Rose Cottage in Derbyshire Dales

All round excellence. Food is delicious every time we go. I regularly have the pie of the day and it's always faultless. Portion sizes are very generous, the hunters chicken is enormous! The atmosphere is very welcoming and the staff are fantastic, friendly and helpful.

Friendly real pub, nit modernised or featureless. It has a truly affable landlord and lively staff. The locals are friendly and welcoming. The beer is well presented. Food is beyond good, and with occasional entertainment this is a brilliant, cozy all round pub.

Hard to accurately grade as we dropped in on an afternoon in winter, only one other punter at the bar who was very friendly, as also was the barmaid.

Excellent meal and beer. Steak snd ale pie and chips were excellent. Best I’ve had. Friendly staff. Kid free pub with nice atmosphere. Highlight of the town after a long walk

Food was awful we both had steak and was ment to be rare but was so dry and tasteless. The chips tasted like dirty chip fat. It was awful. We left the food walked out and went to a chip shop.

I booked a table for 4 for 7pm We arrived at 6.45 to be told all the food had gone and nothing they could do. I was astonished they took the booking several days earlier but when we arrived no food left. Very disappointed and won’t return

Lovely pub and amazing food, staff very welcoming and all food is home made by the lovely Michelle, can she cook a steak and ale Pie? Ohhh yes!!! The best pie I’ve ever tried. Will definitely be returning, my wife had the fisherman’s pie which was also really good. Can’t recommend enough!

Lovely friendly pub, good to watch all the bike pull in and roar off. Had a fair few drinks and had a meal, whilst it was large and ok, disappointing that it-was not hot, had the curry very large portions and ok for a pub curry, but was not overly hot, which put me off. Friend had jacket pot with prawn/cheese again not hot, cheese didn’t even melt.Would return but for drinks only.

Had a day out in matlock decided to call in for lunch ordered lamb and mint burger and large steak pie after waiting 45 mins I got toasted bun with a burnt burger could not even eat it gave it to a other customers dog and he spat it out as for the pie took 10 mins to get into it because we didn't have a bloody chainsaw to get into it this meal must have been warmed up dozen times or microwaved it was that solid we left and had fish and chips up the road nice pub but you need to deliver fresh food not warmed up crap

Big portions and super tasty. Popped in for lunch- I had the prawn mayo sandwich with chips and my boyfriend had the ploughman's. The sandwich had so many prawns in thick fresh bread with salad and delicious chips. The ploughman's had two cheeses, ham, sausage roll and pork pie and was huge! Would definitely come back.

We had a sandwich and it was really good 👍🏻 fast service too. The bar staff were friendly and made us feel welcome.

It was more food than even I could eat, and I am a big bloke who loves my grub. The pastry was moist but cooked to perfection. My partner had Steak and Guinness pie. Hers was also beyond amazing. These pies are home made and you can truly tell. I doubt they have ever been near a freezer, and rightly so. I cannot rave about this enough. The new landlord is a truly jovial Liverpudlian who immediately makes you feel at ease. The bar staff are attentive and polite, Jo in particular, they help you feel local even if you are not. Granted this is not a chain 2 for a tenner pub, but despite paying a little more, it is more than excellent value for money. The beer is well kept and there is a good choice of real ale, tap beers and lagers, along with a choice of wines, spirits and yes a good tap Guinness. I live over 10 miles away but suspect I shall be a local from now on.

A must visit if you are staying in Matlock bath. Second time eating here and always such a friendly and warm welcome. Cosy environment and the food is second to none. Spent Friday night having a few drinks with my wife, met some nice and interesting people to chat to. Staff very friendly especially Jo. Went for food Saturday night and again a warm welcome from Jo and all staff. Would recommend you take some sun with you, grim weather!!!

Lovely little place. Have been here a few times now but only ever for drinks. Little on the pricy side but is to be expected based on location. Toilets are lovely and clean, which is a huge stand out factor compared to a few places surrounding.

Staying in Matlock Bath and recommended to visit by our B&B owner. Glad we did - starter & main course - both very tasty and well presented. Had the home made pie of the day - fantastic - just have an appetite because portions are generous! Local draft ale to supplement the food was also good. Service prompt, courteous and efficient. Would certainly recommend .

This pub is very well situated in the lovely little town of Matlock Bath. The staff are friendly, too. Great place to pop in for a beer if you’re in the area. However, I may have had the worst veggie burger of my life here. The buns were flat, soggy and falling appart, and the whole thing was utterly drenched in grease. Just a greasy, gloopy mess with no flavour whatsoever. Couldn’t stomach more than 2 bites, despite paying £13 for it. It was that disgusting. But my mum seemed to enjoy her jacket potato very much, though, so maybe it’s just their burgers that one should steer clear of.

Absolutely lovely! From the staff to the food, everything was perfect! 10/10! Even though we live 50 min away we will definitely become regulars

6 months pregnant and was told by a woman herself to walk all the way down to the public toilets if I needed a wee😳 Very welcoming and comforting first impression we got , not.

On the same street there are lots of cafés with ice cream or sandwiches for food. Rose Cottage offers a good alternative for hungry bellies. It's a sweet pub with pub food. What's striking immediately inside is the tables, how they are constructed. The legs from the old sewing machines are used as table legs. Why not! A good way to remind people that they existed once upon a time.

Absolutely discusting behaviour from staff/owner. I was dying for a pee and wasn’t allowed because it so happens I had my daughter with me. Can not believe the inhumanity. I wouldn’t even think about going for a drink in this place knowing now they don’t deserve it with the lack of heart they have.

My regular fish shop in Matlock, the food and service was excellent as usual.

