Amazing Sunday Roast! The food is delicious, the atmosphere is characteristic and elegant but what impressed us most was the attentive and discreet service! Thanks again from Italy!

Loved this gem in Bath. Being from the US we wanted a beautiful English venue. This place did not disappoint. The food is delicious and served beautifully. But above all the service was excellent. Thanks to Cory for such wonderful service. If you are in bath and want a beautiful meal make a reservation and give this place a try.

We had a really nice tasting menu dinner. The service was good but quite slow, and we found the atmosphere a bit bland (maybe because it was the period between Christmas and New Year). We enjoyed the food though and would definitely come back. [Date of visit: 28/12/2023]

Food was amazing, the service was extremely slow, and the food portions were quite small. We ordered two appetizers and two mains - the service time gap between appetizers & mains were 50mins, which I thought was a bit too much. After finishing our mains, we had to wait another 40mins to get the bill. We're still happy with the food, but I would recommend this place only to people who are willing to spend over 2hrs for a two-course-meal.

Ong where do I begin. The food was to die for. Firstly my favourite ingredients were mentioned for my friends starter so I switched to the same. Pigeon tart with foie gras and black pudding. The pigeon was so tender and I thought I wouldn’t like it. Wrong.., Duck pie to share, well it was brought to feed 3/4 of us. Absolutely fantastic service to which I’d just have to go back again one day

Our friends from the USA reserved a table in Jan/feb for March 13th, plenty of TIME, our friends are Midwest people he shoots game for eating not for sport, I however am not a game eating person something about eating an earth taste does not appeal fish or game, so to the meal, checked website Hare Ragu starter, nope not available, we use local sourced product? Came the reply, I held back my comment, as Rabbits abound in local walks, nothing else appealed, so next was crunchy brown roll with butter and what tasted like a brown beef hot drink to dip the crunchy brown roll, I was informed it's deer? To main meal hoping to fill the empty gap which was in my stomach, fish mash n White beans, not bad, the hunter had deer loved it, to desert lemon tart for me NO, not available, it's on the MENU, 3 people wanted LEMON TART, nothing else appealed to me, Fortunately the friends enjoyed the meal although they commented on organisation of the kitchen staff/manager as for this money in the USA would not be tolerated, I myself expected 5× and got 3 which I think any High quality Bar could serve up in Bath Centeral. Service is essential But also is the FOOD, to make it even more annoying on that evening it was practically empty. I would suggest they send the kitchen manager on a course of stock management and spreadsheet update.after all Master chef seem to manage, maybe they should take a look.

This depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking for a safe dependable restaurant that has something for everyone: This is NOT your place. Vegan, vegetarian and traditional are Not words I would use to describe this restaurant. I would use words like non traditional, out of the box and different to describe it. Let’s start at the beginning. There are a lot of restaurants in Bath. To stand out and offer you something different is definitely the theme they are going for here. Let’s start with the theme. It is a high end outdoors game vibe. Where the aristocrats would have fresh game from the stately homes and estates. The walls are painted green with hand painted accents making the wall look old like the paint was worn with time. The wall art is of game and has mounts of various animals . The atmosphere was as great as well. The was musty odour in the bar area which wasn’t great. But the main dining area was very pleasant. The tables had lien napkins tied with a string and a sprig of rosemary. Very nice to usual plain folded napkin. The staff you can’t fault. Everyone was friendly and welcoming. The waitress was attentive and knowledgeable. They deserved a 10 out of 10. The food is the main point of every restaurant. This where the rating comes into play. The menu is small and has only a few items on it. Which is fine because some restaurants, like this one, don’t have massive kitchens to cater to everyone. They focus on wild game. Like boar, deer, and pigeon. Instead of your normal pork, Beef, Chicken. Venison is their signature. For the bread they serve you a bread in like a muffin shaper. It served on a wooden board with piped butter on a slate plate. Then they give you was is basically venison bone broth to dip the bread in. This was delicious. Strange but very satisfying. For starters we had a pigeon breast tart and cheese tart. The pigeon tart had a lot of flavours, and textures which I found overwhelming. The cheese tart was basically a very fancy quiche, which we highly recommend. For the main we both had the venison; because it was their signature and also the only thing on the menu that caught our fancy. It came with a side of what they call dirty potatoes. Simply put it was mashed potatoes with venison gravy. It was delicious but the only thing I would change is for some reason they put potato skins in that were supposed to be crispy. They were bland chewy pieces of cardboard that should have never been added. The venison came on something that we are not sure what it was. On top was a steamed cabbage filled various items. Not sure what exactly. The venison was cooked a little too rare but was very tasty, however my partner didn’t like it. Then the last side was the most interesting and shocking thing. It was a cooked bone that had something on top of it resembled bread crumbs but was probably salt. You were supposed to remove the marrow and eat it. You hat was a big nope. We tired it but it was too out there for our tastes. My partner sent hers away because she couldn’t look at it while she ate. Finally we get to the desert. Again only a few selection. We both choose the he cream brûlée. It was pistachio flavoured with chocolate chip cookies on the side. This was a complete disaster. First they was a napkin on the plate and the three tiny cookies and pot of cream brûlée were placed on it. Have no idea why they was napkin seems like a waste of time and effort. The cream brûlée was warm and it had not set properly. It was like custard and way to liquidate. The flavour was nice though. The 3 cookies were bone dry and awful. We ended up not finishing the dessert and asked for to be removed. It one thing if you didn’t like something but another thing for it to be cooked wrong. To summarise if you want to try something new that out there then this the place for you. If you want simple traditional food look elsewhere. Would I recommend depends. If you are vegetarian or vegan NO. As nothing is vegetarian let alone vegan. If you like game then yes. For me it would be a let’s not go back.

