Definitely changed hands .not for the better .very limited menu .don't cater for dietary requirements. Only vegan thing could find was avocado. My parter vegetarian so his safe bet was a mushroom and tomato omelette. He said it tasted bland .and the little bit of salad was manky .I asked for a vegetarian sausage sandwich. Told we don't do sandwich but rolls .even though they do toast .the roll was small .cut into four I could eat in one mouthfuls.the sausage wasn't soya it was mashed up vegetables. It was vile .the drinks luke warm .cafe food but charging bistro/restaurant prices .only good thing staff were nice and pleasant

Not like it used to be. We've been several times and always had good value for money but not today. My husband had rather miserable looking fish and chips which cost £17.50 and tasted no better than they looked. My bubble and squeak was delicious ( what there was of it) but it cost £14.50 and was more like a starter than a main meal. Plenty of better places to eat in Tavistock

This was our first visit since the new chef-proprietor took over a few weeks ago and wow, what an upgrade. At the moment they only open for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays but I hope they will extend that, as it would be a great place to come for a midweek treat as well. We are both coeliac and were extremely impressed by the range of gluten free dishes available to us and the care with which they work to minimise gluten contamination risks. We ordered two starters to share, the ham hock croquettes and the crispy duck pancakes, both delicious and very unusual to find gluten free. We both had steak, a 10oz rump, and they were each cooked exactly to our liking with superb cajun fries and very more-ish toppings of Cafe de Paris butter, chimichurri and beef-fat braised onions. Superb, all of it. For dessert we again opted for the same, which was a super-generous portion of a delicate, creamy pannacotta with fresh strawberries. There is an emphasis on seasonal produce and locally sourced ingredients, which extends to the drinks menu. We were surprised and delighted to find some gluten free beers from the Stannary Brewery, which is literally within walking distance. Lovely service too. All in all a treat and one you don't have to get too dressed up for, as the vibe is casual, simple and a bit arty/jazzy. For the full three courses including drinks - and bearing in mind we both had steak which is twice the price of some other mains - it was well under £50 each. Heartily recommended and if you are gluten free you will have a lovely selection.

First visit for the very recently advertised evening meal openings. A very relaxed setting with dimmed lighting and quality background jazz and easy listening music. Service was exemplary, by both the young lady and gent working. A vast menu, with such delicious offerings. We shared the olives to start, which were gorgeous. An added bonus to this lovely cafe, is that it is fully licenced. My wife had a Plymouth G & T and I had, for the first time, the wonderful, locally produced Stannary IPA. My wife had the Roasted Vegetable Ratatouille, which looked marvellous and I had the house burger, accompanied with fries and coleslaw. It was so evident, that all the ingredients were fresh and the attention to detail in the preparation was clinical. The burger was excellent, pulled beef, lovely salad and a little bit of spice. Yummy chips and superb coleslaw. We finished with a flat white and an Americano coffee, which again, was from a local supplier and very tasty. The whole evening was a great experience in every way. Highly recommended.

Visited this cafe with friends today. Very disappointed, we all decided to have the full English breakfast. Prices have gone up and quality has very much declined. We were presented with 1 very small skinny rasher of crispy overcooked bacon, 1 sausage, home made butter beans described as baked beans, a slither of what looked like a shaving of a sausage but was described as hogs pudding! A slice of toast, no complaint, as it was toast and an over cooked fried egg. Needless to say we all decided that that was our last visit there. Sad because it used to be a good place to eat.

I have visited the Eastgate multiple times since it has reopened, and it's by far my new favourite place in Tavistock for lunch or coffee & catch-ups with friends & family. The outside area is a calm little sun trap by the river, you'd never think you were just off the high street. The menu is exciting & varied, although I have yet to try enough because I can't stop myself from always having the chicken caesar roll which is outrageously delicious and an absolute vibe with a large glass of their French rosé. Friendly & efficient young staff, great organic coffee, solid wine choices, local beer & well sourced local food whilst still being super affordable. The Eastgate is raising the bar for Tavi. From a fellow Café Manager I could not recommend this lovely place enough, and I can't wait to return to try the new evening menu!

