Delicious food, great portions too. Drinks were good, especially cocktails. Selection of beers was good too. Staff were friendly and accommodating to our needs.

arrived and seated. twice after shortly sitting down the girl wanted to take our order. we were not ready and felt rushed. ordered starters and a main. the starters arrived and then we waited nearly an hour for our mains. the vegetables were awful. the carrots were burnt and flimsy. were given replacement, these were just as bad. 2 slices of beef were given for £18.99. the roast potatoes were not with rosemary as stated on the menu, they had no taste to them. the veg on the menu was not what was brought to us, on the dessert menu, the crumble wasnt the one the restaurant had. staff very slow. took 2 people to bring us the bill then 15 mins for the card machine. will not be coming back, bad service and not great food.

Sunday lunch wasn't hot and each item was at different temperatures. The cost is quite high compared to other local establishments so good quality HOT foot is a must.

Great food with a large selection from the menus , easy to locate, you shouldn't be disappointed with your visit

We ordered 2 meals Signature burger and Sirloin steak. The meals arrived and the plates were cold and food lukewarm. The signature meal was fair (chips were soggy, and the burger bun bottom stuck to the plate, on the plus side the burger was good quality). The sirloin steak meal was poor and my wife left 80% of the steak as it was of poor quality and not edible. We were offered a replacement steak which was not acceptable as when it would have arrived I would have finished my meal. We requested a complimentary sweet as part compensation which was provided. We have visited before on many occasions and have been pleased,however, for the price paid in excess of £41 I was extremely disappointed and would think twice before booking in future.

No beef burgers available on a Saturday night!!!!. As has been what seems for ever poor selection of ales with pathetic sign on ale taps saying " coming soon". Food was average but on plus side staff were lovely.

It was fine. It was more like a Marsdens for me. I don’t think the meal I had was worth £24.99. Maybe if it was £15,99 I would have been completely satisfied. I did order a wine during my meal which never turned up . I went because I heard good reviews off family members, but I won’t be returning ! But like I said it wasn’t terrible it was just OK!

Really disappointed, always thought highly of Vintage in pubs, and other establishments under them have been great. But it seems the Dragonfly bucks the trend. Came here on a date, after telling her it should be excellent. We were seated and drinks order taken pretty quickly, but then quickly asked what food we'd like to order, we hadn't even had a chance to look at the menu, so asked for a few minutes, after about 30 secs another staff member came over and asked the same question, to which I responded with the same, so obviously communication isn't their. I ordered lasagne, which was quite nice,my steak ordered sirloin steak, and chips. The steak was extremely fatty, with a large portion inedible, and the chips came out with a rather conspicuous thick black hair delicately resting on the top, not really the garnish you'd hope for. On top of that, the waiter who did most of the service largely just kind of mumbled at us, and was very hard to understand. Whole other Vintage Inn pubs might still be decent (the Plymouth arms is always excellent) I won't t be going back to the dragonfly, which is a shame as it's the one most local to me.

Whilst staying at the nearby Holiday Inn, we dined at The Dragonfly a few times. The food, service and overall feel of the pub was first class. Lovely, warm atmosphere and the bar staff were very friendly and efficient. The meals were first class, with a great choice to choose from. Very nice pub, which I would suggest you check out.

Visited 2 nights on the trott as was staying in hotel next door. Good good and hot and service excellent special shout out to Olivia and Kirsty (I think, sorry if I got your name wrong) but had a lovely chat on 13th Jan after rather a hectic day. Thanks for everything and will defo visit again when next in Newport.

We have been here on multiple occasions. Service staff have been great especially Caitlin. Food was quality all times not got one fault to mention.

This review is an acknowledgment of the fantastic help that I received from pub manager Jamie. A few months ago we decided to have dinner at the Dragonfly. My young niece became unwell and vomited as we pulled up in the car park. It prevented us from entering the premises however due to taking approx 30 minutes to settle her and make sure she would be safe in her car seat, it resulted in a fine issued by the parking company. I appealed the fine as far as I could but lost and was advised that although it was clear I hadn’t left the car - I was still liable to pay a 100.00 fine. I was not pleased. I contacted the pub myself and explained the situation to a very understanding and professional Jamie who advised that he would do his best to help resolve the situation. I sent in all the details and left it with him. He has contacted me this morning and I am so very grateful to him. He managed to speak directly to the company to waive the fine with just an admin fee outstanding. So happy with that!! Thank you so much Jamie - you really did your absolute best to resolve this ongoing annoying situation for me. I hugely appreciated your help - your professionalism and your kindness. You are an asset to the company. I will definitely visit soon and say hi!

