Food a little slow arriving but everything cooked to perfection. No frozen chips here, all food seemed to be freshly prepared. Brilliant.

Went here for an 80s night back 2 weeks ago. From the moment we got there, the atmosphere was pretty bad. The young lady behind the bar who served us just looked like she couldn't be bothered, didn't even smile. It doesn't take a lot to do and can make people feel more welcomed and relaxed. Then, there was no room to actually sit down. After half an hour, we finally found a seat. The table was absolutely disgusting and had not been cleaned. 8pm came, and we decided to go upstairs to the event. Upstairs was lovely all done out like a typical 80's disco. The people on the door were really friendly and made you feel relaxed. The place was empty to begin with, but we were told it would fill up by about 9.30pm, to which it did. But my only complaint was it was supposed to be 80's music, which is why we went, but my wife and I didn't recognise any of the songs, plus I only knew about 2 songs. I was under the impression it was going to be mainstream chart music, not album songs, that not many people know. Around 10 pm, my wife and I decided we were going. Plus, it's really funny that the female DJ was putting songs on that no one knew, but she was singing along to, plus she was on the dance floor all the time. When we arrived home, we both said we wouldn't go there again. Just wasn't what we were expecting. So anyone thinking of going, just be aware, it's what I would call 80's alternative music, not chart music.

Proper little pub with great character. Great for when it’s sunny as the beer garden has loads of seating and umbrellas.

Great carvery on a Sunday. Not expensive. Good selection of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks. Would recommend.

Food was excellent with 6 fresh vegetables to choose from and value for money, but decor is dated .

Best place for home cooked food, if you in a hurry this is not the place, this is proper home cooked food cooked fresh to order.. we had the pen and wig burger, omg not for the light eater, this burger is huge and absolutely stunning, served with homemade chips and garnish. The mix grill was plentyful and cooked to how I requested.. the offers ensured we all had a drink which saved us a few quid being a family of six.. Will definitely be back and would highly recommend.

Visiting the Pen & wig today. First time we have been here. Ordered drinks at the bar. 5minutes later ordered food. Waiting over 40 minutes and no sign of food. Checked with the young man behind the bar to be told my jacket potato was still in the oven? My partner then went to enquire with the manager only to be told they had forgotten our order?! So refund was given. No refund on two drinks each that we had whilst waiting on our food.

Good pub with fantastic food and ales. Upstairs is a great live/hire venue. Unfortunately I wouldn't recommend hiring as the 4 times I've done it I've had problems every time. I wouldn't do it again, but that's just me. Amendment** I have since put on events after talking to the owner and had brilliant nights. Thanks

This is old fashioned wooden floored ale house This pub has a good landlord good clientele and a very good range real ales on handpump Well worth a visit when in Newport Saturday March 11th 2023 I re visited this Newport city centre real pub This pub has got really better since my last visit. The beers were not as many has it is now The atmosphere here is great and the staff friendly and approachable. I would now put this pub in the top 3 ale houses in Newport. Saturday 23rd September 2023 i agin visited this great newport Ale house today 4 hand pumped ales on lively bar staff ales were good i drank and a easy going friendly pub Keep up the good work

Went in today with a friend had the special deal of two all day breakfast for 13.99 you get a coffee or tea with mail the breakfast is grilled really healthy meal

Chicken Balti tasted nice but kept getting burnt bits of chicken, nan was burnt but the chef was busy. No soap in the WC despite me bringing it to their attention. Little moans but I do like the place. Lovely outdoor space.

We were a group of friends celebrating one of our friends special birthday 🎂 🥳.We sat outside in the beer garden. Service was very good and pretty quick.

Me my son and grandson had the Sunday lunch, it’s a Carvery and was outstanding the chief was very generous with the meat, and there was a good selection of vegetables available,as we all know the gravy can make or break a Sunday lunch and I happy to say the gravy being served was just perfect,add to this the friendly helpful bar staff, and the amount of space you get at the table to eat your dinner. And it’s winner winner chicken dinner. 10/10 from me,my son and my 3 year old grandson. We will definitely be going back.

After hearing many good things about Sunday lunch.. we had a takeaway today and it was lush.. you couldn't cook it at home for the price.. very friendly staff we will definitely be back 😃

We had a lovely works reunion in the room upstairs. It was a great venue for a get together. Bar staff were great.

