The Dragonfly in Newport

Firstly I would like to say that the staff are very friendly. However, the food was sub standard. The chips were inedible. Very overdone and devoid of any potato. The beef brisket sandwich very small and bland. The signature burger again overdone and not worth the money. A few pence less than a burger at The Grill at The Celtic Manor which was superb. To top it off my grandson was sick after having the children’s sausage and chips. Didn’t expect anything more than pub chain food but this was very poor.This place has sadly gone downhill.

I'm afraid I had a whole chilli in a pengnang chicken curry and it nearly burnt a hole in my tongue. I so love spicy food but I had to pick out the chilli in order to eat my food . I didn't think a penang curry was so hot and I think they need to tone it down a lot

It was walking distance from Tredegar House campsite, that's why we chose to go there. Weren't expecting much but we were pleasantly surprised. The food was excellent and the service was too. Would definitely go there again.

I've been here a couple of times when I stay at the hotel next door, with mixed experiences. Service is consistently pleasant enough, and the atmosphere enjoyable. I previously had the pie and was disappointed; it was very overcooked with rock hard puff pastry and the inside was rather dried up. The lamb shank on my next visit, however, was tender and delicious. The vegetables that come with each dish left a lot to be desired.

I ate here 3 nights. Everything was good on 2 nights, the other night wasn't quite as good but still ok. Most of the food was reasonable value for money. I enjoyed my macaroni cheese the most, followed by fish and chips. The chicken curry wasn't the best as the chicken was placed as a single piece on top of a vegetable curry, but the chicken was rather dry and overcooked. The baked cheesecake was my favourite desert, but the sticky toffee pudding was disappointing. The staff were friendly. Every night there were dishes on the menu that were unavailable which was a little frustrating. And 'pie of the day' was the same pie all week!

Just wanted to say what a great service we get from here, A special mention to the Bartender Barry. Barry you are always happy and smiling,friendly and nothing is too much for you. Always making our visit warm and welcoming. Barry you are an Asset to the Dragon Fly x Thanks x

Despite a previous review whilst staying in the local area, we ate at the dragonfly and were very impressed. The service we got from Kim was extremely good and the rest of the staff were also very friendly. The food was excellent, we were so impressed we even had three courses from the main menu. I would certainly recommend the Dragonfly for a beautiful meal.

Lovely comfortable pub with a warm and welcoming feel to it. Staff were great...friendly and efficient. A group of 10 of us including 4 children were served our food all together and we didnt have to wait too long for it at all. Food was hot, well presented and very tasty, with adequate options for the children and for my plant-based diet. Overall it was a very pleasant visit and we will definitely return if in the area.

This is a nice looking pub with a great varied drinks menu and decent friendly staff and a good atmosphere. Unfortunately the quality and taste of the food has recently declined. I've tried different meals on 4 visits since August this year, and each time I've been at best very disappointed with the standard and quality of the food. Overcooked vegetables and chips, fatty meat and stale tasting bread are common occurrences. I'm not sure if the staff or chef has changed, or since July 2024, but they are either struggling with skill, staff levels, or just don't care about doing good food. If it was a case of the economics not stacking up, then charge more for the food and get in quality ingredients and cook meals to a higher standard. The chef would do well to visit The Stone House pub nearby, and try the menu there. The prices are very reasonable, but far more importantly the quality is there and the food is cooked properly and is well presented. Basically the Dragonfly doesn't stack up for food, but is a decent place for a decent week drink on the way home. It could be much better but without doing decent tasty food it'll struggle to survive in todays economic climate.

Great staff. We interacted with three staff members and all were friendly, efficient and helpful. Our waitress (the oldest of the staff that we met) was especially tolerant when I made a mess of paying the bill. The food was good pub fare. Everyone had a perfect meal.

Nice and relaxed place, staff polite and good service. Food OK steak OK but with no sides / plain with meals apart from a sauce and 2 small tomatoes hardly worth bothering with..

