My daughter and I were gifted afternoon tea as birthday presents, and what a treat it was. The service was prompt, and attentive, and the food was delicious. Finger sandwiches, mini pastries, assorted scones and a range of cakes was washed down with unlimited tea, all perfectly prepared. Brasserie ABode is in a super location, in the heart of Canterbury, and the whole experience was absolutely splendid.

Took my mum for afternoon tea and it was lovely! Right from start to finish it was a great experience. The selection of savoury foods was great and the little quiche and sausage roll were amazingly delicious! The scones came warm and the cakes were beautifully decorated and really well made. A big thanks to Tabitha who provided exceptional service and was really nice. Overall great afternoon tea :)

Had a really lovely afternoon tea here. The service was great. The lounge area was bright and airy with a nice relaxing atmosphere. They provided us with a complimentary cocktail as well as bottomless coffee and tea. The gluten free options were delicious. Very friendly staff.

My friend and myself had afternoon tea today at the Abode Canterbury. The afternoon tea was absolutely delicious, and the service was first class. I am sorry I didn’t get the name of the waiter, he was an absolute joy, and a credit to the Abode. Informative, helpful, polite and friendly. Today such great service is a rare thing I find. He had reserved our table by the window without us requesting it. Nothing was too much trouble and despite there being quite a few tables occupied and being on his own most of the time he managed to keep everyone happy. We had the best afternoon in such a relaxing, peaceful place. You would never imagine you were in the middle of Canterbury. Thank you very much and we will definitely be returning. Five Stars easily.

Came here for afternoon tea to celebrate my birthday. The dining space was elegant and classy, with lovely wood panelling and big windows. As for the food, the afternoon tea was good but nothing special. We didn’t feel wowed by the whole experience. The sandwiches were quite standard (bread quality could have been better and it would’ve been nice to see local ingredients on the menu). Scones were quite good and appeared to be homemade. The cake selection was ok (mini Victoria sponge, chocolate brownie, and carrot cake) but nothing out of the ordinary. Tea selection was comprehensive and refillable throughout the experience. Unfortunately the customer service let the whole experience down. The member of staff serving us was quite disinterested and unwelcoming. They weren’t very attentive and trying to get their attention for more tea or water was quite challenging (despite it being a very quiet Thursday afternoon). We just felt they lacked good customer service skills and things could have been handled a lot better. Sometimes it’s the little things, like a friendly waiter or waitress, that can change a good experience into a great experience.

Initial table service excellent, waitress staff became so inattentive that had to resort to shouting across the bar to ask for clean crockery, it would appear that you're expected to eat your scones on the plate you used for chutney and savouries, with a spoon too big to fit in the Panna cotta dish. Certainly no encouragement to ask for another pot of tea, let alone more milk. Was not expecting the table next to us to be served fish and chips either, in somewhere called The Champagne Bar! Spoke to the gentleman at the Hotel reception who offered a brief apology, other than that appeared not interested. Not the treat I had invisaged for my friends 50th birthday treat.

The setting was lovely, soft music being piped in the background created a relaxing atmosphere. The staff were very attentive, polite and well presented. The choice of beverages was very varied. We were able to tweak the sandwich selection slightly due to allergies / preference. The savouries of luxury sausage rolls and mini quiche was unexpected and made for a delightful extra. The scones (both plain and fruit) were divine and served warm with clotted cream and jam. The cakes and sweet treats were heavenly, we particularly enjoyed the mini eclairs. The reception area of the hotel was clean as was the dining area.

Afternoon tea. Lovely staff, open fire and warm quiet Atmosphere to relax with friends. It’s got potential to be great, but Sadly the afternoon tea was poor. For two, it cost £57, including service charge. The cakes were ok, and plenty of them but not the best. savoury/sandwiches were really sad, and mostly inedible. Cold, hard bread for one finger with cheese spread, one hard stale like roll with poached salmon, and a bit of tortilla wrap with sandwich ham. Then a tiny tarte and cheese on toast (which was nice). Left hungry, and disappointed. I’ve eaten Many afternoon teas ranging from £15 to £80 pp, this was quite possible the most disappointing for the cost I’ve ever eaten.