Large group of us went for lunch. We ordered a variety from the menu including house burger, fish and chips, bruschetta, pork croquettes and bubble squeak. The food was generous in size and delicious. We ordered two kids meals and it wasn’t the usual frozen rubbish that other restaurants serve but fresh fish and butcher sausages. Staff all friendly and helpful especially with the children. Wine and beer all local and tasty. We all ate and drank everything and agreed that a second visit will definitely be happening soon. Sadly food looked too good to eat so nobody got any photos!

Having been there several times last year and been really pleased, it was not up to the previous standards. Although service was lovely, the portion sizes had decreased, as hungry cyclists, it was disappointing. The portion of chips was tiny as was the amount of humous in the baguette and no taste of chilli sauce. The salad it came with was also a tiny portion.

We have been here lots of times before so when we had a couple of hours to spare in Tavistock we popped in for a late lunch. The staff are still as lovely as ever but what a shame about the food. I am not sure what had happened to the couscous but it was in hard lumps. I told the girl who came to check that it it was weird but I was just going to eat around it. Whist eating the chicken I nearly broke a tooth on something hard that turned out to be a bone with a razor sharp point to it. The young man who came to clear our plates apologised immediately and did so again when he came back with our bill which has been reduced by a couple of pounds. He handled the situation perfectly but I am afraid I won’t be coming here again.

Having been told how great this place is we were very disappointed. Found the food to be less than average, baguette stale and the grated cheese went everywhere but is obviously cheaper to use than sliced cheese. Other meals we had were adequate. Thought soft drinks were well overpriced . The staff however were very attentive but would we go here again. Sorry it's a no.

We’ve eaten here before and it has previously been ok but this time it was a total disappointment! We came in immediately behind a man who was seated by staff whilst we were ignored completely, so we found our own table. After waiting a while it was clear that no-one was bringing us a menu and when I went to the counter I was told “we didn’t see you come in”; it can’t have been due to the invisibility of old age as the guy we followed in was also of senior years but he wasn’t ignored! The more mature member of staff who took the order was far from friendly, in fact she was positively brusque and snappy. Anyway we persevered and ordered. The fish and chips my companion had were soggy and disappointing as too was my eggs benedict with the poached eggs not perfectly formed as they should be but just an ordinary poached egg spread out on top, the muffin had obviously been frozen and then nuked in a microwave, it was tough and inedible. No-one came anywhere near us to see if the meal was ok. When I complained the only reduction was for the muffin despite the fact it ruined the meal; not quite sure how they worked that one out! But don’t worry we won’t be returning as there are plenty of other cafes in Tavistock with nice friendly staff, better service and good food!

Sadly could have been better , I had the salmon and cream cheese sandwich on white , the bread was incredible dry and not very nice at all I can't be sure but it felt like if had been frozen and defrosted but that's just a guess ? I did mention at the time but in hide sight should have sent it back , but being a diabetic I needed to eat and not the hassle , they may say I should have said something, but if you think that bread must have been touched at least three times in the making process and still got to me 🤷‍♂️ it cost nearly 9 pounds so really should have been better my partner had a salad and enjoyed it 👍

The East Gate welcomed us very professionally, with all the right proceedures in place. We managed to get a table in their beautiful garden alongside the river Tavy. Our request for cream teas was met with "I'll just check if we have any scones left"... Oh the tension! The server returned. "they've just come out of the oven, they'll be 5minutes". Looking good. My hopes were still not high though, I've had some truly awful scones in the past. Fortunately, these were not among them.... Probably the best scones I've ever had! Fresh, soft, full of fruit with generous helpings of jam and clotted cream, I may never have another cream tea again because they won't be bettered!....then again

Sausages clearly not from a frozen packet but something very clearly sourced from a butcher no doubt local. Mushrooms just great. Bacon good quality. Bread not from a packet. Plenty to choose from on the menu - and the food arrived promptly, piping hot and well presented. We will definitely be returning on our next visit to Tavistock.