Visited on lunch time,the staff are very friendly and helpful and nothing is to much trouble, the food arrived very quickly and was very nice.

So first of all lovely pub, atmosphere and setting. The service was friendly but it was slow, despite there being lots of staff most were walking past the table and in huddles at the bar, i.e. not taking order, not clearing table and not checking in Food was expensive, looked well presented but something was "off" with every dish for example the Italian meat pizza was just a magerita pizza with cold meats put on afterwards and was missing the rocket. The pie and mash didn't come with gravy aswell as the smallest mash portion ever and the meat had a funny twang to the taste. The lasagna had a similar twang but the garlic bread was hard and inedible. For the coat of £100 for a family of 4 I expected alot more

Sunday Lunch at The Dragonfly - Table for 7 booked at 2pm. Had Sunday Trio of Turkey, Beef & Pork Belly with all the trimmings @ £19.95. Quality of food was very good, & was hot, but felt could have had a little more meat than just one slice of turkey & beef, & a small square of pork. Marked service as 4* as we had to wait over 30 minutes for our food to come & it looked like there were only 3 waiters for what is a big restaurant.

Attempted to walk in at 12:00 for 2 people. I was informed they are “fully booked”. Photos show the pub car park at that time. And 20 minutes later. Clearly they need no customers to generate a turnover.

Very friendly welcome by all staff, Kim behind the bar advised me on choice of beer as I was not familiar with the range on tap. His advice was excellent a perfect pint. The ambience great comfortable surroundings, restaurant service very good Arwel and Jamie we're attentive but not intrusive. Explained the menu and left us with the impression that nothing was too much trouble. Overall avery enjoyable experience

Very disappointed, we have been here many times over the last couple of years, it is convenient to the hotel next door, so last week we booked a family table again. This time the food was very poor, the battered fish and chip came out as breaded fish,not battered as per the menu, it was very dry and tasteless, the gammon was tough and needed a steak knife to cut. My Hunters chicken tasted nice but the side salad of lettuce was brown and rather pointless. In ALL cases the 'triple cooked chips' were just cheap out of a freezer chips, under cooked and NOT triple cooked. Avoid this place!!

Lovely staff steak and ale pie pastry delicious, flavour excellent, meat chunks far too big and we're not tender which spoilt the dish. Informed staff who said they would pass it on to chef but pies are bought in !! Chef sent massage back she would cut chunks smaller in future ?? How can you do that when you buy them in ?? Spoilt an otherwise nice meal.

Have been to the Dragonfly a good few times for work dos and with friends, always great food and a nice cosy atmosphere. Recently forgot to register my car for parking and Jamie helped to resolve and cancel the parking ticket immediately with no hassle - thanks so much.

Summer 2023... Took friends out to lunch as a thank you. The food was delicious, hot, nicely presented and a reasonable price. Staff were very friendly and smart without being overbearing. Don't think we've ever had a bad meal here. Went out for a birthday meal October '24 Excellent meal, mushrooms in melted cheese x 2, Sea bass with crispy potatoes, peas, broad beans and broccoli, Steak, chips and salad, 2 X apple and blackberry crumble and custard (forgot to photograph). Yummy. Meal was well presented, hot and filling. Staff very friendly.

Expensive; friendly service but average food. Ordered prawn cocktail starter and a main and the main came before the starter. When the prawn cocktail arrived it looked like it had been prepared hours (or maybe days) earlier - browning avocado, dry lettuce, stale bricks of bread and 7 or 8 sorry-looking prawns with almost no sauce... just awful. As it was a work group (leaving lunch for a colleague) and I wasn't paying I didn't make a fuss, but if it had been coming out of my wallet I wouldn't have let it pass..

Had a very nice roast dinner - good portions and perfectly cooked meat and vegetables. Service was very quick and staff were very attentive.