Took my mum on Saturday and the young man that served us was so lovely and polite, the tea itself was a bit disappointing and the scones were very dry and hard. We had 2 gin and tonics and when paying for them as we left ( £18.50 for 2 ) slightly over priced, the lady behind the bar brassingly asked my mum " do you want your change ", how very rude to ask an 80 year old this I was mortified as my mum didn't know what to say and gave it to her, I've got to say it was very disappointing 😞

Cannot fault the food although rather pricey, can’t say the same for the venue, and the staff were very disorganised considering it was a quiet Monday afternoon and we had booked well in advance.Be aware of the 10% surcharge added to your bill automatically and to every drink ordered separately. We were a party of 6 and when I questioned if this was compulsory was told no … so asked them to remove from bill which they did.

My friends and I had booked ourselves a pre Christmas treat; afternoon tea at the Abode in Canterbury I’d never been inside but have been past it many times. I always thought it looked inviting from the outside. That was our first disappointment: despite this being 23rd December, there were hardly any decorations -or even Christmas lights. There was no obvious front of house and we were escorted to our seats by a rather overworked young waiter. There appeared to be no other waiting staff on duty. Our table was set but it seemed that little effort had been made with the settings, there was no menu or information about afternoon tea options . We ordered coffee and tea: but when it arrived, the cafetière coffee was insipid. There was no milk provided-this was on top of the bar and we had to request it. My friend and I both sent our coffees back but what returned was equally weak. And there were no tea or coffee spoons. The poor young waiter , said that the teaspoons were in the dishwasher and that he would have to ask the kitchen staff to wash some more by hand , which he duly did. By this time , we had seen enough and decided to make our exit. We told the waiter( who couldn’t have been nicer or more helpful: this was NOT his fault) and he brought the managers over to speak to us. She could not have been nicer either. We explained to her that when you’re paying £23 (and of course, we didn’t have to pay) each for an afternoon tea, you expect something better-and this was before the sandwiches -or cake had even arrived. Our experience with the coffees did not augur well ...In the end, we went elsewhere.

Booked a festive afternoon tea and the only word to describe it is... disappointing. :( A neighbouring table we’re paying and left most of their afternoon tea food which we didn’t think was a good sign! As we sat down we were offered complimentary tea and coffee. The Abode Christmas brochure states ‘specialist, selected teas or coffees’ these were not offered to us. When the tower arrived we couldn’t see what was festive about it. Usually when the afternoon tea arrives the staff will explain what each item is. This didn’t happen so we we decided to ask the waiter if it was the festive afternoon tea. We then spent 5 minutes trying to catch the attention of the 2 members of staff. (Meaning by the time we started eating the scones had gone cold!!) They checked in the kitchen and said it was, they explained the sandwiches were: salmon, cheese, ham and egg. 2 scones and cakes: carrot cake, blueberry and yoghurt wafer, chocolate orange block & clementine cheesecake. 2 cakes being orange / clementine flavoured does not make it a festive afternoon tea in my eyes! What about a mince pie? Mini Christmas pud? Turkey and stuffing sandwich? Brie and cranberry sarnie? You will see from the photographs that we simply couldn’t eat the cakes because they were just horrible/tasteless/bitter. There was no music adding to an atmosphere so the whole experience didn’t leave us feeling very festive at all! We feel we should have given this a miss and tried one of the other festive teas available (cheaper!!) in Canterbury. This review is in response to an email I have received from the hotel requesting an ‘honest review’.

Myself and a friend came for what we thought was a festive afternoon tea.. it was anything but. We arrived and were seated quickly, we were then offered tea and then was left for a while before the food arrived. When it did arrive, we were a little confused as we’d booked for it to be festive.. now having no menu on the website we were a little bit in the dark. We tried to catch the waiters attention (which took about 5 minutes) when we finally did we asked if it was in fact festive and he replied ‘I’m pretty sure’ but did go and check and when he returned informed us of what each item was. The sandwiches were soggy, the cakes were not great.. the only bonus were the scones (which were delicious!) All round this was really disappointing, we were both really looking forward to it and it was just disappointing... we also both left still hungry! I probably won’t be coming back to have tea here .. which is a shame!!!

