Stayed for three nights in our campervan. Friendly welcome at reception, efficient booking in process. Surrounded by lovely views. Clean shower/toilet block. EHU, shared water tap between each two pitches. All hard standing pitches looked level. Provided with leaflet containing walks in the area. Used High Peak Trail to walk to Royal Oak. Had a meal at the Duke of York, decent food at reasonable prices. Free WiFi was good. Went to Monyash and had delicious cake at Old Smithy. Worth returning to.

Visited the pub as we were staying in the area. We came for lunch and a few drinks, then breakfast the following day. Both times we loved the pub. Lovely feeling in the pub with a wood burning fire for extra cosy feel. We had burgers and sandwiches which were so fresh and great portion size. Chips were delicious too. Breakfast was equally as fabulous freshly cooked to order, presented beautifully and again amazing portion size. Owners are lovely, friendly and helpful. Breakfast was quite busy possibly with campers from the adjoining campsite and I can see why. Cosy country pub in a beautiful location serving great food. Hoping to visit the campsite later in the year.

A place that we have passed hundreds of times, but never been in. So today we thought we would would stop off for a quick, late Sunday lunch. Time was getting on, so there weren't many in and we were pleasantly greeted and shown to a nice table opposite the roaring log burner. While not an extensive menu, there seemed to be enough choices to satisfy most people. We had a very tasty veggie curry and a vegan burger, served fairly promptly. Both just over £14, the burger was only a standard size, but unusually served with some tasty jackfruit on and a slice of vegan cheese. There were some small onion rings and a mug of nice home made chips. I know overheads are high anywhere these days, but would suggest a thicker, larger pattie, relish, slice of tomato and lettuce even if you lose the cheese. This would feel like better value for a veggie meal. Overall, a nice pub, pleasant and efficient staff, well priced drinks but slightly higher priced food. Good quality and fresh.

Booked 2 nights at this adult only, dog friendly campsite. My wife had selected the site and I made the booking online. Never like having to pay for an awning on a pitch you are already paying for, but hey hey ho. We got set up and thought we would go for a drink at the on site pub. The 'dog friendly' section being on one side of the pub. Walked in and was met with several other couples all with their doggos, and a nice chilled vibe was to be had. Drinks ordered we sat at a table with 2 other separate couples close by. Got chatting for about 15-20 mins. We all had our dogs on our knees. A lady then approached and without even, a "Hello", or "excuse me" just stood there staring and then said "Can you put your dogs on the floor please?" A little shocked we all complied, but tbh I was a little taken aback. The rules do state no dogs on the furniture, but the last time I checked my leg wasn't wooden, nor part of the furniture. I went to order another drink and asked the lady in question why I wasn't allowed my own dog on my own legs. She replied, "That other couples dog put its paws on the table, so I have to treat you all the same" Wow, we left after that drink. I can't comment on the food as the meal we planned to have there the next day didn't happen due to being made to feel rather uncomfortable with 'knee gate'. Had it been managed a little more professionally then perhaps we would have returned, but it wasn't, so we won't.

My wife and I called in fora light lunch last Friday, on the way to visit a relative in Cheshire. We have passed the pub before - almost once every month for five years , but never stopped! We fancied a quick beer and a sandwich each (one beef with salad and one ham with salad) which were both tasty and well presented. The welcome was warm-without going ''over the top'' --which so many pubs annoyingly do these days. The beer, Robinson's Trooper, was excellent and the landlady gave us a potted history of the pub's lifetime. All in all, a delightful break in our journey---and well worth a stop if you're passing by on the A515 Ashbourne - Buxton road.

We have stayed at this site a number of times now over the last few years. I’ve even stayed on my own - just me and the dog and feel so comfortable there. The site is in a great location and the facilities are good. The pub is great - really good food and drinks. The leaflet they give you with local walks on it is an excellent touch. We stayed on a Sunday night, which we haven’t done before, and hadn’t realised the pub shuts at 7. The owner could not have been more helpful and still sold us a bottle of wine to take back to our van. We also requested a specify pitch and they accommodated us. Will definitely be back a couple of times again next year.

