I found this restaurant in the 2017 edition of The Michelin Guide so assumed it must be ok even if the guide was three years old. It isn’t. Dreadful interior design with no character or ambiance. The service was ok but the food only so so. All round very disappointing.

Total lack of character and ambience courtesy of abysmal interior decor. The whole experience never got above mediocre. Heaven knows how this restaurant ever got in The Michelin Guide. The one upside was that the staff were efficient and courteous.

I took my fiancé' to the Tunbridge Wells Eating House on Saturday night and we both really enjoyed it. The décor is lovely although we had one of the only tables with just chairs which was a bit annoying as I usually like to offer the cushioned bench seat to her but this is a very minor niggle that is personal to me. Overall the service was great although I did notice the adjacent table had to wave for the waitress to get her attention but I believe that was to pop outside for a cigarette so they were likely being slightly impatient anyway. I had a sausage roll starter and venison pie for main and she had olives and rump steak which was all very very tasty and as my fiancé is pregnant they made here a lovely raspberry and lime mocktail which was really to our liking. I'm sure we'll be heading back there soon for dinner, lunch &/or breakfast again at some point.

Been eating Breakfast here once a week for the last three or four years. They all know my order, I never have to ask. Rolled up today at the usual 8.30 to be confronted by someone new (can only have been the owner) who said they didnt open until 9. When I asked when this policy had started he rudely told me thats how it had always been. This was clearly untrue as my years of attendance proved. An arguement that cut no ice. Frankly, if they are treating long term regulars like this then the underlying attitude towards everyone else must be pretty appalling. I suggest you try further along the Pantiles.

We'd had a great time here before, so a few disappointing things this time - the banquettes were covered in crumbs/dirt and obviously hadn't been swept or hoovered. The serving staff were friendly, helpful and easy to get hold of - but were unnecessarily very close several times, without face visors, so a bit worrying. Other than that, nice food and jolly atmosphere.

Although they didn’t have any record of my booking, the service and food were excellent. Unfortunately our table was next to a extremely smelly StBernard dog. The seating is also looking very shabby. Didn’t really that the dining area was also a bar and lounge area, which spoiled what could have been a very nice experience

On arrival they didn’t have our reservation, which put me on guard. The dining area is part bar, part lounge and part restaurant. The bench seats are pretty grubby and are showing signs of age. As they didn’t have our reservation they didn’t have our pre notified dietary request either, not going well so far. This all changed because the two servers on duty were incredibly helpful, making sure that the dietary requirements were available. A little wait for the food considering there were very few people dining, but the food was worth the wait. Steak and vegetables cooked perfectly and very tasty. The staff remained attentive during our meal without being a nuisance. In summary great food, if a little pricey, good service, but let down by shabby seating and having a table adjacent to a smelly Saint Bernard. It struggles to have the area used for three different uses, bar for the man and his dog, lounge for people lounging on a couch and a restaurant. Yes we would visit again but hopefully without the dog, a restaurant really isn’t the place for anything but an assistant dog.

Have not been back since we had my Dad's 80th birthday meal in the upstairs room here (which was very good) so was looking forward to eating here again. The foaccia was amazing - warm, bouncy, fresh out of the oven! While not an extensive menu there is definitely something for everyone. Scallops and black pudding were a classic starter, and the chicken burger was cooked just right. No room for dessert. Good range of small plates too. Service was really friendly and on-point. Good VFM overall - 2 appetisers, 2 starters, 2 mains and 2 bottles of Merlot came in at around £55 per head. The only reason I haven't given ambience full marks is that the eating area used to feel like a proper French brasserie , with lots of pictures on the walls and a cosy feel to it. It now has pink blossom wallpaper and a large blossom "tree" coming down from the ceiling and while quite pretty, it doesn't give an especially cosy feel. Preferred the decor from when it was Brasserie des Sources. But that's just a personal thing, and couldn't fault food or service.

I have visited on Jazz in the Pantiles and a few times with normal service. At Jazz in the Pantiles, a very busy time with outside seating, we were a little disappointed that the vegetarian menu was not on as we had a number of vegetarians in the party. This was not explained to us when we booked but a £70 booking fee was taken. Most recently I dined on my own, early evening. The food came out promptly and was cooked well however I found that I needed to be active to get a second drink.