Our server introduced himself and proved very knowledgeable guiding us through the menu and wine list. He was also friendly and made you feel at home and not rushed. The food was absolutely amazing and the wine complimented it well. The only downside to the evening was an event on in another room but they walked through ours to the bathroom? Firstly I want to say the staff were fantastic, particularly our waitress who couldn't do enough for us. However, the food was disappointing. I had really high expectations based on some of the photos I've seen, but there were some elements that weren't up to par. One of the starters was not cooked well- the pasta was hard when it should have been soft. The potatoes for the roast were chewy (some even rock hard) and tasted like they were not cooked fresh. Even my homemade roast potatoes taste better. We were comped on the starter and given free cocktails as an apology for the potatoes which was appreciated. But considering we were visiting all the way from California and this was a special trip for us, we left feeling a bit disheartened for what we had hoped would be a fabulous meal.

tl;dr - if you're organizing a special occasion I can't recommend The Elder enough. Background - I live in Germany, but come from Bath and in November of this year had a milestone birthday. I wanted to celebrate with family and friends from around the UK and Ireland, and decided that a Sunday Lunch would be a nice touch. I love a good roast and really miss that living in Germany. I wrote to 11 Bath restaurants in May and only got answers from a few. After speaking with each of them, and talking about budgets, the space, etc. I decided on The Elder. I worked with 2 people from the restaurant during the run up to the event. Fiona (who unfortunately left during summer but who was wonderful) and Bianca who took over from her and was equally delightful to work with. Based on my budget and what the restaurant would charge I invited 53 friends and family which enabled us to have the whole dining space from 12 noon until 4pm on the Sunday after my birthday. We'd agreed in the early phases that I would ensure people ordered up front and that I'd share any allergies or intolerances with the restaurant ahead of time. I visited the restaurant in September to get an idea of the seating plan and as we approached the date I was able to give the restaurant a "who sits where, what have they ordered, and what allergies do they have" list. Bianca got all of this on to name plates at each seat which enabled folks to check on arrival that they were getting what they'd ordered. On the day itself the highest compliment I can give Bianca and team is that I was thoroughly relaxed and had a great time. I didn't have to worry about whether people were getting the right food, or whether there was enough wine, or whatever - it was just a really nice opportunity to share amazing food and wine with very special people and for that I can't praise The Elder enough. The feedback I had from my guests was that the food and drink was wonderful, but that what really made the day stand out were the service team. Thank you Bianca (and Fiona) and the rest of The Elder team for a memorable day!

We regularly dine at The Elder and it’s our favourite restaurant in Bath. We prefer coming for dinner but have enjoyed their lunch options as well. We’ve tired the tasting menu and also ordered from à la carte. Can confidently say that the food has never missed the mark, excellent quality local ingredients, great flavour combinations, good variety. Their selection of wines (especially the wine pairings) are great, we also enjoy their cocktails - they were great at preparing the occasional drink which were not on the menu. The interior is something else - we adore the countryside-style atmosphere. Servers are always polite and friendly, they let you enjoy your time and are not over the top. We would highly recommend The Elder, whether it’s for a date or a casual lunch.

We were very excited to try the menu here. The service was very great and the young waiter who served us was very knowledgeable and attentive. Unfortunately the food was disappointing for the price point, it was almost trying to be of 1 Michelin star quality and the starters were very nice, but both of our mains arrived cold and my potato was so salty I could barely eat it - and I love salt! As the mains had taken so long to arrive we didn’t want to complain and wait even longer so we just finished it. Overall we were let down especially for the price and there is definitely room for improvement.

