Not many places have good quality and quantity but this place has both! Great service, friendly staff and the puddings were to die for! Will definitely return.

1 out of 5 for many reasons. Incompetence. Lack of customer service. Very poor interior - the place needs a huge renovation. That’s all I will say because my last review got removed for revealing too much of the truth annoyingly.

Been lots of times fir a Sunday carvery, never had a bad one. Visited again today, the gamon and turkey were incredible. All fresh veg and home made potato's. The cheesy mash is awesome. My only gripe is you only get 2 pigs in blankets haha. The puddings are also awesome.

Terrible place. Staff were rude and made you feel like an inconvenience. The boss was called Ed, he made it very clear that he was the boss by the way he ordered everyone around. The staff looked fed up and stressed which created a terrible atmosphere. Food was ok, beef was tough and the lady on the carvery made you feel like you were being ordered through a prison queue for food. Would not go again. Place was also dirty and tables sticky.

I don't want to criticise the establishment too much. They do a good trade and were very busy when we visited. I think the main problem is that they seem disorganised which is a surprise as the family have owned this place for a very long time. The lady in charge of the carvery forgot our order and we waited patiently to be called up. She was trying to do everything at once and just got confused. It was 50 minutes in the end. She apologised profusely, but it has put us of going again to be honest.

Holy hell this has got to be the worst sunday lunch I have ever been to. We were firstly greeted a very dated decor. We sat down and waited in one of the coldest places I have ever been in. In fact it was warmer outside !! We couldn't see out the windows and when I looked around it reminded me of a soviet food kitchen…. The waitress came up to us and grunted , she had herpes I think on her face and I think she said do you want a drink or what ? But wasn't too sure as she could hardly speak to us. Then said if your here for the Cavery its one at a time ! Again feeling like we were in a soviet food camp. The women serving the turkey kept coughing she had a frog in her throat and said excuse me love Ive got a terrible cough. Do you want sausage or turkey or what I think looked like beef I wasnt sure. Help yourself to gravy she said … I couldnt find it but eventually there it was it a huge vat so I scooped brown blamanche onto my wet turkey and wet peas… Some poor women was having a birthday in there , jesus christ she looked miserable, I think I would of been if I had gone there for my birthday. Please avoid this place we have all come home and had really upset stomachs. I can only imagine what the food hygiene is like a soviet firing squad would of been less torture.

We have visited The Duck a few times over the years and have come to expect the brusque nature of the landlady. However, on our last visit it was enough to confirm we definitely don’t want to go again. I have a 16 month old who had to remain supervised in his high chair at the table while my husband and three year old went to collect their food. She moaned we didn’t all go up together and rolled her eyes when I asked for a kids plate. My husband asked our daughter what meat she would like, and before she could reply the landlady said, ‘she will have turkey, kids have the turkey’ so that was that. The second our plates were cleared the landlady stood next to me asking what we want for dessert. I replied saying we had only just finished our meal thinking she would allow us a little time to decide. But she continued to stand next to me impatiently waiting for our dessert order. We quickly ordered, feeling like naughty school kids. When one of the choices wasn’t in stock she told me ‘that’s what you get for coming so late’ (we were a 4pm sitting when it’s advertised until 5.30pm) We just felt like a nuisance for being there. We’ve had similar experiences there before but found it funny enough to return. This time was just too uncomfortable and unenjoyable and we won’t be going back again.

Upon seeing a advertisement on Facebook for an all you can eat carvey, reasonably priced, I thought I'd book for me and a friend. Big mistake.... Wish I'd of read the reviews first... First impression is the whole place is in desperate need a a refurbishment. Sticky tables. Sticky floor. Very dated. Far from a welcoming environment. So we was shown to a table, where the cutlery was placed as we sat. No decor or tablecloths. We was told to wait to be called up... never known this before at a carvery. So we patiently waited and waited. Then it was our turn... Summoned by the most rudest lady I've ever come across. Far from inviting. So we went up to the small and I mean small serving area, she asked what meat we want and then proceeded to give us an option of 1 or 2 pigs in blanket. I thought this was an all you can eat??? Anyway, in fear of riling her up anymore we just did as we was told. It was like a scene from a strict high school with an abrupt head dinner lady. She makes Mrs Trunchball look like a pussycat. The gravy is on a separate table covered over with tin foil, then there's a bowl, covered in tin foil to put the dripping ladle back in.... Next to that table is another table, you guessed it... covered in tin foil with multiple bowls of condiments. No indication of what is what!!! After we ate our carvery with fear, we was too frightened to even approach for 2nds. I did double check with a waitress if it was an all you can eat and she confirmed it was. Not one person did I see go back up for another serving. Food was ok. Very uncomfortable atmosphere. Definitely won't be returning anytime soon. Please give your staff some customer service training because its really letting you down!!