Great little pub, traditional.. Cosy, friendly and clean.. We walked in as we needed a rest, drink and something to eat. We were greated warmly and the atmosphere was perfect. The menu looked a little pricey, but as advertised, it was fresh and home cooked and seeing the food come out, being served to neighbouring tables.. Yes please we said and we we delighted with our choices.. I had home cooked ham, 2 eggs, chips and salad, and the mrs had home made lasagna.. Delicious. Next time the Mixed grill for me as our friends had this and said it was as good as it looks and it looked lovely. A nice pint to wash it down. A gem of a place to recommend.. We will be back, great place great management and lovely staff.

The staff in this place is rude and disrespectful I nipped in yesterday and with my little girl and I didn’t see the sign that says no children! I went to the toilet with her and the bar staff glasses and blonde hair was very very rude sayinr 1 we do not allow children in this pub so don’t want her in here and 2 the toilets are for customers like hello I am a customer I will make sure not to be coming back and I’ll be telling family not to be going

What a lovely pub! We were here earlier in the week but not eating...the food going out looked fab ..so we returned yesterday to try it out! It was even better than it looked, my husband and daughter both had the homemade steak and ale...

Quirky pub with separate little rooms to dine in or just to have a drink. Got talking to another couple who were dining there, the food looked delicious so we decided to stay and eat there. The venison haunch was really good and the mustard...

Due to a mix up they weren't expecting us but they fitted us in and looked after us well. The food was lovely and massive portions, the pies were HUGE and came with potatoes and vegetables which we struggled to put a dent in. Definitely somewhere to go when you need a decent warming meal

Stopped for a pint and sandwich. Beer was very nice and the bacon and Stilton sauce sandwich was above and beyond expectation served with a few chips and fresh salad - delicious! Also lovely staff

After our visit to matlock and visiting a few pubs we found that staff were very polite UNTIL we we went to the rose cottage not only was the lady rude to us all throughout our visit one of us went to the toilet and her response was who do you think you are we said we our customers then after that asked us how lo ng we were staying as she would like to clean the table never will we go here again poor attitude from staff

Came for some late lunch on a Sunday afternoon, found a table and ordered 2 drinks, a mixed grill & a seabass at the bar. Waited for slightly longer than we deemed necessary (we both work in hospitality ourselves so understand that this happens) but...

Absolutely outstanding once again We all had something different and everyone of us couldn’t find a single fault… staff here are amazingly welcoming and friendly as always… can’t wait to go back

We stopped by for a drink at this lovely pub midweek at lunch time. It is beautiful with a welcoming atmosphere and the cleanest 'bathroom' I've ever been in! The hosts were very polite and my dog was very welcome.

Came hear after a very long, strenuous Peak District walk to find a lovely log burner and a warm welcome. We had salmon in a lemony sauce with prawns and bangers & mash in red onion gravy - both delicious. Nice puddings too. Came back...

I visited this bar on a very quiet Tuesday lunchtime, looking for somewhere to sit down for a drink with my elderly aunt. We were greeted by the land lord he was friendly enough, bought 2 pints of beer shandy and had a choice of tables both inside and out. Lovely place this with plenty of beers & ales to choose from and from what I could see, a great menu. (Did not have time to eat). The toilets are up some rather narrow and steep stairs which was okay for me, but my aunt struggled with. However, they were extremely clean and well looked after. Overall this pub is a credit to its owners. What a lovely place this would be in the summer, sitting outside and watching the world go by.

Edit: increased the star rating. we’ve been back and realised there was no price hike. I had a single gin one time and a double the other drink. Disappointed with price hike for the Saturday night of the illuminations. Been to Rose Cottage before, always for drinks. It’s a small historic tavern, one room deep, a possible reason why children aren’t allowed. We’re both bikers so go to Matlock Bath regularly. This time we decided a three night stopover was in order. Went to RC on Friday night, the next night (Saturday night is firework and illuminated boats on the river night) the same exact drinks were over £3 more. The same happened at another pub so I imagine it’s standard for this tourist event. Staff friendly and food looked good. Edited to reply to landlord. Both nights served by same older gentleman, double G&T and guest seasonal beer - black pump clip, possibly beginning with P? predator or paranormal?? Friday charged £9.80, Saturday boyfriend charged £13.50 or something close. Only realised when I went on my online banking.

Friendly and helpful staff. Expect to pay a little more than local chip shops but price is justified with the quality of the food. We will most definitely be revisiting when we come over to Matlock.

It’s a cute, cozy little pub with lots of character and plenty of gorgeous hanging baskets outside. My husband and I stopped in and were happy to find a kind and attentive member of staff who promptly took our orders. Our food arrived quite quickly and were rather large portions. They were tasty meals and left us feeling full.

This is a great pub to head for when visiting Matlock Bath, which is a very busy tourist spot where the other nearby options are mostly chippys. We visited again at the weekend whilst visiting the peaks for a few days. We turned up 15mins before they were due to open, on our bikes as it started to bucket it down.. the friendly manageress/staff allowed us to come and shelter outside whilst opening up and then placed our orders. The menu is fairly pricy if you're just looking for a quick lunch without spending a lot. We each spent around £20-25 but the food was top notch. A straight forward chilli con carne for me was great. A friend had the pricy pie of the day at £18 before drinks but it was absolutely HUGE and they said it was great. So food is great quality, just some slightly lighter and cheaper options would be good like a sandwich or toastie.

Staff welcoming, service very slow, chicken a bit dry and we didn’t get offered desserts- waited too long so went to pay- told them we were fed up waiting- they appologised and said problem with card machine? How does that stop you attending to customers??...
