Lovely country pub warm and welcoming, we stopped off on our way home and had 2 ploughman’s and a portion of chips. The staff were polite and friendly and told us the entertainment came for free. It was a lovely spot to stop made we wish we had a pub like that at home

Lived locally for 46 years and never realised what a great place right on the doorstep. After 2 weeks on holiday spending time locally as mother over to visit from Spain. finally found a decent NORMAL pub!!!!! Serving normal food with a wide range sandwiches, ploughman's lunch, roast dinners, salads, pies...you name it! Friendly attentive staff, superb value! Beautiful quiet garden with play area plus dog friendly 😊 Like stepping back in time before gastro pubs and huge chains where you can just be yourself and have fun. Also more formal restaurant at the back. Please support this wonderful little gem!

Popped here after meeting family at the crematorium, there were 6 of us inc a child and was met with a harsh member of staff telling us we needed to be seated in the restaurant with a child, wait a minute. Then he took over 5 mins of whispering to another lady behind the bar about moving things around which she clearly didn't want to do. At this point a lady at the bar joked with them saying there wouldn't be room for her at this rate (she clearly hadn't booked a table) and then the 2 members of staff just ignored us until we decided to leave. Our Aunt has a walking stick and cant stand for long which was more than obvious, the bar had a little area set out with tables set for dinner which were all empty. I felt it was totally rude and unhelpful when I'm certain there was room for us for an hour. We went to Bentley golf club for lunch instead which I can highly recommend and you don't need to be a member.

I visited initially to see if I wanted to hold my mother’s wake at the Eagle following her funeral at Bentleys crematorium. I found the pub cosy, clean, with a welcoming atmosphere. The function room was a good size with lots of tables and chairs, and enough space to put up a large photo montage, flowers, battery operated candles and a large picture of Mum, Bev the manager was very friendly, professional and accommodating - having catered for many wakes she was willing to adjust things to our needs. The buffet was excellent, plenty of choices, well presented, and the vegetarian food was clearly marked. Bev kept me updated on the bar bill and we were able to keep in budget for the 3 hours we were in the function room. We were a large family group aged from 9 months to 97 years and everyone commented on how good the venue was. The staff worked very hard behind the bar, yes guests had to queue up to be served at the bar when we arrived but it wasn’t a problem. There was plenty of parking and during the wake some of the local deer and fawns appeared in the rear garden to eat carrot chunks that had been put out for them, and entertained our guests. Once the majority of guests had left my partner ordered a meal of ham egg and chips (at about 8pm) and he said it was delicious. If you’re looking for a place to hold a function I can recommend The Eagle. Thank you to Bev and her team for making my Mum’s wake such a nice event - she would have loved it. What can I say apart from stay away the welcome you get is very poor the service is very poor and the food well you might of take your wife to a cafe . We spent £40 and it was terrible I had ham egg and chips and the wife had scampi and chips the cook must use the cheapest food on the market. It's a shame really with all the pubs that are closed and this one stays open . I hope this helps you go somewhere that deserves your money and appreciates your custom.

Manager needs a personality transplant, totally rude. We had booked the back room for a wake. After ordering drinks and paying for them at the bar he said (and not only to me, I heard him say a few times to different people) "you need to go back to the room" as if we weren't welcome to stay in the bar despite the pub being open. He interrupted a short conversation (not like he was waiting for ages) to bark a question that had already been communicated. No hospitality skills whatsoever, I'm surprised they are still trading. The food at £12 per head was not the best, very sloppy coleslaw, tough chicken and sandwiches that looked like they'd been made yesterday. I won't need to visit this pub ever again.

I am so disappointed in my visit with my daughter for a Sunday roast at what was once a brilliant venue for a British institution. This has to be one of, if not the worst roasts I’ve ever had the misfortune to consume. The only reason this is not a 1 star is due to our waitress who was warm and accommodating to needs of a nine year old girl. I had the roast beef and my daughter has the roast pork, I even ordered the additional cauliflower cheese To run through the the elements in turn; Beef: closer to shoe leather and clearly pre- cut and sat for some time Pork: was ok but like the beef it had clearly been cut ahead of time and left to sit and dry out Port crackling: not rendered enough and our portion was burned on one corner Roast potatoes: insipid and tasteless, the work of a cook who has either homed their skills in a care home or a hospital as they’re “denture friendly” Season veg: cabbage was over cooked and watery, Broccoli was over cooked and undercooked at the same time - my daughter’s favourite vegetable and even she couldn’t stomach it, carrot we actually ok, didn’t taste the best quality but reasonably well cooked Gravy: watery and devoid of much more than the basic level of flavour Yorkshire pudding: bland and under seasoned, not sure if it was a cook from frozen. Cauliflower cheese: best that can be said is at least no Decent cheese was wasted on this anaemic white sauce and waterlogged cauliflower, over gratinated which made it worse. Devoid of any cheese flavour Dessert we both had the apple pie with custard My daughter loved it but I can’t get past the bought in pie and cheapest of the cheap instant custard, this might please 9 year olds but didn’t make up for the rest of the meal Prices were atrocious, £3.25 for a coke and £4.50 J2O is daylight robbery! This was once a local institution but now looks ripe for Gordon ramsey’s kitchen nightmares