What an experience this was!!!! We sat down in the ‘conservatory’ and had a bit of a giggle but did seriously contemplate leaving. I would have gone, but hubby wanted to stay. It was pretty bad - quite cold so people were sitting with their coats on, condensation running down the walls, windows were absolutely filthy. Tables and chairs were sticky. But the chap was nice and the beer tasted good. He told us not to go to the carvery until we were called. Thank the lord we heard this instruction, and obeyed. It possibly saved our lives. We were called and stepped forward. Little did we know what a delicate path we were about to tread. My husband stepped forward and declared that he would like to have beef. Absolutely massive error. “No” she barked, it is children first “step back”. The children were quite frightened. I took it as a challenge. She was the rudest person I’ve ever encountered. She yelled the orders - only take one, there isn’t an endless supply, move to the left, don’t touch that. Incredible. Only one sausage each. She went over to check the sauces and I went for my life and took another. I was shaking with the adrenaline of the crime - but then came the mistake. The woman behind me saw me take the sausage and took another for herself and GOT CAUGHT. The serving-wench gave her an absolute roasting, which culminated in the poor woman apologising and putting the sausage back in the tray. My bad. Another unsuspecting couple stepped forward BEFORE THEY WERE CALLED. It didn’t end well for those guys. This is not the place to make that kind of error. The food was really good. Puddings were great too. Everything was obviously home made - a rare treat these days. We wanted a good lunch, and we got one. It was so good - and we had such a giggle in the process - we would actually go back. If you want a good feed and you can see the comedy in her, I’d wholly recommend it. If you’re having a bad day and/or if you don’t see the funny side in a real life Faulty Towers then don’t risk it - you’re not going to win - she will rip you up and use you for loo roll. On a slightly more serious note my 5 year old found an incredibly sharp piece of plastic in his waffle. It was a good waffle. But nobody wants that in their child’s mouth. The chap showed a glimmer of faint concern, but charged us for it anyway. One of the most memorable Sunday lunches in ages!

We read the reviews but as with everything, everyone has their own opinion. Car park was quiet on arrival but then it was 12.15. As soon as entered we were welcomed and asked if reserved and if so what name. Taken to a table and asked what drinks we’d like. Ordered drinks and asked for the carvery and told we’d be called down. When we approached the small but very well stocked counter, we asked for beef and turkey (there was pork and gammon as well) this was carved for us plus we had 2 pigs in blankets as well. We were then able to help self to all the rest of veg and accompaniments like cheese n cauliflower etc. on another table there was gravy and variety of sauces and condiments. Well on tucking in everything was piping hot and extremely tasty. Plates emptied we were asked if would like dessert by a lovely chatty lady. Hubby had the choc fudge cake with ice cream which I don’t think touched the sides as was wolfed down. I had the lemon meringue with raspberries, I was expecting a slice of lemon meringue with few raspberries on side…what I got was the most beautiful single lemon meringue with lemon curd and raspberry coulis and fresh raspberries with jug of cream. It was undoubtedly one of THE best desserts ever. Will definitely be returning

Went for Sunday carvery. When i enetered the building, i thought i was at the wrong place.. We were served by a gent who was lovely and seen us to our table. I was looking around thinking the pub was a bit scruffy but the food was coming to tables and looked good! We got called to go up to the smallest carvery bench i had ever seen but still the food looked good. The words of the woman serving, "What do you want?" When my partner asked for all 4 meats she replied "can only have 3" 😳 She then blurted "1 or 2 sausages?" He said " yeah as many as you can have" Her reply.. "well 2 then!" We felt like naughty school children at a school canteen! I only took 1 yorkshire pudding as i was scared i would get my head bitten off if i took more! We both went back to our table laughing as we couldnt believe how shocking her customer service was! After seeing the reviews on here, you would think she would up her game and at least try to be polite! Anyway.. the food was pretty good! Not sure if that was because i was starving but i enjoyed it. Just a note- the place needs a clean up and the lady serving needs some kind of customer service course! Defo doing herself no favors speaking to paying customers the way that she does.

