Just short of thirty quid for a burger with fries, flat white and a Fanta. I’m not short of a few quid but c’mon? No wonder it was empty.

Staff pleasant enough, and seating is comfortable. I had veggie masala, with rice and a side of fries. My meal came in good time, but I waited for my friends to be served before I started. After 10mins, my friends urged me to start, as the meal was getting cold. Another 5mins elapsed before they were served, by which time I had finished. It would have been so easy to hold my meal back, and serve it with the others hot. The masala was bland to the point of tasteless, the portion being very small, which was, ironically, a blessing. Never again.

Appalling. Been coming here for over 11 years for breakfast and the standard has deteriorated. Tiny portions, paid £7 for a this; but looks like a 3 quid meal! Tea used to be included but now have to get it separately despite having a full English. Portobello mushroom was soggy and flat as a pancake and baked beans were cold. They are trying to achieve the "less is more" approach but has failed miserably. Was left hungry and will never visit again. Such a shame as had some good memories there!

An August breakfast after lockdown and I was hoping for the old "Pick any four items" breakfast from pre-virus days. The new menu change has taken the four item option away and just offers a basic Full English. I think that this is a shame as not everyone likes everything in the said Full English. But the avocado on toast with bacon was very nice and I would eat here again. This was one of those cheap days where the whole breakfast for two cost just over ten pounds. I hope I've played some small part in saving the world.

I've been here several times for breakfast before lockdown & this was my first post lockdown breakfast & I found it tastier than before. I had smoked salmon , scrambled eggs on sour dough toast with cream cheese. It was a generous tasty portion. My husband had avocado on sour dough toast with bacon which he enjoyed. The addition of pomegranate was a nice touch. We will return.

I have visited this restaurant last summer and had to send food back because it wasn’t up to standard. This year I went for lunch. My friend ordered a cooked breakfast he said it had been warmed up. We waited 45 mins for our food to arrive. The manager that is also manager of the Italian restaurant below this one in Fenwick seems to be working there full time now. His hygiene was unbelievable. They are telling us to dettol gel our hands before eating I would have loved to have taken the cloth he was wiping over the tables and checked to see how many germs were in that. He literally had a cloth in his hands not even spraying the tables first. He picked up dirty plates ect and just wiped off if any food was left behind in table. I saw him going from table to table. If he had a spray with him god knows when the cloth was washed or changed ect. Please do something about this place. Get new management in or shut it down.

Looking for a place for a spot of breakfast, we tried The Eatery Restaurant & Cafe on the 2nd (I think) floor of Fenwicks. My wife has eaten here before, but this was my first time. I opted for the small breakfast, where you select four items from the big breakfast list and toast. This suits me fine, as I always take off some of the other things that I do not like from the big breakfast. I had a pot of breakfast tea to drink. This, in my oppinion was too weak. Next time, I'll ask for less water in the pot. But all in all a nice place to have breakfast and I will happily return.

Had the worst experience here today. The breakfastcomponents had clearly been sitting for a good few hours (probably more!!) the sausages were borderline inedible, hard as rock and dry as cardboard. The breakfast arrived, I cut open the poached egg and it was rock hard, so I asked for another one, a lady with a terrible attitude bought a replacement to me, as she put it on the table I knew it was undercooked so I cut it strait away in front of here and the whole raw egg inside spilled out all over the plate. I said it’s completely raw, and she just simply said ‘uhmm, okay’ then grumpily took it back to the kitchen when she came back with the replacement she dumped it on the table and said ‘another egg for you’..... it’s your fault it’s ‘another’ egg??!! Maybe if the kitchen hadn’t made such a mess of the first two you wouldn’t have had to bring me another one?! Anyway we left as soon as we could. I couldn’t stand being around the waitress who kept peering over with a face like thunder!! Then I had to run strait to the toilet! I was absolutely fine before eating here. I’m still very poorly! DONT EAT HERE

The all day breakfast clearly refers to the breakfast being cooked first thing in the morning and then left all day under the heat lamps in the kitchen. Hard dry sausages, unwashed gritty mushrooms terrible attitude from the waitress. You'd be better over the road at McDonald's, in fact you'd be better off just not eating. The cafe is seperate a seperate entity to Fenwicks but surly they should take some responsibility for this awful place and get it put strait as it's just plain embarrassing.