Go to the black horse ongar road down the road from this awful pub the food was lovely the service was lovely and much nicer atmosphere! I have added a picture of the black horse so you can see what it looks like! When waiting outside for the rest of our party, the manager come out to us 10 mins past 12, We booked a table for 12pm but due to traffic/crash in the high street some of the party were running late. He proceeded to rudely tell us that we only had 2 hours on our table and that we needed to come sit down and order, we was not informed we had a time limit when booking as we wouldn’t have booked this was a family get together which we would want 3 course meal chat and drinks after! Whilst I appreciate that on the day we was informed by other friends members that an additional couple of people would be attending which was unforeseen but when we asked if we could put a chair on the end of the table the rude manager stormed over saying aggressively that we can’t add anymore chairs to the table, then asked what WE was going to do about it not offering to help or come up with another solution. He wanted us to go so we did. Have to say that was the best choice as we went to the Black Horse on ongar road and had a fantastic meal much better than what was coming out the kitchen at the Eagle! My advice avoid this place like the plague and head to the black house a bit further along you won’t be disappointed like we was by the service and attitude from the manager at the Eagle!

If you want to go somewhere to be made to feel so uncomfortable because of bringing a Birthday cake then this is the place. After ordering 4 meals plus side ordered and drinks we were confronted by the owner (secretary) because we brought our own Birthday cake, this was so confrontational to the point it made my 8 year old daughter cry and we felt we had no choice but to leave. We didn't feel the need to tell anyone of the cake as we were the only people eating on a Monday afternoon in a beer garden. The fact that when we asked if they supplied cakes and they said no had no bearing on it, we then got told if we wanted to bring a cake then we should have told them in advance and it would have been fine, this is a total contradiction to the initial unnecessary confrontation.

VERY VERY RUDE OWNER, No idea on customer service, No idea on allergy information, staff haven't got a clue on any of there menu items. Was told off for bringing a birthday cake in (had to do something as my nephew couldn't eat anything off of their menu unless he fancied a blue light to the nearest A&E!) So, In summary, if you have allergies and want to stay alive - Don't go anywhere near this place! If you want a nice friendly welcome to a relaxed establishment - Don't go there! If you do however want to have your husbands birthday completely ruined, feel belittled for being different, fancy some business advice from the "owner" who clearly is still living in the Victorian times - then this is your place!! This is my parents local and they visit several times a week, the whole family joining them a few times a year. The food is always good and service from the restaurant staff is excellent but look out if the bar gets busy because the bar staff treat you as if they'd rather by somewhere else! It's a very popular pub with parents because of the large garden with plenty of seating. For some reason the owner refuses to make the children's area safer for them to play in, all that is required is for some shredded tyres to be installed. At the moment they fall onto earth which gets like concrete in the summer and it has been like this for a number of YEARS!I won't be bringing my grandchildren again until this is fixed!!

I'm still in disbelief at how the owner spoke to us whilst having a meal in the garden area. We are a group of parents and kids grabbing a bite to eat on the way home from a kids "friendly" football match. Suddenly, with no build up or introduction, the owner approached our table and started aggressively ranting in our faces "You People don't understand how much these umbrellas cost............(the rant went on for a few minutes and he was very aggressive)" , the crime, removing the table umbrella because it kept flying away due to the wind, which we had placed gently on the floor next to us. To top this off, the umbrella incident was an hour prior to the rant and we had just paid the food bill. That's not all! prior to this the bar staff were quite rude/agitated and also moaned why we couldn't pay with one card for a party of 3 families. Also the food wasn't that great, not bad but not great. Oh, and the beer selection was rubbish. I wonder why it was empty on a Sunday lunchtime..mmm...

We visited the pub for an early dinner as my daughter had a sleepover at the bunker. Although we arrived a bit before 6 and so had to wait outside, (which was not a problem as the kids loved playing on the playground) our order was taken while we were waiting, we were called in as soon as the food was ready (really promptly in fact) and the food was hearty, big portions and just great. Would have loved some healthier options (like a salad with quinoa and / or some exciting veggies), but overall everything was fabulous, and the staff went the extra mile for us (like putting the kids’ drink bottles on our table before we even got there, and bringing their gravy in a separate boat just in case they didn’t like their food ‘contaminated’ by it). Fabulous experience on the whole, and we’d definitely visit again!