Our first time eating at the Duck and will definitley go again. The food was very good just like a home roast. The orange bread and butter pud was the best ive tried. The pub itself is traditonal ( some may say old fashioned) But i go for good food at a reasonable price not like some if these " gastro pubs" that look beautifull but serve overpriced, mediocre food.

I read the reviews which were mixed and booked for a meal so i could make up my own mind. Food was lovely, hot and plentiful. Highlight from the starters was the goats cheese/peppers on sour dough bread and the main courses we had included a chicken burger, Madeira chicken, steak & ale pie and ‘winter warmer’ (including faggot & sausage) all good. Couldn’t find any room for a pudding! Service was good as well. It was quiet and it did make me think we do need to support our local pubs like this or we are going to lose them. So I would say please do try this place for yourself. Read the reviews but do go and then make up your own mind based on your own experience. Let’s support our local pubs, they need us now more than ever. We’ve all got used to staying at home more but we do need to support our local businesses.

We can't say that everything about The Duck at Allscott was bad although there was one member of staff in particular that made our stay very unwelcoming. It was this which is a primary reason for the 2 star review. The majority of the staff at The Duck at Allscott were lovely but the dark haired middle aged lady who served the carvery was absolutely vile towards everyone who happened to wander through the pub doors and dare to ask for food!!! She made our stay particularly uncomfortable. Upon serving the carvery to myself and my family she was repeatedly rude and aggressive towards us and treated everyone as though we were little children behaving badly. Quite honestly, she made Miss Trunchbull seem like a fairy god mother by comparison. Note to this establishment.... When you serve 'PAYING' customers you treat them with a little bit of gratitude and respect. It's really not rocket science! No one deserves to be treated the way we were spoken to by this particular member of staff. And from speaking to others we know who have eaten here, our experience is not isolated. If you don't want customers then this establishment has concocted the perfect recipe to turn people away from the doors. As for the food, the carvery was 'adequate to good' - nothing amazing but we were happy with what we received! However, the pub itself is very tired and dated inside and out and could do with some investment to make it feel more welcoming and family friendly. However, if it wasn't for the anti-customer behaviour by a particular member of the staff, I would have easily have given this pub a 3 or 4 star review. It's been hard for eateries the last 18 months and we want to support our local businesses as much as possible. But this is definitely a pub we will not be supporting again any time soon given the unwelcoming reception we received.I would not recommend this pub for eat in food! It just wasn't an enjoyable atmosphere and the attitude towards customer service is evidently not a priority. I would like to say that there were a couple of members of staff which were friendly and polite but this was heavily overshadowed by the other 'senior' staff members attitude. It's such a shame as we were highly optimistic of having a nice carvery meal out yet we left feeling deflated, angry and completely gob smacked by the huge lack of respect shown towards us. We'll definitely take our money elsewhere next time we eat out and if you have any sense, you will too!