Visited Dragonfly for the first time this evening and was really impressed! The food was lovely, really reasonably priced and felt like a fresh, healthier version of pub classics. The staff who served us were all really nice and engaged in conversation with my friend and I. Will definitely be coming back :)

We ordered roast pork belly and turkey (clearly reheated), the vegetables were cold, roast potatoes were burnt. The sides of mash and cauliflower cheese were acceptable. A nice place for a drink, and the staff are pleasant, but avoid the roasts on a Sunday evening, other meals have been okay on previous visits.

Ordered a sirloin steak cooked medium and it came out cold and medium rare

Brilliant service from Eileen on Wednesday. She looked after us well, regularly checking all was OK and offering extra drinks. The food was excellent, positive comments from everyone in the group.

Popped into The Dragonfly on my way back from a weekend trip in the south of Wales. My boyfriend and I were served by Hannah who was attentive throughout our meal. She was very smiley and talkative. Thank you for a lovely meal - Next time I visit Wales, we will be stopping by again.

Nice Atmostphere, friendly staff

I was going to be treated to a birthday lunch. I ordered the fish and chips, my dining companion ordered the hunters chicken. When it came my fish had more batter than fish, and the fish itself was dry. The chips were hard. The hunters chicken was also dry, it needed a sauce but none was visible. The whole experience tells me to avoid the place in future.

Too busy for the inexperienced staff. Average food.

The food was good but unfortunately the experience was not great because of my vegan order being messed up twice. I was with a group of friends and one of them is vegetarian while I am vegan. We both ordered the same main but I asked for the vegan option of the vegetarian meal on the festive menu. When it arrived mine had a Yorkshire pudding on the plate and hers did not so it was clear they had mixed up the vegetarian and vegan. When we asked the waiter about this he got confused and kept saying that the vegetarian option was the one without the Yorkshire pudding because vegetarians don’t eat dairy, which is clearly the wrong way around. I am not blaming him as an individual for making this mistake, but I think it’s important that staff are trained properly to know the difference between different dietary requirements. Then, when we ordered dessert, my friend and I once again ordered the same option but I asked for the vegan option and they arrived identical, with whipped cream on the side. This time it was a different waiter and when we asked about this he said it wasn’t put through as vegan on the system (even though I explicitly said vegan, and had already had the previous issue with the main!). Eventually it was sorted and I was given the vegan version (with vegan ice cream instead of whipped cream) but there was no apology given. I do not think this is acceptable and would expect the restaurant to take dietary requirements more seriously. While we were asked if we had any allergies, we were not asked about dietary requirements. I’d like to think allergies would be taken very seriously because a mix-up like the one we experienced for someone with an allergy could result in a fatality. Having said that, I still feel dietary requirements should be taken seriously too, as mentioned, and should be respected.

Really cosy little pub! The mac & cheese was delicious and came with garlic ciabatta. Service was quick and the staff are very friendly, even when it’s busy. Plenty of parking available, just remember to put your reg number in on the tablet by the door. Would definitely recommend to others!

Table was booked for 7.30. It was not ready as previous customers were still in situ. Waited 15 minutes to be served at the bar. One of my guests had to find the festive menus herself as we were not offered them. We eventually gave our food order at 8.20 - our starters arrived at 8.55. We ordered drinks for the table, again, the wait was unacceptable. The manageress did explain that she was 3 staff down. Some of my guests complained that their vegetables were cold. We were still eating dessert at 10.45, when last orders were called. We withheld the service charge .

Went to the Dragonfly for Christmas out with friends for a 7:30 booking, the Festive Menu was on offer, my wife is gluten intolerant and this was addressed satisfactorily by the excellent staff. We ordered 4 Turkey meals one gluten free and 1 Rib eye steak with trimmings. Drinks were ordered and served to the table, about 20 minutes after the initial order we were told there was no Turkey available would we like to order an alternative. This we did but couldn’t understand why they thought they had enough Turkey when all orders were processed on a tablet ordering system. We then waited until 9pm to get served, meanwhile a table of 4 ladies got up and left without having their meal, which in hindsight was a wise decision!! Our Meals arrived, not a good omen, I had ordered a Rib Eye steak medium cooked at £27.50 this was a steak with a dozen chips about 5 small tomatoes and some cress, my face would have indicted my dismay. Imagine my dismay and the reason for my complaint when asked if everything was OK and I said no. The steak was a tad tough, and if had administered Gas and Air and had access to CPR facilities I may have been able to resuscitate said beast as it was cooked Rare. I was asked if I wanted a replacement, taking into account the time we had waited already and wanting to return home before midnight I declined the offer. The excellent waitress refunded the meal value, my fellow diners did not complain about overcooked fish, tepid vegetarian Wellington, or tepid fish with very little vegetables. Not a place I would recommend at the moment in my current frame of mind.