I’ve been here before a few years ago for afternoon tea and loved it. Standards appear to have slipped significantly since then with obvious cost cutting, the service isn’t great and the sandwich feelings were non-existent. I’m not even sure what was in the sandwiches because the fillings were that sparse! I think one was smoked salmon, if it was I had no idea you could get water thin smoked salmon. The toilets weren’t clean with toilet paper on the floor and one of the locks was completely broken. For the kind of place the Abode puts itself out to be and for the prices it charges this just isn’t acceptable. There are a lot better places for afternoon tea that are far better value for money - locally and in London. My advice would be go to one of those instead.

Once to have a drink before our evening meal and later the next day, when we picked up a snack (their burger special) as an afternoon snack. Abode charge £22.50 each for Afternoon TeaThe waiter did not seem to know what he was doing, he asked if we wanted a hot drink, which of course should be a selection of teas(sometimes you can have coffee if preferred), no selection was offered, which as we were leaving another waiter did ask a group what kind of tea they wanted. He brought one pot of tea with tea bags, I was expecting loose leaf tea. We managed to get a cup and a half each, not offered a top of hot water, he gave us brown sugar, when I asked for white he did not know brown is just for coffeeCakes and sandwiches were very niceThe icing on the cake was that there was a 10% service charge, again I have had afternoon tea in many places over the UK and never been charged this, so in all came to £49.95, which I believe is very overpriced.

I went to lunch on 25 February, with two others, and initially service appeared polite and friendly; however, the experience went downhill from there. The two staff serving in the bar/lounge, which was quiet, ignored guests already seated at tables and I had to go the bar to order food. When I saw a member of staff pour two glasses of sparkling wine back into the bottle because he had poured white instead of rosé, I was appalled. Nonetheless, we continued to wait for our food and after some 30 minutes waiting for 3 simple hot sandwich meals, my elderly host went to the bar to ask where our meals were; the food that was swifly presented was cold, tough and soggy. On commenting that the sandwiches were cold to the staff, we were told that the food had been served as soon as it was ready. Overall, the experience was disappointing, not value for money, and the service and food certainly did not live up to a 4* rating. Not recommended for lunch.

Popped into Abode champagne bar for lunch (there were only two people in the actual restaurant which was a worrying indication). Table was not cleared so we cleared it ourselves. No cutlery brought, wrong meal arrived for friend. The tiny beer battered fish was served on a tray with paper under it, the tartar sauce amounted to a teaspoon full, mushy peas hard, grey and lying in the bottom of a tiny glass dish also. Chips horrible thrice fried wrecks in a metal holder. Service appallingly slow, people were complaining, we finally had to go to the bar to pay as no one bothered to see if we had finished or offered us coffee. One of the worst lunches we have ever had in Canterbury. Very expensive for such a small amount of food. Don’t go there for food, it might be ok for a glass of wine or champagne.

We ordered one vegetarian menu, the sandwiches were brought out on a separate plate, and not really nicely presented. We asked for more jam, cream and butter for the scones, but it was difficult to get anyone's attention, and we were often without tea as we couldn't find anyone to order more. When we finally got the bill, I took it up to the till to pay. The girl who took the receipt looked at it, raised her eyebrows and said ' ooh healthy' - really - was that appropriate for an upmarket hotel? Was bought an afternoon tea with champagne for for a birthday present earlier in the year and decided to use it during the run up to Christmas. The Champagne Bar is nice and we were given a choice of tables next to the windows which was great as my husband and I enjoy people watching. The waiter was attentive so no complaints there, however, we were very disappointed in the tea itself. There were just half a round of sandwiches each together with some tiny (what I can only think were) fish cakes - did not have any taste. A sausage in a blanket each and a tiny pastry thing with some cream cheese and tomato on top. The cakes were lovely as were the scones but where was the jam and cream!!! This was served in small ramekin dishes which were only a third filled. We had 2 scones each and had to literally put the jam and cream on them as you would a spread - in fact there was not enough jam and cream for one half of my scone. I have never had an afternoon tea before where you had to eek out the jam and cream. To top it all the hotel did not offer a choice of teas and what we had was made with teabags which was also a first. For an upmarket venue that charges alot for their afternoon teas I would have expected tea made with leaves and enough jam and cream to cover 4 scones adequately - sorry will not be back