Went here on a Thursday for Jazz on the Pantiles. The menu is ok, nothing special but pricey for what is served. You could cook this at home. We sat outside table nearest the restaurant. Not a good place to sit as they serve drinks then a crowd forms behind the table so it is like sitting in a goldfish bowl. One of our friends asked for a bowl of ice cream he got given one scoop! When we complained the waiter became agressive and rude. Just so I do not tar all the staff with the same brush the two female waitresses were excellent. We waited a long time between each courses, watched our food travel amongst the crowd. Paid £275.00 for five people.....would we do it again NO. Very dissappointed........

I had lunch here with a friend last Sunday. Staff were friendly and helpful and the food was very good. We really enjoyed it and will definitely visit again. 2 points to mention that prevented me giving 5 stars – we both had coffee after our meal and it was the strongest coffee I’ve ever tasted and, for our taste, was on the verge of rendering it …… undrinkable. They really need to change the blend/strength to appeal to majority taste. Also, as a vegetarian, while there were quite a few choices on the menu, I hate to see a ‘Roasts’ section with no veggie (Nut Roast?) option included. Vegetarians like roast dinners too! Not too difficult to make a Nut Roast and have veggie gravy/roast potatoes. Those are the only 2 improvements I would like to see. Will be returning.

TW Eating House (basically the dining area of the TW Hotel on the Pantiles) utterly deserted on a summer Friday night - very odd and inexplicable to the staff. Sat outside; food, friendly service, efficient and swift. My lamb was over spiced and tough but not over cooked. The half lobster was okay but clearly the runt of the litter! The service was exceptional and really attentive. All the staff are very friendly and professional. The food is obviously pre catered and as soon as we ordered was on the table which is probably a sign of pre plated food to cope with the high demand of the busy Jazz evening. The main was very simple nothing to rave about. It was hot, well presented but quite small portions on plates. I would recommend eating here for the experience of the jazz evening ambience but try not to sit directly in front of the band as you cannot talk freely until the break as quite loud but also nice to be amongst the party vibe!

Unfortunately, despite the fact the restaurant was virtually empty, two out of three drinks were incorrect. We had no starters and two of the mains were very good, but the third had to be sent back as the burger was not 'well done'. It was replaced (without fuss) but the returned burger was so 'well done 'as to be inedible. Two of the three puddings (£7 each) were unpleasantly sweet and almost inedible. However, the third was very nice.

This is the most perfect location, particularly on a sunny day. However, the food was not great. We went for breakfast and my scrambled eggs had tonnes of shell in them. I mentioned this to the waiter and he offered to replace it. When my breakfast was returned the scrambled egg was raw. I didn't have it in my heart to say it still wasn't right. When another waiter cleared the plates he didn't comment on the uneaten food. The bill, when it came, included my breakfast and also an item that we didn't order. We spotted this and we were refunded for the item that we hadn't ordered. I do think they should have knocked the price of my breakfast off the bill, as my food arrived when everyone else had almost finished. We will vote with our feet and go elsewhere in future. There are lots of other lovely cafes and restaurants in the Pantiles.

On a sunny February Sunday The Eating House was doing brisk business in the Pantiles at its outside tables. It was a beautiful day and the meal did not disappoint. I had the king scallops with cauliflower purée and crispy pancetta. It was quite simply superb, one of the best scallop dishes I have ever eaten. The scallops themselves were cooked to perfection and melted in the mouth. The beetroot terrine with goat cheese dressing which my husband chose also came highly recommended. We both had the short rib hash to follow which was very good but I will never forget those scallops.