On our second visit, there were 17 of us including children and all thoroughly enjoyed their meals. Many had desert also and again these were all well presented and really tasty. The location is great for walks and a short drive from Bakewell and Buxton. The only downfall is the noise from the road at night but that’s something that cannot be helped. It’s a bonus for a campsite to be at the back of a pub, and what a beautiful pub it is indeed! MORE AT TripAdvisor

We arrived at the campsite on a Friday early evening as 3 couples and had been allocated 3 pitches next to each other. We had wonderful views of the Derbyshire Dales and had fallen lucky with the weather. Although one of our party is a chef we had pre booked a table in the pub for our first night purely for simplicity as we not setting off until after work and would arrive around 7.30pm. The food choice is a little unadventurous but we had no real issues with the food we were served. It’s fairly simple pub grub menu and although a little expensive for what you get it was adequate and pretty much did what it said on the tin. The next day we visited Buxton and topped up with food supplies etc and we cooked at our pitch and had some fantastic food, much better than was on offer in the pub but that’s not unusual when you have a decent chef in your party. After we had eaten we decided to support the pub again and go there for a few drinks. This time there was an unusual atmosphere in the pub and it was nowhere near as busy as the night before. There was another guy in the pub who I recognised from the campsite and he introduced himself to us. He explained that his wife had gone to bed early leaving him at a lose end and asked to join us at our table. Soon it was time to order our next round of drinks and this other guy insisted that he bought us all a round of drinks and although we politely declined at first he was most insistent. After this we bought a few more rounds of drinks and before we knew it it was approaching 10.15 and there were no bar staff to be seen. I wen to to the back room where the land loads and landlady were chatting and asked if we could possibly have another round of drinks a s the lady agreed so long as we were quick. (It wasn’t until the next day that I realised that the bar is only open until 10.30 on Saturday nights.) and I thought it was odd for her to say that as I presumed like most other pubs they would be open until 11.00pm. It was my round and I was paying cash just like my other friends had done that night apart from one round that was paid for by my friend who had paid using an app on his phone. He was showing me this nee fancy app and how it could keep track on what he had spent that day when he noticed that his round was around £56.00 while mine abs the others in our party had paid £26-£28. There were variations in the drinks bought so we were happy that the rounds would be slightly different but this was unusual because it was double the price. He asked the landlady how come his round was so expensive and she said she would have to look into it the next day and ask the bar staff who had served us. We were perplexed as to how this could happen and we were discussing this at the bar when the landlady became very defensive about what had happened and her manner and demeanour changed quite quickly. At this point we had be very polite and courteous towards her and we were confused as to why she was acting so defensively and a little aggressively but we agreed to let her investigate it and come back to us. Needless to say the next day we visited a different pub within walking distance where we enjoyed better food, better service and similar prices for the meal. On the final day as we were leaving the landlady came to see us to explain her conclusion of what had happened with the “expensive” round. It transpires that the guy who joined us and bought a round did not pay for his round. Apparently he had been loud and intimidating to the young bar staff so rather than ask him for the money directly they added it to our round, after all we had drank this drinks. There was no offer of a refund or partial refund but she did apologise. Having had time to think about it this amounts to an unauthorised payment being taken from my friends card. He is not the type of person to cause a fuss about money and didn’t want to cause a scene so we decided to contact the pub via email to express our disappointment. We have sent 2 emails and waited nearly a week with no response so with regret I am forced to write this review. I have read many reviews both good and bad about this site and there does seem to be a pattern. People love the location, the facilities in the campsite are good ( although there can be a nasty smell from the toilets / shower blocks) the problems seem to arise when there is any interaction with the management. The management don’t seem very well trained in dealing with customer problems and become rather defensive and mildly aggressive. I have also read many of their replies to bad reviews on trip advisor and the same pattern seems to emerge. You work in the hospitality industry where your customer care skills can make or break someone’s hard earned holiday. It really is such a shame because this place could be so amazing with just some minor tweaks. Other establishments that we visited in the area all seemed to have very good service and make the effort to ensure we enjoyed our stay and were very welcoming. In summary we had a really good weekend but we feel very let down by the service levels we received by the management of this site and we hope that this review can help you to improve your offering to future guests