Sunday lunch, with a new Christmas menu which we both had. Husband had a pate starter and the turkey roast and I had the pork roast with date pate and Lemon Posset for dessert. Outstanding flavours, beautifully presented. Very good service and we have eaten there before and always enjoyed the meals and the atmosphere.

We enjoyed our Sunday lunch at The East Gate Brasserie, there was plenty to choose from on a varied menu. The food arrive hot and very tasty. I went for the pie of the day and it was good to see a proper pie instead of a casserole with a puff pastry lid. We are looking forward to our next visit again soon.

A good friendly cafe with a decent selection of drinks and food at a fair price. Staff are very welcoming and serve you v.quickly without too much fussing over you. Furniture is well appointed with plenty of space between the tables. On a sunny day it is really nice to sit outside by the river. Would recommend this cafe to anyone visiting Tavistock. Only downside is not too much eye contact with a couple of the waitresses.

I always thought a brasserie was a french influenced evening restaurant, not a cafe which predominantly serves teas/coffees/cakes ect. The food we had was ok but nothing special. The waitress we had was very patient & friendly. Ok value for money.

I stopped at this lovely little during a cycle ride with my husband for a coffee and snack. The staff were very cheerful and friendly and helped with a gluten free selection. The homemade lemon cake was delicious and my husband had a lovely ham omlette served with salad and chips. The size of the cake slice was very good for a hungry cyclist! I would definitely revisit this café, and maybe have a full lunch as the specials choice looked must tempting.

Stopped off for a quick lunch. Easy access through outside area for those in a wheelchair like me, easy to get to tables inside and there is an easy access toilet too. Prompt waitress service, very pleasant staff. Had jacket potatoes with fillings followed by a piece of their lemon and almond cake. I’d been eyeing it up whilst eating ! Very moist and the cream filling not too sweet.

My wife and I have visited the Eastgate at least once or twice a month for years, after a dog walk on the moor or just when we’re in town shopping. It’s a pleasant and well-run place, with friendly and professional staff. The menu has a good variety of choices so whether we are looking for a light lunch, just coffee and a snack or an early dinner we know there’s something we’ll enjoy. Their scones are lovely for a cream tea and they still serve two, unlike many cafes these days. There is also a good choice of cakes.

Visited with friends last Saturday. Lovely setting sat outside in the sunshine. Nice varied menu also had a specials board. The service was quick even though they did warn us it would be a long wait. We all ate different meals from scrambled eggs and smoked salmon, to omelettes and club sandwiches. All fresh and nicely cooked my omelette was delicious. I would highly recommend a visit to this cafe by the canal.

We had a late lunch here today and sat outside by the river with a welcome umbrella for shade. The service was quick and efficient with the staff very friendly and helpful. We had a panini and and all day breakfast, both were tasty and nicely presented. I had a strawberry and raspberry parfait after which was very refreshing. We will definitely visit again when it is cooler to try out the pie, roasties and veg. Dogs can also visit and there was a bowl of water provided outside.

Paid a couple of visits to this lovely riverside cafe recently. Had the squid salad (a must try but less iceberg lettuce please) followed by a slice of lemon and almond cake (gorgeous). Next visit was a morning one and I had a momentary lapse of self control and ordered the Full English. I was certainly full afterwards! A truly awesome farmyard on a plate. Epic, and done extremely well. If you're in Tavistock, it's behind the market, right on the river. Go there. You may even see a celeb or two. We did.

We sat outside in the sun on a perfect July morning, enjoying all the beautiful flowers in boxes and hanging baskets surrounding us. It was too hot in the sun so we moved table to be in the shade. The previous customers had just left and before we realised it someone from the cafe had come and whisked away the dirty cups and plates from te table. It was service with a smile from all the staff and before long all the tables were full. We had a toasted tea cake with our coffee, perfect! Definitely will come again.