Went here with colleagues recently and it will be the last - gone completely downhill. I ordered a steak. It all arrived barely warm, along with the chips and peppercorn sauce. The 'roasted vine cherry tomatoes' were just a few tomatoes from the fridge, completely cold, surrounded by some wilted and sad looking garnish. Steak was overcooked. Not surprised it only has a 3/5 on Trip Advisor. It's pub grub - nobody expects Michelin star, but at least get the basics right.

Brilliant service from Barrie and Neil. Such a shame Neil is leaving to pastures new, he will be missed! They looked after us well, regularly checking all was OK and offering extra drinks. The food was excellent, positive comments from everyone in the group, so thanks to the chefs, Arwel and Rhys.

Cold sloppy overpriced food the only good thing about this place is the staff… Overcooked tepid veg stuff missing of the plate most desserts not available. Just lovely staff

Excellent service friendly staff

We have visited the dragonfly before and always had a pleasant experience but this week's visit didn't quite hit the mark unfortunately- our drinks order took nearly 20 mins to turn up but 1 drink was missing- our food order turned up with sides missing- after a few mins I tried to get a waiters attention but by the time I did my very small plate of food was nearly gone so ended up cancelling the sides. The food its self was just OK- not great but OK- some of my chips were uncooked but burnt looking and cold and the 10oz rib eye steak, although tasted nice was smaller than an average burger - when the bill came the 40% discount code I had told the waiter about had not been discounted and the sides that hadn't turned up were still on the bill- I left the dragonfly fly a bit underwhelmed, still hungry and £50+ lighter

We were so disappointed and frustrated. We walked to the Dragon Fly around 18:00 on Friday and my husband and I asked for a table for 2. First, they said that they will manage a table for us but after a quick conversation with another guy he came to us and said that they didn’t have a table available even though we saw many tables empty. We got out of the restaurant and we tried to book a table on dragonfly’s website. To our suprisse we got a reservation for the same day, at 08:00pm. However, we decided not to return to the restaurant because we felt very bad about this situation due to the fact that we do not have a British name and appearance, as mentioned in another review (photo attached).

First time I've been to the dragonfly quaint pub very relaxed atmosphere and service very good staff very friendly enjoyed the food had battered haddock with triple cooked chips and mushy peas with side serving of Tartar sauce 😋 was really tasty nice and piping hot lovely crispy batter on fish portions very generous you get alot for your money would definitely go there again and would recommend

My family and I visit on special occasions! The menu is creative, with tasty and delicious foods. Staff are attentive and friendly! Great atmosphere (especially in the warm weather), plenty of space in the front garden. family friendly and dog friendly!

I would have to say I give the service 5 stars. The young gentleman that served us was very helpful. My chicken schnitzel and chips arrived with (HOT) 😃👍 I did ask for no barbecue sauce as I don't like it. So I ordered pepper sauce to go in separate pot as I thought it might be dry... But I have to say it didn't need it. With all the cheese on top kept it moist. 👍😋 Well done 👍 So I have to say a big improvement on the food compared to the last time I went... When I gave the service five star and the food two stars. This time I have to say I can give five star for service and 5 star for food. 👍😋

Nice food but put off my visit by people vaping in the restaurant

I heard good things, but disappointed. I ordered the chicken, bacon, avocado salad. It came with no bacon, no avocado and the chicken was quite dry. When I asked for this to be addressed, the wait staff acted like they were doing me a favour by adding "more" Bacon and claimed the avocado was mixed in. I wouldn't have minded but that was completely untrue. Hope everyone else has a better experience.

I don't often leave negative reviews. Practically empty pub when we walked. But suddenly they were not open to walk ins, very chilly reception. Tables available online to book though. Guess only open to walk ins unless you have an English accent.

Met a friend here for lunch as it’s half way between our homes. There were only two staff on managing the tables and bar between them; they were friendly and smiley throughout. Our food was delicious, green salad with chicken and steak sandwich, followed by banoffee profiterole and mango Eton mess delicious.