So in Canterbury one lunch time and feeling like a light meal. We decided on the Champagne Bar at the ABode hotel. We have eaten here quite a few times over the years and it has been average to good. I ordered their burger, which was very nice. It tasted fresh and well seasoned. When brought to our table, along with my so-so cocktail, the waiter asked if I would like some red or brown sauce to go along with the burger. ."Yes please, some brown sauce would be very nice" I answered. The waiter nodded and slipped out of the bar for a couple of minutes. On return, he came to our table and dropped onto it three HP brown sauce sachets, as if I were ordering a cheap burger from a roadside van. What, no neat little dish of brown sauce befitting of what the ABode would have you believe is the up-market place to eat. Come on ABode, play the game. If you want to treat me like a navvy, then at least have a rusting van outside the serve up your burger and little brown sauce sachets.

The Champagne Bar is well situated by the high street, so people watching is a must, however you find yourself doing a lot of this whilst waiting for someone to serve you. We also felt that by virtue of the name it should have more of a Champagne Bar feel to it, whereas really it is just a Hotel Lounge with some Sofa's and Chairs in it - no different to any other hotel lounge bar you would go in but charging higher process for a not particularly diverse selection of Champagnes.

We booked this on-line under the illusion that we were paying £19.95 for afternoon tea for a treat for my mother-in-law. My partner was contacted a few days later to ask for a deposit which he paid. Not once was he told that due to it being Mother's day they were going to hike the price up to £25.00 per person!! Whilst the sandwiches and cakes were very nice, the scones were over cooked and more like crunchy biscuits. Our pots of tea were very late coming to the table and were very weak. We also asked for some water but that never materialised. Have to say our waiter whilst being polite seemed vague and not in any hurry. We asked for more clotted cream for the scones and we must have been given the curdled remains from the bottom of the pot. The table was too small and dirty as was the carpet underneath. All in all not impressed at all. And when my partner returned from the gents toilet he was disgusted at the state and smell of them. Would not recommend this place sorry to say and we have written to them regarding the pricing so we await their response!!

Sandwiches and cakes were good but scones were over cooked and not as good as previous afternoon teas in Kent which were a cheaper price. They had a good selection of teas which had free top ups. Service generally was good although had to wait a while for additional tea.

Booked an afternoon tea as a birthday treat for my two nieces and we had a fabulous time. Nice surrounding, lovely food and the staff were great, happily dealing with requests for different sandwich fillings due to one food allergy and one fussy eater.

Lovely Afternoon Tea, I had the Champayne and it was lovely. Lovely finger sandwiches filled with lovely things such as Egg, Salmon, Ham, cream cheese and cucumber. There were so many cakes I had to ask for a box to take some home with me.

Having been a visitor to Canterbury numerous times and frequenting here I can honestly say it has gone on a slippery slope down, service is shoddy and the "Champagne selection is average" .

While I am not adverse to paying £21 for two cocktails, I do like them delivered with style. Brought to the table on a tray, perhaps with a coaster to put beneath the glass when it is placed on the table. Last night the bartender walked across the room with a glass in each hand and put them on the table.

After a disastrous dinner at a nearby restaurant we hoped to be revived by a coffee in this attractive hotel. They can't make a coffee. A flat white should be 2 shots of coffee, full fat milk with a light froth. Not a grey watered down effort. We did send them back and explain what we wanted but to no avail. So disappointing.