Nice food but not so great service. However the manager was really lovely and more than made up for the poor service from the bar and waiting staff!

I ordered 2 meals - a dinner salad with “sticky” chicken and the fishcakes. The salad was fine, the chicken seemed just grilled but the fishcakes looked bought-in and were deep fried. At almost £34 total, it feels like they charge a lot for something that a normal pub would charge at most 20% less for. Both were tasty but I was disappointed.

Staff were super lovely. The facilities were clean and comfortable but the fish and chips were bland as was the Calamari. I just thought you should know.

We ate here two nights in a row because the food was excellent and it was very convenient for our stay in the Holiday Inn Express next door. When we arrived we were seated straight away with no problem. Staff were friendly and attentive, asked us about any food allergies and brought our drinks very quickly. Food also arrived quickly and was nicely presented. Thank you to Szymon and Jamie for making us feel welcome.

Firstly I would like to say that the staff are very friendly. However, the food was sub standard. The chips were inedible. Very overdone and devoid of any potato. The beef brisket sandwich very small and bland. The signature burger again overdone and not worth the money. A few pence less than a burger at The Grill at The Celtic Manor which was superb. To top it off my grandson was sick after having the children’s sausage and chips. Didn’t expect anything more than pub chain food but this was very poor.This place has sadly gone downhill.

I'm afraid I had a whole chilli in a pengnang chicken curry and it nearly burnt a hole in my tongue. I so love spicy food but I had to pick out the chilli in order to eat my food . I didn't think a penang curry was so hot and I think they need to tone it down a lot

It was walking distance from Tredegar House campsite, that's why we chose to go there. Weren't expecting much but we were pleasantly surprised. The food was excellent and the service was too. Would definitely go there again.

I've been here a couple of times when I stay at the hotel next door, with mixed experiences. Service is consistently pleasant enough, and the atmosphere enjoyable. I previously had the pie and was disappointed; it was very overcooked with rock hard puff pastry and the inside was rather dried up. The lamb shank on my next visit, however, was tender and delicious. The vegetables that come with each dish left a lot to be desired.

I ate here 3 nights. Everything was good on 2 nights, the other night wasn't quite as good but still ok. Most of the food was reasonable value for money. I enjoyed my macaroni cheese the most, followed by fish and chips. The chicken curry wasn't the best as the chicken was placed as a single piece on top of a vegetable curry, but the chicken was rather dry and overcooked. The baked cheesecake was my favourite desert, but the sticky toffee pudding was disappointing. The staff were friendly. Every night there were dishes on the menu that were unavailable which was a little frustrating. And 'pie of the day' was the same pie all week!

Despite a previous review whilst staying in the local area, we ate at the dragonfly and were very impressed. The service we got from Kim was extremely good and the rest of the staff were also very friendly. The food was excellent, we were so impressed we even had three courses from the main menu. I would certainly recommend the Dragonfly for a beautiful meal.

Lovely comfortable pub with a warm and welcoming feel to it. Staff were great...friendly and efficient. A group of 10 of us including 4 children were served our food all together and we didnt have to wait too long for it at all. Food was hot, well presented and very tasty, with adequate options for the children and for my plant-based diet. Overall it was a very pleasant visit and we will definitely return if in the area.

This is a nice looking pub with a great varied drinks menu and decent friendly staff and a good atmosphere. Unfortunately the quality and taste of the food has recently declined. I've tried different meals on 4 visits since August this year, and each time I've been at best very disappointed with the standard and quality of the food. Overcooked vegetables and chips, fatty meat and stale tasting bread are common occurrences. I'm not sure if the staff or chef has changed, or since July 2024, but they are either struggling with skill, staff levels, or just don't care about doing good food. If it was a case of the economics not stacking up, then charge more for the food and get in quality ingredients and cook meals to a higher standard. The chef would do well to visit The Stone House pub nearby, and try the menu there. The prices are very reasonable, but far more importantly the quality is there and the food is cooked properly and is well presented. Basically the Dragonfly doesn't stack up for food, but is a decent place for a decent week drink on the way home. It could be much better but without doing decent tasty food it'll struggle to survive in todays economic climate.

Great staff. We interacted with three staff members and all were friendly, efficient and helpful. Our waitress (the oldest of the staff that we met) was especially tolerant when I made a mess of paying the bill. The food was good pub fare. Everyone had a perfect meal.

Visited on lunch time,the staff are very friendly and helpful and nothing is to much trouble, the food arrived very quickly and was very nice.