Seeking refuge from a very busy Canterbury I found this cafe in Fenwicks. I only required a light snack and was very pleased with what was served. Excellent sandwiches were very competitively priced and for a small extra sum you could get a side of good fries. The beverages were good too (not always the case in this type of café). It was good that you could order hot food that was brought to the table, so that one did not receive nasty cold food that was intended to be hot.

This is a very pleasant and one of the better eateries located in a retail store in terms of menu and actual food. However the service is truly terrible. I have eaten here a few times and the lunch time service is unnecessarily dreadful. Unless you're there at 12, you have to spend about 20 minutes queuing and then on top of that they put a sign out warning you that there is a 30 minute wait once you've ordered the food. Surely it can't be beyond them to employ a couple of part time staff to work over the lunchtime period. The tables remain uncleared until the lunch time period is over so you have to either clear one yourself or sit next to a dirty table if you're lucky enough to find one free. Outside lunch time, it is a nice place to eat or have a drink. The food is good and the staff are very pleasant. I just can't understand why the most prestigious store in Canterbury seemingly just doesn't seem to care about the unacceptably awful lunchtime service as it has always been like this.

Most of Canterbury walked in with me! Some people left but I could see the queue was moving steadily so stayed. Really pleased I did.The salmon and crayfish salad was just right, not too much dressing and fresh green leaves. The staff were busy but family friendly and there was a steady stream of people coming in.The one downside was the sticky table. I complained about the service in this eatery a while back after several awful experiences and was reassured that management and staff were changing and improvements were being made. I have to say, I have visited twice since the changes (I'm sat in the Eatery writing the review right now) and I see a little improvement but not much. My last visit was chaotic as the food took an age and the tills weren't working so we spent a long time just waiting .. The food then was ok but nothing special and not very hot. We decided to try again today, had a discussion with staff as to whether we could order food as it was 2.50pm and hot meals end at 3pm .. Fair enough if that is the case .. But we were told yes it's ok. However, the food we received was lukewarm at best and the chips (whilst nicely presented) were cold. I would have preferred being told no it's not a good idea as you will just get what's sitting on the counter as its too late too cook anything properly this time of day rather than waste our money. Again. Really disappointing. The up side is that, despite the food, the staff are really friendly .. Happy to get the milk for you that the other staff have forgotten etc and the moany staff I remember well don't seem to be here? I hope it improves because the eatery is a really nice space!

I've been here a few times mainly because it's one of the few venues in canterbury where it's easy to park a pram (or a few prams) up and eat, so it's popular for baby meets. The food is so-so, but the service is pretty dire. I went today and it took almost an hour to get our food, which was so boiling hot throughout it had clearly been microwaved. We had to clear the table ourselves and there were no high chairs so I had to hold my squirming daughter whilst trying to eat and feed her. Other times I've been with groups of other mums and we've had odd remarks made about how long we've sat there (2-3 hrs) despite continually ordering drinks and food throughout. It seems like they haven't quite realised that new parents are a key market for them.

Popped in here on a few occasions when visiting to have the full English breakfast. It's always consistently good so thought we'd go for the lunch option. The menu is ok - nothing particularly jumps out at you as a must have dish. I opted for the fish and chips which came out quickly but were cooked to perfection. The batter was incredible and so was the fish. Often in places where they serve fish and chips you end up with more batter than fish but it isn't the case here. The thick cut chips were good as well although by the time you've had the fish you're pretty full anyway. The price wasn't too bad either - £8 for the meal. It's a shame there isn't more variety on the menu but you have to accept that to a degree when eating in a department store restaurant. The staff all around were good and the chap who brought the food to us clearly enjoyed his job which was nice to see. Would come back but probably stick to the breakfast next time.

I have frequently used this cafe as I like to shop in Fenwicks and although it can be a mixed experience today convinced me that the management is so poor I will dine elsewhere. i ordered Rarebit that was around five pounds this turned out to be one thin slice of low quality bread with bagged salad and dressing. I realised it looked slightly overdone, it was only after eating a small amount that I realised how burnt the bread and topping was on the dish. I told the waiter who was quite helpful and asked if I wanted it replaced I explained I was running out of time and would prefer a refund. He said one of the women at the till would help. I decided to approach the staff and was surprised at the poor attitude of the woman I had assumed was their cleaner when I explained. She was quite aggressive and said you have nearly eaten it all, I hadn't and she told me she could not show it to the chef as I had eaten all despite the burnt cheese and bread being on the plate. I told her I would speak to him. She declined and said she was hiss boss. if this is her cafe or franchise she is not doing herself any favours, my fellow diner was appalled at her rudeness. She did refund my money however I felt she had zero customer service skills was confrontational and not at all interested in the fact that I did not have a good dining experience. I presume their chef is very inexperienced as the whole dish was awful. My friends egg sandwich was acceptable hence the one star.