innovative vegan options The starter and the vegan burger really nice but as on our previous visit the "oven chips" were inedible - probably packet frozen and reheated. Shame when the chef has done so well creating lovely vegan options. A whole meal or multigrain bun would be nice with the burger too but that's a personal thing. The service is always attentive and thoughtful, without being aloof and over formal. Its great to be able to relax on the sofas with a drink prior to eating. So good that our fostered rescue dog was welcome too. We ate here on Saturday evening at an 8pm booking and only 3 other tables populated which given that most other restaurants were fully booked was a little surprising but more understandable after my experience. My goats cheese starter looked lovely but cheese would have been nicer if a softer cheese and griddled and the figs would have been nicer warm but ok. My main of partridge was very dry and over cooked and overall an incredibly salty dish; as no one came to check it was not easy to alert that there was a problem as despite there only being a few tables occupied staff were rather elusive. On top of this I asked for a specific wine and was given something else without telling me and when I later queried it the waiter seemed to feel that wasn't an issue and my problem. If they had said they didn't have the wine I asked for I would have ordered a bottle of something so they lost that sale as their lack of concern meant that I stuck to water! Despite my comments and returning half my main I wasn't offered anything as an alternative or another option. My husband on the other hand really enjoyed the veloute starter and John Dory main which is the only reason I gave this an average instead of a poor. This is one of the closest restaurants to our house so disappointed that it wasn't much better. I fear they are used to a more transient clientele and aren't so worried if they have a bad experience but should aim for more local custom by improving standards and service and thereby gaining a fuller restaurant. This is our second visit and both times disappointing and as we eat out a number of times a week it would be nice to have a good local option. Their one saving grace with their serving staff was the youngest gentleman there who was really lovely and very sorry about the experience.

Girlfriend and I stayed elsewhere but were walking around the Pantiles and fancied dinner so popped in here. I saw a "michelin" sign outside but think I misread this as that related to the hotel and not the restaurant! The menu was a reasonable range but quite expensive. Girlfriend went for pork belly and me for hake.We shared some bread and oil at the start - that was a good helping for its £3 price. The pork belly came with a generous helping of possibly my favourite food-related product of all time - crackling! She let me have about 10% of it which was very generous of her too.Back to my own and the hake was well-cooked and peeled onto the fork well. The veg was done very well too and cannot have any complaints. We were sat in the window but with the canopy and the lighting this was still quite dark, so I guess a fairly traditional hotel dining room. The food/drink came to £54 without the 12.5% service charge: I felt that £61 for these and two drinks was pricey.I've deliberately left the service to last. I was very happy with the service throughout and it was definitely the best thing about this restaurant. The 12.5% fee was definitely justifiable on that basis!

First time back here in 10 months , and on a Monday evening - always a testing time in terms of ambience anywhere I think - and it came up trumps. Nice table position - in fact very few positions where one would think "wouldn't want to sit there" so the layout inside has improved a bit from when it was "Brasserie des Sources." Food was great and portions in the mains on the generous side. My friend had the truly fabulous harissa lamb, incredibly tender, which I will have next time! I was restricted on diet so had a chicken and bacon salad but it had plenty of interest including some lovely salty black olives. The prix fix menu if good VFM - my friend had it I didn't - but they did forget to account for that at the end and needed to re-do the bill. Still the service was friendly and well-timed. I was staying in the hotel attached and therefore used the restaurant for breakfast (included in my room rate). The Eggs Benedict was great, although the ham was a little fatty, but could easily be pulled away from the meat. The Eggs were perfectly cooked and the hollandaise sauce was also tasty. The Latte I had was nice, although as it was served in a glass, it meant that you have to leave it to cool. Perhaps investment in some proper Latte glasses (with handles) would allow for a better experience and not burnt fingertips.

Popped in for Sunday Brunch. There were candles burnt down and melted across tables a good clue that they had not been cleaned and he waitress had food all down her waistcoat and trousers. Eggs Benedict was fine although the ham appeared to be from a packet - pale and very thin.I have eaten here before and the standards were far better. Disappointed.

We ate in a group for a family occasion on a Saturday evening. Its a really nice room and great for a special occasion. Service was good - perhaps a little too good as they wanted our table for another reservation afterwards. The did offer us a table in the 'lounge area' though. Drinks were very good and the breads were absolutely delicious. Generally, I think everyone really enjoyed their meals, although strangely the toast which accompanied my baked camembert smelled/tasted of cigarettes - we werent sure if this was deliberate!! There was an issue with the bill in that they added a load of main courses from another table onto our bill, which we could have paid if we werent more observant. It took some time to sort out and slightly took the edge off the evening, as the rest of the group was kept waiting. It would have been a nice gesture to give us a drink or a discount as we had been helpful by moving table and had been patient over the incorrect bill.

We visited for morning coffee and pastries. A party of 6, so we ordered 2 x 3 pastries to be served with 5?? When we asked if the remaining one was coming we were then told they had run out... They could bake some more, but that would be 20 minutes and clearly too much trouble. Finally they only charged for 3. Then the cappuccino turned up as a latte and the hot chocolate turned up in water glasses - so no way to hold a hot drink without burning your hand until the drink is cold. Don't expect a warm welcome on a Sunday morning...