The worst steak sandwich ever, if you can call it that. Thick bread, dry, cold steak strip, green of some sort and onion relish. The only decent thing was fresh chip. Most disappointed

Lovely food, fish and chips were gorgeous. Nice staff and atmosphere, unfortunately i think however £9.90 for a glass of sauvignon blanc on the outskirts of Newport is a tad on the pricey side.

Waited 45 minutes for food to arrive over cooked and missing items. Told the kitchen was busy while the place is barely 1/4 full. Staff attitude was shocking! Never coming back

They are very picky if you don't have reservation even they have thousands of tables free. So set a table before you go.

Only had a couple of shandies in the sun, nice selection of beers though. Plenty of outside space and dog friendly.

Wonderful meal to celebrate our 29th anniversary! Thankyou to Kim and Tiegan for such amazing service. The haddock fishcakes and seabass were fantastic, as was the mango eton mess.

Fairly expensive for what it is. Food was okay not amazing. Food took ages to come out 45mins for starters to arrive was bad when we had a 2 year old waiting for food too (fortunately we brought snacks with us to keep her happy until food arrived). Server didn’t check on us once and was surprised when we pulled her aside and said we hadn’t received her food. We spoke to manager after meal and he obviously didn’t care and took the receipt off the table as we were talking about our issues and was starting to walk away, did knock £15 off total but it was a £145 bill for four people for two courses. online bookings said tables were fully booked but restaurant was basically empty. Tried to go back two days later and they said they couldn’t seat us as kitchen was understaffed. Overall the food is fairly nice, and I’m sure if they were fully staffed the experience would be fine but it was just a bit disappointing this time round.

The one star goes solely towards the long term, dedicated staff who have proven themselves year after year to be hardworking, loyal and adaptable, BUT that is where the good points end. The revolving door of Managers over the last few years has had a detrimental effect on what used to be a seriously good pub for both food and drink! The last Manager, I never even saw. By all accounts he lasted about a month, but like I said I didn't see him once and I visit weekly. So the staff have said they are bringing back in a Manager who ran the place previously for a few years on a short term basis, I hope he acts fast to stop this pub plummeting further. The place needs a good dose of TLC-the gardens, toilets, the hanging baskets, the broken lights all show a lack of interest and commitment. Some of the new faces, clearly think they're there for a holiday. The food, I haven't dare try recently after hearing sorry tales from friends. Mitchells and Butlers get your act together and recruit Managers who care, with drive and determination to see this place succeed again. A concerned local wants their pub back to 5 star status again!!

We used to eat here all the time as the food was always really good, sadly the food has gone downhill after giving it another try tonight. It is such a shame as it is a lovely pub with loyal service staff. Thank you to the waitress with curly hair who did her best to look after us in a difficult situation. Lots of meals were being sent back and it clearly needs new management and a decent chef.

The pub doesn't look too much from the outside. The food, drinks and service were better than I expected and the pub is worth a visit.

Went there to meet with friends and were very disappointed. Sunday lunch was expensive, in my opinion. It was also not cooked well - veg over hard and was cool (think cold would be too harsh). We would normally have sent it back but we're starving. Friends on the same table were still waiting for food after we had finished. After 40 minutes they gave up and requested a refund. They felt there was no real apology and it was almost a suggestion that "that's just the way it was". They reported trying to get a refund was a bit of an issue. We definitely won't return.

Food was good and served however could not complain about any courses however the service was slow after they took the order the wait for the first course seam to take a while which set the pattern for the rest of the meal. A good range of % alcohol drinks.

This is a lovely pub, with cosy pub atmosphere - lovely beer garden for the summer and an even more lovely fireplace during the winter. Split into two parts, one for dining only, and the other a more casual bar area which you can still order food in - however it is also dog friendly which is a big plus!