My husband and I used to be regulars for morning coffee. However will be going elsewhere as standards seem to be dropping fast. The filter coffee is always Luke warm and when I took them back was told there was nothing they could do about it as it was the machine. It appears the filter coffee is provided by some sort of flask from the kitchen. The blinds in the windows are nearly all broken being permanently down. If I had purchased blinds that had broken so quickly I would demand replacements from the providers. The scones are hit and miss - sometimes lovely but more often than not now hard and crumbly or undercooked and stodgy. We are often first arrival on a Sunday morning and tables are sometimes covered in crumbs from previous day. Tried lunch recently but not the choice there used to be and the soup was Luke warm. A shame because the restaurant is pleasant and comfortable but we have decided to go elsewhere now.

Had a light lunch served by pleasant polite young staff Excellent salad and great value for money . Had a morning cup of tea with cake at M & S that was dreadful and cost virtually the same as this instore cafe Do not expect restaurant food however it is a good cafe for a speedy break The most comfortable chairs in Canterbury and great city views.

I visited The Eatery with my friends for lunch on Friday. We weren’t sure what to expect because we hadn’t been to eat in Fenwick for years. We arrived and were greeted by the amazing rustic but modern décor, its like something you would see in London. We all loved it! We managed to something on the menu to suit my fussy friends demands (one vegetarian & health one health freak). We had the sharing board to start, which ticked all the boxes and then I had the Slow Cooked Pulled Pork Burger, which came in a barbecue sauce with salad and homemade chunky chips. The portion size was very generous and the pulled pork was divine, giving local competitors a run for their money! I would definitely visit again, I want to try the posh Kentish sausage and mash next time.

After my last review, I was invited by Fenwicks to return for an afternoon tea. It was very enjoyable, and a nice atmosphere. A big thank you to Hannah and her staff for an excellent tea. I will certainly return.

I took my wife and friends to Fenwicks in Canterbury for afternoon tea on Monday, 29th December 2014.. It would seem you can have afternoon tea in the morning or even afternoon tea at lunch time, but you cannot have afternoon tea in the afternoon. We arrived at 3:15 pm,waited 10 minutes to be served,as staff were busy cleaning , to be told, sorry, the kitchens are closed at 3 , we don't serve afternoon tea after that.

After ordering quite a simple lunch for me and my girlfriend, two beef burgers, we sat down for the long wait. After half an hour one burger came out with some warm lumpy orange looking coleslaw. after another 15 mins we had to ask where out other burger was, at which point they went and said the kitchen forgot about it. An hour after we first ordered we had both burgers. My girlfriend had already finished at this point so i knew what i was expecting. You know those dry, burnt, falling apart burgers you get at family BBQs, it was just like that. My coleslaw was warm and lumpy as well and they chips were way too thick! Not worth the money at all and no apology was given for the terrible meal. Please just don't go there! You will get better burgers from the street vendors for a quarter the price!

My friend took me for afternoon tea.The sandwiches were huge but cut into fingers the fillings were not too bad.The cakes were minute and all warm and made with gluey chocolate. The scones were the smallest and hardest I have ever eaten despite being served a huged bowl of jam and cream. It was not expensive.I think it was the left overs from lunch truly awful. The old restaurant was far superior as they had a decent chef.At least we had a good laugh at how bad it was.Staff however are pleasant although all the old employees seem to have disappeared but most seem to lack experience

We visited the new restaurant in Fenwicks Department Store for a coffee, now renamed The Eatery. The actual area has been revamped, and is not now as inviting as it was, very modern and no 'soul'. Also, they have removed the raised area which also housed a small, sectioned off area where Mothers could feed their babies with privacy, or sit with young children. There are no pictures on the now white wood clad walls. Although the tables are spaced well apart, and they have retained the tables around the semi-circular exterior wall. Our coffee was also a disappointment, well below par, so either the staff need more training or their new modern coffee machine needs to be checked. I ordered two Americano Coffees with hot milk, and heard the young woman taking my order ask for an Americano with milk. I reiterated my order, and did receive two Americano coffees, but with cold milk so then asked for hot milk. This was given but no apology for the error. Their menu has Burgers, which you can add salad or chips to, cakes, Hot Bites (such as Rarebit), a battered Fish Dish, Salads, as well as soup of the day - which you have to ask a member of staff about to find out what it is (when asked by the customer before me this question, she had to wait whilst they went into the kitchen to find out), and they now do Roast Dinners only on Sunday. Previously, when known as The Terrace Restaurant, they had roasts, with a choice of meats every day, and more choice of other hot meals, and the restaurant was always busy very shortly after opening at lunchtime. The type of soup available was always named on their menu board, along with the Dish of the Day and other Chef's suggestions. It will be a shame if this is going to be the permanent level of service in a once very popular eating place in Canterbury. It has changed from a comfortable restaurant with friendly service toone which is the same as many of the other Coffee Shop/Eateries in the City.