Popped to this pub on bank holiday weekend for lunch, the good, nice front garden grass area, food was good, the bad, grumpie bar staff, garden tables dirty, in need of jet washing and painting, very slow service in bar, won't be going back.

Mid week lunch on a rainy day in February. Very quiet as you may expect on a poor day early in the new year. Good parking facilities and with garden for summer months. The menu was standard pub food, no house specials showing. The service was fine. The food was basically o.k. but nothing to entice you back.

We came here about two weeks ago and had a nice table by the window in a cosy corner. It was nicely packed with people all dining and having a good time. After making our minds up what to eat we put our order in....when it turned up we were not disappointed. Mine a Steak and Guinness Pudding mash and a dish of many vegetables was first class. My Husband, who had gammon egg chips and all the trimmings was just as pleased with his dinner. The pudding was made by the chef and you can tell it makes all the difference. We also came here at Christmas with friends they are veggies and loved the meals on offer we had the fantastic Lasagne. Staff were great, friendly and very helpful. Well done.

We called in for Sunday lunch, not wanting a full Sunday roast, the staff were lovely and welcoming, I need a gluten free meal and the Manager came out and discussed my order with me, a very assuring place that cares about people with allergies. The food was beautifully served and tasted delicious. I would recommend this place as a good place to eat

We go to this pub quite a lot. Have been to a couple of theme nights, wine tasting and a gin night, absolutely brilliant. Bev the owner is fantastic, very friendly and helpful. They are going to organise a rum night which is a must to go to, based on previous events. Huge beer garden too, when the weather is fine. Staff are also very friendly too. Definitely a place to visit and do so again and again.

This is a great spot for a meal out for a small celebration. Visited with a party of 10 for a birthday. Our party had a variety of ages/ food tastes and the Eagle's fairly typical pub menu satisfied them all.We ate in the restaurant which was light, airy and very pleasant. Service was fautless all night long. Food was all very good, all served together and hot. We had no complaints whatsoever, everyone enjoyed their meal.Warm goats cheese salad looked amazing, the steak and kidney pudding also got a big thumbs up from the recipient. Someone on another table had one of the fish & chips specials listed on a board and I would have this on a return visit. My own lamb cutlet dish from the specials menu was perfectly fine but not really 'special' (albeit to to my tastes).Deserts were all very pleasant and overall, our whole party had a very enjoyable evening.

We were lucky enough to go here on a glorious sunny day and have drinks and lunch outside of the gorgeous and well looked after garden. There is a little play area for the kids which was perfect for our son. Very attentive staff that couldn't do enough, great food and reasonably priced especially for the area!! Lots of parking facility too which was good as is quite a popular pub!

Fabulous food. Just eaten linguine with fresh crab amazing, nothing swims in lots of sauce. Very friendly staff who know their job. Eat here weekly they have a fish board which you have a choice of pan fried or battered always very fresh. Daily specials board again very nice. Sunday roast with four different meats. Nice pub garden with lots of seating with a small children's area. They also gave a dining room.

Lunch in the sun truly enjoyable. However, be warned, each visit to the bar involves the proprietor. He treats customers with a level of animosity normally reserved only for a longstanding, sworn enemy. Belligerent and obnoxious, appears to hate people and treat his plastic trays as cherished jewels. Honestly never seen or heard anything like it in a service industry. Such a shame, without him and his attitude, it's a cracking spot!

We visited without booking a table so arrived 15 mins before they opened. When we asked if we could have a table in the restaurant, the reception was quite negative and we were told to wait in the bar to see. We actually decided to eat in the bar and both ordered scampi and chips. The food was of reasonable quality and whilst we didn't order dessert there was a good choice. Maybe it was a bad day but the experience was ok but I wouldn't rush back.

A group of friends and ourselves met here for lunch, although trying to park the car was a nightmare, avoid Friday lunchtime! A selection of meals from sandwiches, lovely carved ham, prawn cocktails both said nice, a lovely looking prawn, smoked salmon, avocado salad, I was told was lovely and I opted for the skate middle, which was small but nice. As always the pub was busy, with efficient service and we all had a good time

A lovely bar with a great atmosphere. We really enjoyed the nachos and wine. However, watched the nachos delivered to the incorrect table, which were then taken back to the bar, and when I asked Jake what had happened to the order he did not admit the error. Instead, in an unapologetic manner, said the kitchen was very busy and we would have to wait. I didn’t see him smile for the duration of our visit. Other than that, a nice time