The campsite is almost a 5, and the pub a 3 so I settled on 4 overall. The food is well cooked with generous portions but very little was homemade. The starter of garlic mushrooms had a lovely sauce but with catering mushrooms. The fish cakes were not homemade, which was a shame. Great friendly service, and good value for what it is. We were amazed by the care the pub had gone to, to make this Christmas lunch special. As well as collecting the meal in a lovely wrapped Christmas box, the meal contained lots of meat, a large selection of vegetables, pigs in blankets, roast and mashed potatoes and gravy. There was a good selection of cheese and generous helpings of pudding. There were lots of little extras too such as Christmas crackers, mince pies and chocolates. I think we must have visited on an evening when covid regulations had overwhelmed the manager of the Duke of York. There were only half a dozen diners at the time we booked but the young staff, although eager to help, where clearly very new to the job to the point of not knowing anything about drinks or the menu. I received a half of stout to be told it was definitely the cider I ordered. Other tables were having similar issues. I felt sorry for them as they clearly wanted to do a good job but had had no training at all. One other table left before ordering as they were told, quit rudely, that they had to order food and drink together. I'm sure this was just a bad night; others seem to love it here. Large car park too, which is handy given the pub is a long way from anywhere. That said, it is an easy walk from the campsites in Flagg.

We booked to eat here while staying across the road at Pomeroy campsite. I am glad we did book, as the evening we ate it was quite cold and windy (typical British august weather) and it was clear that due to social distancing several people had to be turned away. As a party of 7 we were split over two tables, which was fine but meant that we had a spare seat on one of our tables - considering we had booked together surely we could have all sat together, especially when it meant another customer (an elderly older gentleman, who was clearly alone and needing to get dinner was told he had to eat outside - in a gazebo, which didn’t have heaters) The food was good and had good portions, and did offer several gluten free options (apart from desert) which for me was nice. Sadly the place did lack atmosphere and while I appreciate they are clearly following guidelines regarding Covid 19, a little more warmth from the staff would have been nice. We had to remove our own drinks and food from the trays they were brought to us on, while not really an issue a warning about a hot plate would have been nice. I can see that this is clearly a lovely pub, I just would have liked to see a little more humanity when clearly the older gentleman just wanted his dinner and a pint with his dogs. I was just about to offer our spare chair to him when he asked for his food to take away. (A good service that the pub is offering) I know that rules need to be followed, but sometimes we also need to be human and realise that some people need the human connection that they haven’t had in several months. For me, the lack of humanity when serving the older gentlemen was disappointing, if they couldn’t seat him, they should immediately have offered him a takeaway service, rather than suggesting he sit outside in a cold and windy gazebo and this is the reason for my average review.

Probably the worst eating out experience I’ve had post COVID-19. The service was so robotic and the woman serving behind the bar doesn’t acquire any level of customer service skills. If there is any issue just mention it to the owners and they are more than happy to help. Food is fantastic and the breakfasts are the best we have had. I can not give this site enough credit yes there are rules in place for Covid but all very well laid out and to help everyone feel safe and secure. We have stayed on many sites now but will always return to this one as one of the best, thanks to all the hard work of Bridget and Gary and their staff.Jan and Pete

As it was absolutely horrendous weather, what with heavy winds and rain, blowing in sheets, it meant we would not be having our usual walk and cooking at home, having made a great decision to doss for the day and dine out.As the Duke of York is up the road a couple of miles and we've dined their before, we ventured again for the Sunday carvery. In a nutshell, although we had choices to venture elsewhere, we just find the whole atmosphere, the service, the meal and the log-burner enticing. With the carvery you have the option of small or regular, and we opted the for the latter. We were the first there and got our place by the log-burner - brill! We both had a starter, although you don't really need one with the regular carvery, we just enjoy the food (and a bit greedy I suppose). I had mushroom soup (home made), and I have to say it is the best mushroom soup I've ever had, and I make my own soups - it was lovely. The wife had pat`et and I understand that was very nice.By this time other couples etc had arrived and it was getting quite busy; obviously they'd had the same ideas as us, and came in to the pub/restaurant soaked, as it was lashing it down outside in the gale. With e carvery, you had a choice of beef or turkey (you could have some of both if you chose to). I had the beef and the wife had both meets. there was selection of vegetable:- roast potatoes (yummy), mashed potatoes, red cabbage, carrots and broccoli and lovely home-made gravy. It was all absolutely lovely and we were both "stuffed". As a result we were unable to indulge in the home-made puddings, which are also recommended. To top our time there, the service from all the staff was wonderful and there was good banter and atmosphere from everyone there.A very nice time and well recommended.