We had a lovely table by the window in a very atmospheric corner of the restaurant. I had heard the food was mediocre a few years ago so we were not expecting very much. However, as soon as we received the menu I was very pleasantly surprised. I always believe a shorter menu is better as their is more focus, and yet plenty of choice for the meat v fish lovers in our group. The starters were beautifully presented and delicious as were the mains. My guinea foul was fantastic, perfectly cooked. All the steaks cooked to order as asked and friendly waiting staff. We will definitely return and look forward to eating outside when the weather improves.

Even though the young girl serving us was on her first day at The Eating House she had been thrown into it by having to handle our table. She did very well considering. We realised her novice status and hopefully helped break her in relatively painlessly. The starter of Roast Parsnip Soup, with curry oil, was absolutely yummy. My 8 oz Sussex Pole Rib-Eye steak was excellent, served with tomatoes, mushrooms, hand-cut chips and a peppercorn sauce was very tasty. In fact so good that I skipped the dessert, which is very unusual for me.The young girl did really quite well for her first day and we praised her efforts, as well as a nice tip to encourage her to persevere. We will go back there again when the next opportunity presents itself, hopefully very soon.

Breakfast is a must here. They have excellent choices and a good variety. Their full English breakfast included the blood sausage, tomato, eggs, bacon, and all the goodies accompanied by pots of tea and café latte. Service was gracious every morning. The night we arrived from Bordeaux, Gatwick had been fogged in resulting in a seven -hour delay for our English arrival. There was no way we would have been able to make our dinner reservation or even arrive before closing. When we called the restaurant to inform them of our predicament, they kindly offered to take our orders over the phone so that we could get fed before the kitchen closed. The food was really good and very comforting in the wet and cold outside. There were four of us and we had pork belly, soup, fish, and salad with a pint of beer. . Definitely recommend Tunbridge Wells Hotel Restaurant as a very good eatery.

It took a long time to get our food. Other customers who arrived after we did seemed to jump ahead of us. Waited 25 minutes for bill. We eventually had to ask again before we left. Could easily have gone without paying it was that poorly organised. The 12.5% service charge was removed from the bill at our request.

We just popped in for lunch having perused the menu outside at £16 for two courses per person. What a pleasant surprise - delicious, well presented food, in a gastro pub type setting. The service was pleasant and no hidden extras on the bill. We will definitely go back when we are next in the Pantiles. It does have rooms, but cannot comment on that.

Found the manageress less than child friendly and often quite rude. It's a shame because otherwise it would be nice.

I was blown away by the attention to detail during our stay. Right from the start, the staff were welcoming and helpful. As we stepped into the room—wow! The ambiance was amazing, from the music playing on the vintage-style radio to the little cakes and the ‘Happy Anniversary’ note. Dinner and breakfast were delightful—the best sea bass and mash we’ve ever had, compliments to the chef. We left feeling truly relaxed and rejuvenated.

Since retiring 12 years ago, we have had many meals , good, and indifferent at National Trust properties….this was undoubtedly the best. The menu board said “Chicken, Bacon and Tarragon Stew” which almost put me off! Glad it didn’t, as it was beautiful. In fact if it had been served in a French restaurant I would have been delighted. I very well run restaurant , definitely one of the best NT ones.

We were looking forward staying here, but so disappointing our massages got cancelled two days before staying, the room was disappointing toilet was running water all night and the bed was the most uncomfortable bed I've ever stayed in, mattress so hard that I even tried sleeping in the chair in the room. Dated rooms and bathroom needs attention, plug didnt fit the bath and the coffee and tea tray had to put the kettle on the floor as no socket for it. Room service approx hour wait for a sandwich, to be fair it was a really good sandwich though. Breakfast very tasty but over 45 minutes wait and had a hair on the sausage! Also had to ask for our toast as got forgotten and the staff were so rushed that you couldn't even talk to them. Staff all rushed off their feet so no reflection on them, poor management I suspect not hiring enough people and trying to get them to do too much. Also walls are paper thin in the rooms, can hear when people are going to the toilet and hear full conversations. Needs work to get it up to par for a 4 star hotel.