So first of all lovely pub, atmosphere and setting. The service was friendly but it was slow, despite there being lots of staff most were walking past the table and in huddles at the bar, i.e. not taking order, not clearing table and not checking in Food was expensive, looked well presented but something was "off" with every dish for example the Italian meat pizza was just a magerita pizza with cold meats put on afterwards and was missing the rocket. The pie and mash didn't come with gravy aswell as the smallest mash portion ever and the meat had a funny twang to the taste. The lasagna had a similar twang but the garlic bread was hard and inedible. For the coat of £100 for a family of 4 I expected alot more

Sunday Lunch at The Dragonfly - Table for 7 booked at 2pm. Had Sunday Trio of Turkey, Beef & Pork Belly with all the trimmings @ £19.95. Quality of food was very good, & was hot, but felt could have had a little more meat than just one slice of turkey & beef, & a small square of pork. Marked service as 4* as we had to wait over 30 minutes for our food to come & it looked like there were only 3 waiters for what is a big restaurant.

Attempted to walk in at 12:00 for 2 people. I was informed they are “fully booked”. Photos show the pub car park at that time. And 20 minutes later. Clearly they need no customers to generate a turnover.

Very disappointed, we have been here many times over the last couple of years, it is convenient to the hotel next door, so last week we booked a family table again. This time the food was very poor, the battered fish and chip came out as breaded fish,not battered as per the menu, it was very dry and tasteless, the gammon was tough and needed a steak knife to cut. My Hunters chicken tasted nice but the side salad of lettuce was brown and rather pointless. In ALL cases the 'triple cooked chips' were just cheap out of a freezer chips, under cooked and NOT triple cooked. Avoid this place!!

Lovely staff steak and ale pie pastry delicious, flavour excellent, meat chunks far too big and we're not tender which spoilt the dish. Informed staff who said they would pass it on to chef but pies are bought in !! Chef sent massage back she would cut chunks smaller in future ?? How can you do that when you buy them in ?? Spoilt an otherwise nice meal.

Very friendly welcome by all staff, Kim behind the bar advised me on choice of beer as I was not familiar with the range on tap. His advice was excellent a perfect pint. The ambience great comfortable surroundings, restaurant service very good Arwel and Jamie we're attentive but not intrusive. Explained the menu and left us with the impression that nothing was too much trouble. Overall avery enjoyable experience

Have been to the Dragonfly a good few times for work dos and with friends, always great food and a nice cosy atmosphere. Recently forgot to register my car for parking and Jamie helped to resolve and cancel the parking ticket immediately with no hassle - thanks so much.

Summer 2023... Took friends out to lunch as a thank you. The food was delicious, hot, nicely presented and a reasonable price. Staff were very friendly and smart without being overbearing. Don't think we've ever had a bad meal here. Went out for a birthday meal October '24 Excellent meal, mushrooms in melted cheese x 2, Sea bass with crispy potatoes, peas, broad beans and broccoli, Steak, chips and salad, 2 X apple and blackberry crumble and custard (forgot to photograph). Yummy. Meal was well presented, hot and filling. Staff very friendly.

Expensive; friendly service but average food. Ordered prawn cocktail starter and a main and the main came before the starter. When the prawn cocktail arrived it looked like it had been prepared hours (or maybe days) earlier - browning avocado, dry lettuce, stale bricks of bread and 7 or 8 sorry-looking prawns with almost no sauce... just awful. As it was a work group (leaving lunch for a colleague) and I wasn't paying I didn't make a fuss, but if it had been coming out of my wallet I wouldn't have let it pass..

Went here with colleagues recently and it will be the last - gone completely downhill. I ordered a steak. It all arrived barely warm, along with the chips and peppercorn sauce. The 'roasted vine cherry tomatoes' were just a few tomatoes from the fridge, completely cold, surrounded by some wilted and sad looking garnish. Steak was overcooked. Not surprised it only has a 3/5 on Trip Advisor. It's pub grub - nobody expects Michelin star, but at least get the basics right.

Cold sloppy overpriced food the only good thing about this place is the staff… Overcooked tepid veg stuff missing of the plate most desserts not available. Just lovely staff

We have visited the dragonfly before and always had a pleasant experience but this week's visit didn't quite hit the mark unfortunately- our drinks order took nearly 20 mins to turn up but 1 drink was missing- our food order turned up with sides missing- after a few mins I tried to get a waiters attention but by the time I did my very small plate of food was nearly gone so ended up cancelling the sides. The food its self was just OK- not great but OK- some of my chips were uncooked but burnt looking and cold and the 10oz rib eye steak, although tasted nice was smaller than an average burger - when the bill came the 40% discount code I had told the waiter about had not been discounted and the sides that hadn't turned up were still on the bill- I left the dragonfly fly a bit underwhelmed, still hungry and £50+ lighter