Good beer selection, we had the carvery and were disappointed, the beef was the only saving grace, well cooked and a decent amount but the veg was either over cooked (broccoli, cauliflower) or really uncooked (sprouts, roast potatoes)

A traditional pub with a good, atmosphere to watch the rugby in. The staff are friendly enough and there's a good choice of beer. The only issue is that the food is mediocre and both the male and female toilets really stink of pee!!!

My visit was after the rugby at Cardiff. Football matches on TV, with sound too loud. Only a couple of real ales on the go. Noisy, untidy and felt like a Weatherspoons. Disappointing.

Four of us spent most of the day there on Saturday. Awesome all day breakfast and then later on to soak up the Strongbow, a burger and proper homemade chips, everything cooked perfectly not greasy just well cooked, well presented food good portion sizes to. Staff really friendly, lovely relaxed atmosphere. Service perfect. Looking forward to next time. 👍👍👍

A friend of mine recently had a going away party in the Pen and Wig. The party was in the large upstairs room. There is a good size dance floor surrounded by plenty of seating. There is also an upstairs bar so everything is in one location. I haven’t been here before (sorry!) but I’d have no hesitation in coming back. Staff are friendly and quick behind the bar so would definitely recommend.

I made an account literally to just give this review, best pub in Newport, halloumi fries and next level and the Moretti knocks off your bezel. Roast on a Sunday could go down as cooking heritage, healthy serving for a decent price, ohhhh so nice!

My little boy and I popped in today on the off chance of a dinner and sooo glad we did!!! Those roasties were lush..well, the whole dinner was..couldn't leave in fact, so they even give us a take out box for later.. and the dog if he's lucky!!! Always lovely staff,great value for money never disappoint 2 dinners 2 drinks just over£20..can't go wrong

We had to wait over an hour for 2 fish and chips and it was crenated when it came. My husband ordered scampi after and came exactly the same.

Food was decent for a decent price and they have Bass on tap. What's not to like!!

Pleasant town centre pub with good food and a range of real and keg beers. The kitchen is open so you can see the chef at work. Great chips and serves an all day breakfast. Cosmopolitan vibe indoors and a large outdoor seating area with TV. Parking close by (NCP) right behind in the evening. Really can't fault it when in Newport.

Monthly lunch venue with friends, friendly staff & reasonably priced food, with a different special offer daily. My friends both ordered Fish, Chips & Peas/Mushy Peas & I opted for Hunters Chicken although the latter was unavailable due to "the meat order had not arrived". For quickness, I also chose Fish Chips & Mushy Peas. I was disappointed with my choice, the Chips were cold & after eating part of the Batter I discarded it for being too greasy. The fish was also bland. Both my friends enjoyed theirs but agreed the Chips were cold.

A bit disappointed with the fish & chips but my daughter burger and my lasagne was great. At one time the chips in this place were special but now just frozen, shame.

Best variety of lagers in Newport. Place needs more cleaning though. Great staff.

You begin to look for the pig in the backyard as the gammon was that flavoursome and freshly cooked . Two eggs sat proud on top complimenting the smoky crisp gammon. Circling the plate a touch of Caribbean the juicy pineapple piece that is to gammon what Ant is to Dec a perfect match. Best chips in the Port , like your mother used to make , potatoes cut and cooked in hot fat . The Chef at the Pen and Wig has lifted the Bar when it comes to pub grub , a 5 star experience on a hot summers night ,plus the cold lager , pleasant ambience topped off by an Alsatian joining us at the nearby table as impeccably behaved as the winner of Crufts. Recommended.

Great pub to take in the big game. Fair pump prices, good food (I highly recommend the breakfasts!). There's a free function room available upstairs. Not really suitable for folk with wheelchairs as there's loads of steps. Rear beer 'garden' with plenty of seating at picnic tables. About 3 free parking spaces out back, usually taken by staff. WARNING: Rest of the rear car park has become NCP pay by phone/app only during the weekends (when I visited Aug '22).

Rude and incompetent bar staff. Tried to order food and drinks but staff ignorant of who was waiting. Told Landlord but he just walked away. 4 of us for food and drinks so I told them what I thought and walked out. They lost over £100 from us alone. Should be ZERO stars. One of the worst pubs around. Shameful and disgusting treatment. Took our money and custom elsewhere. AVOID, AVOID, AVOID.

Excellent beer and a superb steak. What's not to love?