I visited here yesterday, as a group of 6 adults, a 10 year old and and 18 month old. The food was very good. I had a chicken korma, with chips and rice and it also came with a small naan and 2 poppadums. Other meals included gammon with 2 eggs, beef rendang, seabass, steak and pizza. Everyone enjoyed their meal and there were plenty crunchy chips and veg to go with them. Now the negatives. The landlady ( assumed that was who she was) was completely void of personality or a sense of humour. There was only her and a man, who was very pleasant, serving food, the bar etc. She was very abrupt when she spoke. The 18 month old didn't want to eat his food, but having spotted a strawberry in a drink, wanted some of those, as he loves them. When we asked for a few strawberries she was very reluctant to give us any, constantly saying that she didn't have an endless supply! The 10 year old had a pizza from the children's menu, but when it came to dessert, she refused to let him have the larger strawberry sundae off the menu, saying that because he'd had a child's meal he could only have a child's dessert, yet it wasn't included in a set children's meal. She also made a sarcastic comment about not wanting to trip over and break her neck when she saw a small toy on the floor that the toddler had dropped. When i asked for my dessert without any custard she said 'what??, in an incredulous voice and pulled a face. There was also confusion about the covid system in place, or not, as the case may be. She was quite rude to someone who came to join our group for a drink, and to 2 other ladies at another table, when they went to the bar to get a drink, barking at them that it was table service only, but once her back was turned, the more pleasant male staff member actively encouraged them to go to the bar and get a drink!! They need to decide which system they are operating and stick to it.Sadly, the interior still looks as it did when I used to go there back in the 1990s!! Very dated, bare walls, a plastic table cloth, no atmosphere and a damp musty background smell that I could still smell on my clothes in the car. I have only given 2 stars rating for service due to this lady's poor attitude, but the speed and correctness of the service was very good.

Phoned the day before to try and order and were told by one of the staff to just turn up at a specific time the next day. Upon arriving and deciding on our food we were practically told off by waitress/manager (short, older woman) for not informing them of our choices (you don't order a carvery) because one of the dishes we chose was on the vegan menu... apparently ordering any dish on the veggie/vegan automatically makes you a vegan, I'm a pescatarian and there was only one fish starter dish. Waitress then proceeds to quiz me on my diet before I tell her I simply haven't chosen a meal with meat in it, I'm not a vegan. Grateful they still do takeaway, but better communication needed between members of staff, and a certain waitress/manager needs to work on her attitude and approach with customers, this is one of many complaints she's had.

The greeting is always cheery and genuine. The staff are always friendly and attentive. The food while not 'high-end' is clearly cooked really well by a chef who knows what they're doing. The portions are generous and the quality of the raw ingredients is as good as you'll find. The beer selection could be broader in my opinion however I have never had a bad pint their nor my wife a duff wine. Then comes the decoration and furnishings. Oh, all clean and in decent enough condition but, sorry, so dated. Then balance the fact that The Duck is a good, honest and proper country pub that pretends to be more or less and then consider that within 10 miles about The Duck there are many boarded up shells of what pretended to be country pubs that failed before the paint dried, sadly. So The Duck! Go eat there and support the country pub.Take your children and grandchildren before the country pub become a thing of the past.Overlook the dodgy decor and enjoy The Duck at Allscott.

Visited for my dad's birthday meal. Service was adequate but could have been better. We waited quite a while before we were called up to the carvery. The food is available in small quantities but that's because they cook it fresh as needed. There was plenty available. Great selection of vegetables but a little under cooked. All extras were included like stuffing, pigs in blankets & condiments. You could return for more food if you wanted which is good for the price £9.75! However, the meat wasn't the best quality & the meal seemed to be a bit bland. Good children's menu choice & my daughter enjoyed her meal. Desserts were well presented & lots to choose from & no complaints about the quality. We all noticed though that the pub was looking tired & dirty in places. Cobwebs & Windows looked like they hadn't been cleaned for years. Don't think we'll be rushing back but if you want a cheap & cheerful carvery then this is the place.

We first went to the Duck at Allscott on recommendation from a relative. I think similar to some other reviews we were a little wary when we arrived as the first impression externally does not reflect how good and hospitable it really is.We went mid-week the first time and it was very quiet, again because of this we didn't know quite what to expect. However the menu has a wide choice and the food was excellent. It was a nice surprise to receive a very tasty asparagus velouté before the starter, the experience was more like that of a quality restaurant. We often just opt for a main course but the starter choices we just to tempting. I don't remember now what we had to start as we have been back half a dozen times since but they have all been very good. There was a very good selection of main courses but I am always swayed by a good t-bone steak, which was perfectly cooked as requested - medium rare, one of the best I have had. My partner had what she said were the best home made faggots she had tasted. To have a desert is a struggle appetite wise but again the choices are very tempting and on the rare occasion we have managed it they have also been delicious. I can only emphasise the fact that the first impression you get from the outside is far from the reality, it is a gem of a place and the Sunday carvery is also excellent. Oh and we also left with 6 fresh duck eggs which were on sale too!My only small criticism is the one choice of Ale but then I can only manage 1 pint with all the good food anyway then have to switch to a glass of wine! Looking forward to the boxing day meal.