We have stayed at The Duke of York on many occasions with our ‘furry kids’. The site is well maintained and an ideal location for walking. On this occasion our friends booked two pitches and was told that as it was the winter months there would be no charge for dogs or awnings. We arrived on Friday afternoon and then had a few drinks in the pub on the Friday. We saw the landlady in the pub and had a chat. No issues we had a lovely evening. On Saturday morning myself and my husband took our dogs out for a short walk before having breakfast and getting ready for going out walking for the day. As we were walking back to the caravan across the pub car park with the dogs on their leads a sudden shout came bellowing across from the back of the pub. “how many dogs have you got?” No morning, hello, excuse me just a rude shout at us. I replied we had 5 to which a response was “it’s only two per pitch” I explained that we had stayed many times before and had paid for all of the dogs and it hadn’t been as issue. The landlady shouted that it’s only two and if you come again it will only be two per pitch. Our friends don’t have dogs so in essence we were only one dog over this! This won’t be an issues as we won’t be staying here again as we didn’t appreciate being yawped at across the car park.I understand that rules are rules but it hadn’t been an issue in the past and there are ways of talking to people.

Booked a table here for 6pm last Saturday ,after a busy day arrived back at the caravan ( at the farm opposite not onsite ) around 5.30 and wandered over not really ready to eat ! Got chatting to another couple who were booked in at 8pm .... when asked to go to our table we said we weren’t quite ready to eat ,a few minutes later Bridgette came over & insisted we sat down as she had a large party booked in & needed to get our food order into the kitchen , at this point the other couple said you’re quite welcome to share our table , so we said we would wait and order later ( much to her annoyance !!! ) at 7.45 we were then asked to take our table , even tho it wasn’t booked until 8pm ! In the meantime the LARGE party of 8 had arrived & eaten so this should no longer have been an issue ! However we were made to feel uncomfortable because we weren’t at our table when we SHOULD have been !!! We promptly ordered asking for two separate bills as we were just sharing the table ! The cutlery was abruptly place on the table and our food arrived soon after .

Two seniors, on their way to Buxton stopped off for lunch. By chance we turned left in the doorway and were confronted by barking dogs...very off putting. The Duke of York is a lovely place to eat. Firstly they accept but segregate dogs into a separate dining area and the (non-dog) main dining area is lovely- traditional beams and a log fire. The menu is very reasonable and when we visited there must have been another 15 ‘specials’ available. I went for the steak pie which was huge containing lots of succulent beef- almost too much to eat and I have a large appetite! The staff are lovely- very welcoming, friendly and efficient. I only have one, small negative point and that’s that they only have a couple of real ales available on draft.

Went here for our 5 year anniversary. Won't be returning. Food is chain pub quality for a 5* price. We were shoved in a side room where you can see the kitchen yet food came cold. Mains followed the starters like almost immediately so I'm not sure how 'freshly made' food is. I ordered the burger without sauce (as I don't like blue cheese) and with being in view of kitchen could hear them moaning about my order. Followed by a member of the kitchen watching me eat it. Had our server been around this is something I'd have brought up but we didn't see anyone and being that we were hungry we ate the food. Having read other reviews I have to agree to the burger being overpriced and bland the meat dry even after adding plain mayo to it. The wine we chose was £50+ but is £24 in Waitrose. We finally saw our server again to offer us dessert however once we'd declined dessert that was it. No one came back to us, another round of drinks would've be nice but nothing. The other half had to go find someone to pay the bill. Whilst he was gone (I'm assuming it was the places accountant that was seated next to us as someone brought them a large bag of receipts which felt somewhat unprofessional) our server reappeared and stood next me only to talk to accountant. To which the person had to tell her to move so I could leave as she was blocking my way. We were never once was asked how the food was or if everything was alright. Just seemed like they'd got our money and were done with us. Not how we wanted to spend our Anniversary. £130+ wasted, money doesn't bother us when it's worth it. This wasn't. As locals to the area we'll stick to the pubs we know. If you want a fine dining experience try the Maynard because this is just an overpriced weatherspoons.