Went for lunch today at the revamped Eatery, what a shambles, looks like the dreaded bistro kid has done it again, why does a simple sandwich have to be served with a salad enough for four people and Chips! The Welsh Rarebit was shocking, no taste, texture of paper that's sat in glue, awful. Whilst waiting couldn't help notice the amount of food left, most people looked disappointed to say the least.

The second-floor restaurant in Fenwicks has recently re-invented itself as The Eatery. The self-service counter with its tempting salads and cakes has gone. There is a menu on the wall, and staff take your order and cash at what used to be the self-service counter; drinks are still self-service. A children’s box is available at £4.95 into which you can put five items including a juicy drink and lollipop (some parents may disapprove on health grounds), also fruit, crisps and a sandwich. Fair enough. The chicken schnitzel at £7.95 was a complete disaster, dry and over-cooked, shaped more like a chunk than a fillet. The all-day breakfast at £6.95 was satisfactory, especially the local Kentish sausages. Sauces are apparently available but were not offered by the waitress who brought the dish. The venue is pleasant, there are good views of the City Walls and surroundings, but the selection of dishes is now quite limited, you can’t see what you are getting (as you used to in the cafeteria), and the quality on this occasion was not up to the previous standard. It is also a bit odd that there are three separate eating places within the same department store, the other two being Carluccio franchises.

Don't miss this one if you are in Canterbury for a shopping day. It would be so easy not to realise that this Restaurant is on the 2nd floor, you pass the ground floor Carluccio's Coffee Shop and the first floor Carluccio's restaurant. But carry on and you will n to be disappointed. We use Fenwicks restaurant when in Canterbury as there is space between tables, always a good selection of cakes, sandwiches and hot meals. Their Roast Dinners are excellent (served from 11.30), the Chef carves your meat and serves the veg too. Later in the day there is 'afternoon tea' £7.50 for two people, this has a three tier cake stand with a selection of small sandwiches, scones and cakes an is ample if you are eating at home later. All the food is fresh and looks appealing. At lunch time, particularly at this busy time of year they do get very busy, but the tables are cleared, and cleaned quickly, and the staff are always cheerful and chatty. Call in for a meal, snack or just a coffee, I am sure you won't be disappointed. Right next to the Bus Station Fenwicks is a large store, so handy for waiting for the bus to arrive, or anytime. At our last visit we both had the Special of the Day Pork Loin with Mushrooms in a Cheese sauce.

Have visited here many many times, sadly now the restaurant/ cafe really has seen better days. The previous manager and gentleman who served the carvery was always pleasant and keen to get it right, the food was good and always plenty of choice. Now, choice is limited and very repetitive , food is expensive, orders are mucked up and just not worth the money. With so much choice in Canterbury this place really needs to decide whether to have a radical change or leave the food to Carluccios a couple of floors down in the store. Sorry but would not recommend nor would I choose to go back after many many years of eating here. Must add, tables are always grubby and never cleared and I really do not believe the management are interested in what us customers have to say.

We had a voucher for carvery at £6. We had never been before. When we arrived we felt a little lost as did not know the procedure. However once we found someone to help we relaxed and went to the bar to order the carvery. We could have ordered at the table, by using a barcode, but as we are in our seventies, and not too computer savvy we went to the bar. The carvery was lovely. Beef was cooked as i like it, although as it was a new joint they brought out, it was a little fatty. The turkey was delicious. We were very happy as there were brussel sprouts and swede mix which we love. We really enjoyed the meal. The only thing we left on our plates was the beef fat. Otherwise we ate everything else on our plate.

Great location in a quiet village with garden, traditional pub food of high quality and reasonable price in an atmospheric old inn. Friendly staff. We've been a number of times over the years and it is our favourite. Only one bad experience when it was leased over a year or so ago.