Visited as a table of 9 for Sunday lunch, first impressions from the outside and decor do make it appear a little shabby, however the food and service are excellent. Paying £9.95 for a Sunday carvery, it is certainly great value for money! The puddings were also delicous and generously portioned. The only thing that let the food down were the Yorkshire puddings which appeared to have been sat a while making them tasteless and dry, but the rest of the food was lovely. No sólo buena comida, pero muchos también. Went for Easter Sunday lunch, staff friendly unlike the lady serving lunch, asked how much it would cost for my grandson who is 2, was told it was free for under 3's, which was good, when my daughter went to get something for my grandson she was told it's free if u don't put to much on and if u do we would be charged for it and if my grandson didn't eat it we would we also be charged, my grandson doesn't eat much as only 2, but found her quite rude, on paying the bill I asked if my grandson could have a small Easter egg being given out to children, was told no as we didn't pay for his meal, well I'm sorry after what we had just spent in there they could of give him the pound Easter eggs they were giving outwon't be going there again.

Went for carvery on a Sunday with family, starters were very nice, but the same can't be said for the carvery, my mom had the beef which she said was very tough. The veg was cold especially Yorkshire puddings and stuffing was cold and rock hard, the mash potato was all dried up and looked like it had been sat there for days.Had better carvery's elsewhere for far less money.

We held my husband's 70th birthday celebrations at The Duck on Saturday and all our guests were commenting on how good the food was and how many choices there were. Staff were attentive and welcoming. We eat regularly at the venue and have always been pleased with the homemade food and as the restaurant is gradually being refurbished it is starting to look very smart. Bless the landlady, when some of our guests were unable to get a taxi she gave them a lift to our house even though she must have been shattered after such a busy evening - where else would you get such service? I'd recommend The Duck to anyone looking for high quality food in a friendly environment.

This pub is basic, a little downtrodden and looks like it has more potenital on the outside than you actually find inside. Staff were very pleasant and the food could have been good but the all the vegetables on the carvery were sitting in water - there really is nothing worse than soggy waterlogged vegetables - and thats a real shame because a lot of what the staff are trying to do is really good - so splash out on a gadget to keep your vegetables warm without having to give your customers a damp dinner and then we will come back.

We visited The Duck this evening with friends. It was our first time to this restaurant and it certainly won't be our last. The food was delicious, plenty to choose from and good portion sizes. The service was friendly and efficient, all of the staff were lovely and knew the menu, options and drinks. My only minor gripe was the decor in the restaurant. It was a little cold and stark, could do with some curtains at the windows and a bit of a refurb....but when we go out for a meal our two main priorities are the food and service and The Duck excelled at both! We shall return without hesitation.

I am not a fan of carveries, as the vegetables can never be as fresh as cooked to order. However, as carveries go this was ok. The turkey and beef were well-cooked and very tasty, potatoes were fine, but cabbage and carrots very watery. The only real downside was the gravy - too thick and dark even for the beef ( which I had noted on a previous visit, so took very little!) The real stars were the desserts - the best meringue I've had for a long time and excellent cheesecake.

Decided to bring family here for the Sunday carvery as had been told it was good and the fact haven't been for a few years.Upon arrival felt the outside could do with tidying up as looking a little tired and could potentially put passing trade off, when inside it was somewhat dated but the staff were very polite and helpful. When we went up to get our carvery the portion of meat was spot on and could mix different ones if you liked ( which some places won't let you do this).Cheese cake for dessert was awesome, decor aside was very pleasant.

