Called in for lunch as we were passing, unfortunately we were too late and the restaurant was closed, but the very friendly staff directed us to the Bar where a small menu was available. We were not disappointed, good selection of Ales and the food we had was excellent. Lovely comfortable seats by a roaring fire and friendly, attentive staff were. Highly recommend.

We visited the Ashford Arms while staying nearby in a holiday cottage (hence no review on rooms) dropping by first for a drink in their comfortable snug bar, then for an evening meal; both times with our dog. Recently refurbished the hotel has a nice atmosphere with friendly staff, good food and nice selection of local ales.

It's a bug bear of mine that a table in the bar has a lap top and a notepad for one person to work but nobody is there. A table that could accommodate 4 people has been put off limits. Further more when you come for a drink to relax the last thing you want to see is someone working on a laptop. I just can't see why staff can't do work in an office rather than take up a table for four patrons. Makes no sense to me.

I cannot rate the Ashford Arms highly enough, our room was cosy and beautifully decorated with the biggest bed I’ve ever slept on!! It was also immaculately clean. The little extras in the room -tea/coffee/biscuits, bottled water and robes were all lovely touches. The concierge (I wish I had taken his name) was so knowledgeable about the area and super helpful - he answered everything I asked him with ease and nothing seemed to much trouble in fact every member of staff we interacted with were really very friendly and helpful. The food was divine! It was the nicest Sunday Roast I have had in a long time - roast beef and all the trimmings cooked to perfection. The Desserts of Bakewell Pudding and Summer Berry Pavlova were equally scrumptious!! They also served food until 7.30pm which was great and meant I didn’t have to cut my day’s sightseeing short. Breakfast the following day was full of choice - my smoked salmon and scrambled eggs and my partner’s full English were delicious and set us up for a full day of exploring the stunning Peak District. 💯

Have had weekday lunch here several times over the past 10 years and always excellent food and service in attractive surroundings. Booking recommended. Lovely outside beer garden at rear, very relaxing in fine sunny weather and just short walk to the pretty Sheep wash bridge over the river Wye. Sadly closed during and after Covid Pandemic. Now reopened and refurbished to a high standard. Restaurant very good excellent menu choices and comprehensive wine menu (but not cheap!) Good service and very pleasant surroundings in dining area and conservatory. Out door seating too. Highly recommended - advance restaurant booking advisable.

Disappointed in the homemade pie. The crust was to hard to cut, it just shattered. The amount of mash and peas ( one small dollop of each) did not last the pie so you were eating just pie. Chicken and mushroom nothing special for home made pie , had better from pie shops. Well over priced. Complained, just told well it's a home made pie!!! No discount or apology. Give this place a miss for meals.

A very wet monday night for 2 campers and a dog! We were so grateful for a lovely welcome. It was full of customers. We sat in the pergola area which was beautiful whilst the rain continued to pour down. I had the most interesting and delicious salad that I have ever been offered and added delicious cauliflower pekora. My partner had sea trout which he greatly enjoyed followed by a beautiful sweet which included mango & pomegranate, In the middle of the night we were rained out of our tent, packed up and went home! The Ashford Arms was a wonderful haven which we highly recommend. Deidre and Mike

I had high expectations for our two night stay, given mostly positive reviews. However, we had a really bad experience and won’t be returning. With very few photos available online, I booked a “junior suite” after phoning to enquire about the difference between a suite and a junior suite. I was informed that the only difference was that the suite had a bathtub in the bedroom, whereas the junior suite’s bathtub was in the bathroom. Upon entering the “junior suite” I initially thought they’d allocated us a standard room by mistake, as the room was a very small double, with nothing junior suite-ish about it?! There wasn’t anywhere to put our two cases (and no luggage racks), so we ended up having to put them on the floor and constantly clamber over them. The bathroom was large, unnecessarily so, which made us wonder why they didn’t make the room larger and the bathroom smaller? Also, the quality of the finishes in the bathroom was poor. I turned the sink tap on to have one of the knobs fall off in my hand. But the worst part of our stay was the noise! We hardly got any sleep because you could hear every single movement from the room above, plus the noise from the traffic outside was so loud. And both evenings (after 11pm) we had to go downstairs to ask them to turn the music off in the restaurant below because it was so loud in the bedroom. Apparently, this place has fairly recently been refurbished, so it’s amazing they didn’t consider the sound-proofing aspect, which is clearly none existent. For £250/night I was expecting a lot more. And I see the same room costs over £400/night later in the year??! I mean, they don’t even provide tissues! I was planning on giving my feedback upon checkout, but the member of staff dealing with us was obviously too busy to care to ask how our stay had been. My advice: come here for breakfast or a pint in the beer garden (the only positives about the place), but avoid staying here unless you have really good earplugs and low expectations.

Great food (sausages and mash, and pan-fried salmon pappardelle) and good selection of drinks. We sat in the conservatory part of the restaurant, so we had a good view outside. This was always a firm favourite of ours. We stayed the night, enjoying the location, and everything this beautiful pub has to offer. Thank goodness someone has taken time to inject a modern twist, with all its charm still in place. I'd love to stop the night again, but the price has at least doubled to approx £225, per night. We would normally fo a mid weekly visit, so if any offers or discounts for a mid weekly, please let me know. The menu looks tremendous and very exciting, Sunday lunch sounds amazing. Lovely place, efficient staff although a little unhelpful, but can’t say that about all though. Food inconsistent and not as advertised on menu, maybe chefs night off (Tuesday) had lamb burger as main which was nice but the chips were supposedly triple fried, I’d class as burnt!! Couple on next table had burgers their chips didn’t look anything like the ones I had served, when you pay high prices you expect more! I could go on but choose not to. At last the Pakistani family have left this great country pub. They have only been here a few years, but good riddance. Bring back the previous management who were here for years and were very welcoming and professional. The food and service went down hill since they left 3 or 4 years ago, what a shame that was, it went from prime steak to frozen burgers, literally. We used to love going on a weekend afternoon and had real banter with the guys that ran it but it changed and not for the better. Can someone please bring the Ashford Arms back to its former glory, fingers crossed.

I came with my parents for lunch, we weren't after anything fancy and we are local so thought we would try here. I asked for 3 ham toasties and was told they were short staffed and weren't doing hot food. I had just seen a sandwich and bowl of chips come out so I changed my order to three ham sandwiches, (nice and easy). I could see a box of "made up cobs" in clingfilm, which the staff member ferreted through and handed over the counter to me. When I said I really wanted a sandwich, she said " so you want me to make a sandwich up for you", she then said she could make me a NUTELLA sandwich!. Basil Fawlty did spring to mind at this point and we soon left and went to forest nurseries cafe down the road which was a much better experience. I did later explain to my dad that nutella was very different to ham! On a positive note the cafe is in a good location.

We hadn't planned to visit but are so glad we did. Not only does Melissa, your very hospitable host, keep an excellent range of real ales in tip top condition, but she also provides a delicious choice of food (but check their webpage for times/ days that food is available). We had one of the warm baguettes, crunchy and packed with tasty filling, and a beef "boing a boing". Great value and very enjoyable. Well worth a small detour if you are near Matlock.
