several occasions recently for a meal and the landlord (Jimmy) has always made me feel welcome, the beer was good and my Thai food was very very nice and not too expensive, The decor in the restaurant has an up market feel about it and the overall experience was very pleasant, It is more busy at weekends and a phone call to book a table would be a good idea but during the week there is mostly plenty of room .

We visited this pub on Thursday 14/7/16, we were standing at the bar waiting to be served when the licensee asked me if we were waiting for a table to which i replied that we were just waiting to buy a drink. He then went behind the bar and proceeded to serve a group of people who had just walked in to the pub, knowing that i was waiting to be served. we left without having a drink and pointing out that he was a total ignoramus.

Went here twice, once for evening drinks and once for a meal. The first time the drinks were fine, the landlord was amiable and we had a good few games of pool. A few days later we went for a meal which was less good. The menu said the vegetarian burger came with halloumi but instead we were given burger cheese. When asked the landlord said they don't do halloumi at all... The burger was also dry and tough to eat. Two of the group had a set menu that came with coffee and mints for dessert and these never arrived. The landlord was also rather stand-offish throughout. Despite this, the thai food was very nice, especially the green curry. Portions were also a good size and not too expensive.

Called in at lunchtime, the pub was quiet but very well presented inside. A lot of time and effort had obviously gone into the design.Tried the Thai starters which we found to be expensive for the size of portions. I had the starter which had 'crispy duck' in the description and ordered a double portion as I was hungry. For £10.90 I had 4 mini pasty like servings which seemed to have a 'crispy duck ' type of paste/mince inside. Not what I was expecting, and did not fill me up. My wife had a prawn dumpling starter which was reasonable. Along with a coffee, a soft drink and a bowl of chips the total bill came to just over £27. This seems to be a nice pub but what we had proved to be poor value for money and we would not return.

And by reading the reviews it appears he is not the only person to think that this Man is RUDE!!!!!!. The Fish 7 Chips he had from the chipshop were far better.

Ate here 2 weeks ago, and other members of our family had a meal more recently..... we all had a similar experience....... main courses outstanding, starters and puds not so good. What really spoiled the evening for us was being charged for a basket of prawn crackers that was placed on our table (not requested) while we waited for our order. In other restaurants this would have been on the house. As we had enjoyed our food and didn't want to spoil the evening by complaining, we let this pass. On reflection, I wish we had complained, otherwise how will the restaurant owners learn that this behaviour puts people off returning.

Visited here with friends as we had been before & loved it. Again, food was lovely until I notice a black bug with antennas and legs in my food. When we told the waiter, he said 'oh dear' and took my plate. When he returned I got told that the cook said it was a piece of burnt garlic?? When I questioned this, I got told 'well you've got an idea in your mind now so I can't change that'. Nothing more was said. No apology or even a sorry you were mistaken. Not sure what upset me most, the fact that a bug was in my food or the fact I made to feel like I'm lying. Shame as the food was nice until that point.

Our first visit since the new owners took over and although somewhat dubious as to the local becoming a Thai pub, we certainly enjoyed the warm welcome and the food. The owner 'Jimmy' greeted us and made all the right noises, and his staff were polite and professional. We all enjoyed our food and none of us were left wanting. Am pretty sure we will be visiting again one day.

Average food. The bacon, Brie and cranberry panini needed more than 2 slices of Brie as was dry. The coleslaw was not homemade as stated on their menu. The kids meal came with hand cooked sharp crisps when ideally should have been puffs or a safer type of crisp. Would not pay £34 again for the food we got. Very disappointing. Very much squashed in like sardines too.
