The Elm Tree is a North Star of great selection, wide acceptance, and small wallets. Great bar tender, great beer, and great aesthetic.

Wonderful small quaint pub. The sort that are rapidly dying out in many British towns and cities. Visited briefly on my day trip. Tried a local porter that was great and at a price that felt reasonable. Welcoming staff. No pretence. Wish I lived nearby so I could enjoy a night of live music and Belgian beer. I bet that would be heaven!

A pub that is worth visiting when coming to Cambridge, because it offers the classic concept of a drinking establishment that is part of British culture. It is located in an urban residential area but the vibe it offers is a unique situation from a typical British drinking place. There is no food for sale, only drinks –whether containing alcohol such as beer, spirits or wine– or non-alcoholic drinks. This pub has had some positive reviews and when I visited it certainly was. A pleasant conversation with the bartender and the atmosphere typical of a British drinking establishment make for an unforgettable impression. The pub also serves a wide range of Belgian beers, beside British local and general ales. Greetings from Indonesia.

This was a very welcome return to this very good Cambridge pub for me, primarily because my last visit was at the end of a long crawl and for some stupid reason, I went for a bottle of strong Belgium beer which made my remembrances even more hazy. I remember it had a very decent ale range, but I don’t remember the interior at all, so it was very good to reacquaint myself with the opened out two room space with the main bar room and it’s impressive collection of breweriana and the larger back room with its strange collection of witches hats hanging from the ceiling. Well, I guess it makes a change from beer jugs and glasses. There are 8 ale pumps on the bar and all 8 were in operation dispensing Adnams Southwold and Ghost Ship, Timothy Taylor Landlord, Brewpoint’s Anchorman IPA, Mighty Oak Brewery’s Oscar Wilde and The Old Man and The Sea, Siren Brewery's Bright Pale and Weston’s Rosie’s Pig. This time I ducked the bottled Belgium beer collection and went for the Siren Brewery's Bright Pale which was in very good condition. A few of the group went for Mighty Oaks Old Man of the Sea and the Anchorman IPA and these were reputedly very good as well. A very comfortable pub for a decent pint so happy to give the Elm Tree the rating it deserved on the evidence of this visit.

This place is top notch; and service is friendly and welcoming. The staff do their best to ensure that everyone is enjoying their time there. Some entitled people were jacking up the atmosphere by playing their own music over the pub’s music, and the barman kindly asked them to not. (Entitled guy got a bit pissy but that’s to be expected from entitled people with no sense of their surroundings). I’ll happily continue to go here.

04/03/2024 - 20:00 pm. I have traveled all around Europe and this is the first time this has happened to me. I was having a really good time with a friend of mine when the really rude barman told us off because we used our mobile phone speaker for literally one minute. That was totally inappropriate! Was that really a problem? I have been to this pub many times, but I'm never going back. My suggestion is to hire staff that has good communication skills, respects the customers and don't insult them. We were using our native language, Greek, when the incident happened and I suspect that the behavior of the staff meets the definition of racism.

site_logo

Even though we were trying to communicate with my friend over some random loud drunk people, the staff member who worked on the 4th of March approached us and said that the phone speaker was loud and he asked us if we could not use it because '' they try to promote the communication ''. First of all, I was showing to my friend a really important voice mail and was not loud AT ALL. We could bearly hear those voice mails while the phone was close to our ears. We don't need someone to suggest ways of communication as we're 30 year old professionals and not in the primary school. It was very rude behaviour from the guy at the bar and propably I would say racist as we were speaking Greek at that time. It's a very nice pub but I would suggest to everyone I know not to visit this pub again. If I had the chance to put 0 stars, I would have done that.

My first time at The Elm Tree but certainly not the last. My friends and I walked around the center for a bit before going to The Elm Tree; it wasn’t a particularly warm evening and I was feeling rather chill. Was not in the mood for beers and really really wanted something hot to drink. So while my friends were ordering their ales, I asked a bar keeper if they could maybe make me a cup of tea — and what do you think? They kindly prepared one for me even though it was clear it’s not something they usually serve. It was genuinely nice and kind thing to do. In addition to that, I got asked if I would like to have a piece of lemon in my tea after I mentioned I didn’t usually drink my tea with milk. Never got asked something like that in all my time spent in the UK and was both happy and nostalgic since that’s how we drink tea in my home country. It was such a small thing but it meant a lot. I am looking forward to trying the impressive selection of their Belgian ales — and thank you again for your kindness, The Elm Tree!

I've been to Market House many times, but I think today might be the last. The service was excellent, so I am not blaming that... but the food has went downhill. I had a £36 dry aged steak: it was a sad combination of broccoli an overpowering verde sauce (slathered all over the steak) and what can only imagine was reheated (tiny) roast potatoes. None of the flavours complimented each other very well and the potatoes had a very squishy chewy texture and a burnt butter taste. I was disappointed... the steak was OK for a British interpretation but lacked any crust or depth of flavour (at least it was not chewy)