Staff lovely and food quite nice but unfortunately an unacceptable length of time to wait between courses. The pub was quite empty but staff didn’t come around to clear away quickly or ask if we would like a dessert so we ended up going to the bar and paying bill as sadly couldn’t wait any longer. This is the second time we have tried it there as it’s a nice atmosphere etc but there is such a long wait for the next course every time..- shame!

I visited here with my family, this being the second time we have visited this venue. We waited an unacceptable time for our starters and of the starters, two were not on the menu and I was given the last garlic mushrooms. This was early in the evening. We then waited another unacceptable time for our main course. No one came to clear the table and ask about desserts leaving us with a pile of dishes in front of us. Two hours after arriving, we got up and paid without having a dessert to find that the young female serving us was now serving in the bar so I wonder how long we would have been sat at our table waiting- to even pay the bill. The food was okay but not worth the money. To top it off, I sat as I ate watching rats scurry around the outside eating area. Not a good experience at all I'm afraid and I won't, be returning.

This is a lovely friendly pub and restaurant next to the Holiday Inn Express at Coedkermew, near Tredegar House, Newport. It is located just off the M4 and has plenty of free parking as long as you enter your car registration number when you arrive. The food is excellent, and this included items suitable for vegans or those with a milk allergy.

Great food and service. Lovely atmosphere, layout and family friendly. Will definitely recommend and be re visiting.

Incredible food and impeccable service I have the absolute pleasure of eating one of the indulgence lasagnas my absolute favorite meal at the dragonfly service was outstanding such lovely young men are Jaime and Arwel. I have never been disappointed when eating at the dragonfly. It’s such a lovely ambience thank you guys. We will be back.:)

Everything needs to be improved. Roast dinners warm, not hot, appalling roast potatoes, no clue about food presentation, meals came to the table in an odd order, main meals before starters, one starter was offered an alternative sauce as they had run out but arrived with no sauce, customer service poor, 2 main meals failed to arrive even when we could see people who arrived after us with getting their main meals, eventually we asked for a refund for those 2 meals and took a long time for someone to work out how to do it, with no apology or friendliness, just a cold attitude.

Alex server today was very attentive and knowledgeable about menu choices. Good was delicious.

Both asked for chips with meal but arrived with mash or saute potatoes. We were not going to complain until we found the potatoes were not cooked. These changed quickly for chips. Service was excellent. Happy female staff (Alex???) with knowledge of availability. Did not rush us. Very enjoyable experience.

Don’t often leave reviews but had such a wonderful experience here yesterday. We planned to go to another pub close by, but it was fully booked. We were all hungry so just chose the dragonfly as it was the closest one nearby. It wasn’t too busy, we had a drink before food and the gardens were really lovely. We were seated for food and the man who served us was probably the best server we have ever had. He was very attentive and we have 3 young children (3 a year old twins and a 1 year old) - he saw the kids were messing around and went to get crayons for them. They kept dropping things and he would pick them up. My partner had a burger with sauce on the side and one of the kids was dipping into it and our waiter went to get an additional pot of sauce. The attention to detail and making sure we had a nice experience was really appreciated. The kids menu had lots of options and so did the regular menu. I had the Sunday trio was amazing! The nicest Sunday roast I’ve ever had and I thought was very reasonably priced for a meal with 3 meats and a generous portion. Would definitely come again!

This was our 1st visit to The Dragonfly I booked a table for 3 & our dog, over the phone which was so easy. It’s was so cosy welcoming with friendly staff and very relaxed, order at the bar whenever you are ready. We sat inside, but I noticed there was outdoor tables too! There’s plenty of parking and you just put your registration into the touch screen just inside the front door. Our Food was beautifully cooked, hot, well presented and tasty ( we ordered From the set menu; starters, mains and desserts, which was very reasonably priced) I didn’t take many photos as everything looked so good we just tucked in without thinking about taking pics! I was amazed at how dog friendly it was! our dog seemed to enjoy it as much as we did.. there were bowls & fresh water for her too. It’s a perfect place to eat after a walk in Tredegar house gardens, which are beautiful & a very short drive/ walk away. Thank you very much .. We will definitely be back again soon

Food was lovely, lots of variety as well! All the staff were super friendly and helpful but Jamie, who served us, has to get a particular shout out. Will definitely be going back soon.