I went to the duck for a carvery earlier this evening with my husband, my mum & my nan to celebrate what would have been my grandad's 80th birthday. We had all been to the duck numerous times before & have always enjoyed it & had a nice meal, so we thought it would be a nice place for us to go & that it might cheer us all up a bit. As we were all eating our meals I felt something in my mouth & to my disgust I pulled out a long blonde hair. I knew it wasn't one of mine as I'm a brunette & my hair was up. I spat out my food & my mum went to get a member of staff for me to talk to about it. An older lady came over & when I explained what had happened & showed her the hair she just said "well all of my staff have brown hair" I looked at her in shock as her reaction was not what I expected & told her that I was not willing to pay for my meal. She then looked at my plate & said "well you have eaten most of it" I was absolutely disgusted by her words & her attitude & couldn't believe what I was hearing! I felt like saying I'm sorry I didn't find the hair sooner before I'd eaten the majority of my dinner! What would she have done with it if I hadn't have eaten most of it? Put it back on the carvery? She reluctantly took my carvery off the bill & apologised for the hair & said with all the food being uncovered all the time it can happen, which I completely understand, but her attitude & rudeness was awful & she has no customer service skills what so ever. It's a shame because the other members of staff are lovely but she really lets the whole restaurant down. Instead of leaving feeling cheered up & happy, I left feeling even worse than I did when I first walked in. It takes a lot for me to complain & write a negative review but I am appalled at how I was spoken to today. Needless to say I will never return to the duck!

This is the first time I have been here. We went for dinner on a sunny Friday evening and were amazed at the comprehensive menu, all homecooked. I chose the Steak and Ale pie my friend went for the Much Wenlock faggot, Sausage and Black Pudding. When they arrived I couldnt believe the size of the portions, you definitely won't go home hungry!!!! The vegetables were served separately and were perfectly cooked, all fresh and seasonal. The desert menu was wonderful, was a difficult decision but I plumped for the Vanilla Pannacotta served with fresh red fruits and a delicious couli, once again a very generous portion. I will be back here again there is no doubt about that. The Staff were friendly and service was quick despite food being cooked to order,

Was looking to try somewhere new so went here based on it's reviews. First impressions weren't brilliant as it looks rather dated and a bit down at heel. However we had a very warm and friendly greeting from the gentleman behind the bar, and were shown to our table. We had a bit of a wait to have our orders taken as the man behind the bar, who was also serving in the pub bar was the only waiter taking orders, so he was kept busy and we had a bit of a wait for the food. We were brought a pre-starter of two breaded prawns and a chilli dip, which were lovely whilst we were waiting for our food. The food was suprisingly good, my husband particularly enjoyed his steak and the chips were really good, big portions and I couldn't finish mine, there was no way we could manage a dessert. The waiter that brought out the food was also very friendly and all in all we had a very good meal which was good value for money.

Made a late booking yesterday afternoon, looking for somewhere different to eat and they were able to accommodate us. Never been here before and needed to use the sat nav to find it. The pub is an old style pub with a pool table in the bar, it was not very busy when we arrived but that was great due to having a three year old with us who can be quite loud!! I was very amazed by the choice of food on offer, the menu was great, hard to choose! I had a fig and cashew nut salad for starters and had scampi for main course. There were 5 adults who all had something different and the food was superb. The service was brilliant and we felt very welcome. I would definitely visit again and recommend to others to go and try out the food. We didn't have dessert, however I saw a couple bought to other tables and they looked lovely.

Family meal out. Starters were ok, more pastry than mushrooms, though.Very generous carvery, although perhaps being near the end of service the veg were a little past their best and the meat was a bit characterless. It would have been nice for example to have a more distinct lamb flavour from that meat, where it just lacked something for me.Pudding portions huge, although lacking a bit of character for me, for example the base of the vanilla cheesecake was very, very sweet whilst there wasn't a balancing level of vanilla flavour.Overall solid, and decent value, just not really a four or above for me.

The Duck at Allscott is a nice country pub which seems to specialise in good honest home cooking but offering a varied and interesting menu. They do not do 'pub grub'; this is lovely food, freshly cooked. Unusually for today, vegetables and a choice of potatoes came included with the meals - we were not ripped off another £5.00 to £10.00 for these as happens in so many places. The welcome was warm, although I must say, the heating could have done with being turned up a bit. Choice of beers was ok, nothing great. That said, the food was freshly cooked, full of taste, plenty of it and very definitely great value.