We were incredibly excited to try Bath’s The Elder Restaurant during our holiday in the UK. Their story is inspiring, the ethos is exactly where we hope all restaurants go, and the reviews are consistently positive. While the service was good and the ambiance was interesting to us, the food missed the mark. We love to eat great food, especially when traveling—this meal was good, not great. Our favorite components of the tasting menu included the artichoke velouté, salted butter, and venison broth… not the deer or bass, which could have been the showstoppers. When we go back, we’ll try ordering items a la cart. Outside of the food, dimmer lighting and a less scripted staff would have elevated the experience. TL;DR - The overall experience and cost of the tasting menu did not add up to the total on our bill.

1 star or less in every category. After being seated and ordering, I waited for an unusually long time before the waiter informed me that he had failed to enter my order. I waited longer and eventually received my meal. The piece of steak was almost impossible to eat, as it was not cooked properly. In quiet frustration, I asked for my bill so that I could end this experience. I was brought a small dessert with my bill, but without any utensils. I asked for utensils so that I might at least enjoy the dessert, but never received any. I quietly left the restaurant hoping this was not the best representation of dining in Bath (as this was my first meal after arriving). And thankfully, it was not. I subsequently went to The Circus, which is a short distance from The Elder and very close to the Royal Crescent. I ordered a similar meal and it was absolutely superb! The meat was tender and cooked properly, and the service was first class. Do not waste your time at The Elder. Take a walk to The Circus restaurant for higher quality food and a much better experience.

Poor food and the rudest service We went for lunch at the Elder. We had a couple of small plates ( which we assumed were starters ) plus a burger and a cheese and ham toastie. The manager spent some time telling us how the burgers had to be cooked well done even though we would have preferred it a little pink. But we agreed to well done. It took 40 minutes for anything to arrive and when it did everything came together. The starters were actually pretty good. But the toastie was cold, damp and congealed - i think it was cooked before the small plates. We sent that back immediately and said don’t bother replacing it given it had taken 40 minutes. The burger was bloody ( odd given we were told Bath hygiene inspectors demanded they were well done ). At the end I asked the manager why it had been like this - and he told me that it was well done but I had smeared tomato sauce on it to make it look pink. I must admit I wasn’t expecting that response. Anyway it’s not often you get poor food and are told you have adulterated it yourself. Here’s the photo. We have a video too if the Council want to take a look - it’s pretty obvious what this is. The manager also told me the kitchen was closed on Tuesday lunchtimes. That might explain why no-one else was there but it didn’t explain why they took our booking. I wanted to speak to the owner but the manager wouldn’t give me his contact details. Another sign of an excellent and well-run establishment. Summary - poor food. But good place to go if you like to be called a liar. image0.jpeg

Visited a couple of times now, done drinks outside both times, but not yet eaten here. Anyway... The building itself is great, the bar and communal areas done to a high standard. Staff are friendly, table service outside is quick with no awkward trying to catch the eye of the serving staff. Drinks menu is good, prices about right for the level it is aiming for. Look forward to eating here soon.

If you are passing through Bath this restaurant is absolutely worth a visit. Exquisite food, excellent service, and it gives you the chance to breathe some old English air. Prices a little above average but absolutely commensurate with the quality of the food.

First off we heard good things about the place. It had great ratings and a unique menu with game meats so we thought sure let's try it out. I've been to many Michelin star restaurants and fine dining experiences which this was not but was supposed to be close. The service was outstanding even if the wine menu was lacking. It seemed like they were going through a change of menu or change in chef. Starters were very bad. I had venison tartar and it came on an almost American cornbread muffin. No flavor. I got the pigeon and my wife got the venison. My god what a complete waste of a meal. It felt like a couple of culinary students worked on the dishes independently and put it all together at the last second. I went and found a halal shop later that night.

Disappointing lunch at The Elder terrace. Despite a nearly empty restaurant (I wonder why?) we had to chase up our simple food order after over 30 minutes' wait. We were met with a haughty response from the FOH manager who gave a baffling excuse about a burger having to "rest for twenty minutes". Really? The food showed up after another five minutes' wait without looking like it had benefited much from its long repose, alongside an unseasoned salad without dressing. Not up to the standard we've enjoyed previously in the restaurant proper: not by any stretch. The same lukewarm, unapologetic excuse was served up by the same manager on paying the bill, with a bizarrely defensive attempt to claim that the wait had been closer to 30 than 40 minutes. Glad that's settled then. Otherwise great service from the rest of the team, and we enjoyed the quality of the food, even if its preparation could have been better.

The deer 🦌 entree was absolutely to die for - soft and tender, packed with flavors. Unfortunately, the service did not match the food quality. We arrived 5 mins early and were turned away to wait outside by a waitress with a stone-cold face, there was a dirty plate on our table when we were seated, at one point the waiter spilled water over a glass and didn’t clean it up, causing water to drip all over my dress, they also missed a dish all together…

Service was professional and had plenty of personality. Food was on the more expensive side, but the quality warranted the price tag. The pork cracking was nothing short of perfect. I’m a bit disappointed that I didn’t have enough room left for dessert! One of the best meals I’ve had in the region. Would recommend, would go again.