This is a chief hotel in the centre of the city and ought to do better than this. We were in for a quiet hot drink and cake after shopping on a chilly February Saturday. Ignored on entering; table slowly cleared, despite numerous headless chicken staff; large handsome, tranquil room with log fire (which the staff let go out and we're too sackless to be able to relight!); hot choc lukewarm; cake passable but fridge chilled; fork eventually supplied, followed by yet more eating irons. Staff not unwilling but poorly trained and managed. This bar-lounge could be an institution in the city but is currently a missed opportunity. A pity.

We had a pre dinner drink on both the Friday and Saturday of our stay and felt the service was extremely proffesional whilst still being friendly asking about the sites we'd seen that day. A comfortable bar area and good service the bar is great whether you are staying at the Abode or not.

The afternoon tea itself was good quality but when i booked it it was 17.50 but when we got there the menu stated 19.95 so we asked for it to be changed. Also when we asked for a few more sandwichs they said there would be a charge but ive been to loads of afternoon teas and i always get asked if we want more. Also we were told if we wanted another coffee there would be a charge. Then half hour later a waitress came over and said we were aloud another coffee. Felt a bit uncomfortable after that. The coffee and food was nice though but a bit overpriced for what we got to be honest.

Very pleasant afternoon tea. Sandwiches were nice with a good selection plus very fresh. Plenty of cakes that we couldn't finish but they boxes them up without us asking and we took them home. We had champagne which just adds touch of occasion although we weren't celebrating anything. The staff were attentive and polite. The champagne bar in the Abode Canterbury is a lovely place to spend time in Worth a trip.

Nice pleasant Bar. Waiter must have been new, despite saying had booking for afternoon tea had to tell him several times that we had booked!! Did not explain to us what was included in the price. My daughter had booked this for my birthday. Tea extremely weak, sandwiches average, scones and cakes nice. Was a very chilly day and quite busy. We had quality good time together and lovely treat but....could have been bit nicer food. My daughter who is 21 is not normally fussy but only had mouthful of each cake - she wasn't too keen. Bellini excellent!!!

We booked for 3.15 afternoon tea on Christmas Eve, a treat for my visiting mother in law. We arrived early, but were seated immediately, surroundings pretty quiet for this time of day. Once we (a party of 3) ordered; one cream tea and two sparkling wine cream teas, we did not have to wait for too long for drinks and then the cream tea to arrive. The scones were warm and appeared to be fresh; this was my order. I chose not to eat my treat, but wait for all food to arrive and eat all together. 50 minutes passed before we gave in to temptation and politely asked where the rest of our order had disappeared to?

We had a great time at Abode's Champagne Bar. We ordered the champagne afternoon tea for two (vegetarian). The sandwiches were delicious, the scones were great (just the right size) and the cakes were brilliant. The champagne was superb. It was a great atmosphere in hotel and it was nice to enjoy our tea and watch everything going on. The staff were very attentive and we enjoyed v good service. We will definitely be coming back again.

Looked on their website and which indicated that their Full English Tea was fully booked so I rang up only to be told it wasn't true and they had plenty of space! So I advise always ring when you need to book a table. The tea was very well presented and was delicious, sandwiches were freshly made, scones a bit hard, our only complaint was there was so much of it that we couldn't finish all the cakes! No-one else in the Champagne bar was having High Tea, they were only sitting there having drinks, so it would have been nice to have been given a table at the window or somewhere a little more cosy as we had pre-booked instead of a small table in the middle of the room with everyone passing by. Prices were very reasonable but a 10% service charge is added which made it more expensive than advertised. Room was warm, staff attentive and friendly. The toilets were quite away down a corridor.

The room and the atmosphere was great and it was nice to either come for a drink before dinner or nightcap at end of the evening. We stayed at the abode for two nights and went the champagne bar both nights. The first night, service was slow despite being 3 servers in the room. There was a man in there with long hair who was sitting in the back who was just chatting with the servers which meant they were inattentive to all the guests in the room. It wasn't until we went back until the second night that we saw that man behind the bar being the server. It's no problem if you want to hang out there when it's your day off, but please don't distract the servers who are working. We had to keep asking or going up to the bar to speak with staff. It took a bit of the relaxation out of it.