We visited The Duck as a group of eight for my partner's birthday meal. The outside of the pub looks very welcoming and modern, but unfortunately the interior doesn't reflect that. There are net curtains but no other soft furnishings and unfortunately the restaurant area is not very welcoming at all. The decor is very stark and the tables were sticky. The standard of the carvery was acceptable with a wide range of vegetables, although not everything was available to all of our party. We were a little taken aback when, having been told by one member of staff that our under 2 would eat free, another threatened us with being charged for a child's carvery (age 3-11 £4.75) if we took too much food and the little one wasted it. On the upside, the sweets were very good and there was a children's area for little ones.Overall, The Duck would benefit from a bit of TLC and a few customer service pointers for some staff, and the carvery was more expensive than we would have expected given the overall dining experience.I would just say that if The Duck's website had provided an email address I would have sent these comments direct rather than putting them in the public domain. May be worth considering?

Just returned from Sunday lunch, nice food, reasonably priced, shame about the rest.Apart from the friendly barman, i agree with some of the previous reviews. The whole pub needs a total refurb, its so dated, yes the walls have been painted and the wall lights replaced, the tables and chairs, carpets, pictures could easily change the total appearance of the place. The toilet ( gents) are typical spit and sawdust, old hat, with an 8 inch sink, paper towels, no hand dryer. It didn't appear to be very clean. There were children running riot, manoeuvring around staff carrying hot food containers ( parents responsibilities, i know), there are even kids toys, which i believe are provided by the pub, located in the bar area, i am a parent so i do appreciate children need to be occupied but not racing around or playing havoc in a pub/restaurant area, not very health and safety consious, especially as the place was packed and very chaotic. The main reason I'm having a rant, is due to the poor customer service received from the lady on the carvery, whilst she was serving up the meat, I attempted to be friendly and sociable by conveying 'its very busy today,' the reply was, sarcastically, 'no it isn't', then followed by ' what a stupid question', I am up for a bit of banter and a joke, and i looked at her for a smile, but to no avail. She had spoilt my meal before i had plated up.I then used the stainless steel tongs provided for the roast potates which had just been replenished, they were so hot it scolded my hand slightly and i jumped, the lady observed this and quickly threw them to one side and practically threw a replacement set at me, she didn't even apologise or ask if I was ok.A smile would also go a long way, not a very good ambassador for any business.Like a previously mentioned, the food is very good, but the ambience is dire. I shall not be returning.

I have visited on a number of occasions - both on weekdays and on Sundays. It is true that the dining room is not super posh but it is friendly, clean and comfortable - just as a country pub should be. However, the food is definitely better than pub grub - their cherry duck is my favourite!. I know all staff there and they are all friendly and helpful so I just can't believe the 3 bad reviews. They don't ring true to me! I can see that the lack of posh surrounding and the lack of TV style food may not be what everyone wants but, for good quality food in a friendly atmosphere, this is a very good option.

First visit here, the staff were all friendly and helpful and made us feel welcome. The decor isn't amazing but we weren't interested in that we wanted a decent Sunday lunch and that's we got! Both went for starters which were £2 each, complete bargain as they were both very tasty. Had a choice of 4 meats in the carvary and lots of potatoes and vegetable including roast and boiled potatoes, roasted parsnip, roasted sweet potato, cheesy mash, leeks, cabbage, carrots, peas, cauliflower and broccoli. There was also Yorkshire puddings, stuffing, gravy and lots of sauces such as mint and cranberry. The meat was carved for you after that you helped yourself to as little or as much as you wanted. Even though we were both very full after all this we were tempted by the apple and rhubarb crumble which again was very good. Very impressed with our first visit here, will definitely be returning!

Sadly this pub/restaurant is now closed .I went there with my family aged 12 to 76 . The menu had very good choices of starters mains and desserts. The food was beautifully cooked. The service was excellent, friendly but not overbearing or hurried. The pub is a very clean quaint old English pub with nooks and crannies.