4.5 Google really needs to work on half stars...The Elder, a lovely game focused restaurant in Bath does a wonderful job with creative dishes such as Fallow Deer tartare, oat milk pannacotta with strawberry coulis and venison steaks with a lovely pea puree and potatoes. Overall a great meal with a fun cocktail list and good wines. The decor is a bit much for my taste with the stuffed animals but it does fit the restaurant. Overall, an enjoyable experience

The service was great, accommodating and atmosphere was good but the food was disappointing. Been to many high end restaurants with Michelin stars around the world. I do not mind paying for good food but the food quality/combinations did not reflect the price of the meal. Limited wine selection. Bought pizza after the 7 course meal.

Excellent food and good service. The only problem is the deliveries to the kitchen just a few feet from the tables, not a good experience. Having said that the food was almost faultless. Light but packed with flavours. Not that it's cheap c £70 each for 3 of us having 3 courses and a bottle of wine.

Nick and the staff at The Elder were hospitable and friendly. They treaded us like friends and brought out the most delicious food I’ve had in a long time. It was art…. The flavors and textures were multilayered and interesting. We traveled all the way from Florida to visit this special town and try the amazing food and it has not disappointed us! I highly recommend this restaurant to any foodie who’s looking for something special.

First date night out with my partner since lockdown in 2020 and I got to say I couldn't have picked a better restaurant. Service was thoughtful and very reactive to who you were. The drinks and wine recommendations perfect and the food...THE FOOD! The fattest oysters, the smoothest chicken parfait, the tenderest fallow deer, the most balanced chocolate dessert. It was worth every penny. We will definitely come again!

Creative dishes, locally sourced ingredients and a sustainable ethos, but with a down-to-earth feel and lots of heart. Loved my meal here and the staff were so lovely, plus you can't beat a starter of hot bread fresh from the oven! My husband and I had dinner on Sunday evening 16th January, which happens to be my birthday and I am only mentioning this as the restaurant quite frankly ruined the experience of having a nice birthday dinner. We do need to mention from the start that this is a fine dinning restaurant and carries a certain price tag, which we were aware of and expected a certain level of service and high quality of ingredients and presentation. It all started really well, we were led to our table, restaurant looks beautiful, seated very close to the kitchen which for me it's a plus as I like to observe the work of the kitchen staff. When we were ready to place our order with our server Cristian, my husband ordered a bottle of wine that was even pointed on the menu, only for him to say out loud: "ah the 88 pounds bottle". This is not not acceptable in a fine dinning establishment and also, I did not need to know the price of that bottle since this was a surprise birthday dinner. Then my husband was challenged on his choice of main, as he did ask if they serve the deer dish in other way than the Sunday roast option and when he chose the fish instead, server was quite rude and confused on why was he asked about the meat main if you're not going to order it...... Bread arrived with a bullshot tea and salty butter, which was absolutely gorgeous, however the mini loaf it's quite small, I am sure serving one per person won't bankrupt the restaurant. The starter which was a tartare of bream, was again gorgeous from the presentation to the quality of ingredients, smokiness of fish, freshness of apple and puffed rice cracker. But..... and there is a big "BUT" here, no one comes to explain and of the the dishes, they are just being plonked in front of you and that is all. Again, you're a fine dinning restaurant put that effort and train your staff to explain dishes and at least pretend they care. The main was the biggest let down- we both ordered the monkfish, was so salty to the point of barely being able to eat it, the miso glaze was overpowering and you couldn't taste anything else but salt. That is very unfortunate, because monkfish tail it's such a fine piece of fish and does not need too much to shine. Again, no explanation of the dish whatsoever. Comes the desert the orange soufflé, served in a little copper pan which obviously came straight from the oven- not even a word from the server warning us that is hot(table next to us was given the clear warning and much more attention than us- maybe we didn’t fit his personal profile of people worth dinning there??) . Ice cream next to it came almost melted in a sad little puddle. Overall not even once we were asked how are any of the dishes we were served, and when he was clearing our mains, I did mention I didn't enjoy the main as it was extremely salty- all I got was: I will tell the kitchen...obviously no one came to talk to us, not even a faked: "sorry for that" . The impression we got from the evening was that the staff starting from front of the house to kitchen staff were just tired, bored and over with this week's work and had no interest in making the experience pleasant for the diners. But this is not acceptable, as the evening had a £220 price tag for us, and it doesn't matter if a customer can afford to spend these kind of money or maybe someone saved up for months to have a dinner like this. Maybe this was a "bad day", maybe staff is overworked, underpaid, again this came on our cost and I do not think it's fair. P.S. Please train your staff better, I could have had better service with less snarkiness from a pizzeria.