My friend and I ordered Prosecco and nibbles. They came to our table to serve us. A good start. The Prosecco was almost room temperature so I asked for another. He came back with another bottle that was at the back of the fridge.....apparently. Still the same temperature. He put it in a champagne bucket and by the time we were ready to leave it was chilled enough to drink.

Very disappointed, ruined the experience on my mum's birthday, poor service, they booked for us a table when they didn't have space and we were left on a small coffee table in the hallway with a toddler highchair which was 3 times higher than the actual table, asked to be moved inside the bar and were left very uncomfortable there in the corner with the two small round tables. Ridiculous! The food was absolutely nothing like on the website picture, they gave one finger sandwich per person which i never saw before, very small portions and the price for all that was higher than in Central London £17.50 per person! Unbelievably expensive for such a disastrous tea and poorest service.

I visited here today with a friend for a pre-booked afternoon tea, we arrived early and as the bar was empty (there were two people who had been served) we thought we would request to have our tea early (i.e. To bring forward the booking) the staff seemed incredibly confused at this apparently abnormal request and seemed to panic, saying they would need to talk to the kitchen. We gently stated that we were more than happy to sit and have a coffee whilst we waited for our allocated slot if this couldn't be accommodated. We were not shown to a table and just decided on a random table to seat ourselves at, about 10 minutes later a waitress came to take our order but had not previously stated that we could have our food and drink early which caused some confusion. It would appear that communication is not of priority of bar/waiting training here! The friend I attended with is a manager for food service catering and was entirely confused as to how we were being served.

Was shopping with my girlfriend and decided to pop into the Abode for a cocktail. Only 6 customers in the place yet took a while to be served her there were 4 members of staff hanging around. Ordered drinks and then waited for 15 minutes for 1 cocktail and a glass of champagne. Girlfriend over heard bar staff saying 'oh how do you make this one'. You can't charge London prices for cocktails and champagne and wait that long and get the wrong champagne. Ordered a glass of Veuve for £13 a glass and clearly was not what I ordered. Enquired with the waitress who said oh no that's not Veuve! Slightly concerning that staff are not fully aware of the drinks menu. Very disappointed, will not return.

I come here quite regularly because it is central, peaceful and nice. With a residents card it is a bit cheaper too. They also give you a nice biccy with your hot drink. However, the staff are quite distant, even though they are standing a few feet away at the bar most of the time. They saunter over to serve you (if you are in the bar, if you sit outside by the piano they never come to you) and slowly make your order. And then that's it. They don't do that usual waiter thing where they visit again and ask if you'd like another, or was it okay? They leave you well alone. This could be seen as quite nice, but I personally would like them to return and ask if I want anything else. I also never see any cake on display, which might tempt me and others if it was visible. It's a chilled out place, that needs to turn the temperature up slightly.

I attended a Christmas Afternoon Tea there in a larger group. The venue is beautiful with a lot of unique art pieces. Food was nice and tasty. Tea selection was good and refilled couple of times. I selected the Bottomless option but had to approach the bar several times to get another drink - that is the only part I thought could have been better.

We had a voucher for carvery at £6. We had never been before. When we arrived we felt a little lost as did not know the procedure. However once we found someone to help we relaxed and went to the bar to order the carvery. We could have ordered at the table, by using a barcode, but as we are in our seventies, and not too computer savvy we went to the bar. The carvery was lovely. Beef was cooked as i like it, although as it was a new joint they brought out, it was a little fatty. The turkey was delicious. We were very happy as there were brussel sprouts and swede mix which we love. We really enjoyed the meal. The only thing we left on our plates was the beef fat. Otherwise we ate everything else on our plate.

Great location in a quiet village with garden, traditional pub food of high quality and reasonable price in an atmospheric old inn. Friendly staff. We've been a number of times over the years and it is our favourite. Only one bad experience when it was leased over a year or so ago.