Dragonfly as always was nice but on this occasion we wanted the Gluten free fish but was told that you had changed suppliers and there was no fish. I wanted to order the steak with peppercorn sauce but no sauce so opted for the Garlic & cheese mushrooms to be told there were none. The gent who was looking after us offered to remove the cost of a pint to make up for the issue with food choice. Once we had settled for food, overall it was good, just disappointed in that first instance. We have visited again and similar issues! The staff were really friendly and the food that we had was very nice. The only issue was we were told there were no eggs to go with the gammon or mushrooms for starters. Eggs are a stable with Gammon, egg and chips. Surely taking a small hit on margin and buying eggs from the local supermarket wouldve been more beneficial than risking a a bigger hit from people reading the negative reviews and not going.

Haven't beeb here for a long time after having a bad experience. I'm happy to say things seem to have changed. Lovely atmosphere staff friendly and helpful will definitely be returning.

We have been visiting Dragonfly regularly for about 6 years now. We are always happy with the food, atmosphere and service. This particular visit there was a bit of an issue with the main courses but Alex sorted it all out with a good dose of humour thrown in. Looking forward to our next visit.

Well, we booked our table for 12 midday and arrived at 11.55 to find it closed. When it finally opened out of the blue, a group of people and a couple pushed in front of us to get inside. We were shown to our table and asked what drinks we wanted. The waitress then told us that the ice machine had broken and they had no ice cubes. When she came back with our drinks, we ordered our food. At this time, there was a family sat down as well, who ordered their food after us. In the meantime, quite a lot of people had come into the restaurant, and a number of people who had dogs went into the bar. While we were still waiting for our food, we noticed that the other family had their food, plus other people in the bar were having theirs. Ours eventually turned up at 12.50. To our surprise, both our roast dinners were cold, and some of the vegetables and meats were quite hard to cut into. We're very disappointed, to say the least, and will never be going back anytime soon. Plus, it's a big off-putting thing, in my opinion, that dogs should not be allowed into an eating establishment.

I ordered steak and chips, it took half an hour to be served,. The food was awful my steak was full of fat, I sent it back and they delivered me the same meal back! To say I was unimpressed is an understatement

Really enjoyed the atmosphere and the food (especially the desserts!). Jamie's service was friendly and attentive throughout.

This pubs carpark is owned by Euro Car parks. I had no idea (what out of town pub carpark are owned by a company like this?), stopped for a quick drink with a friend for 59 mins and ended up with a £100 fine. Maybe it's obvious, but I didn't notice the signs and the bar staff said absolutely nothing about it. So 1 star review for that. Sorry.

Came here for my sons birthday took while for food ti come out my 7 years old plate was boiling and our 3 plates were cold all the chips were either cooked but cold or not cooked enough, portions were small .the steak were ribeye and just a choking hazard was terrible .don't think it was ribeye the fat was awful vert chewy ,and some wilted lettuce said comes with a vine of cherry tomatoes but was just half a normal tomato, my 7 year old salad was red pepper and carrot raww but wasn't peeled like it beeb on the floor in dirt and his chips were terrible,sides salad was over priced for a tiny amount .It was a big disappointment .didn't have time to go elsewhere for his birthday as he had things planned.

Didn't have food so couldn't comment. However I did ask 8f they were serving food this was at 3.40pm to be told they wasnt actually serving food until 4pm, given that I had asked I wasn't offered to take a look at the menu - so therefore I didn't ask. Drink was OK I had a Madri if I recall correctly. Pub atmosphere was cosy and dogs welcome. Outside of the pub looked a little run down with paintwork desperately needed. However the first thing that struck me was the dustiness of the outside glass tables despite giving a little pot of flowers on them.
